My favorite part is when the grown-up chases him,

여러 면에서, 이 모습은 아프리카의 젊은이들과 비슷합니다.

looking like he's about to pass out,

trying to save the situation

and get the kid to run in the right direction.

불평등으로 분열된 세계에서 그들은 다른 나라 또래들보다 뒤처져 있죠.

In many ways, that's what it's like for many young people in Africa.

그리고 잘못된 방향으로 달리고 있습니다.

They're many paces behind their peers

왜냐하면 우리가 사회적, 경제적 시스템 건설을 열망하고

on the other side of the inequality divide,

and they're also running in the wrong direction.

Because as much as we might wish otherwise,

and aspire to build economic and social systems

And it's a race that my home country, Nigeria,

and home continent, Africa, are losing.

Inequality must be seen as the global epidemic that it is.

학비를 벌려고 거리 음식을 파느라 수업을 빠지는 어린 소녀에 이르기까지.

From the boy who cannot afford to dream

because of the disappointment that could come with it

분명히 불평등은 세계적으로 여러 문제들의 중심을 차지하며

to the girl that skips school in order to sell snacks in traffic,

40%의 하위 계층뿐 아니라 모두에게 영향을 끼칩니다.

just to fund her school fees.

It is clear that inequality is at the center

평등한 기회를 보장받지 못하는 젊은이들은

of many of the world's problems,

affecting not just the bottom 40 percent of us, but everyone.

좌절하게 됩니다.

때로는 그들이 우리가 원치 않는 선택을 할 수도 있습니다.

Young men and women

자신에게 합당하다고 여기는 바를 얻으려 행동하고

who don't get set on the path of equal opportunities

become frustrated.

더 나은 기회를 가로막는 사람들을 벌주려고 할 수도 있죠.

And we may not like the choices they make

in their attempt to get what they think they rightly deserve

하지만 그 길만 있는 건 아닙니다.

우리 인류는 다른 선택을 할 수 있죠.

or punish those that they assume keep them away

from those better opportunities.

우리에게는 기회의 불평등을 해소할 능력이 있습니다.

But it doesn't have to be this way

그저 불평등 문제를 가장 우선시하면 됩니다.

if we, as humanity, make different choices.

저는 매우 뒤처진 환경에서 성장했습니다.

We have the ability we need to fill that opportunity gap,

저는 아주 똑똑한 아이였지만

제가 자란 아쿠레 지역은 라고스에서 350 km나 떨어져 있었고

but we just have to prioritize it.

I grew up many paces behind.

다른 세상과는 단절된 곳처럼 느껴졌고

Even though I was a smart kid growing up in Akure,

a town 350 kilometers from Lagos,

꿈과 희망과는 거리가 멀었습니다.

it felt like a place that was disconnected from the rest of the world,

하지만 저는 성공하고 싶었습니다.

그리고 고등학교에서 처음 컴퓨터를 본 순간

and one where hope and dreams were limited.

저는 완전히 넋을 잃었죠.

그게 뭔지는 몰라도 꼭 배워야겠다고 생각했습니다.

But I wanted to get ahead,

and when I saw a computer for the first time, in my high school,

그때가 1991년이었고

전교생 500명이 넘는 학교에서 컴퓨터는 단 두 대뿐이었습니다.

I was spellbound,

and I knew I just had to get my hands on whatever it was.

컴퓨터 담당 선생님 말로는

This was in 1991,

컴퓨터는 저 같은 애들을 위한 게 아니라고 하더군요.

and there were only two computers

왜냐하면 저는 그걸 다룰 줄 몰랐으니까요.

for the entire school of more than 500 students.

컴퓨터 사용이 허락된 건 제 친구와, 그의 두 형제뿐이었습니다.

So the teacher in charge said computers were not for people like me,

그 아이들 아버지가 컴퓨터 공학과 교수였기에

because I wouldn't understand how to use them.

이미 컴퓨터를 다룰 줄 알았거든요.

