This is the story of how I used comics

to help me in my role as a caregiver for my mom

in a way I couldn’t have imagined.

When I was thinking about how to tell that story,

이 이야기를 어떻게 풀어나갈지

I talked a lot about it with my mom.

엄마와 많이 상의했는데요.

That’s because the story is hers.

바로 엄마의 이야기이기 때문입니다.

My mom’s name is Jocelyn,

엄마의 이름은 조슬린이고

and we’re not alike.

저희는 정말 다릅니다.

She’s an optimist.

엄마는 긍정적이시죠.

I worry about all the terrible things that are going to go wrong.

저는 미래에 벌어질 온갖 끔찍한 일들을 걱정하는데요.

She’s impulsive.

엄마는 즉흥적이에요.

I’m cautious.

저는 신중하고요.

We’re so different

저희는 너무 달라서

that it took me a long time to realize we had something important in common.

중요한 공통점이 있다는 걸 깨닫는 데에 오래 걸렸어요.

We both respond to challenges by writing stories.

저희 둘은 창작의 고통을 알아요.

It took me such a long time to notice that we had this in common

이 공통점이 있다는 걸 알아차리기까지 꽤 긴 시간이 걸렸는데,

because the stories we wrote were so different.

쓰는 이야기가 너무 다르기 때문이에요.

She self-published a book of poems and short stories

저희 엄마는 파킨슨병 환자로서 20년 넘는 삶 이야기를

about living with Parkinson’s disease over the last 20 years.

단편과 시로 담아 개인 출판했어요.

I write comics like this one.

저는 이런 식으로 만화를 그렸고요.

And my comics are about stuff like life with my mom.

엄마와 함께한 삶에 대한 만화예요.

Now, over the years, my mom and I got used to her physical health challenges,

해가 지나면서 엄마와 저는 물리적 투병생활에 익숙해졌는데요,

but a while ago she started having cognitive challenges too.

얼마 전부터는 엄마에게 정신적 문제도 생기기 시작했어요.

She couldn’t write stories anymore,

엄마는 더 이상 글을 못 쓰게 되었고

and communication between us kept getting harder.

우리 사이의 의사소통이 갈수록 힘들어지고 있었죠.

My mom’s doctor didn’t get it.

엄마의 주치의는 이해를 못 했어요.

He asked her questions like, “Well, what city are you in?”

의사가 “어느 도시에 사시나요?“ 라고 물으면

She knows the answer.

엄마가 답을 했어요.

He asked, “What year is it?”

의사가 “현재 몇 년도인가요?” 라고 하면

Well, she knew that answer too.

엄마는 그 답도 했어요.

He just said, “You’re fine!”

그럼 의사는 “괜찮으시네요!” 라고 했죠.

But my mom had been having hallucinations.

하지만 저희 엄마는 환각증세를 보였어요.

She sometimes thought she was surrounded by ghostly people.

가끔 유령에게 둘러싸인다고 생각했어요.

The doctor couldn’t see it,

의사는 못 봤지만,

but my mom could ...

저희 엄마는 봤어요.

and now so can you.

이제 여러분에게도 보이시죠.

I want to tell you about graphic medicine,

저는 이 그래픽 약물에 때해 말씀드리고 싶은데

a growing movement

that refers to an unlikely partnership between health care and comics.

보건과 만화의 묘한 협업을 가리키는 운동입니다.

Now, at the heart of this movement

이 운동이 무엇이냐면

is a kind of a comic called a graphic pathography.

그래픽 병리학이라는 만화의 한 종류입니다.

A graphic pathography just means a story about illness

그래픽 병리학이란 말은 질병에 관한 이야기를

that’s told in a visual medium.

시각적 매체로 말하는 것입니다.

This comic is that kind of a story.

이 만화도 그런 종류의 이야기입니다.

You can see the ghostly hallucinations,

여러분도 유령 같은 환각을 볼 수 있고

and you’re invited to feel empathy for the patient’s experience.

환자의 경험에 공감하게 됩니다.

You can share my mom’s concern

진단할 수 없었던 증상이어서

that her symptoms have not been recognized.

엄마가 걱정했던 것도 이해하시겠죠.

