Wait, I thought nuclear energy was bad.

잠깐, 원자력은 나쁜 거 아니었나요?

Yet here is a scientist and a TED speaker

여기 과학자이자 TED 연사인 분은

making it sound good.

좋은 것처럼 말씀하시네요.

It sent me on a journey,

여기서 시작해서 수년 동안

I spent years reading papers, talking to scientists,

논문을 읽고 과학자들과 이야기했습니다.

and I always asked them the same question:

What do you think about nuclear power?

Their responses were shockingly similar.

In the last seven years,

My wake-up call came after seeing the fires ravage the world in California,

I decided I wanted to turn my growing sense of anger and despair

So I had an unusual idea:

I should be a nuclear energy influencer.

I wanted to make nuclear energy cool.

Inspired by internet culture,

I created a digital version of me and called her Isodope.

a little weird,

but she always tells the truth.

It's carbon-free, emission-free, pollution-free electricity.

Then I use this plant-based serum called --

‘원자력 발전을 중단하면 화석 연료를 써야 할 거예요.’

when a nuclear plant is shut down, it is replaced by fossil fuels.

안 좋은 일이죠.

That's bad.

Isodope is like a dealer of good memes.

아이소도프는 올바른 밈을 파는 사람과 같습니다.

When I say meme, you probably think of something like this.

밈이라고 하면 아마 이런 걸 떠올리실 텐데요.

(Laughter)

What I mean by it is a fixed belief or idea, good or bad,

제가 말하는 밈은, 좋든 나쁘든 확립된 믿음이나 생각으로서

that spreads from person to person and defines how we see the world.

사람들 사이로 퍼져서 세계관을 정의하는 것입니다.

For example,

예를 들어

people should have equal rights.

“사람은 동등한 권리가 있다.”

Birds aren't real.

“새는 진짜가 아니다.”

It's a thing.

Nuclear energy is bad.

When it comes to nuclear power,

원자력의 경우에는

the world has been sold a bad meme.

나쁜 밈들이 세상에 넘쳐나고 있습니다.

An outdated one.

시대에 뒤떨어진 것들이죠.

Let's go back in time.

시간을 거슬러 가 봅시다.

It all started with the anti-nuclear movement of the 1970s.

나쁜 밈은 1970년대 반핵 운동에서 시작되었습니다.

The movement was driven in large part

이 운동의 큰 원동력은

by an understandable fear of nuclear weapons.

핵무기에 대한 공포였고 타당했습니다.

And I get it.

저도 이해가 됩니다.

It must have been terrifying to grow up in the '50s and '60s

fearing a nuclear attack.

But here's the problem.

Their logic was: nuclear bombs are bad,

therefore nuclear energy is bad.

Which, if you think about it, is like saying: the electric chair is bad,

The case against nuclear power was never based on science,

원자력에 대한 반론은 과학적인 근거가 전혀 없지만

but the anti-nuclear meme was very catchy.

반원자력 밈은 매우 매력적입니다.

In the decades that followed,

aspiring engineers didn't choose nuclear engineering.

Politicians got points for closing nuclear plants,

even though it always led to higher carbon emissions.

In the last 10 years,

we have spent trillions of dollars on renewables,

yet we only get eight percent of our electricity from wind and solar.

but to me, it's clear that we need more.

Now most people today aren't exactly anti-nuclear

as much as they’re “meh.”

Not passionately against it, but they've heard of Chernobyl.

They've seen images of leaking green barrels.

They have a vague feeling it's bad.

And remember, that's where I used to be.

Until I saw this chart.

The only thing you need to take away from this chart

is that nuclear power has the lowest life cycle emissions

of all energy sources,

producing only three tons of CO2 per gigawatt hour of electricity.

And I could keep talking like this all day long, but let's be real,

this is not changing minds on social media.

So I do things a little bit differently.

The problem is that nuclear accidents are dramatic.

While fossil fuel damage is boring.

I'm literally falling asleep talking about it.

최근 연구를 보면 매년 870만 명이 화석 연료 때문에 죽어요.

Recent studies say that 8.7 million people die from burning them every year.

This would be like having 5.8 Chernobyls a day.

매일 체르노빌 사고를 5.8번 겪는 것과 같죠.

I'm just a humble influencer,

저는 그저 그런 사람이지만 제가 보기엔 화석 연료가 더 나쁘네요.

but I think this means fossil fuels are worse.

