Max Hawkins: I let algorithms randomize my life for two years | TED

I used to love waking up at exactly 7:00am.

When I lived in San Francisco,

and immediately go to my favorite coffee shop.

I had done the research, it was five stars, it was great.

And I would drink my coffee

그렇게 커피숍에서 커피를 마시고

and get onto my bicycle and ride into work.

자전거로 출근하는게 일상이었습니다.

And I had optimized my schedule to be perfect.

I was constantly, like, shaving off one or two seconds

저는 끊임없이 초 단위로 시간을 줄여가며

making it slightly faster

so I could get into work faster.

I was working as a software engineer at Google,

and in a lot of ways,

this was my dream job.

It felt like this was the thing

that the rest of my life was leading up towards.

I'd always wanted to work in software

And I was living in San Francisco,

which is a city that I love,

And every part of my life was perfectly tailored to my interests,

So one day I was at work and I started to read this paper,

a computer science research paper about predictive analytics.

And the gist of the paper was

that if you take someone's GPS trace,

like the listing of all the places that they've been in the past month or so,

and you feed it into a machine-learning algorithm,

you can predict with fairly high accuracy

where they're going to be on the following day.

And I thought this was kind of cool.

And I was thinking, like,

what would happen if you put my GPS trace into the algorithm?

So I was talking with my friend Kelly,

and we were planning something to do after work that day.

And I got onto Yelp and found this really great bar

And I started thinking, wait a second,

And that was kind of weird.

Because I thought that I ...

I know that I was the one making the choice, right?

저도 제가 결정을 내려야 한다는 것을 압니다.

But how did the computer know about that?

So that was a little disturbing.

그 사실이 조금 불편했습니다.

And since I'm an engineer, whenever I have a problem like this,

my instinct is to fix it,

to make something that solves the problem.

And so I decided to make an app

that would help me choose where to go on this evening.

And so the way that it works

is that the app looks at all the places

that are on Google maps in the city of San Francisco,

and then chooses one at random.

And then it calls an Uber.

And that car shows up at your location

It tells the Uber driver where the random place is,

And so it's a big surprise when you arrive.

And so I texted Kelly and I said, "We should do this."

there was an Uber driver at my apartment door.

Which, maybe that's pretty appropriate,

But we thought it was funny.

But it was also exhilarating

because here we were,

in this place that we never would have gone to otherwise,

doing something really different on a Friday night.

And I was hooked,

I started using this app

to go to all different places in San Francisco.

I went to museums randomly,

random grocery stores, random bars, random bowling alleys,

random florists.

And I started discovering

that there was an entire side to San Francisco

that I had been ignoring because of my preference.

And then I started thinking,

how else can I apply this concept to my life?

And so I started building other experiments that involved randomness.

I made a random YouTube video generator,

a random schedule generator,

a random diet club

that would randomly eliminate a food from my diet each week.

And it's cumulative, so eventually you just can't eat.

Random tattoo generator,

a random Spotify playlist,

a printer that prints out random suggestions of things to do.

A random Facebook event generator.

무작위의 페이스북에서 이벤트를 만드는 앱도 있습니다.

And the way that this one works

이것이 작동하는 방식은

is that in a city like Vienna on a given day,

특정한 날짜에 따라 비엔나 같은 도시에서

there are hundreds of Facebook events --

찾을 수 있는 진행중인

public Facebook events -- that are going on.

수백 개의 공개적인 행사 중

So it would choose one at random and say,

하나를 무작위로 골라

this is your plan for tonight.

And so I ended up showing --

And so I'd show up at events like Joe's birthday,

the eighth grade band recital, chess club, truck drivers school.

And it was really interesting

because these were communities that I knew nothing about

to talk about things that they cared about.

And there I was.

After a while,

I had the opportunity to transition my work into freelance,

which gave me a lot more flexibility about where I lived.

And so I decided,

you know, what if I could let the computer decide

what part of the world I lived in?

And so I wrote a program that figured out

every city that it was possible for me to live in,

And I started living this way

Even places that for an American are really off the beaten path,

like Essen, Germany and Gortina, Slovenia.

미국인들에게 익숙하지 않은 곳들도 가보았습니다.

And every time I would go to a new city,

그리고 새로 방문하는 도시마다

I would do the same sort of stuff I was doing in San Francisco,

샌프란시스코에서 하던 방식으로

go to random events, meet random people.

무작위로 이벤트에 참가해 무작위로 사람들을 만났습니다.

And I'd live there for two to three months

그리고 두세 달동안 그 지역에 살면서

and then ask the computer again for the next location.

컴퓨터에세 다음에 갈 장소를 묻곤 했습니다.

I did this for two years.

