Wow, wow, people.

반갑습니다, 여러분!

You know, actually, I love people because my work is about people.

저는 사람들을 만나는 것을 좋아하는데 제 작품이 사람에 대한 것이거든요.

It's actually about bringing people together.

사실 사람들을 모이게 만드는 것입니다.

I'm an artist.

저는 예술가입니다, 진짜 일자리를 구하기 전까지 말이죠,

I mean, until I found a real job,

but now it looks like it's getting pretty serious.

그런데 이젠 진짜로 예술가가 돼버린 것 같네요.

But, you know, I also love walls.

저는 벽에도 관심이 많아요.

And I know that walls are supposed to divide us,

벽은 우리를 갈라놓기 위해 존재하죠.

but I think I've found a way

하지만 저는 벽을 화합의 도구로

to use walls to bring us together.

이용해볼 수 있지 않을까 생각했습니다.

And I've tried this in different places.

이 생각을 여러 곳에서 시도해왔습니다.

This was in Israel, Palestine, 15 years ago,

이 사진은 15년 전 이스라엘과 팔레스타인입니다.

where, with my friend Marco,

제 친구인 마르코와 함께

I took photos of Israeli and Palestinian doing the same job

같은 일을 하는 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 사람들을 찍었습니다.

and then pasted them on Israeli city and Palestinian city,

이스라엘과 팔레스타인의 도시에 사진을 전시했는데

and people couldn't even recognize who is who.

사람들은 누가 누군지도 몰랐습니다.

This was in the favelas of Brazil.

이 사진은 브라질 빈민가입니다.

Faces of women on the hills of the community.

여기서는 이 지역에 사는 여성들의 얼굴을 전시했어요.

Often the first target of the violence that is happening there.

저 빈민가에서 발생하는 폭력의 제일 큰 희생자입니다.

This is a local museum we have in Paris, it's called the Louvre.

여긴 파리에 있는 동네 미술관인데 루브르라고 불리는 곳이에요.

I don’t know if you’ve heard about it, but I thought I’d give it a shout out.

들어보셨는지 모르겠는데 꽤 괜찮은 박물관입니다.

And with 400 people and paper and glue,

400명이 모여 종이와 풀로

we wheat-pasted the entire plazas to make the pyramid ten times bigger.

저 피라미드가 열 배 정도는 커 보이게 전체 광장에 붙였어요.

This was at the border between Mexico and US.

이건 미국과 멕시코 사이의 국경이에요.

I just wonder, at his age, what is his perspective on the wall?

이 아이는 벽을 어떻게 볼지 궁금했습니다.

You know, each time I do a project, I wonder: Can art change the world?

저는 작품을 하나 할 때마다 예술이 세상을 바꿀 수 있는지 묻죠.

And I never really know how a projects starts.

저는 작품이 어떤 계기로 시작할지 전혀 모릅니다.

Couple years ago, I was making breakfast

몇 년 전에 아침 식사를 준비하고 있는데

and a friend of mine called me.

사울이라는 친구가 전화를 했어요.

Friend Saul, he says, "JR, you love walls.

“JR, 너는 벽을 좋아하잖아.”

Why don't you do a project in prison?"

“교도소에서 작업해 보는 거 어떄?“

I was like, you know, I was just, "Dude, you know, I would do it,

저는 대답했죠.

“뭐, 좋긴 한데,”

but it's too much paperwork administrative, bureaucracy.

“준비할 서류도 많고, 온갖 절차에 관료주의로 힘들 것 같은데.”

Plus, I've been arrested 15 times, they don't want me in there."

“게다가 난 15번이나 체포되어서 나를 반기지 않을걸.”

And he was like, "I know, bro,

그랬더니 이러더군요.

“아는데, 너는 벽을 보면 뭐든 하고 싶어 하잖아.”

but you love walls so much, what you would do in there.

If you could do it, what could you do?"

“만약 할 수 있다면, 뭘 하고 싶어?”

I was like, "OK, you know what?"

저는 이랬죠. “어, 그래, 그런데...”

I had an idea.

제 머릿 속에는 오로지 삶은 계란하고

If I wanted to finish my poached eggs

and my, you know, French toast before it gets cold,

토스트가 식기 전에 먹으려면

I had to get rid of him.

전화를 끊어야 된다는 생각뿐이었어요.

