But what I'd like to impress upon you

is this is a new world we need to begin exploring.

And I think we can do it in interesting ways.

아주 재미있는 시간이 될 거예요.

But all of us have had an issue with fungi at some point in our lives, right?

균류 문제는 다들 살면서 한번씩 겪어 보셨죠?

Maybe even now?

We think of fungi, we think of fuzzy stuff

균류라고 하면 제일 먼저

냉장고 뒤편에서 상한 요구르트에 핀 징그러운 솜털이 생각납니다.

that's growing on our yogurt that we forgot in the back of the fridge.

Or maybe that itch you developed by wearing that favorite pair of pants,

아니면 좋아하지만 꽉 끼는 바지를 입었을 때 생기는 가려움증?

but just got a little bit too tight?

Or, you know, maybe you think of death and decay and disease,

혹은 균류라 하면 죽음, 부패, 질병 같은 게 떠오르시겠죠.

when you think about fungi?

But fungi, maybe some of them have a dark side.

네, 어떤 균류는 어두운 면이 있을 수 있죠.

I mean, who of us doesn't?

그런데 사람도 그렇지 않나요?

But I'd like to invite you to see these misunderstood creatures

하지만 저와 함께 새로운 관점으로 균류의 누명을 벗겨 보죠.

in a new light,

and maybe start to appreciate

균류의 긍정적이고 교육적인 행태에 감사하게 될지도 모릅니다.

some of the positive and inspirational ways that they behave.

So if that mold is breaking bad on that yogurt

아까도 말했지만 냉장고에 있던 요구르트가

you forgot in the back of the fridge, again,

상해서 곰팡이가 피었다면

maybe it's not just rotting and spoiling,

그저 부패하고 상한 것뿐 아니라

but maybe it's taking an act of transformation,

of renewal and of new possibilities.

재탄생, 그리고 새로운 가능성이 열린 거죠.

And it's that very act of transformation that's so central to life on our planet,

it’s been important for our own history.

인간의 역사에도 아주 중요했습니다.

And maybe for the future,

어쩌면 앞으로 우리가 균류에서 배울 수 있다면

if we can learn from fungi,

우리 자신과 우리 사회를 바꿔서 자연과 더 잘 조화될 것입니다.

we might be able to transform ourselves and our societies

in ways that are in greater harmony with nature.

So what do I mean when I say fungi have been important to our past?

그러면 균류가 인간의 역사에 중요했다는 말은 어떤 뜻일까요?

I'm not talking about that amazing mushroom trip you took

여러분들 대학 시절 다녀 왔던 버섯 채집 얘기는 아닙니다.

back in university,

though that was probably pretty awesome in its own right.

물론 버섯 채집 자체가 신나는 경험이긴 하죠.

What I'm talking about is the way that fungi have been central

제가 하려는 이야기는

지구에서 생명체가 진화할 때 균류가 핵심 역할을 해왔다는 겁니다.

to the evolution of life on the planet,

that virtually all life has a fungal backstory.

사실 지구에 사는 생물이라면 거의 다 균류와 관련이 있죠.

Now, think: fungi have been on the planet for a billion years ... or more.

균류는 지구에서 십억 년 이상을 살았다는 걸 생각하세요.

And during that time the Earth was just a rocky, desolate place.

그동안 지구는 그저 바위로 뒤덮인 황량한 곳이었고

There wasn't a lot of life on it.

생명체도 거의 없었죠.

Now, algae would actually escape the waters

조류가 물을 떠나서

땅 위로 올라 와서 육상 식물로 진화할 수 있었던 건

and come onto land to evolve into land plants,

but only by partnering with fungi first, as its root system.

먼저 균류를 뿌리에 받아 들여 공생한 덕분이었습니다.

Soils would begin to form

토양이 생성되기 시작한 것 역시

as fungi ate rock and broke it down to make the nutrients available.

균류가 양분을 흡수하기 위해 암석을 먹고 분해하면서였죠.

So you had this opportunity for new life to spring up.

그래서 새로운 생명체도 탄생할 수 있었던 겁니다.

As a result, the evolution of plants would explode across the planet,

그 결과 식물이 왕성하게 번식하며 지구 곳곳에 뿌리를 뻗어나갔고

which would oxygenate the atmosphere

대기에 산소를 공급해서

and allow the evolution of more complex life-forms,

인간 같은 더 복잡한 생명체들이 진화할 수 있었습니다.

like us, humans.

Right?

아시겠죠?

