There is a pastor in Baltimore.

Year after year, it just kept showing up as this big thing

that there was nothing any of us could do anything about.

But the thing about Baltimore

is that it has never been the one to just be defeated.

So the story about the Baltimore Ceasefire

is that Baltimore looked the murder rate in the eye

and said, "What you're not going to do is snatch our greatness."

So two years ago, I'm at a 300 Man March meeting.

At the time, I was a leader in that movement.

And this guy named Ogun --

he's like a godfather of hip-hop in Baltimore --

he came over to me and he said,

"Yo, I have this idea about calling a ceasefire in Baltimore,

and I feel like you are somebody I should talk to about that."

당신하고 상의하면 좋을 것 같네요."

And I was like, "I'm absolutely somebody you should talk to about that,

그래서 제가 말했죠, "정말 잘 찾아 왔어요,

because that's something we should do."

우리가 아니면 누가 하겠어요."

And so we played phone tag and meeting tag,

하지만 서로 연락도, 회의도,

and two years went by and we never really sat down and talked about it.

So now we're in May of 2017.

My son Paul, he's 19 years old, he's driving me home from work one day,

and he says, "Ma, did you know that the murder rate in Baltimore

is higher than it's ever been?"

And I said, "What you mean it's higher than it's ever been?

그래서 제가 말했죠, "그 어느 때보다 높다니?

How is that possible?

그게 가능하니?

Like, I mean, what about people who say they have connections to the streets?

내 말은, 뒷골목 세계를 잘 안다는 사람들은 뭐하는 거야?

Why won't they use those connections and call a cease-fire or something?"

줄을 좀 대서 '휴전' 같은 것 좀 하면 좋잖아?"

And on and on I went

이렇게 계속 주절거렸는데,

from my own feelings of helplessness about what other people weren't doing.

사람들이 아무것도 안 하고 있는 것이 답답했던 거죠.

The next morning I woke up

다음 날 아침, 눈을 뜨고 깨달았어요.

and I realized that what I was really angry about

제가 정말 화가 난 건

wasn't about what other people weren't doing,

남들이 아무 것도 하지 않아서가 아니라,

it was that I had heard this message years ago,

몇 년 전 이런 연락을 받고도 아무 것도 하지 않은

and I hadn't moved on it.

제 자신 때문이었죠.

So it was about what I was supposed to be doing.

결국 해야 할 일을 하지 않은 제 자신이 문제였어요.

So I got up and I'm going,

"OK, if we could just have three days

"자, 딱 3일 동안만

where everybody in the city was committing,

nobody is going to kill anybody,

and we're going to celebrate life instead,

when can we do that?"

So it's May, I look at my calendar,

all right, I've got some free time the first weekend in August,

we'll do it August 4th through August 6th, right?

4일부터 6일까지가 좋겠네, 그치?"

So I'm all excited, I start driving to work,

그래서 신이 나서, 차를 타고 출근하는데,

and the more I drive, the scareder I get.

갈 수록 점점 더 두려운 생각이 드는 거예요.

And so I start going, "Never mind ...

그리곤 또 중얼거렸죠, "신경쓰지 말자..."

(Laughter)

I won't say this thing out loud.

"남들한텐 말하지 말자."

Nobody will ever know I was thinking it if I don't say it."

"말 안하면 내가 무슨 생각을 했는지 아무도 모를거 아니야."

But it wouldn't let me go,

하지만 그 생각이 머리를 떠나지 않았습니다.

because God loves to show up as us,

하나님은 인간의 모습으로 나타나기도 하고,

and because I look broken

망가진 제 모습에

and I'm always called to stand in my wholeness,

항상 온전한 모습으로 서라고 말씀하셨던 것 처럼,

there was a call on my life to say this thing out loud.

그 생각을 실천해 보라는 부름이었던 것입니다.

And because my city looks broken

우리 도시 또한 망가져 보였고,

and is always yearning to show up in its wholeness,

온전한 모습으로 서기를 바라기 때문에,

there were hearts that morning calling all through my chest

시민들이 힘을 모으면, 뭔가 굉장한 일을 할 수 있다는 걸

that people around this city wanted to do something great together.