So I told him, "You know what, I'll paste the entire prison."

“교도소 전체를 벽화로 덮으면 좋겠네.“라고 했죠.

He was like, "Wow, that's amazing."

친구는 “그거 멋진데?“라고 하더군요.

He hung up the phone,

그는 전화를 끊었고 그 친구가 다시 연락을 할 거라 생각하지 않았어요.

I thought I'd never hear from him for two decades.

He called his friend Scott, who was like, "What's up?"

그런데 사울은 자기 친구인 스콧에서 전화를 걸었죠.

Saul is like, “I spoke to JR, he’s down to do a project in prison.”

“JR하고 얘기했는데 교도소에서 작품 활동을 하고 싶대.”

그러니까 스콧은 너무 멋지다며 자기가 주지사한테 연락해보겠다고 했고

Scott's like, "That's amazing, let me call the governor."

Hung up the phone, called the governor.

전화를 끊자마자 주지사에게 연락을 했어요.

주지사는 JR이 도대체 누구냐고 했죠.

Governor was like, "Who's this JR?"

"He does black and white,

“흑백 작업을 하는데,”

and, you know, he takes photos of people, he records their story ..."

“사람들 사진을 찍고 이야기를 기록하죠.”

"I'm sorry, I've never heard of it."

“미안한데, 그런 건 들어본 적이 없네.”

"Yes, there's very large murals."

“아, 아주 커다란 벽화도 있어요.”

And the governor was like, "Wait, wait, wait.

그 말을 듣고 주지사가 “잠깐만!”이라고 하면서

Before I was the governor, I was in a mural.

“내가 주지사가 되기 전에 벽화 작업에 참여한 적이 있네.”

There were 1,300 people,

“천삼백 명이 참여했지.”

each one of them recorded their story, and I was one of them.

“각자의 이야기를 녹취했고 나도 그중 한 사람이었지.”

Is that the same artist?"

“혹시 그 작가님이신가?”

The guy said, "Yes, that's the same artist."

“예, 그 작가가 맞습니다.“

저에게 캘리포니아에 있는 모든 교도소에 갈 수 있도록 허가했어요.

"Give him full clearance for every prison in the state of California."

(웃음과 박수)

(Laughter and applause)

Calls me back.

저한테 다시 전화를 했어요.

Next thing you know, I’m on Google Earth,

저는 구글 어스를 열었습니다.

and there's 35 prisons.

교도소가 서른다섯 곳 있더군요.

I'm looking at them and I'm like, well, first of all, I'm a wallpaper man.

교도소들을 살펴보며 저는 벽화를 그리기 때문에

벽이 깔끔하지 않으면 작업을 할 수 없다고 했어요.

I cannot paste if I don't have my clear surface.

So that doesn't work, that doesn't work, that doesn't work.

여기도 안되고, 저기도 안되고

The yard is made of sand and grass.

운동장은 온통 모래와 풀이어서 할 수 없다고 했어요.

I cannot do it.

I know nothing about prisons.

교도소에 대해 아는 게 전혀 없었고요.

So then I see this one and I'm like, "Wait, can we zoom in this one?"

근데 이 사진을 봤죠.

“잠깐만, 여기를 확대해 볼 수 있을까?”

I'm like, "Oh, actually, you know what?

“여기 가운데 마당은 콘크리트 같은데.”

The yard here in the center looks like it's concrete.

“여기에 작업할 수 있을 거 같아.”

I could work on that."

"Look, JR, that's a supermax security prison."

하지만 거기는 중경비 교도소라며 우려했어요.

It's called Tehachapi,

테하차피라는 교도소인데,

it's actually in the top five of the most violent prisons.

폭력성으로는 다섯 손가락 안에 드는 곳이었어요.

I was like, "That will do it."

저는 괜찮을 거라고 말했고 다음 날 우린 그 교도소로 갔어요.

The next day, we flew there.

We arrived there,

거기에 도착했습니다.

and of course, you know, it's not that easy to get there.

당연히 접근은 쉽지 않았어요.

It's like fences, electric fences, walls.

철조망에 전기 철조망, 담장이 있었죠.

And you add more walls and more people that check your IDs.

담장이 더 있었고 신원을 확인하는 사람들도 끝이 없었어요.

I get all the way to the yard.

마침내 마당에 도착했습니다.