That’s one way that words and pictures can work together

글과 그림이 협업해 간병 이야기를 전하는 또 다른 방식이고,

to tell a health care story.

And this is something anyone can do.

게다가 누구나 할 수 있는 방법이에요.

You might be thinking, “No, I’m not a comics artist.”

“난 만화가도 아닌데.” 라고 생각하신다면,

But that’s OK.

아니어도 괜찮아요.

You don’t have to be.

그럴 필요는 없어요.

A health care story can benefit from very simple pictures.

간병 이야기는 정말 간단한 그림들로도 효과적입니다.

I'm going to show you how,

어떻게 하는지 보여드리기 전에, 몇년 전으로 거슬러 올라가보죠.

but we’ve got to go back a few years

to a time before I drew those pictures that I just shared.

방금 보여드렸던 그림을 그리기 전으로요.

My mom’s condition got worse,

저희 엄마의 상태는 더 나빠졌고

and we were in the hospital a lot.

저희는 병원에 정말 오래 있었어요.

By this time, hallucinations and early-stage dementia made it hard

이 시기엔 환각과 초기 단계 치매 때문에

for her to explain what was going on.

엄마와 소통하는 게 더 힘들었어요.

And it was hard for the hospital staff to trust her.

그리고 병원 직원들도 엄마를 잘 안 믿었죠.

I was constantly hanging around the hospital.

저는 계속 병원에 붙어있었어요.

I felt like everything depended on me.

제가 모든 걸 해야 하는 기분이었어요.

Doctors and nurses came and went,

의사와 간호사가 드나들고, 말 없이 왔다가 갑자기 떠나면서

arriving and leaving unexpectedly.

I felt like I was standing at the side of a highway,

전 마치 고속도로 갓길에 서서 스쳐지나가는 운전자들을

trying to get the attention of the drivers racing past.

불러 세우려고 애쓰는 기분이었어요.

There was this one evening when I really had to get home to my kids,

어느 날 밤엔, 아이들 때문에 집에 가야만 했는데

but I didn't want to leave the hospital

병원을 떠나기 싫더라고요.

because my mom had been having this weird symptom.

그 당시 엄마의 증상이 너무 이상했는데

She was leaning off to the left,

엄마는 왼쪽으로 기울어져서

her head and upper body slumped sideways.

머리와 상체가 옆으로 치우쳤어요.

During the day, she’d slide out of her wheelchair,

낮에는 엄마가 휠체어를 타고 나갔는데

and her leg would get caught in the wheels.

다리가 바퀴에 사이에 끼어버려요.

And at night,

밤에는

her inability to straighten out her body made it hard for her to get a good sleep.

몸을 똑바로 가누지 못 해서 숙면을 취하기가 힘드셨습니다.

Now, the doctor was aware of this,

의사가 이 점은 알고서는

and we’d ruled out the possibility

뇌졸중처럼 위험한 것이 발생할 가능성은 배제한 상태였습니다.

that there was anything dangerous going on like a stroke.

But still, I didn’t want to leave

그래도 가기 싫더라고요.

because the night staff were going to arrive

야간 근무자가 올 텐데 그분들은 저희 엄마를 몰랐거든요.

and they didn't know my mom.

This sideways posture didn’t have anything to do

엄마는 치우친 자세 때문에 병원에 입원한 게 전혀 아닌데

with the reason she’d been admitted to the hospital.

They might just overlook it.

그분들은 모를 수도 있잖아요.

Or if they did notice it,

아니면 보고 나서도

they might assume this was just her regular posture.

엄마가 원래 그렇게 앉으신다고 여길 수도 있죠.

And it really wasn’t.

그런데 정말 아니었거든요.

I didn’t know what to do.

어떻게 해야할지 모르겠더라고요.

And that’s when it came to me:

그때 이런 생각이 났습니다.

a picture could help.

그림을 그려야겠다.

So I drew one.

그래서 하나 그렸어요.

I wrote “Help for Jocelyn.”

“조슬린 도와주기“라고 적고

“She leans to the left.

“왼쪽으로 기울어져요.

Please support wheelchair and bed with pillows.”

휠체어와 침대에서 베개로 받쳐주세요.”

