I saw these stories daily.

Systemic, preventable problems resulting in mothers and children dying

매분마다 2명의 5세 이하 어린이가 사망하고 있습니다.

in the most unjust of circumstances.

저는 여성 비뇨기과 실습의입니다.

하지만 제가 의학을 배우기 시작한 아주 초기에

In the next one hour,

three women will die while giving birth somewhere in India.

병원을 바탕으로 하는 해결책은 충분하지 않다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

Two children under age five die every minute in India.

또한, 인도가 가진 문제점의 규모를 생각해 볼 때

차이를 만들어내는 해결책은 확장이 가능해야 했고

I am a practicing urogynecologist,

but very early in my medical training,

집에 있는 마지막 여성과 아이들이 직접 접근할 수 있어야 했으며

I realized that hospital-based solutions were not enough.

And given the sheer scale of India's problems,

any solution that made a difference had to be scalable,

몇 년 사이에 모두가 휴대전화를 갖게 되었습니다.

accessible to the last woman and child directly in their homes,

and yet cost-effective and resource-light.

휴대전화처럼 간단한 기술 도구를 이용하면 어떨까?

And then the mobile phone came to India

and within a few years everyone had a mobile phone.

모든 인도 가정이 다 이용할 수 있는 그런 것 말이죠.

There are currently more mobile phones in India than toilets.

의료 제도의 극심한 제도적 격차를 줄이기 위해서요.

The idea then struck me.

Why not use a simple technological tool like a mobile phone,

어쩌면 우리는 매주 아니타에게 전화할 수 있었을 것입니다.

생명이 달린 중요한 정보를 전달할 수 있었겠죠.

which is available in almost every Indian household

아니면

휴대전화 기반 훈련을 제공해

to bridge the yawning systemic gaps in health care?

훈련을 받은 의료진이 아니타의 빈혈을 진단하게 할 수 있었을지도 모릅니다.

Maybe we could have simply called Anita weekly

아니타가 사는 그 지역에서요.

with critical lifesaving information.

이렇게 저의 NGO 아르만(ARMMAN) 이 탄생했습니다.

On the other hand,

maybe we could have provided mobile-phone-based training

우리의 프로그램 엠미트라(mMitra)와 킬카리(Kilkari)는

to the health worker who could have diagnosed Anita's anemia

무료로 제공되는 주간 통화 서비스입니다.

in the community itself.

Thus was born my NGO ARMMAN.

임신부터 유아기까지요.

Our programs, mMitra and Kilkari,

are free, weekly voice call services.

They provide preventive information directly to women

through pregnancy and infancy

There are multiple tries for every message,

In the second month of pregnancy itself,

it would have told her about the need to take an iron pill daily

When the third month arrived,

it would have sent her a reminder

and counseled her on how to take the iron pills.

For example, the need to avoid tea, coffee to improve the absorption of iron

변비와 같은 부작용 말이죠.

우리 콜센터 직원들에게 연락할 수 있었을 것입니다.

Two weeks later,

이것은 간단한 전화 통화입니다.

it would have spoken about how to tackle the adverse effects of iron pills,

like constipation.

그리고 의학적으로 더 나은 행동들을 이끌어낼 수 있길 바랐습니다.

If she had any query,

she could have reached out to our call center staff.

하지만, 제가 기대하지 않은 변형된 장점이 나타났고

These are simple voice calls.

이것은 저를 정말 놀라게 했습니다.

As a typical doctor,

I expected them to just inform

and hopefully lead to better health behaviors.

However, the one unexpected transformational benefit

But why should you care about our mothers and children?

The pandemic has made us confront this most implacable of truths.

A robust primary health care system is an absolute pillar

Improvement in maternal and child health