And it looked like some army guy with bulletproof jackets and heavily armed

방탄 조끼를 입고 중무장을 한 군인이 말했죠.

who say, "Alright, this is going to be very simple.

“아주 간단할 겁니다.”

“체육관에서 사람들이 당신을 기다리고 있습니다.”

There's some people waiting for you in a gymnasium.

We gathered some inmates.

“수감자들을 몇 명 모아놨는데”

“그들에게 다가가거나 접촉해선 안됩니다.”

You cannot approach them, you cannot touch them.

You can sit at the chair that we designed for you,

“우리가 설치한 의자에 앉으시면 됩니다.”

and we're going to surround the area of the gymnasium."

“우리가 체육관 주변에서 경계할 것입니다.”

That sounds fun.

재미있을 것처럼 들렸습니다.

I enter the room,

저는 안으로 들어갔고

and we do this thing in France, I don't know if you have that,

여러분은 어떤지 모르겠지만 프랑스에서는 이렇게 인사해요.

but you shake people's hand, you know?

그래도 악수는 하시잖아요?

수감자들에게 악수를 청하고 제 소개를 하고 자기 소개를 청했지요.

So I started shaking people's hands, "Hello, how are you? My name is JR.

What's your name?"

그렇게 자기 소개가 다 끝나고 저는 자리에 앉았어요.

And go around the table, and then I sat.

And I spoke with them.

그리고 사람들과 이야기를 나누었죠.

A lot of them have been there since they were teenagers,

많은 사람들이 십 대 때부터 수감되어 있었습니다.

some of them even from the age of 13.

심지어 어떤 사람은 13살에 수감되었더라고요.

And I've never seen anything like it.

저는 이전엔 이런 광경을 본 적이 없었어요.

And so I told them about my art and about the idea.

저는 그 사람들에게 제 예술과 철학에 대해 말했어요.

And they asked me a question, they said,

그러자 그들이 이렇게 묻더군요.

"But what is the purpose of your art?"

“근데 당신이 예술을 하는 목적은 뭔가요?”

Well, you know, that's a good question.

음, 아주 좋은 질문이네요.

I don't know if I can answer before, you know, trying a project.

어떤 작업을 실행하기 전까진 이 질문에 답하기 어려워요.

So I explained them an idea, and I said, “Wait, before we start anything,

그래서 제 생각을 설명하고는 이렇게 말했어요.

“시작하기에 앞서 여러분이 알아야 할 게 있어요.”

I just want you to know,

if there's anyone here in this room that by being in this project,

“이 방에 있는 사람들 누구든 간에”

“이 작업에 참여하는 게 피해자에게 모욕이 될 것 같으면”

you might offend some of your victims outside,

I'm not your guy.

“여기서 나가주셔야 합니다.”

I'm going to get too much attention for you.

“이 작업으로 여러분은 관심을 아주 많이 받게 될 거예요.”

If I were you, don't participate in this project."

“그런 분들은 이 작업에서 빠져주시면 됩니다.”

Six or seven guys stood up and left the room.

예닐곱 명 정도가 나갔습니다.

I was like, "Alright."

이제 준비가 됐다고 생각했어요.

그들의 사진을 찍기 시작했어요.

So we kept on going and I started photographing them.

Very simple, it's just a small part of the process.

아주 간단한 일이고 전체 작업의 일부분일 뿐이죠.

I'm not really a photographer.

저는 전문 사진 작가가 아니고 사진은 제가 쓰는 한 도구일 뿐입니다.

That’s just one part that I use, and I get to meet them and talk with them.

그들을 이해하기 위해 대화를 나눴습니다.

And each of them started explaining me their story,

그러자 자신들의 이야기를 저에게 들려주기 시작했어요.

where they grew up,

어디서 자랐고 어디에서 왔는지

where they come from,

how many years, some of them spent decades in this prison.

이 감옥에 얼마나 오래 있었는지, 수십 년을 보낸 분도 있었죠.

And the thing is that, I told them, I said,

전 그들에게 말했습니다.

"Look, this photo is nothing.

“사진 찍는 건 시작에 불과해요.”

I need you to go in the next room.

“옆 방으로 이동해 주세요.”

I'm going to leave a mic there.

“그 방에 제가 마이크를 둘 겁니다.”

And I want you to record your story from the beginning.

