I believe there is beauty

사실 꽤 복잡한 일입니다.

That's a complex idea,

because the things that must be said are not always lovely.

But somehow,

if they're reflective of truth,

진실을 반영한다면

I think, fundamentally, that makes them beautiful.

There's the aesthetic beauty of the work

제 작업에는 때론 트로이 목마처럼

that in some cases functions as more of a Trojan horse.

숨겨진 아름다움이 있습니다.

It allows one to open their hearts to difficult conversations.

사람들의 마음을 열고 보다 어려운 대화로 이끄는 거죠.

Maybe you feel attracted to the beauty,

당신이 아름다움에 이끌리고,

and while compelled by the technique,

테크닉이나

the color,

색감,

the form or composition,

형식 혹은 구도에 눈길을 뺏긴 와중에

maybe the difficult conversation sneaks up.

골치 아픈 논의로 슬며시 빠져드는 거죠.

I really taught myself how to paint

사실 제가 그리는 법을 익힐 수 있었던 건

by spending time at museums

미술관에서 시간을 보내며

and looking at the people that --

거장이라 불리는 작가들의 작품을

the artists, rather -- that I was told were the masters.

Looking at the Rembrandts ["The Night Watch"],

렘브란트 ["야경"],

Renoir ["Luncheon of the Boating Party"],

Manet ["Luncheon on the Grass"],

마네의 작품을 보면서 ["풀밭 위의 점심 식사"],

it becomes quite obvious

깨달은 게 있다면

that if I'm going to learn how to paint a self-portrait

만약 제가 이 작가들을 연구해서

by studying those people,

자화상 그리는 법을 배울 때

I'm going to be challenged

제가 막히게 될 부분은

when it comes to mixing my skin

저나 제 가족의 피부색을

or mixing the skin of those people in my family.

There's literally formulas written down historically

백인의 피부를 표현하려면

to tell me how to paint white skin --

그야말로 역사적으로 기록된 공식을 따르면 됩니다.

what colors I should use for the underpainting,

밑칠을 할 때 어떤 색을 써야 하고

what colors I should use for the impasto highlights --

밝은 부분에 어떤 색을 올려야 하는지 공식화되어 있어요.

that doesn't really exist for dark skin.

하지만 어두운 피부를 표현하는 방법에 대한 기록은 없습니다.

It's not a thing.

It's not a thing

because the reality is, our skin wasn't considered beautiful.

The picture, the world that is represented in the history of paintings

doesn't reflect me.

It doesn't reflect the things that I value in that way,

and that's the conflict that I struggle with so frequently,

is, I love the technique of these paintings,

I have learned from the technique of these paintings,

and yet I know that they have no concern for me.

And so there are so many of us who are amending this history

in order to simply say we were there.

Because you couldn't see doesn't mean we weren't there.

우리를 볼 수 없다고 해서 우리가 존재하지 않았다는 뜻은 아니니까요.

We have been there.

우리는 이곳에도

We have been here.

저곳에도 있었습니다.

We've continued to be seen as not beautiful,

역사는 우리 인종이 미의 기준에 부합하지 않는다고 치부해 왔죠.

but we are,

하지만 우리는 아름답고

and we are here.

바로 여기 존재합니다.

So many of the things that I make

제 작품의 대부분이 이런 생각에 힘을 싣고자 하는

end up as maybe futile attempts to reinforce that idea.

어쩌면 헛된 시도라고 볼 수 있죠.

Even though I've had the Western training,

my eye is still drawn to the folks who look like me.

And so sometimes in my work,

I have used strategies like whiting out the rest of the composition

in order to focus on the character who may go unseen otherwise.

I have cut out other figures from the painting,

회화 작품에서 다른 인물들을 오려내기도 하는데요.

one, to either emphasize their absence,

or two, to get you to focus on the other folks in the composition.

둘째로 화면에 남겨진 인물들을 눈여겨 볼 수 있도록 하기 위해서죠.