I drew a circle around the leg that kept getting injured,

계속 다치는 다리에 동그라미를 그리고

and I drew my mom lying in bed,

엄마가 침대에 누워있는 모습도 그리고

and I wrote, “This is a comfy sleeping position!”

“이렇게 자면 편해요!” 라고 썼어요.

I taped it up on the wall above her bed,

엄마의 침대 위에 그림을 붙인 후

and I left.

집으로 갔습니다.

And suddenly I felt I didn’t need to keep standing

그제야 고속도로 갓길에 서있을 필요가 없다는 걸 깨달았어요.

at the side of the highway.

As if I just planted a big sign at the side of the road

갓길에 큰 표지판을 심어놓으면

that anyone passing by would see,

누구나 지나가면서 볼 수 있고

and I could go home.

저도 집에 가도 되니까요.

Thanks to that picture,

그 그림에 덕분에

I got a good night’s sleep.

저도 마음 편하게 잠들었어요.

And so did my mom.

저희 엄마도요.

When I went back the next morning,

다음날 아침 병원에 갔더니

I saw that someone had propped up her left arm with a pillow.

누군가가 엄마의 왼쪽 팔에 베개를 받쳐두었더라고요.

A nurse who I’d never met had seen the picture

제가 모르는 간호사가 그 그림을 보고

and known what to do.

어떻게 해야 할지 알았던 거죠.

This was the first of so many pictures I drew to help my mom,

이것이 제가 엄마를 위해서 그렸던 첫 번째 그림이었고

and what surprised me was how fast this worked.

효과가 굉장히 빨라서 놀랍더라고요.

I carried pictures like this around with me everywhere I went

저는 이런 그림을 항상 지니고 다녔어요.

to pull out whenever I needed them to save me explaining things again.

똑같은 설명해야 할 때마다 꺼내서 보여주려고요.

And I learned that a picture’s worth a thousand words

설명할 시간이 정말 없을 때는 그림이 수많은 말을 대신하더라고요.

that you just don’t have time to say.

Then my mom was moved to another part of the hospital,

그후 저희 엄마가 다른 병동으로 옮겼고

and there was a whole new team of staff members who didn’t know her,

거기엔 엄마를 모르는 직원들이 많았죠.

so I got ready to start drawing some new pictures.

그래서 새로운 그림을 그리기로 했어요.

But then I thought ...

그런데 드는 생각이

when I drew those first pictures for my mom,

제가 처음 엄마를 위해서 그렸던 그림은

I’d made choices about what health care issues to highlight on her behalf.

중요한 간병 사항을 엄마 대신 제가 골라서 그린 거란 말이죠.

At that time, she hadn’t had the words to speak for herself,

당시에는, 엄마가 의사소통을 할 수 없어서

so those pictures were just my best guesses about what might help.

제가 생각하기에 제일 좋겠다 싶은 걸 그렸던 거니까요.

But big questions arise when you try to tell someone else’s story.

그런데 다른 사람의 이야기를 쓸 때 아주 중요한 조건이 있어요.

That kind of collaboration depends on trust.

그런 협업은 신뢰를 바탕으로 해야 한다는 거죠.

So this time I sat down with my mom,

그래서 이번에는 엄마 앞에 앉아서

and I asked her what pictures I should draw.

무슨 그림을 그릴지 물어봤어요.

Her answers surprised me.

대답은 놀라웠어요.

She said, “Please tell them to call me Jocelyn.

엄마는 “조슬린이라고 부르라고 해 줘.

They don’t know I go by my middle name!”

날 그렇게 불러야 한다는 걸 몰라!” 라고 했어요.

She said, “Please tell them I’m left-handed,”

“왼손잡이라고 알려 줘.” 라면서,

and she asked me to draw a food tray

식판 위에 있는 걸

on which the items had been placed where her hand could reach them.

왼손으로 잡기 좋은 위치에 그려달라고 했어요.

She asked me to draw a picture that said, “Please remove lids!”

“뚜껑을 벗겨주세요!” 라고도 그려달라고 했어요.

That's because nerve damage in her hands makes fine motor skills a challenge.

엄마는 신경에 손상이 가서 쉬운 동작도 어려웠거든요.

She asked me to draw a picture that said, “Please fill cups halfway!