“여러분의 이야기를 녹음해주시길 바라요.”

“처음부터요.”

I want to understand,

“난 여러분을 알고 싶어요.”

you have to talk like, if you're throwing a bottle in the ocean,

“바다에 편지를 담은 병을 던지듯 허심탄회하게 말씀하시면 됩니다.”

I want to understand where you come from.

“저는 여러분의 이야기가 듣고 싶습니다.”

And then what brought you to make that crime that led you to prison.

“여러분을 감옥으로 오게 만든 범죄의 사연을 알고 싶어요.”

And if you changed, explain how you changed and why."

“이제 여러분이 변했다면 어떻게, 왜 변했는지 알려주세요.”

They all went, some stayed for 10 minutes,

모두 이동했고 어떤 사람은 10분, 누군가는 20분, 30분을 있었습니다.

some stayed for 20, 30 minutes.

Some of them were crying in that place.

누군가는 그 안에서 눈물을 흘리기도 했어요.

Then I went back to my studio and that's what we do.

그 영상을 가지고 제 작업실로 돌아왔어요.

We print strips of paper like a giant puzzle,

종이를 거대한 조각맞추기처럼 조각조각 인쇄해서 하나로 붙였어요.

so we have to combine it together.

It's all just paper and glue.

필요한 건 종이와 풀이 전부였지요.

And then we combine them by numbers,

종이에 번호를 매기고 다시 교도소에 방문했어요.

and then we went back there.

And we started bringing everybody in the yard.

사람들을 전부 마당으로 불러모아서

And we started pasting.

다같이 붙이기 시작했습니다.

Everyone from every gang, every race, participated.

어느 갱단 소속이건 어떤 인종이든 상관하지 않고 모두가 참여했어요.

Now, the thing is,

문제는,

we're still in a supermax security prison.

여기는 여전히 중경비 시설이라는 것입니다.

So the guards were like,

교도관들은 이렇게 말했죠.

"Look, we love you with your paper and stuff,

“이봐요, 당신이 하는 작품을 좋아하긴 하지만”

but we’re going to count everything you brought in,

“당신이 갖고 들어오는 물품은 다 감시 대상이고”

and we’re going to make sure you leave with everything out.

“갖고 들어온 건 전부 빠짐없이 갖고 나가셔야 합니다.“

그래서 시간마다 작업을 중단하고

So every hour we're going to stop this whole project

and make sure there's not one scissors missing,

단 한 개의 가위나 붓 심지어 양동이 같은 것조차

one brush, one, you know, bucket, anything."

없어지지 않았는지 봐야 했어요.

So we went through the process,

저는 이삼일 안으로 작업을 완성할 생각이었죠.

and I had planned two to three days to paste the whole thing.

Those guys were so motivated,

수감자들은 너무나 의욕적이어서

that in literally two or three hours we had done it.

말 그대로 두세 시간 만에 완성해버렸습니다.

So I said, "Wait, stop, guys,

그래서 제가 말했어요. “여러분 잠시만요,”

they're going to bring you back to your cell, give me a second.

“이게 끝나면 다들 다시 감방으로 돌아가잖아요, 잠시 멈춰보세요.”

I'm going to try to get some guards to paste with us."

“제가 교도관들을 좀 불러서 같이 하게 해볼게요.”

And they were like, look, "We love utopianism and stuff,

그러자 수감자들이 말했죠.

“우리도 이상주의 따위를 믿긴 하지만 그건 불가능할 거요.“

but that’s where it stops.”

“알았어요, 잠시만 기다려보세요.”

"No, just give me a second."

교도관들에게 가서 참여하지 않겠느냐고 물었죠.

So I start going to the guards and I say, "Hey, do you mind participating?"

50명이 거절했고 1명이 참여하겠다고 했어요.

Fifty "no," one guy said "yes."

I say, "Cool, come with me.

“좋아요, 같이 가시죠, 수감자들이 알려줄 겁니다.”

They're going to show you."

And then another guard and another guard.

그러자 다른 교도관들도 하나둘 동참하기 시작했어요.

And that's where the real walls were falling down,

바로 그 순간이 진짜 장벽이 허물어지는 순간이었어요.

because there's no communication between those guards and the inmates.

그동안 교도관들과 수감자 사이에 소통이 전혀 없었거든요.