So being on the planet for a billion years,

다시 말하면, 균류가 십억 년을 지구에 살면서

fungi have developed all sorts of life strategies

다른 모든 생명체가 생존해서 환경에 적응하고

to be adaptive and diverse and resilient.

다양하게 진화하며 회복력을 가질 수 있게 도운 겁니다.

Think about it -- they survived a billion years,

그들은 십억 년 동안 살아남았어요.

through great swings in climate, over hundreds of millions of years,

급변하는 기후에 맞서며 수억 년을 견뎌내고

lived through all the five great mass extinction events,

엄청난 대멸종 사건을 다섯 번이나 겪었죠.

where the dinosaurs went extinct and the poor little trilobites

거대한 공룡과 작고 연약한 삼엽충,

and countless other forms of life that we don't even know existed.

But fungi persisted and thrived, and do to this day.

And I think that's what drove them to me.

It's so endearing, right?

I mean, who doesn't love a good survival story?

I know I do.

저도 그래요.

But fungi weren't my first love. That was music, actually.

그런데 사실 제 첫사랑은 균류가 아니라 음악이었답니다.

And actually, when I was a young, young boy,

사실 젊은 청년 시절 저는 그런지 음악에 푹 빠져 살았어요.

I was really into grunge music,

and I played in a grunge band.

그런지 밴드 활동도 했는데

And we were awful.

실력은 아주 형편없었죠.

(Laughter)

But I didn't know that at the time,

하지만 그땐 몰랐고 그냥 열정을 추구한 거죠.

and anyhow, I had to follow my passion.

So I put everything in my pickup truck

저는 작은 트럭에 짐을 모두 싣고

and I moved from my childhood home of Kansas City to Seattle,

캔자스 고향집을 떠나 시애틀로 향했어요.

the mecca of grunge music in the ’90s.

90년대 그런지 음악의 성지에서 밴드 활동을 새로 시작할 생각이었죠.

And I was going to start a new band.

And unfortunately, none of the talent of Nirvana or Soundgarden

하지만 슬프게도 너바나나 사운드가든 같은

천재적인 음악성이 저한테 넘어 오지 않더라고요.

rubbed off on me.

It would have been a quite different life had it did.

그랬다면 제 인생이 확 달라졌겠죠.

But the splendor of the Pacific Northwest forests really did.

대신 저는 북서 태평양 숲의 화려한 자태에 홀딱 반했어요.

And it was the trees and all the life aboveground

처음에는 땅 위에 사는 이런저런 나무와 생물들에게 끌렸지만

that drew me there,

but it was the fungi and the microbes belowground

나중에는 땅 밑에 사는 균류와 미생물에 매료되었어요.

that kept me coming back.

I just got even more and more interested about the way that they lived,

그 작은 생명체들이 살아가는 기이한 방식에 점점 빠져들다 보니

all these bizarre forms,

the fact that fungi are literally everywhere.

균류는 그야말로 어디에나 있더군요.

Right now, they're on your skin,

바로 지금 여러분 피부에도 있고 장 안에도 있어요.

in your gut.

With every breath you take, you inhale dozens of fungal spores.

숨 쉴 때마다 균류 포자를 수십 개씩 들이마십니다.

Every move you make,

걸을 때마다 땅 위의 버섯과 곰팡이를 밟으면서 지나가죠.

you trample mushrooms and molds beneath your feet,

in the soil.

And their ubiquity ...

그렇게 온갖 곳에 존재하니까

is a big reason why we know so little about fungi.

오히려 균류에 대해 아는 게 별로 없는 겁니다.

Despite all the tools we have at our disposal, scientific tools,

온갖 과학 도구들을 사용할 수 있는데도

we know perhaps five percent of all the fungi,

균류를 아마 5퍼센트 정도 알 겁니다.

some three million species

현재 균류는 전 세계에 약 삼백만 종이 있다고 생각합니다.

that are thought to exist in the world today.

이렇게 다양한 종이 있는데도

Now that's a massive amount of biodiversity

that we know virtually nothing about,

균류가 어떤 일을 하며 어떻게 살아가는지 전혀 모르죠.

how it lives and what it does.

And that's what really inspired me to continue to study about fungi

그래서 저는 균류 연구를 멈출 수 없었습니다.

and ask deeper questions.

더 깊이 파고들었죠.

Could some of this biodiversity help in creating a more resilient future?

이 다양한 생물들이 우리 미래를 좀 더 건강하게 만들어 줄까요?

What could we actually learn from fungi?

균류에게서 실제로 뭘 배울 수 있을까요?