He would only allow my friend and his two brothers,

대학에서는 필사적으로 컴퓨터 근처를 지켰습니다.

sons of a professor of computer science,

to use it, because they already knew what they were doing.

컴퓨터실을 쓰기 위해서 거기서 잠을 잘 정도였죠.

In university, I was so desperate to be around computers

교원 파업이나 학생 시위로 학교가 닫혀도 떠나지 않았습니다.

that to make sure I had access to the computer lab,

I slept there at night,

2002년에 컴퓨터를 선물받기 전까지 제게는 개인 컴퓨터가 없었습니다.

even when the campus was closed due to teachers' strikes

하지만 컴퓨터가 없어도

저는 끈질긴 투지로 극복했습니다.

and student protests.

I didn't own a computer until I was gifted one in 2002,

그런데 컴퓨터실에서 살다시피 하며

but what I lacked in devices, I made up for in drive and determination.

코딩을 독학하는 것이

근본적인 해결책은 아니었습니다.

그래서 저는 패러다임 이니셔티브라는 사회적 기업에서 활동하며

However, camping out in computer labs in order to teach yourself coding

모든 나이지리아 사람들의 기술 습득을 돕고

isn't a systemic solution,

which is why I started Paradigm Initiative,

더 빠르고 멀리 나아가도록 도왔습니다.

그리고 저의 조국을 돕고

to help all Nigerians learn to use technology

to help them run faster and further toward their hopes and dreams,

최대한 단순하게 말하자면

저의 목표는 모든 아프리카 사람들을 ‘페이머스’하게 만드는 것입니다.

and help our nation and take our continent great leaps forward in development.

유명하다는 뜻의 ‘페이머스’가 아니라

You see, to put it as simply as possible,

페이머스 씨처럼 되기를 바란다는 뜻입니다.

my goal is for everyone in Africa to become Famous'.

바로 이 사람입니다.

페이머스 오노쿠레페가 패러다임 이니셔티브에 왔을 때

I don't mean, like, a celebrity,

그는 고등학교를 졸업했지만 대학을 다닐 처지가 아니었습니다.

I mean I want everyone to be like Famous, this guy.

When Famous Onokurefe came to Paradigm Initiative,

he had completed high school, but couldn't afford college,

and his options in life were limited.

When I asked Famous recently

about where he would have been without our training program,

he rolled out a list of could-haves,

including ending up on the streets, jobless and homeless,

2007년 패러다임 이니셔티브에 연이 닿았습니다.

페이머스의 한 친구가 제가 꾸린 교육 프로그램의 청년부에 있었는데

at the risk of doing things he wouldn't be proud of.

But luckily, Famous came to Paradigm Initiative, in 2007,

그가 페이머스에게 무료 컴퓨터 교육 프로그램을 알려주었기 때문입니다.

because his friends, who were part of a youth group I'd told about my plans,

교육 기간 동안

kept talking about a free computer training program.

And during his training,

Famous paid close attention and excelled.

When the United Kingdom Trade and Investment team

at the UK Deputy High Commission in Lagos

페이머스는 인턴으로 일하게 됐고

asked us to recommend a few potential interns,

그곳에서 아부자 영국고등위원회의 입국검사 보조 일을 알게 되었죠.

we recommended Famous and a few others to be interviewed.

He got the internship,

그는 그 일에 지원했습니다. 학사 학위가 없음에도 말이죠.

and while there, he heard about an Entry Clearance Assistant job

아무도 그가 지원했으리라 생각지 않았습니다.

at the [British] High Commission in Abuja.

페이머스는 남들보다 늦게 시작했지만,

He applied, even though, without a college degree,

그의 출세를 도운 것은 기술이 아니었습니다.

no one thought he had a shot.

그것은 추가적인 교육이었으며,

그의 공동체에 기반한 교육,

He was starting behind,

but it wasn't technology that helped him get ahead,

it was the extra training,

and then saved enough to pay his way through university.

