I had a friend,

Sometimes I hear a keen from my Celtic ancestors.

And some songs have been postcards from my future.

In my family, there was a song for every loss, every celebration,

I read once that every time an old woman dies,

And before her library disappeared,

I tuned into my grandmother's signals

and gleaned her tenacity

which I borrowed,

In 1992,

I was writing a song about my divorce,

which hadn't happened yet.

ဒါက ဖြစ်မလာခဲ့သေးဘူး။

But which I saw coming like a freight train.

So I was stuck in this song

like I was stuck in my life.

And the same time across the country,

my mother was going through a box of my school assignments

အမေက ကျွန်မရဲ့ အိမ်စာတွေနဲ့ ကလေးဘဝ

and childhood drawings,

ရုပ်ပုံ တစ်ပုံးကို ရှင်းလင်းပြီး

and she sent it to me.

ကျွန်မဆီကို ပို့ပေးခဲ့တယ်။

So I started going through this box, and I came across this yellowed paper,

ဒါနဲ့ ဒီသေတ္တာကို စပြီး ရှင်းလိုက်တော့ အဝါရောင်ဖြစ်နေတဲ့ စာရွက်ကို တွေ့လိုက်ရတယ်၊

this school assignment I had done in the seventh grade

ကက်သလစ်ကျောင်းမှာ သတ္တမတန်းတုန်းက လုပ်ခဲ့တဲ့

in Catholic school

ဥပစာနဲ့ သာဓကတွေ

on metaphors and similes.

အကြောင်း ဒီအိမ်စာပါ။

Now I vividly remember the pleasure I took in that assignment

အခု အဲဒီအိမ်စာကို လုပ်ဆောင်ခဲ့တဲ့ ကြည်နူးမှုကို အထင်းသား မှတ်မိနေတာက

because it was literally the only thing

ဒါက သီလရှင်တွေ ပေးဖူးတဲ့

the nuns had ever given me to do that I enjoyed.

ကျွန်မ ကြည်နူးမိတဲ့ တစ်ခုတည်းသော အရာမို့လို့ပါ။

(Laughter)

So this line I had written popped out at me.

ဒါနဲ့ ကျွန်မ ရေးထားတဲ့ ဒီစာကြောင်းက ကျွန်မဆီ ပေါ်လာတယ်။

"A lonely road is a bodyguard."

“အထီးကျန်လမ်းတစ်လမ်းက သက်တော်စောင့်တစ်ယောက်ပါပဲ။”

What did it mean?

ဘာကို ဆိုလိုတာလဲ။

I had even pasted a picture of this empty road

မျဉ်းဘေးမှာ ဒီလမ်းလွတ်နေတဲ့ ပုံတစ်ပုံကိုတောင်

next to the line.

ကပ်ထားခဲ့ဖူးတယ်။

It was a metaphor.

ဥပစာတစ်ခုဖြစ်ခဲ့တာပေါ့။

It wasn't "a lonely road is like a bodyguard," a simile.

“အထီးကျန်လမ်းဟာ သက်တော်စောင့်နဲ့ တူတယ်” လို့ ဥပမာတစ်ခုပေါ့။

It was the much more poetic: “A lonely road is a bodyguard.”

“အထီးကျန်လမ်းဟာ သက်တော်စောင့်” ဒါက အများကြီး ပိုပြီး ကဗျာဆန်တယ်။

As painful as that was then, and as it still can be painful now,

အဲဒီတုန်းက နာကျင်ခဲ့သလို အခုလည်း နာကျင်နေနိုင်သေးတာကို

I knew what she was telling me.

သူက ပြောပြနေတာကို ကျွန်မ သိတယ်။

That ...

ဒါက

Solitude can protect the seeds of creativity.

အထီးကျန်မှုက တီထွင်ဖန်တီးမှု မျိုးစေ့တွေကို ကာကွယ်နိုင်တယ်။

And that loneliness contains a priceless gift

ပြီးတော့ အစပိုင်းမှာ မသက်မသာမှုတွေကို သည်းခံပြီး

if we can tolerate the initial discomfort

စိတ်ပျက်အားငယ်မှုရဲ့ သွေးဆောင်မှုကို ရှောင်ရှားနိုင်ရင်

and avoid the seduction of despair.

So my 12-year-old waved at me across the decades,

saying that who I was

was who I would become.

And I waved back

ကျွန်မက ပြန်လက်ပြနှုတ်ဆက်ကာ

and I dropped her line right in the song I was writing.

ရေးနေတဲ့ သီချင်းထဲမှာ သူ့စာကြောင်းကို ချက်ချင်း ထည့်လိုက်တယ်။

(Singing) I’ll send the angels to watch over you tonight

(သီချင်းဆို) ဒီည မင်းကို စောင့်ကြည့်ဖို့ နတ်သမီးလေးတွေ လွှတ်လိုက်မယ်၊

And you send them right back to me

သူတို့ကို ငါ့ဆီ ချက်ချင်း ပြန်ပို့ပေးနော်၊

A lonely road is a bodyguard

ငါတို့သာ တကယ်ဖြစ်ချင်ရင်

If we really want it to be

အထီးကျန်တဲ့လမ်းက သက်တော်စောင့်ပဲ။

We're all just radios

ကျွန်မတို့အားလုံးဟာ အချင်းချင်းရဲ့

hoping to pick up each other's signals.

And some of those signals have a backbeat and a melody,

that melts into the seeds of our creativity.

And the reverse is also true.

A memory can unlock a song that's waiting to be written.

It can reveal us to ourselves across time and generations,

to reach their destination.

and by telling the truth.