Were there metaphors that we might apply

우리가 사는 방식에 적용해서

to how we live,

to create a more resilient future together?

더 회복력 있는 미래를 만들 만한 비유가 있을까요?

I'd like to share with you some of those metaphors.

그런 비유를 몇 가지 알려드리겠습니다.

The first is that fungi are biointelligent.

첫 번째, 균류는 지혜롭습니다.

Being on the planet for so long,

지구에서 오랜 시간을 살아오면서

fungi have created a really great ability to be good at resource efficiency

균류는 자원을 낭비 없이 이용하고

회복하는 능력을 훌륭하게 키웠습니다.

and resilience,

and, as it turns out, spatial planning.

그 능력은 공간 이용으로 나타나죠.

So researchers in Japan did this super cool experiment

일본의 한 연구팀이 아주 재미있는 실험을 했어요.

where they wanted to see if fungi could help engineers

공학자들이 도시 교통망을 설계할 때 균류의 도움을 받아서

to create more efficient transport networks.

시간과 에너지를 아낄 수 있을지 알아보려고 한 거죠.

So they laid out oatmeal on a petri dish,

과학자들은 배양 접시에 오트밀을 넓게 깔아 놓았습니다.

수도권 지역에 있는 도시들에 해당하는 거죠.

corresponding to the cities of the Tokyo metropolitan area.

And they introduced a slime mold,

이 위에서 점균류를 키웠는데

a type of fungus whose favoritest food ever is oatmeal,

균류 중에서 점균류는 오트밀을 가장 좋아합니다.

and the fungus rapidly went through a process of self-optimization

점균류는 오트밀을 섭취하는 가장 효율적인 방법을 스스로 찾아서

to find the most efficient links between its favoritest-ever food source,

연결망을 만들면서 빠르게 뻗어나가기 시작했습니다.

And in a matter of hours, it would recreate, largely,

단 몇 시간 만에,

the existing railway map of the Tokyo metropolitan area --

a process it took engineers decades to actually produce.

공학자들이 수십 년 걸려 완성한 과정이죠.

Now the fungus, it has no brain,

균류는 뇌가 없습니다.

it has no plan, it was given no instructions or guidance.

계획을 짠 것도 아니고 지시나 지침을 받지도 않았죠.

But still, it created a highly optimized network.

그런데도 이렇게 효율적인 교통망을 만들어낸 겁니다.

And this convinced me and other scientists

이걸 보면서 저와 다른 과학자들은

that maybe fungi could have practical applications

인류가 직면한 현실적인 문제들을

to help solve some of our human challenges

균류가 해결해 줄 수 있을 거라 확신했습니다.

in ways that are quick and efficient

그것도 아주 빠르고 효율적인 방법으로요.

and perhaps even more imaginative than we could do

게다가 우리 뇌를 다 합친 것보다도 훨씬 창의적일지도 모르죠.

with all of our brains put together.

Now, another way that fungi can produce a metaphor

균류에게서 얻은 또 다른 비유는 협동 능력입니다.

is being collaborative.

Now, there is most evidence in their relationship with plants.

가장 강력한 증거는 균류와 식물의 관계입니다.

Now remember how algae evolved into plants

조류가 식물로 진화할 때 균류를 뿌리에 받아들여

through the help of fungi as their root system?

진화에 도움을 받은 거 기억하시죠?

Well, that love affair never ended.

이 아름다운 관계는 계속 이어집니다.

Still today, 90 percent of all land plants need to have a mycorrhizal association.

지금도 육상 식물의 90퍼센트는

살아가는 데 균근 관계가 필요하죠.

This is the plant-fungus-root association.

식물과 균류의 뿌리 연합입니다.

So depicted here, in this highly realistic view

이 그림에는 숲의 땅속 생태계가

of the underground of a forest ecosystem ...

아주 실감 나게 잘 나와있습니다.

you can see the fungus,

여기 보이는 것처럼 균류는

which exists in most of its life as thin filaments,

일생의 대부분을 가느다란 실 모양으로 삽니다.

and the network of thin filaments, we call it mycelium.

이 실 모양의 균류 그물망을 균사체라고 부르죠.

And the mycelium of the fungus can tap into the root of plants

균류의 균사체는 뿌리와 연결해서 공생 관계를 만듭니다.

and make a symbiosis.

And thereby, they exchange nutrients

이 관계를 통해 그들은 서로에게 부족한 영양분을 교환하죠.

that the other one isn't so good at making or capturing.