(Applause)

And you know what?

그런데, 여러분,

From the floor, it was so big we couldn't see it anyway.

작품이 너무 커서 지면에서는 볼 수가 없었어요.

You had to send a drone.

드론을 날려야만 했어요.

So remember, again, you're in a supermax security prison.

하지만 말했다시피 여긴 중경비 시설이에요.

It's geofencing.

종이비행기도 안 됩니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So we send in the drone,

아무튼 우린 드론을 띄웠고

those guys have never seen a drone their whole life,

이 수감자들은 드론을 평생 처음 보는 것이어서

they were more excited about the drone than the whole project.

작품보다 드론에 더 들떠있었죠.

(웃음)

And I was so scared because I was like, "I hope we did the puzzle right.

저는 드론을 띄우기 전에 사진들을 잘못 붙여서

혹시 이상하게 보이지 않을까 걱정했어요.

Because if not, it's going to look a bit ugly from up there."

이게 드론으로 촬영한 모습입니다.

And that's what you see from up there.

The whole yard, all their faces.

마당 전체가 수감자들의 얼굴로 꽉 찼어요.

And when you zoom in, actually, you see the picnic table,

확대해서 보면 사실 야외 탁자도 있고요.

you can still see, it looks like a hole, but it's actually an illusion.

구덩이 속에 들어가 있는 것처럼 보이지만 사실은 착시예요.

And you see the guys walking on it.

그 위로 걸어다니는 수감자들도 볼 수 있죠.

Now, the craziest part of all of it

여기서 가장 말도 안 되는 것은

is because of that crazy permit that I had,

제가 받은 허가가 말도 안 되는 것이라서

I literally walked in without being searched.

제가 말그대로 몸수색없이 그곳에 들어갈 수 있었기 때문입니다.

I had my phone on me.

저는 휴대폰을 들고 들어갔습니다.

So I started filming in there and posting it on social media.

그래서 작업하는 내내 SNS에 이 과정을 올렸어요.

So this guy there was showing me his tattoo on day one.

이 사람은 첫날에 문신을 보여줬습니다.

And then the evening, he called his family and they said,

그날 밤 그의 가족들과 통화를 했죠.

"We saw you on JR's Instagram.

“JR의 인스타그램에서 너를 봤어.”

It's incredible, we see what you guys are doing."

“믿기지 않는걸, 너희들 정말 대단하다.“

He was so proud the next day he said,

그는 정말 뿌듯해서 다음 날에 말했죠.

"JR, do you mind me showing my diplomas?"

“JR, 내 졸업장을 볼래요?”

They started realizing the impact of suddenly having a connection

수감자들이 외부와 갑자기 연결된 효과를 느끼기 시작한 거죠.

with the outside.

Then this guy showed up.

그리고 또 다른 사람이 나타났는데 이 사람의 이름은 케빈이에요.

His name is Kevin.

You know, when I saw him, I was like, "Whoa."

이 사람을 처음 보곤 놀랐어요.

In my life, I'll never have a second chance to ask a guy, hopefully,

저는 앞으로 누군가에게 왜 얼굴에 나치 문양을 새겼는지

why he has a fucking swastika on his face.

물어볼 일이 없길 바라요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And so I ask him, and he was like, "Oh, this?"

이유를 물었더니 이 사람은 “아, 이거요?”라며

Almost like he forgot about it.

거의 잊어버리고 있었던 것 같더군요.

He was like, "I did this as a gang thing when I went in prison.

“제가 감옥에 있을 때 갱단 표시로 한 거예요.”

“하지만 이제는 할 수 있다면 지워버리고 싶어요.“

But now, if I could, I would remove it."

I was like, "OK, do you mind if I take a photo and I share it?"

“혹시 사진을 찍어서 SNS에 올려도 괜찮을까요?”

그는 흔쾌히 승낙했고 저는 그 사진을 올렸습니다.

He's like, "Yeah, sure."

I share that photo.

Now, as you can imagine, on social media,

예상하시는 대로 SNS는 난리가 났어요.

a lot of people were as shocked and offended as I was.

제가 그랬던 것처럼 사람들은 불쾌해했어요.

But a lot of people were like, “That’s strange,

그런데 많은 사람들은 사진 속 수감자의 모습을 보고

because that doesn't connect with the beauty in his eyes

그의 눈동자에 깃든 아름다움과 인간미가

and the humanity in him."