(Laughter)

Most people have a feeling airplanes are more dangerous than cars

대부분은 비행기가 차보다 더 위험하다고 느낍니다.

because when a plane crashes, it makes the headlines.

비행기가 추락하면 머리기사에 나오니 강하게 기억에 남는 겁니다.

It's memorable.

Of course, we know the opposite is true.

물론 사실은 반대라는 걸 우리는 압니다.

Planes are significantly safer than cars,

비행기는 차보다 훨씬 안전합니다.

just like nuclear power is significantly safer than fossil fuels.

원자력이 화석 연료보다 훨씬 안전한 것처럼 말입니다.

but there are people who spent decades studying this issue.

Finland is almost done building

the world's first nuclear waste repository.

They're storing it deep underground in geologically stable locations.

Sweden is about to do the same.

I know you're worried about what may happen 19,000 years from now, but ...

Again, just a humble influencer,

but we might not make it that far if we keep burning fossil fuels.

By the way, most think nuclear energy waste looks like this.

그런데 대개 원자력 폐기물이 이렇게 생긴 줄 아시더군요.

It actually looks like this.

Fully contained in concrete casks that are so good at blocking radiation

방사선을 아주 잘 차단하는 콘크리트 용기에 들어 있어서

I might do a photo shoot there.

저는 저기서 사진도 찍었습니다.

Now, a more modern objection to nuclear power

원자력에 반대하는 최근의 논리는

is that it's too slow.

너무 느리다는 겁니다.

It takes too long to build.

짓는 데 너무 오래 걸린다는 거죠.

Well, I'm sure Isodope has something to say about that.

Finally, an argument that isn't older than me.

결국 나보다도 늦게 태어난 반론까지 왔군요.

Unfortunately, it still sucks.

안타깝지만 그것도 구리네요.

In the '70s, France built 45 reactors in 15 years.

70년대에 프랑스는 15년 안에 반응로 마흔다섯 개를 지었어요.

More recently, Japan, China and Korea have built reactors in six years or less.

더 최근에 중국, 일본, 한국은 육 년 안에 반응로를 지었고요.

So this means BTS is blow-drying their hair with clean energy.

BTS는 청정 에너지로 머리를 말리고 있다 이 말이에요.

Even if it takes 10 years to build one,

nuclear power plants can make clean and reliable electricity

원자력은 팔십 년 이상 깨끗하고 안정적인 전기를 만들어요.

for at least 80 years.

This idea that it takes too long to build plants is confusing,

발전소를 짓는 데 너무 오래 걸린다는 지적은 당황스럽습니다.

considering we're going to need energy forever.

You know, the best time to build nuclear plants

was 10 years ago.

The next best time is today.

Now we’ve finally arrived at the most fashionable objection at the moment:

nuclear power is too expensive.

I'm going to take that one.

A little weird to say something is too expensive

to save the future of our species,

but I get it, cost matters.

Here's the thing.

We know how to make clean energy cheaper.

It's not rocket science.

어려운 일이 아닙니다.

You build the same thing over and over and over.

Solar, 10 years ago, was also considered "too expensive,"

but we decided it was cool and invested in it.

Like magic, the costs have dropped by 90 percent.

One way to make nuclear cheaper is with small modular reactors like these.

China just finished building their own version.

Poland will use a similar technology

폴란드도 유사한 기술로

to convert their aging coal plants into nuclear plants.

They'll use the same building, the same transmission lines,

even retrain the same workers.

But now making clean energy

instead of buying dirty fuels from dictators.

독재자들한테 더러운 연료를 사는 대신에 말입니다.

Which leads me to a crazy idea.

What if instead of viewing nuclear power as destructive,

원자력을 파괴적인 걸로 보는 대신

에너지 독립과 평화까지 가져오는 힘으로 보면 어떨까요?

we view it as a force for energy independence

and even peace.

What if this technology offers our best hope for the future?

이 기술이 우리에게 미래를 약속하는 최고의 희망이라면요?

A future where wars aren't funded by our addiction to fossil fuels.

화석 연료 때문에 전쟁 자금을 대는 일이 없는 미래.

A future where energy is clean.

에너지가 깨끗한 미래.

A future where electricity finally makes its way

아직도 전기를 쓰지 못하는 칠억 명에게도

to the 700 million people on Earth

전기가 공급되는 미래.

who still don't have access to it.

원자력이 나쁘다는 생각이 이런 미래를 가로막고 있습니다.

The idea that nuclear power is bad is costing us that future.

이제 버릴 때가 되었습니다.

And it's time to let go of it.