“컵을 반만 채워주세요! 컵이 너무 무거워요!” 도 그려달랬죠.

A full cup is too heavy!”

She asked me to draw a picture that said, “Please tell me your name!

“이름표가 안 보이니 이름을 알려주세요.”도 그려달랬어요.

I can’t read your name tag.”

And she asked me to draw a picture to go on the door of her room,

그리고 엄마 병실을 표시하도록 그림을 그려서

so she would know which room was hers.

병실 문에 붙여달라고 했어요.

These small details were a big deal.

이런 사소한 것들이 중요했던 거죠.

They gave me insight into challenges I hadn't even been aware of.

이렇게 전에는 미처 몰랐었던 어려움들을 알게 됐어요.

Now, in the picture of the door of my mom’s room,

병실 문에 붙일 그림은 엄마 얼굴로 그렸어요.

I drew her face.

I’ve drawn my mom so many times

전 엄마를 정말 많이 그렸기 때문에

I have a way of drawing her face,

엄마를 그리는 방식도 있는데,

but the point isn’t that it has to look anything like my mom.

중요한 건, 그림이 엄마를 전혀 닮지 않아도 돼요.

It could be a circle with two dots for eyes.

그저 원 하나랑 점 두 개로 눈을 그리면 되죠.

The point is that there’s a face;

얼굴은 의지가 있는 사람임을 표시해요.

there’s a person with a voice.

And if you listen to the picture,

그림을 잘 보면,

the voice can be heard because the face can be seen.

얼굴이 보이기 때문에 목소리도 들리는 거예요.

The message matters more because it comes from someone.

메시지는 사람에게서 나오기 때문에 중요한 겁니다.

After I’d drawn all those pictures,

제가 그림을 다 그리니까, 엄마가 이러더군요.

my mom asked me ...

“Now draw one more.

“이제 하나 더 그려 줘.

Draw me looking healthy.

건강한 모습을 그려 줘.

Draw me walking with my walker,

신발을 신고 걷는 모습을 그리고

and label it: “Jocelyn’s Goal.”

조슬린의 목표라고 적어 줘.”

She said, “The staff here are just going to see

“여기 직원들은 나를 그냥 병실에 있는

a sick old lady in the hospital bed,

아프고 혼란스러워 하는 노인네로만 볼테니

someone who’s weak and confused.

It’s easy to think that’s all I am.”

그게 다라고 여길 테니까.

She said, “I want them to understand what we’re working for.

우리의 노력을 직원들이 알아줬으면 해.

Sometimes you have to see it to believe it.”

때로는 보아야만 믿기는 법이야.”

If I’m honest,

솔직하게 말씀드리면,

I have to admit that sometimes I was the one

가끔은 저도 엄마를 그저

who just saw the sick old lady in the hospital bed.

병실의 아픈 노인네로 볼 때가 있었어요.

And trying to capture my mom’s goal in a picture

엄마의 목표를 그림으로 담으면서

helped me believe in it more myself.

저도 더 믿음이 생기더라고요.

My mom did reach her goal,

엄마는 정말 목표를 달성했고,

and a few months later,

몇 달 후에 두 발로 걸어서 나왔어요.

she walked out of the hospital on her own two feet.

She moved to long-term care,

요양할 수 있게 됐고

and for the first time her care needs were more managed and predictable.

필요사항들이 다루기 쉬운 것도 처음이었어요.

Now she did still hallucinate about being surrounded by ghostly people.

지금도 엄마는 여전히 환영을 보긴 하세요.

But my mom and I have always responded to challenges by writing stories,

하지만 엄마와 저는 항상 이야기를 쓰면서 어려움을 이기고

and now we’ve learned to write stories together ...

이제는 같이 이야기를 쓰게 되었어요.

like this one.

이렇게요.

Here’s me asking my mom, “How’s the writing going?”

제가 엄마에게 “잘 돼가?” 라고 묻는 장면이고요.

And she responds, “Not great.

엄마의 대답은, “별로. 유령작가라도 고용할까 봐!

Maybe I need a ghostwriter!

I already have the ghost!”

유령은 지금도 있으니까!”