나치 문양과 어울리지 않는다고 말했죠.

So I went back to him and I said, "Look, Kevin,

저는 교도소에 돌아가서 케빈에게 말했어요.

there's this thing called social media.

“이게 SNS라는 건데요,”

I know you've been here too long and you don't know about this,

“당신은 수감 생활을 오래 해서 이제 뭔지 잘 모르시겠죠.”

“여기에 사람들이 댓글을 남겨요. 제가 하나씩 읽어드릴게요.”

but people are writing comments, I'm going to read them to you.

“이 중 몇몇에는 당신이 답을 해줘야할 것 같아요.”

And I think some of them you should answer.

우린 대화를 시작했고 저는 영상을 많이 찍었어요.

So we started talking, and I did many and many videos

and asking him again and again, and he responded

그에게 수많은 질문을 했고 그는 다 대답해줬어요.

and he went deeper and deeper.

그는 점점 더 깊이 있는 대답을 하기 시작했어요.

And it started a chain of people who were like,

그리곤 이렇게 말하는 사람들이 나타났죠.

"Let's get this tattoo out of his face."

“저 나치 문양을 그의 얼굴에서 제거해줍시다.“

So now before we revealed the image that you saw,

사실 여러분께 보여드린 사진들을 공개하기 전까지

I didn't want to throw it to the world like that.

이런 방식으로 세상에 공개하고 싶지 않았어요.

For now, only the inmates and I have seen it.

지금은 수감자들과 저만 봤습니다.

We started an app where you can actually go in,

여러분이 들어가서 볼 수 있는 앱을 만들었습니다.

it's totally free,

완전 무료예요.

and you can go and click on any face and hear their story

들어가서 얼굴을 누르면 그들의 이야기를 들을 수 있어요.

for as much as they want.

그들이 알려주고 싶은 만큼만요.

I wonder, you know, I've seen it.

정말 궁금했습니다.

I saw people telling me that they heard story, and like a podcast.

종종 사람들이 수감자들의 이야기를 팟캐스트처럼 들었다고 말해줘요.

But I wonder, how would they feel about it?

하지만 정말 궁금한 건 그들이 뭘 느꼈는지였어요.

You know, I wanted the feedback from them.

저는 그들의 반응이 궁금했어요.

So I got a permit to go back into prison.

그래서 방문 허가를 다시 받았죠.

And this time I said, let me work on some more walls, I'll find an idea.

이번엔 다른 벽에 작업할 거고 생각이 있다고 말했죠.

So I go back in there and I started working on the walls,

저는 돌아가서 벽에 작업을 하기 시작했는데

but it was really, the excuse was like, I need to speak to you guys.

하지만 수감자들과 이야기를 하는 게 진짜 이유였지요.

So I said, "What happened, guys?"

어떻게 지냈냐고 물어봤고 그들은 무슨 말이냐고 되물었어요.

They were like, "Well, what do you mean, what happened?"

그래서 밖에 있는 동안 그들과 대화를 할 수 없어서

I was like, "I was on the outside, I couldn't speak to you guys.

그들의 삶이 어떻게 변했는지 궁금하다고 했어요.

What was the impact inside?"

“영향은 아주 명확헤요.”

"Oh, the impact inside is pretty simple.

“제 딸은 저를 14년간 한 번도 보러오지 않았어요.”

Let me tell you for myself, I mean, my daughter never visited me in 14 years.

And now she sat in her bedroom, and she listened to my audio,

“이제 그 애는 자기 방에서 내 이야기에 귀를 기울여요.”

and now she sees me every week.”

He says, "You can ask whoever you want of those guys here,

and they'll tell you the same story."

“다들 나랑 비슷한 경험을 했어요.”

And he told me another thing happened.

또 한 가지 변화가 더 있었습니다.

"Is that the guards started listening to our stories.

이들의 이야기를 들어본 교도관들이

They treat us differently now."

수감자들을 다르게 대하기 시작했다는 겁니다.

Then we started seeing the walls falling down.

우린 장벽이 허물어지는 걸 느꼈어요.

So I left a little souvenir in the courtyard.

저는 마당에 작은 기념물을 남겼습니다.

I was like, "Let me make one more wall disappear before I go."

떠나기 전에 벽 하나를 더 허물고 싶었거든요.