So in case of the fungi, they're providing minerals to the plants,

균류는 식물에게 무기질을 제공하고

and the plants, through photosynthesis, are providing carbon.

식물은 균류에게 광합성으로 흡수한 탄소를 제공합니다.

And so this exchange can go on between the organisms.

공생하는 동안 이런 식의 교환이 계속해서 일어나죠.

But it doesn’t stop there,

하지만 여기서 끝이 아닙니다.

because the fungi can tap into other plants at the same time,

균류는 동시에 다른 식물과 연결될 수 있고

and other plants can also have other fungal partners.

다른 식물은 또 다른 균류와 연결될 수 있으니까요.

So what you end up with

결국 거대한 땅속 그물망이 탄생합니다.

is this massive underground network mediated by fungi.

균류가 매개하는 것이죠.

이 그물망에 흐르는 것은 영양분만이 아니고

Now, it's not just nutrients that are flowing,

but also communication,

소통도 이루어집니다.

because plants can talk to each other through the fungal network

식물들은 균류 그물망을 통해 서로 신호를 주고받을 수 있거든요.

to create chemical signals to be able to warn of a pest attack, for example.

예컨대 해충 공격 같은 걸 경고하는 화학 신호를 만들어 보내는 거죠.

Now, fungi are also regenerative.

균류는 재생력도 있습니다.

균류의 분해 능력은

Now, their ability to decompose is important for the planet,

지구 생태계에 중요하며 그야말로 필수적입니다.

to say the least,

because fungi eat death and give it back to life, as nutrients,

균류는 죽은 생물을 분해해서

영양분으로 바꿔 다시 순환하게 합니다.

to start the cycle anew.

In nature, there's no such thing as waste.

자연에 쓰레기라는 건 없어요, 그건 인간이 만든 개념이죠.

I mean, waste is a human concept.

Everything is used, everything is circular.

모든 것이 쓸모가 있고 모든 것이 순환합니다.

Everything becomes something else.

모든 것이 다른 것으로 바뀝니다.

And if you don't appreciate fungi,

균류의 진가를 모른다면 이 한 가지만 보면 알 겁니다.

you will, for one reason,

and it's that decompositional ability.

바로 분해 능력입니다.

I mean, think about it.

생각해 보세요.

We would be buried under kilometers of undecayed plant matter

균류의 분해 능력이 없었다면

썩지 못한 식물 잔해와 동물 사체, 배설물이 수 킬로미터 쌓여서

and dead animals and poo

without the decompositional ability of fungi.

우리는 그 밑에 파묻혀 버릴 것입니다.

And that would be a pretty crappy existence,

you've got to admit.

So as a metaphor,

비유적으로, 균류는 우리에게

fungi can provide us with ways of being biointelligent,

생물학적 지혜와 협동 능력, 회복력을 줄 수 있습니다.

collaborative and resilient.

But I also believe that fungi have practical applications

하지만 균류는 재료 생산에도 실질적인 도움이 됩니다.

in how we produce materials.

And this is actually my very cool day job,

as researcher at a fermentation science company here in Oslo

that’s reimagining a new world of more sustainable materials

더 나은 미래를 위해 친환경 일상용품 재료를 개발합니다.

of everyday products.

So let me give you some examples.

몇 가지 예를 말씀드릴게요.

One is biomaterials.

첫 번째는 생물 재료입니다.

So taking a fungus,

균류를 이용하면

we can literally grow new materials, using agricultural residues,

농업 폐기물로 만든 신소재를 그야말로 ‘배양’할 수 있습니다.

to replace unsustainable products like Styrofoam or Rockwool

매립장으로 가거나 환경 오염이 되는

스티로폼이나 암면 같은 유해 물질을 대체할 수 있죠.

that often end up in landfills or in pollution.

So we can grow things like soundproofing panels

방음판이나 건물 단열재 같은 것도 배양할 수 있어요.

or insulation for buildings.

Or we can make mushroom Frisbees.

버섯 원반도 만들 수 있고 가능성은 끝이 없습니다.

The possibilities are nearly endless.

We can also make textiles from fungi.

또한 균류로 직물도 만들 수 있죠.

So, for example, animal-free leathers.

예를 들면 동물 없이도 가죽을 만드는 거죠.

So usually, you have a cow,

소 한 마리로 가죽을 만드는 데 보통 삼 년 정도 걸립니다.

and it takes about three years to make leather,

and all the resources and animal death that is involved.

게다가 자원도 많이 들고 동물도 죽여야 하죠.

Not a great way to make leather.