Remember my mom’s doctor,

제가 말씀드렸던 의사를 기억하시나요?

the one who didn’t get it?

That comic about him was part of this same story.

그 의사 부분도 같은 만화입니다.

It’s a comic my mom and I wrote together

이 만화는 저와 엄마가 함께 그린

for a magazine dedicated to destigmatizing dementia

치매의 오명을 벗기고 환우와 주변인들을 돕도록 힘쓰는

and supporting people impacted by this disease.

정보지에 투고한 만화예요.

My mom’s name appeared in the byline right next to mine.

필자란에는 제 이름 바로 옆에 엄마 이름도 있어요.

And this comic was one of the ways we carefully documented her symptoms,

만화라는 방법을 통해 엄마의 증상을 상세하게 기록했더니

which led to her being able to start a new medication

새로운 치료를 시작할 수 있었고

that helped with those ghostly hallucinations.

이는 환영 증상도 개선했어요.

But more than that,

하지만 그보다

this comic let her use her experience

이 정보지를 읽는 다른 사람들도

to help others whom the magazine could reach.

엄마의 경험을 통해 배울 수 있었죠.

And besides,

게다가 정보지에 만화가 있다는 것 자체로 멋지지 않나요?

isn't it just cool that a medical magazine these days has comics?

My mom and I have continued to write comics together,

엄마와 전 계속해서 만화를 그리고 있고

and she’s continued to trust me

엄마는 저를 신뢰하며 치매를 앓으며 사는 이야기를 공유하고 있어요.

with sharing the stories of life with dementia

and life in long-term care during the pandemic.

코로나 시대에서 요양하는 이야기도요.

I think she's been OK with me sharing these vulnerable moments

제 생각에 엄마가 당시의 힘든 시간을 이렇게 공유하도록 허락한 건

because she knows I’m not just telling the story

제가 단지 어느 아픈 노인네의 투병이야기를 하는 게 아니기 때문이에요.

of a sick old lady in the hospital bed.

She knows I understand

비록 그림은 제가 그렸지만 제가 엄마를 이 만화의

that even though I may be the one drawing the pictures,

she’s a collaborator with an equal part in the work.

동등한 작업자로 여긴다는 걸 잘 아세요.

And here’s my mom saying ...

엄마는 이걸 두고

“Do not write about that in this comic!”

“만화에 그리지 마라!“고 했지만요.

The reason this all started didn't have anything to do with art or writing

예술이나 글쓰기 때문에 이걸 시작한 게 아니에요.

or even health care.

간병도 아니에요.

It came from me wanting to help my mom.

그저 엄마를 돕고 싶어서 시작했습니다.

And that’s the same power you have

이는 여러분이 돕고 싶은 사람을 향한 마음과도 똑같아요.

in your relationships with the people you care for.

You know their health care needs,

어떻게 간병해야 하는지 알고

you live their stories with them.

그들의 이야기를 함께 겪으니까요.

I understand you may still feel a bit skeptical

의사에게 스케치북을 보여주는 게

about showing up at the doctor’s office with a sketchbook,

조금 어색할 수도 있지만

but you may be surprised to discover

의료계가 이미 그래픽 약물에 익숙하다는 걸

that the people in your health care community

are already familiar with graphic medicine,

아시면 놀라실 거예요.

the growing movement at the intersection of health care and comics.

의료와 만화의 교차점에서 일어나는 이 활발한 활동도요.

They may already know how a picture can be an amazing time-saver

의사들은 그림이 시간을 단축시켜주고

or a tool for creating empathy and personal connections.

공감과 연민을 이끄는 도구라는 걸 이미 알 수도 있어요.

Just imagine if your new doctor opened your chart

여러분의 의사가 차트를 열었을 때

and saw pictures that sparked curiosity about the person,

증상뿐만 아니라 환자에 대해 궁금해진다고 생각해보세요.

not just the symptoms.

When I looked at all the pictures I’d drawn of my mom,

제가 엄마를 그린 그림을 보면

I did see her symptoms,

엄마의 증상도 보이고, 엄마도 보여요.

but I also see my mom.

She’s there in all the words and pictures that have continued to hold us together.

그림과 글이 우리를 단단히 잡아주는 세상에 계신 것이죠.