Famous, a Medical Biochemistry graduate

세계 4대 회계법인 중 한 곳에서 일하고 있습니다.

from Delta State University,

그곳에서 지난 4년 연속 혁신상을 수상하기도 했죠.

is now a chartered accountant and an assistant manager

with one of the world's Big Four professional services firms,

하지만 분명한 사실은

컴퓨터가 아니라 우리가 해냈다는 사실입니다.

where he has won innovation awards consecutively for the last four years.

우리의 교육과 지원이 더해지지 않았다면

But let's be clear ...

페이머스는 지금의 자리에 있지 못했을 것입니다.

the computer didn't do that -- we did.

공정함이 모든 사람에게 컴퓨터나 특별한 교육을 제공하지는 않지만,

Without our additional training and support,

공정함은 모든 사람에게 동등한 접근 기회를 보장하도록 하고,

Famous wouldn’t be where he is today.

Fairness is not giving everyone a computer and a special program,

사람들이 자기 삶을 향상시키기 위한

fairness is helping make sure everyone has the same access

모든 수단을 이용할 수 있도록 돕습니다.

공정함은 뒤처진 사람에게

and training that can help them make use of all these things

동등한 경쟁의 기회를 주지는 않지만

to improve their lives.

When people are further behind,

fairness isn't giving everyone the same opportunity to compete,

올바른 방향을 향해 경주할 수 있는 기회를 줍니다.

fairness is helping those who are behind

to get to the same starting line with everyone else

하지만 수백만의 젊은이들은

and giving them a chance to run their own race

페이머스나 저처럼 운도 따르지 않고

in the right direction.

이렇다 할 기술도 없습니다.

Yet there are millions of young people

극복 불가능한 불평등의 현실에 맡설 의지는 고사하고 말이죠.

who have not been as fortunate as Famous and I,

가정에서 일하거나 공부해야 할 노동자와 학생이 더 많을수록

who still don't have the skills, let alone the will,

to face similarly insurmountable inequality.

이러한 불평등은 급속도로 확고해지며

As more workers and students

끔찍한 결과를 가져올 것입니다.

now have to complete tasks or learn from home,

제가 패러다임 이니셔티브에서 활동하는 것도 바로 그 때문입니다.

this inequality is exponentially pronounced,

하지만 다른 많은 교육 프로그램들처럼

and with dire consequences.

세 곳뿐인 저희 센터에서 도울 수 있는 젊은이들의 수에는 한계가 있습니다.

This is why I do what I do through Paradigm Initiative.

But just like many intervention programs,

지금 저희가 어린이들 대상으로 실시하는 교육의 경우에는

there's a limit to how many young people we can reach through our three centers.

무척 열악한 공립학교의 시설 때문에

교육 장비를 직접 가져가야 하고

We've now taken the training to where the kids are,

많은 경우에는 전원 공급도 신경써야 하는 처지입니다.

but public schools are so ill-equipped

that we have to bring devices, access,

2007년 이후부터 우리 단체는 나이지리아 젊은이들 대상으로

그들과 가족의 삶을 향상시키기 위해 일하고 있습니다.

and in many cases, we have to provide power supply.

하나 사례를 들자면,

Since 2007, we've worked with young Nigerians

오고추큐 오비와 자매들은 어머니와 함께 집에서 쫓겨났습니다.

in order to improve their lives and that of their families.

아버지가 아들을 더 원했기 때문이죠.

To give just one example,

Ogochukwu Obi father kicked her, her sisters and her mom out,

하지만 그녀가 저희 프로그램을 마치고

직업을 얻어 가장이 되자

아버지가 찾아와

because he preferred to have a son.

딸을 업신여겼던 잘못을 인정했습니다.

But when she completed our program,

got a job and became her family's breadwinner,

교육 센터나 학교에서 하는 일 외에도

her father came calling,

admitting that he was wrong about the worth of the girl.

저희는 이제 찾아가는 교육을 도입할 계획입니다.