Paradoxically, giving up control to this machine

모순적이게도 기계에게 결정을 맡긴 삶은

actually made me feel more free than when I was making choices,

because I discovered that ...

My preference had blinded me from the complexity

and the richness of the world.

And following the computer gave me the courage

컴퓨터의 결정을 따르는 것은

to live outside of my comfort zone,

제 생활의 안락함을 벗어나

to discover parts of the human experience that I ignored

저와 너무 다르거나 제 것이 아니라고 생각해

because they were too different

외면하고 있던 인간적인 경험을

or not for me.

도전하게 해주는 용기를 주었습니다.

I ended up in Mumbai, India for a while,

저는 인도의 뭄바이에서 잠깐 머물렀던 적이 있습니다.

and I was going to a lot of Facebook events when I was there.

그 곳에서 많은 페이스북 행사에 참여하며 다녔죠.

And one day, the computer sent me to this yoga class

그러던 어느 날 요가 수업에 참여하게 되었습니다.

and I'm really bad at yoga,

저는 요가를 정말 못하지만

but I went anyway.

그래도 가보았습니다.

I found myself descending into a downward dog

저는 다운독 자세를 하면서

when I had a revelation.

깨달음을 얻었습니다.

Because I was thinking about, you know,

이렇게 무작위로 행동하는 것이

this random stuff is really freeing,

저를 정말 자유롭게 해준다고 생각하고 있었죠.

it's sort of putting me outside of my bubble, my comfort zone.

제게 편안한 공간에서 벗어나는 기분이었습니다.

But really how random is it?

그런데 얼마나 무작위한 것일까요?

Because this was not my first yoga event in Mumbai.

사실 제가 뭄바이에서 한 요가는 그때가 처음이 아니었습니다.

In fact, it was my third that week.

And if you think about it,

생각해보면

it's not surprising that you see patterns like this.

이런 패턴을 발견하는 것은 놀랄 일이 아닙니다.

Because I was choosing randomly

저는 무작위로 골라지지 않은 목록에서

from a list of things that was decidedly not random.

무작위로 골랐기 때문이죠.

The list of Facebook events that are happening in a city

페이스북에서 검색되는 행사들은

is very influenced by the things that are going on in a city like that.

그 지역의 행사 경향에 따라 크게 영향을 받습니다.

And if you think about it, every time you make a choice,

그리고 저희는 행사를 고를 때마다

you're not just making it on your own.

애초에 고유의 목록을 만드는 것이 아니라

You're selecting from a list,

a menu of choices

that was designed by someone or something else.

And whatever freedom that you have in that choice

is necessarily constrained by social structures, customs and history

that provide the context for that selection.

So initially, I thought of this as a way of getting outside of my bubble.

저는 처음에 이 무작위성을 틀에서 벗어나는 방법으로 생각했습니다.

As, you know, transcending myself, my preference.

제 자신과 기호를 넘어서는 시도라고 생각했죠.

But eventually I started to think about it differently.

I started to think about it as a way of taking a photograph.

When I was in a place like Mumbai,

it was more likely that I would show up at a yoga event.

But if I was in Vienna,

maybe a music event would be more likely.

Every time that I was choosing randomly in a city,

what I was doing was making an inquiry, asking,

"Mumbai, tell me what you're about."

“뭄바이, 당신은 어떤 특징이 있나요?”

And then the answer would tell me something about the structure of that city

and my relationship to it

and its relationship with the rest of the world.

세상과의 관계에 대해서 답변을 받아왔던 것입니다.

And so I ...

I had, like, a really tidy ending for this previously.

And as I was coming up here, I decided to scrap it, because ...

You know, I think that, like, a problem with TED Talks often

아시다시피 TED Talk 의 문제점은

is that they wrap up in a tidy bow

발표자들이 발표 후에 깔끔한 인사로 마무리를 하고

and then you can go away without really thinking about it.

청중들은 그 강연에 대해 아무 생각없이 돌아간다는 것입니다.

You can sort of just --

It feels like everything is OK at the end.

And I think ...

제 생각에는

In the world that we're living in,

there are a lot of real problems.

And I think that these questions of algorithmic control

play a lot into them.

해결에 크게 이바지할 것입니다.

We're talking right now about the role

that Facebook had in the American election.

There are a lot of questions

about the ways that these algorithms are controlling our lives.

And so, I don't know,

I don't know what I'm saying

and I don't have, like, a very clear conclusion.

But I would just encourage you to try to be experimental

when it comes to interacting with these algorithms.

Because if you just do the defaults,

follow your preference,

go in the direction that everything else is going,

it's really easy to get caught in a place where you can be controlled.

통제받는 환경에 놓이기 쉽기 때문입니다.