그 날 아침에 가슴으로 느낄 수 있었어요.

And people who had already been killed in my city

그리고 우리 도시에서 살해당한 사람들이

were calling to me

제 온 몸에 느껴져,

up through my gut and my chest,

울컥하기도 했어요.

as a knot in my throat, "Yo, E, you cannot just let us be dead in vain

"에리카 당신은 큰 목소리를 가졌으니

when you know how to say this thing out loud."

우리의 죽음을 헛되게 하지마."

And I responded to them with my fear.

그리고 전 두려움 속에 대답했죠.

"But somebody might get killed anyway that weekend."

"하지만 이번 주말에 또 누군가 살해 당할지도 모르잖아."

And that was the moment where I had to accept

that maybe while we're out spreading this message --

마음이 흔들릴지도 모른다는 생각이 들었어요.

"Hey, nobody's going to kill anybody. We're going to celebrate life!" --

"자, 이제 살인하지 말고, 생명을 축복합시다!"

maybe somebody will be plotting to take a life right then and there,

누군가는 바로 그 순간, 그 자리에서 살인을 계획할 수도 있겠지만,

but now they would have a rumbling in their spirit.

지금은 마음의 울림이 있겠죠.

And so I knew it was time for my city

그리고 우리 도시의 사람들도

to have a collective rumbling in our spirit.

함께 느낄 마음의 울림이 있을 거라는걸 알게 됐어요.

So I got on the phone, got around to Ogun,

그래서 바로 '오건'한테 전화를 걸었죠,

and I said, "Yo, you said you wanted to do a cease-fire?

"전에 말했던 '휴전' 있잖아요?"

What is it? I'm ready."

"그게 뭐죠? 말해봐요."

So he said, "You know, when I hear about the Israelis and Palestinians at war,

그랬더니 그가 말했죠, "이스라엘과 팔레스타인이 전쟁하는 거 보면

I'm like, that's too bad, they should stop that,

'안타깝다', '그만 좀 하지' 하는 생각이 드는데,

but when I hear the word 'cease-fire,'

'휴전 협정'이란 말을 들으면,

that makes me pause and stop and really research what's going on."

하던 일도 멈추고, 무슨 일인지 찾아보게 되더라구요."

And he wanted Baltimore to get that same kind of attention

그는 볼티모어도 밖으로부터

from the outside,

그 정도의 관심을 받기를 원했고,

but introspection from the inside about what was going on with us.

안으로는 현 상태에 대해 성찰해야 한다고 생각했습니다.

And we talked about how it couldn't belong to one person.

그리고 혼자 힘으론 안된다고 했죠.

Not one person or one organization should call a cease-fire.

한 사람 또는 한 기관에서 일방적으로 '휴전 협정'을 맺을 순 없잖아요.

The whole city had to own it and do it together.

도시 전체가 참여하고, 지켜 나가야 했죠.

So we had our first meeting in May.

그래서 5월에 첫 회의를 했습니다.

About 12 or 15 people show up,

12에서 15명 정도 모였고,

and this is where it gets named the Baltimore Ceasefire,

볼티모어 휴전이란 이름도 정했죠.

because you know what that means when you hear the word "cease-fire."

"휴전"은 다들 아는 것처럼,

Just don't kill nobody.

그냥 아무도 죽이지 말라는 거잖아요.

And this is where the Baltimore Peace Challenge was born.

'볼티모어 평화 챌린지'는 이렇게 탄생합니다.

Because it's not just about not being violent.

단순한 비폭력이 아니라

It is about being purposefully peaceful.

목적의식이 분명한 평화를 지향하는 것이죠.

What is going on in your thoughts?

무슨 생각이 드세요?

What kind of petty things are you not saying out of your mouth?

혹시 별것 아니라고 참고 있는 말들이 있나요?

How are you responding in your behaviors to conflict?

마찰이 생기면 어떻게 행동하시나요?

I grabbed up five people who I trusted,

가장 신뢰하는 5명을 모아서

and the six of us became the organizing squad.

저를 포함해 6명으로 운영팀을 만들었어요.

So let's give them props real quick.

잠깐 그들에게 환호를 보내주죠.

On the count of three, I want you to yell "squad."