So "The Jerome Project," aesthetically, draws on hundreds of years

of religious icon painting,

a kind of aesthetic structure that was reserved for the church,

It's a project that is an exploration of the criminal justice system,

not asking the question "Are these people innocent or guilty?",

but more, "Is this the way that we should deal with our citizens?"

이게 과연 시민을 다루는 적합한 방법인지 질문을 던지고자 했습니다.

I started a body of work,

이 시리즈를 시작했던 계기는

because after being separated from my father

제가 아버지와

for almost 15 years,

거의 15년간 떨어져 지내다가

I reconnected with my father, and ...

재회했던 때였습니다.

I really didn't know how to make a place for him in my life.

그때 저는 아버지를 어떻게 받아들여야 할지 몰랐습니다.

As with most things I don't understand,

이해가 가지 않는 것을 예술로 풀어내는 제 습관처럼

I work them out in the studio.

작업실에 앉아 고민하기 시작했죠.

And so I just started making these portraits of mug shots,

그리고 용의자 사진을 바탕으로 초상화를 제작하기 시작했습니다.

starting because I did a Google search for my father,

아버지 이름을 구글에 검색했던 게 시작이었어요.

just wondering what had happened over this 15-year period.

도대체 15년간 아버지에게 무슨 일이 있었고

Where had he gone?

어디에 있었던 걸까?

And I found his mug shot, which of course was of no surprise.

아버지의 용의자 사진을 찾을 수 있었고 그건 그리 놀랍지 않았어요.

But I found in that first search 97 other Black men

하지만 한 번의 검색에서

아버지와 같은 성과 이름을 가진 흑인 97명의

with exactly the same first and last name,

and I found their mug shots, and that -- that was a surprise.

용의자 사진을 함께 찾을 수 있으리라곤 상상도 하지 못했습니다.

And not knowing what to do,

무엇을 해야 할지 모른 채

I just started painting them.

그저 그들을 그리기 시작했습니다.

Initially, the tar was a formula that allowed me to figure out

처음에 타르를 사용했던 건

how much of these men's life had been lost to incarceration.

But I gave up that,

하지만 그것을 포기하고 나니,

and the tar became far more symbolic

as I continued,

because what I realized is

the amount of time that you spend incarcerated is just the beginning

of how long it's going to impact the rest of your life.

So in terms of beauty within that context,

I know from my friend's family

who have been incarcerated,

who are currently incarcerated,

folks want to be remembered.

Folks want to be seen.

지켜봐 주길 원해요.

We put people away for a long time,

우리가 사람을 구금할 때

in some cases,

어떤 경우엔

for that one worst thing that they've done.

So to a degree,

it's a way of just saying,

And I think that, as a gesture,

In the painting "Behind the Myth of Benevolence,"

there's almost this curtain of Thomas Jefferson

painted and pulled back to reveal a Black woman who's hidden.

This Black woman is at once Sally Hemings,

but she's also every other Black woman

who was on that plantation Monticello

and all the rest of them.

대변하기도 합니다.

The one thing we do know about Thomas Jefferson

is that he believed in liberty,

그건 바로 그가 자유를 신봉했다는 겁니다.

maybe more strongly than anyone who's ever written about it.

아마 자유에 대한 글을 써본 그 누구보다도요.

And if we know that to be true, if we believe that to be true,

우리가 그게 맞는 걸 알고, 사실이라고 믿는다면

then the only benevolent thing to do in that context

이런 맥락에서 할 수 있는 단 하나의 미덕은

would be to extend that liberty.

And so in this body of work,

I use two separate paintings

that are forced together on top of one another

to emphasize this tumultuous relationship between Black and white

in these compositions.

And so, that --

that contradiction,

that devastating reality that's always behind the curtain,

what is happening in race relations in this country --

that's what this painting is about.

The painting is called "Another Fight for Remembrance."

The title speaks to repetition.

The title speaks to the kind of violence against Black people

즉 흑인을 대상으로 자행되어온 경찰의 폭력을

by the police

that has happened and continues to happen,

이전에도 있었던 일이 반복해서 일어나고,

and we are now seeing it happen again.

