I love a depressing song ...

저는 우울한 노래를 좋아합니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

you know?

그런데 말이죠.

I've been writing them for 15 years now,

저는 지금까지 15년 동안 그런 곡들을 만들어 왔어요.

and to be honest, over that time,

솔직히 그런 가운데

I've come to kind of believe that they're not really depressing at all.

그런 곡들이 결코 우울하지 않다는 걸 알게 되었습니다.

In fact, I think they're kind of the most important songs we have.

사실 그런 노래들은 우리 삶에서 정말 중요하다고 생각합니다.

Songs that sing of sorrow,

슬픔을 노래하는 곡들..

of grief,

비탄

of longing,

그리움

of the darker side of love,

사랑의 어두운 면

the underside of being alive,

삶의 저면에 대한 노래

these are the songs I just never tire of hearing

이런 노래들은 결코 질리지 않습니다.

and I never tire of writing,

작곡도 지겹지 않죠.

because they make me feel less alone.

그런 노래들은 외로움을 덜어주기 때문입니다.

They speak to a very real part of being human

인간이란 존재의 진정한 내면에 말을 건넵니다.

that can often be hidden in fear and shame

두려움과 부끄러움 뒤에 때로는 숨기기도 하고

and pushed deep down where it lingers and rots.

마음 속 깊이 묻어두어 삭히는 감정에 이야기를 건넵니다.

But I think in listening to these songs --

하지만 이런 노래들을 듣노라면..

really listening --

정말 귀기울다보면

can allow us to refeel these hard emotions,

그런 힘든 감정들이 새롭게 느껴집니다.

but in a cathartic and healing way.

카타르시스와 치유로 다가오죠.

In a way that reminds us, as we listen, that we're not alone in darkness.

그렇게 노래를 듣다보면 어둠 속에서도 외롭지 않습니다.

There's a Japanese phrase known as "mono no aware,"

일본어에 있는 말 중에 "모노노 아와레"라는 말이 있어요.

which roughly translates as "the bittersweet poignancy of things,"

"깊이 파고드는 괴로움"으로 직역할 수 있습니다.

or the pathos or "ahness" of things.

혹은 비통함이나 "아휴.." 같은 탄식이죠.

It's a valuable awareness of impermanence,

그것은 인생의 덧없음에 대한 소중한 깨달음입니다.

both a kind of gentle, transient sadness as things pass by in life,

우리 삶을 스쳐 지나가는 일시적인 조용한 슬픔과

but also a deeper, softly lingering sadness

그뿐 아니라..

모든 현실의 덧없음이 주는 깊고 아련한 슬픔이죠.

about the impermanence of all reality.

"Mono no aware" can be manifest in lots of life stories and moments

"모노노 아와레"는 삶의 이야기와 모든 순간에서 찾을 수 있습니다.

and songs.

노래에도 담을 수 있죠.

한 예로써 일본 문화에는 벚꽃축제라는 것이 있습니다.

One example in Japanese culture is the celebration of the cherry blossom.

The cherry blossom in and of itself is no more impressive

벚꽃 그 자체로는 그다지 인상적인 부분은 없습니다.

than that of an apple or orange tree,

사과나무나 오렌지 나무와 다름없죠.

but what sets it apart is its brevity.

하지만 덧없음에서 그것들과 차별됩니다.

Cherry blossoms fall within a single week --

벚꽃은 단 일주일만에 지고 맙니다.

can be whisked away on the gentlest breeze --

아주 부드러운 미풍에도 꽃이 흩날리게 되죠.

and it's this that makes it more beautiful.

바로 그 점 때문에 더 아름다운 것입니다.

It's utterly fragile,

너무나 부서지기 쉽다는 것.

and fragility gives life its poignancy.

그 연약함이 삶을 덧없게 하죠.

Now, being a cheery chap,

이제 쾌활해져라.

nothing speaks to me more than this, and --

이 말을 정말 많이 들었어요.

(Laughter)

you know, I think it's been the essence of my songwriting for years,

수년간 곡을 써올 수 있었던 것은 그 덕분이라고 생각해요.

of what moves me to write,

저로 하여금 곡을 쓰도록 하고

what inspires me to sing.

노래하도록 영감을 주었습니다.

Because pain and grief and doubt,

왜냐하면 고통, 슬픔 그림고 의심은

when it's made manifest in music, in song --

음악과 노래로 표현되고

when it's made beautiful in poetry and painting,

시와 그림을 더 아름답게 해줍니다.

it can build a community and a kinship

공동체와 유대감을 만들어주죠.

in the knowledge that we are none of us alone in darkness.

누구도 어둠 속에 혼자가 아님을 알게 해줍니다.

My next song is one that I call "Killing Me,"

다음 부를 노래는 "힘들어요(KIlling me)"입니다.

and as the name suggests,

제목으로 아시겠지만

it's not a dance floor favorite.

춤추기에 어울리는 곡은 아니에요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But it isn't miserable.

하지만 우울하지는 않습니다.

It's full of love and hope.

사랑과 희망이 가득한 곡이죠.

And I think it exemplifies everything I've been talking about.

제가 지금까지 말씀드린 모든 것을 이 곡이 대변해준다고 생각합니다.

And it's the first song I've written from the perspective of somebody else,

그리고 이 곡은 제가 다른 이의 관점에서 쓴 최초의 곡입니다.

specifically my grandmother,

바로 저의 할머니죠.

as she lives on without my late grandfather,

할아버지가 돌아가신 뒤에 홀로 지내시며

as she experiences new things in her life --

그녀 삶에서 새로운 것들을 경험하고 계십니다.

her grandchildren getting married,

손자 손녀들이 결혼을 했고

having their own children,

그들이 또 아이를 낳았고

speaking at TED --

TED에서 강연도 하고 있네요.

all the while she lives without,

그녀 홀로 지내고

and all the while she misses her soul mate.

영혼의 동반자를 그리워 하며 말이죠.