셋을 세면, "운영팀"하고 외치세요.

One, two, three: squad! Audience: Squad!

하나, 둘, 셋: 운영팀! 청중: 운영팀!

And it's Shellers's birthday. Happy birthday, Shellers.

오늘이 쉘러스 생일이네요. 생일 축하해요, 쉘러스.

Audience: Happy birthday!

And so we put out a press release,

그리고 보도자료까지 준비했지만

and the media told us, this is not really a story yet,

언론에선 아직 기사로 쓰기에 부족하다고

we will get with you on August 7th to see how the cease-fire went.

휴전이 어떻게 진행 됐는지 8월 7일에 다시 연락하겠다고 하더군요.

So we went, "Oh, word? Oh, all right then."

그래서 우리는 말했죠, "아, 그래요? 알겠어요, 그럼."

And Baltimore got to work,

그리고 볼티모어는 일하기 시작했습니다.

and not only did people send money to the PayPal account

포스터와 전단지 제작에 쓰일 비용을

so we could buy flyers and posters,

시민들이 페이팔 계좌로 보내줬고

people came and got the flyers and posters

직접 전단지와 포스터를

and they put them all around the city,

도시 전역에 뿌려 주면서

and people were having conversations with each other.

사람들은 대화하기 시작했어요.

What kind of resources do you need? What are you going through?

"필요한 게 뭐예요?" "힘든 거는요?"

What has happened to you?

"무슨 일 있나요?"

Because we understand the root causes of violence in this country.

이 나라에서 발생하는 폭력의 근원을 우리는 잘 알고 있습니다.

People who said it wouldn't work still ended their sentence

힘들거라고 말했던 사람들도 항상 끝엔 말했죠,

with "but please keep trying. Somebody needs to do something anyway."

"그래도 끝까지 해보세요. 누군가 뭐라도 해봐야죠."

Teenagers who would tell us

하루종일 밖에서 뭘하는지

about the stuff they were doing in the streets all day asked,

우리에게 말해주던 십대 아이들도 저희에게 물었어요,

"But can I have a poster to put it on my wall at night

"침대 옆에 붙일 포스터 하나 줄 수 있어요?"

so I can see it on my way to bed?"

"자러 갈 때 보려고요."

Gangsters were calling, saying,

갱들도 전화해서 말했죠,

"I can tell you where violence is not going to come from,

"폭력에서 안전한 곳이 있는데,

because we're committing to the Peace Challenge."

우리도 평화 챌린지란 걸 해보려고요."

And they kept their word.

그리고 그들은 약속을 지켰죠.

When people said, "It's not going to work,

사람들은 말했어요, "소용없어."

because somebody's going to kill over West or over East,"

"서부던 동부던 살인은 일어날 텐데 뭐."

we said, "That doesn't matter. It's about self-determination, yo.

하지만 저희는 말했죠, "상관없어요. 마음먹기 나름이니까."

You telling me you can't keep this three- or six-block radius safe?"

"셋에서 여섯 구역인데, 그것도 못 한단 말이에요?"

And they would say, "Don't get it twisted.

It's going to stay safe around here." And they kept their promise.

Four songs --

and I know it looks like I'm holding up five fingers,

four songs got made about the Baltimore Ceasefire,

and the one that most exemplifies it,

where a bunch of artists came together and made a song,

여러 음악가들이 참여해 만든 것인데,

that one is currently nominated for a Grammy out here. Right?

And so now what was happening

그리고 일어났던 일은,

was from the most beautiful corners of crack houses

아주 근사한 마약 소굴의 한켠에서부터,

to the grimiest corners of politicians' offices,

아주 더러운 정치인들의 사무실까지,

everybody --

모두들

was talking about this thing Baltimore was doing together. Right?

볼티모어인들이 함께한 이 일에 대해 얘기하고 있었던 거예요. 그렇죠?

And then, the weekend came:

그리고 바로 그 주말이 다가왔습니다:

events all over the city, people yelling "Happy Ceasefire Day!"

도시 전역에서 열린 행사에서 사람들은 외쳤죠, "휴전의 날 축하해요!".