현재도 우린 비슷한 상황을 지켜보고 있죠.

The painting is sort of editorialized as a painting about Ferguson.

이 작품은 퍼거슨에서 일어난 일에 대한 회화적 논설이라 할 수 있습니다.

It's not not about Ferguson,

이는 퍼거슨 사건에 대한 것이 아니지 않고,

but it's also not not about Detroit,

The painting was started because

on a trip to New York

These two police officers with their hands on their gun

told us to stop.

They put us up against the wall.

They accused me of stealing art

제가 미술 작품을 훔치려 한다는 이유로요.

out of a gallery space where I was actually exhibiting art.

제가 전시를 열고 있던 바로 그 갤러리에서 말이죠.

And as they stood there with their hands on their weapons,

그들은 총에 손을 떼지 않은 채 서 있었고,

I asked the police officer what was different about my citizenship

저는 제가 가진 시민으로서의 권리가

than that of all of the other people

그 순간 경찰에게 제지를 당하지 않는 다른 사람들의 시민권과

who were not being disturbed in that moment.

어떻게 다른지 경찰에게 물었습니다.

He informed me that they had been following us for two hours

and that they had been getting complaints about Black men,

This series of paintings is about Black mothers.

The series of paintings takes place in a supersaturated,

maybe surrealist world,

not that far from the one we live in.

But in this world,

the children of these Black women

are disappearing.

What this work is really about is the trauma,

the things that Black women and women of color in particular

in our community

have to struggle through in order to set their kids out

자녀들이 자리 잡을 수 있도록 하기 위해 겪는

on the path of life.

What's encouraging for me

저를 기쁘게 했던 것은

is that this practice of mine

제가 작업을 하면서

has given me the opportunity

우리 공동체에 있는 청년들과

to work with young people in my community.

함께할 수 있는 기회를 얻었다는 겁니다.

I'm quite certain the answers are not in me,

저는 답이 제 안에 없다는 걸 잘 압니다.

but if I'm hopeful at all,

그러나 희망을 품자면,

it's that they may be in them.

그 어린 친구들은 답을 찾아낼 수 있을 겁니다.

"NXTHVN" is a project that started about five years ago.

"넥스트헤이븐"은 제가 5년 전에 시작한 프로젝트입니다.

NXTHVN is a 40,000-square-foot arts incubator

코네티컷 주 뉴헤이븐 시의 딕웰 지역 중심가에 있는

in the heart of the Dixwell neighborhood

in New Haven, Connecticut.

This is a predominantly Black and Brown neighborhood.

Our neighborhood, in many ways, has been disinvested in.

Schools are struggling to really prepare our population

I know that creativity is an essential asset.

It takes creativity

to be able to imagine a future

that is so different than the one that is before you.

창의력이 필요하죠.

And so every artist in our program has a high school studio assistant:

그래서 저희 프로그램에 소속된 작가들은 모두 고등학생 조수를 둡니다.

there's a high school student that comes from the city of New Haven

뉴헤이븐 시에서 온 학생이 작가와 일하면서

who works with them and learns their craft,

기술을 익히고

learns their practice.

And so we've seen the ways

저희는 보았습니다.

in which pointing folks at the power of creativity

창의력이 가진 힘을 보여주는 것이

can change them.

아이들을 바꿀 수 있다는 걸요.

Beauty is complicated,

아름다움이란 우리가 정의하는 방식 때문에

because of how we define it.

파악하기 쉽지 않습니다.

I think that beauty and truth

아름다움과 진실은

are intertwined somehow.

어쩐지 긴밀히 얽혀있다고 생각합니다.

There is something

진실을 말하는 데에서 오는

beautiful

아름다움을

in truth-telling.

느낄 수 있어요.

That is:

그건 바로

that as an act, truth-telling

진실을 말하는 행위와

and the myriad ways it manifests --

진실을 드러내는 무수히 많은 방식에

there's beauty in that.

아름다움이 녹아있다는 겁니다.