So we pasted the mountains from behind the wall on the wall.

그래서 벽 너머에 있는 산을 교도소 담장에 그렸어요.

And it's still there, actually.

저 벽화는 아직 있습니다.

This one is still in level four, which is the supermax security prison.

저 교도소는 여전히 경비가 매우 삼엄한 중경비 시설입니다.

And they told me in winter it becomes all snowy.

겨울이 되면 눈이 많이 내린다고 하더군요.

And so you actually don't tell the difference

그래서 실제와 벽을 분간하기 어렵다고 합니다.

between the reality and the wall.

Now, Kevin was still in prison,

케빈은 여전히 교도소에 있었고 저는 그를 보러 또 갔어요.

so I visited him again.

And something had changed in him.

그의 내면에 뭔가 변화가 있었습니다.

He was already helping others,

그는 다른 사람들을 돕고 있었어요.

and, you know, you could tell that he almost had forgotten about his tattoo,

이젠 과거의 그의 모습은 찾아볼 수 없을 것 같았죠.

even if it was still there,

교도소에선 문신을 지울 수 없어서 나치 문양이 남아있을지라도요.

because you cannot remove tattoos in prison.

So I bought him a book,

저는 케빈에게 책을 한 권 선물했어요.

and I told him, "Look, there's a swastika on the cover,

“책 표지에 나치 문양이 보이죠? 좋아할 것 같아서 사왔어요.”

I thought you would like it."

And he laughed.

그는 웃었습니다.

But I said, "No, seriously, this is our friend,

“농담 아니에요, 제 친구인 아트 슈피겔만이 쓴 책인데”

Art Spiegelman, who wrote it,

and he told the story about his family in the Holocaust."

“그의 가족이 나치 대학살을 겪은 이야기예요.”

And so that night he went and read the book.

그날 밤 그는 그 책을 읽었어요.

And he was really moved.

그는 완전히 감동을 받았죠.

He called his mom and he said,

케빈은 어머니께 전화해서

"Mom, those French people brought me this book that talks about the Holocaust."

프랑스 사람들이 나치 대학살에 관련된 책을 가져왔다고 했어요.

And she said, "But you stupid moron.

그러자 어머니께서 “이 바보야,”

Your family was from Poland.

“우린 폴란드 출신이고 유대인들을 숨겨주고 있었어.”

They were hiding Jews.

They died in Auschwitz because of protecting them.

“그들을 보호하다가 많은 이들이 아우슈비츠에서 죽었단다.”

And you go in prison and do this on your face?"

“그런데 네가 교도소에 가서 얼굴에 나치 문양을 새긴다고?”

He was in shock.

그는 충격을 받았습니다.

Couple years later, which is a couple months ago,

몇 년 뒤, 몇 달 전인데

he came out.

그는 출소했어요.

Like many others from the project,

이 작품에 참여한 사람들은

almost all of them got moved to a lower-security prison,

대부분 경비가 완화된 교도소로 옮겨갔어요.

and one third of them got freed because of having good grades

그중 삼분의 일은 석방되었는데

작업 이후 교도관들이 준 좋은 평가와 점수 덕이었습니다.

and notes by the guards after the project.

So Kevin went out, and the first thing he did

케빈도 출소했고 케빈이 나와서 한 첫 번째 일은

was to go up that hill that he looked at for 17 years,

교도소에서 17년 동안 봤던 언덕에 올라가서

to look down at the prison that he was staying in.

그가 지냈던 교도소를 내려다 보는 것이었어요.

And then the second thing, as I promised him,

그리고 두 번째는 제가 약속한 대로

I took him to a doctor to remove his tattoo.

저랑 같이 의사를 찾아가서 문신을 지우는 것이었어요.

And the session started with the laser, and it's very painful.

문신 제거 시술은 레이저로 하는데 매우 아파요.

And at the end of it, the doctor removed the laser and she told him,

나치 문양을 다 지우고 나서 의사는 이렇게 말했어요.

"Well, who's better than a Jewish doctor to remove your swastika?"

“나치 문양을 지우는 데 누가 유대인 의사보다 더 잘하겠어요?“

(Laughter and applause)

And that's him now.

그리고 이게 현재 모습이에요.

You know, we really tried to bring him here.

케빈과 함께 오려고 했는데 뜻대로 되진 않았습니다.