전기와 교육용 설비를 갖춘 버스를 마련해서

In addition to our work at our training centers and in schools,

we're now planning to acquire mobile learning units,

여러 학교에서 교육을 제공할 수 있게 됩니다.

busses equipped with access, with devices, and with power,

우리에게는 기술에 대한 접근 기회와

자유로운 인터넷 접근을 가능케 하는 정책과

and that can serve multiple schools.

표현의 자유 등이 필요합니다.

Yes, we need better access to technology

평등한 환경에서는 좋은 컴퓨터를 쓸 기회가 주어지겠지만

and policies that facilitate open internet access,

그들은 컴퓨터를 쓰기는커녕 들어본 적도 없을지 모릅니다.

freedom of expression and more,

but the best computers in the world could fall in a democratic forest,

몇 마일이나 떨어진 곳의 물을 길어 오고

고철을 주우며 학비를 벌지만

but no one would hear them, let alone use them,

if they were miles away, hauling water from a well

그들이 다니는 학교에서는 컴퓨터 기술조차 가르치지 않습니다.

아무리 값비싼 운동화라도

or foraging for scrap metal to pay school fees

한참 뒤처져 있는 선수에겐 별 도움이 안 되겠죠.

in a school that can’t even teach them computer skills.

저는 모교인 고등학교에 초청받아 찾아갔던 일을 절대 잊지 못할 겁니다.

Just like the fanciest sneakers in the world

나이지리아의 정보기술 분야 청년 대사로 활동하던 때였는데요.

can’t help a runner miles behind everyone else.

10년 전 제가 컴퓨터 사용을 거절 당했던 곳이

I'll never forget being invited back to my high school

while I was Nigeria's Information Technology Youth Ambassador.

바로 그 학교였습니다.

그런데 이제는 저를 롤 모델로 소개하더군요.

It was 10 years after I had been denied access to using the computer

마치 그 학교가 지금의 저를 만들어낸듯이요.

in that very same school.

제가 발표를 마치자

But here I was, being introduced as a role model

제게 결코 컴퓨터를 쓸 줄 모를 거라 말했던 그 선생님이

who was supposedly shaped by the same school.

재빨리 마이크를 손에 들고 학생들에게 말했습니다.

After my presentation,

저의 학창 시절을 기억하고 있으며

that teacher, who said I could never understand how to use computers,

제게 잠재력이 있다는 것을 그동안 확신하고 있었다고요.

was quick to grab the microphone

and tell everyone that he remembered me as a student

그 말이 맞았습니다.

그때 그분은 몰랐지만, 저는 알고 있었어요.

and he was sure I had it in me all along.

페이머스도 자기의 잠재력을 알았고,

He was right.

오고추큐도 그랬고,

He didn't know it at the time, but I did have it in me.

40%의 하위계층 사람들도 그렇습니다.

Famous had it in him,

그들에게 인생을 바꿀 기회가 오지 않을 거라고 말할 건가요?

Ogochukwu had it in her,

그 선생님처럼요?

the bottom 40 percent have it in them.

아니면 현실을 인정하실 건가요?

수세기에 걸친 불평등은

Are we going to say that life-changing opportunities

단순히 도구에 의해서가 아니라

are not for people like them, like that teacher said?

기울어진 운동장을 평평하게 해주는 교육과 자원으로 해결된다는 사실이요.

Or are we going to recognize

that centuries of inequality can’t just be solved by gadgets,

공정함은 모든 아이들에게 컴퓨터와 앱을 주는 것이 아닙니다.

but by training and resources that fully level the playing field?

컴퓨터 활용 기회와 교육, 추가적인 지원을 제공함으로써

Fairness is not about giving every child a computer and an app,

컴퓨터와 앱을 활용할 기회를 공평하게 누리도록 하는 것입니다.

fairness is connecting them to access,

그것이 계주의 배턴을 넘겨주는 방법이고,

to training and to additional support,

격차를 좁히고 올바른 방향으로 달리도록 하는 방법이자,

for the need to take equal advantage of those computers and apps.

그들의 인생을 바꾸는 방법입니다.

and help them catch up and start running in the right direction,

and change their lives.
