I had a friend,

I read once that every time an old woman dies,

And before her library disappeared,

I tuned into my grandmother's signals

and gleaned her tenacity

which I borrowed,

and her long suffering in her life of constant work with seven children,

six of whom made it to adulthood.

In a house without electricity.

In 1992,

I was writing a song about my divorce,

which hadn't happened yet.

But which I saw coming like a freight train.

So I was stuck in this song

And the same time across the country,

my mother was going through a box of my school assignments

and childhood drawings,

and she sent it to me.

So I started going through this box, and I came across this yellowed paper,

this school assignment I had done in the seventh grade

in Catholic school

은유법과 직유법에 관해 만든

on metaphors and similes.

학교 과제물이었습니다.

Now I vividly remember the pleasure I took in that assignment

이 과제를 하면서 느꼈던 기쁨이 아직도 생생하게 기억이 나요.

because it was literally the only thing

수녀님들이 제게 시키신 일 중

the nuns had ever given me to do that I enjoyed.

유일하게 제가 즐긴 일이었거든요.

(Laughter)

So this line I had written popped out at me.

제가 썼던 한 소절이 제 눈에 들어왔습니다.

"A lonely road is a bodyguard."

“외로운 도로는 경호원이다.”

What did it mean?

무엇을 뜻할까요?

I had even pasted a picture of this empty road

심지어 이 소절 옆에

next to the line.

텅 빈 도로를 그려놨습니다.

It was a metaphor.

은유였어요.

It wasn't "a lonely road is like a bodyguard," a simile.

직유법처럼 “외로운 도로는 경호원과 같다.” 를 뜻하진 않았습니다.

It was the much more poetic: “A lonely road is a bodyguard.”

훨씬 시적이었어요: “외로운 도로는 경호원이다.”

As painful as that was then, and as it still can be painful now,

그 당시에 느꼈던, 그리고 아직도 느끼고 있는 고통을

I knew what she was telling me.

말하고 있다는 걸 저는 알았습니다.

That ...

Solitude can protect the seeds of creativity.

고독은 창의력의 씨앗을 보호합니다.

And that loneliness contains a priceless gift

if we can tolerate the initial discomfort

and avoid the seduction of despair.

So my 12-year-old waved at me across the decades,

We're all just radios

And some of those signals have a backbeat and a melody,

And music can unlock a frozen memory

A memory can unlock a song that's waiting to be written.

It can reveal us to ourselves across time and generations,

in community, in solitude.

Some frequencies are sound,

And some take a half a lifetime