Over 200 people got their records expunged and got jobs,

200명 넘게 전과기록을 말소해 직업을 가졌고,

and people went into drug recovery programs

어떤 이들은 약중독회복 프로그램도 시작했죠.

because of what was happening in our city that weekend.

모두 주말에 우리 도시에서 벌어진 일 덕분이었어요.

People were going, "But the air feels different in Baltimore.

사람들이 말했죠, "볼티모어의 분위기가 달라졌어."

Nobody's mother got that phone call last night.

"간밤에 자식이 죽었단 전화를 받은 엄마도 없어."

I didn't hear any gunshots."

"총소리도 못 들었어."

And on Saturday, Trey went to go get a job

토요일에 트레이는 일을 구하러 가는 길에

and was excited about it.

아주 신이 나 있었습니다.

At 24 hours of no killing,

24시간동안 아무도 살해당하지 않았기 때문에,

we were singing Kendrick Lamar. "We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright."

And then at 4:59 on Saturday,

we get a message that somebody was killed.

We didn't know his name, but it turned out to be Trey.

So we rushed over to Sargeant Street,

and we looked at the pavement,

and we said, "This is sacred ground because we make it so,

because everywhere in our city where people lose their lives to violence

And it wasn't just about upholding Trey and his transition

and sending love to his family.

It was about us pausing to really think about what must it feel like

20 minutes after you kill somebody?

Can't we pour love into that?

Because until we do, we will not heal this epidemic.

Later on in the day, we get another call.

그날 늦게, 전화 한통이 또 왔어요.

Dante is murdered.

'단테'가 살해당했죠.

So by the end of this day, we were shook.

하루 종일 충격에 빠져 있었어요.

In real life, we were shook,

정말 큰 충격에 빠졌죠.

because we had opened up our hearts together

왜냐면 모두들 마음을 열었고,

and changed the atmosphere of this city,

우리 도시의 분위기가 바뀌고 있었기 때문이죠.

and now our hearts were broken together.

그리고 모두의 마음이 함께 무너져 버렸어요.

And we had to be honest about the fact that last weekend,

솔직하게 얘기할게요.

when we lost six people to violence,

폭력으로 6명이 희생된 바로 전 주말보다

it didn't feel the way it felt this weekend when we lost these two,

2명이 희생된 이번 주말이 훨씬 힘들게 느껴진 사실이요.

because now we were paying attention.

지금은 우리 모두 관심을 두고 있기 때문이겠죠.

Now we were all hoping together

아무도 살해당하지 않기를

that nobody got killed.

우리 모두 바랬습니다.

And so we had to make a vow with ourselves

그리고 스스로 다짐했어요.

not to be numb anymore when we lose people in our city.

우리 도시에서 일어나는 살인에 무감각해지지 않겠다고요.

These two lives were going to remind us to vibrate higher and to move forward.

이 두사람의 목숨은 우리가 더 목소리를 높여 전진하게 했어요.

So as we move forward into Baltimore Ceasefire 365,

그래서 이제 볼티모어 휴전 365가 됐죠.

because there's work that needs to be done all year,

1년 내내 해야 할 일들이 있고

and there's another cease-fire happening next weekend,

다음주에 또 '휴전' 행사가 있으니까요.

Everybody wanted to come get this work from Baltimore,

and y'all could come get it. Right?

So as we push forward, we don't need to keep asking now

이 일을 하면서, 이젠 스스로에게 묻지 않죠,

"What can we do?"

"뭘 해야지?"

We have seen the power of collective consciousness.

공동체 의식이 가진 힘을 이제 체험했으니까요.

Y'all were the ones who misunderstood Baltimore.

여러분들 모두 볼티모어에 대해 오해하고 있었습니다.

Y'all thought Baltimore was just "The Wire."

볼티모어는 단지 드라마, "더 와이어"의 배경으로 생각했죠.

When we lost Freddie Gray,

프레디 그레이가 사망했을 때,

y'all saw the Baltimore uprising,

볼티모어에 폭동이 난 걸 알 거예요.

and people around this world mischaracterized it and misunderstood it.

What you failed to realize is Baltimore is the power to rise up,

and that is what we continue to do.

And so as we move forward, we see you, America,

But what you're not going to do is snatch my greatness.