별로 좋은 방법이 아니에요.

If you can make it another way, like with fungi,

그런데 균류를 이용해 가죽을 만들면

it takes days to make it.

며칠이면 만들 수 있습니다.

A much better way that's both efficient and ethical,

미래를 생각할 때 효율적이고 윤리적인 훨씬 좋은 방법이죠.

and how we can make leathers in the future.

And then, there's food,

제가 정말 좋아하는 음식 얘기를 해보죠.

a subject I'm particularly passionate about.

Now, with fungi, we can make

균류를 이용하면

a whole range of sustainable and delicious foods.

지속 가능하면서도 맛있는 음식을 만들 수 있습니다.

Things like meat replacements for seafood or dairy, for example.

해산물이나 유제품을 대체하는 음식뿐 아니라

Or even a new class of food that doesn't look like any of that stuff.

어디에도 속하지 않는 새로운 음식도 만들 수 있죠.

The possibilities are unlimited.

가능성이 무한합니다.

And we can do it in a way

균류 덕분에 환경 부담도 줄일 수 있습니다.

that has a fraction of the environmental footprint.

Now fungi are self-replicating organisms,

균류는 스스로 복제하는 생물체라서 아주 대량으로 만들 수 있습니다.

so we can make it in really huge quantities,

and help address the challenge of how we're going to make more food

환경 영향은 줄이고 식량 생산은 늘리는

and lower our impact on the planet.

It's a big challenge.

어려운 과제를 균류가 도울 수 있습니다.

We can do it with fungi.

And last but not least, fish feed.

마지막으로, 아주 중요한 어류 사료 얘기입니다.

I mean, here we are in Norway, right?

우리가 사는 이곳, 노르웨이는

The world's largest producer of salmon.

세계 최대의 연어 생산국이죠.

And what do we feed that salmon, as proteins?

연어에게 단백질원으로 주는 사료는 뭐죠?

Two things, primarily -- soy and fish meal,

주로 대두박과 어분, 두 가지입니다.

neither of which are sustainable sources of protein for the future,

두 가지 모두 미래에 지속 가능한 자원이 아닙니다.

because they contribute to overfishing in the oceans

사람들이 어분을 만들려고 바다에서 수산 자원을 남획하고

and land-use patterns that degrade, for some of the lands.

일부 토지에서 토지 이용률도 떨어지고 있기 때문이죠.

So we need to come up with more sustainable sources

어류 양식을 계속하려면 다른 방법을 찾아야 합니다.

in how we feed our fish.

And what if we could do it using fungi

만약 균류를 이용해서

to create the proteins to feed those fish?

양식 어류에게 줄 단백질을 생산할 수 있다면 어떨까요?

And we could do it in a way

식품 산업 부산물을 먹이로 해서 균류를 배양하는 방법으로

that we’re using byproducts of food industries

as food for our fungus when we grew it?

이 문제를 해결할 수 있다면요?

It would be an amazingly sustainable system

아주 획기적이고 지속 가능한 체계가 되겠죠.

and, dare I say it, it would help in our self-sufficiency.

아마 이 방법으로 인류는 자급자족할 수 있을 겁니다.

Now, one of the coolest things about being a fungal researcher

균류 연구자로서 무엇보다 흥분되는 건

is, with all that diversity out there,

그 어마어마한 다양성으로 볼 때,

probably the coolest thing that fungi can do,

균류가 해낼 수 있는 가장 멋진 일은

we haven't even uncovered yet.

아직 밝혀지지 않았다는 거죠.

The most amazing fungal discoveries are still waiting to be made.

희대의 발견이 우릴 기다리고 있습니다.

We're only scratching the surface of what we might be able to achieve

균류가 가진 엄청난 잠재력은 이제 겨우 시작일 뿐입니다.

with the help of fungi.

So I have a hope,

저는 희망을 봅니다.

제 희망은 균류를 골칫거리가 아닌

and my hope is that we transfer our fungal problems

into fungal solutions,

해결사로 바꾸는 겁니다.

that we look to the fungal world for new mindsets and new metaphors

제 희망은 균류를 보는 관점을 바꿔서

새로운 의미를 찾는 데 더해 새로운 재료까지 얻는 것입니다.

and even new materials,

as we think more collaboratively, regeneratively

그러니 더 나은 미래를 원하신다면

협업 능력과 재생력을 키우고

and with more biointelligence,

as we approach the future,

지혜롭게 생각하고 행동해 보세요.

just like fungi.

바로 균류처럼요.