But his parole officer, who is actually really nice,

그의 가석방 담당자는 아주 좋은 분이지만 이렇게 말했죠.

he said "JR, you're pushing too much.

“JR씨, 그건 무리예요. 케빈은 캐나다로 갈 수 없어요.”

He's not going to Canada.

Sorry about this.”

“유감이에요.“

But he knows I'm here talking about it.

하지만 케빈은 제가 여기서 그의 이야기를 하는 걸 알아요.

You know, I want to use art as a bridge

저는 예술을 사람들이 소통하도록 연결하는 다리로 쓰고 싶어요.

to make people talk to each other.

I'm not an activist, I'm just an artist.

저는 운동가가 아니고 그냥 예술가예요.

I don't try to tell people what to think.

사람들에게 어떤 생각을 하도록 주입하는 게 아니에요.

I just try to make them think.

그냥 사람들이 생각하도록 만들고 싶어요.

And I really see art,

저는 예술이 작품을 만드는 과정에 다 녹아있다고 생각해요.

to me, it's like, it's in the process.

That's what's important.

이게 중요한 거예요.

And after this whole project, after everything I showed you,

제가 지금 보여드린 저 작품이 다 끝난 다음

what shook them, what struck them the most,

가장 감명받은 것이 무엇인지 수감자들에게 물었더니

is that I shook their hand.

제가 그들과 악수했던 그 순간이라고 했어요.

So at the end, they even asked me for a hug.

마지막엔 서로 포옹까지 했어요.

Now I remember their first question, which was:

이제 그들의 첫 번째 질문을 떠올려요.

What is the purpose of your art?

제 예술의 목적이 무엇인가요?

Well, art can change things, but can it change the world?

예술은 뭔가를 변화시킬 수 있는데 세상을 바꿀 수도 있을까요?

Or can it change a man?

혹은 한 사람을 변화시킬 수 있을까요?

Before you answer that question,

이 질문에 답하기 전에

think, at some point in your life, have you changed?

살면서 어떤 순간에 자신의 삶이 변한 적이 있는지 생각해 보세요.

And if yes, if you did,

만약 여러분이 그런 경험이 있다면 저들도 마찬가지 아닐까요?

why can't they?

You also just got back from Ukraine,

우크라이나에서 방금 돌아오셨는데

and I wanted to show us just another piece of your work.

괜찮다면 작품을 하나 더 보여드리고 싶네요.

JR: Oh yeah, that was in Ukraine.

JR: 맞아요. 저긴 우크라이나예요.

The biggest city in the west side of Ukraine is called Lviv.

우크라이나의 서부에서 가장 큰 엘비프라는 도시예요.

And a friend of mine took that photo at the border,

제 친구가 국경에서 저 사진을 찍었어요.

he sent it to me, I printed it 150 feet long.

그걸 저에게 보내줬고 저는 45미터 크기로 인쇄했지요.

We rolled it as a tarp, walked through the border with it.

우리는 저걸 방수포로 싸서 국경을 통과했어요.

It's actually easy to go that way, you know, to enter Ukraine.

사실 우크라이나에 들어가는 건 쉬웠어요.

So they were like, "Oh, you're going to go this way? Sure."

사람들이 친절하게 이끌어줬거든요.

And then we drove to, you know, I met some people on Instagram,

한번은 인스타그램으로 사람들에게 도움을 요청했더니

and they came and picked me up in their car.

저를 차에 태워 주기도 했고요.

And then we gathered hundreds of people.

저희는 사람들을 수백 명 모았어요.

We wanted to show Putin's planes who they were shooting out.

푸틴이 보낸 비행기에 지금 누구를 쏘고 있는지 보여주고 싶었거든요.

That little girl is actually safe.

저 소녀는 다행히 안전한 상태예요.

When she got photographed, she was coming out of the country.

저 사진을 찍었을 당시 저 아이는 국경을 빠져나오고 있었어요.

So she’s now in Warsaw, and she’s OK.

현재 저 아이는 바르샤바에 있고 안전합니다.

And since then, actually,

그 이후로 저 사진은 유럽 곳곳을 돌아다니고 있어요.

we're moving this image all around Europe.

So while TED was happening in the last four days,

TED 행사가 진행되는 지난 나흘 동안

the image was in Berlin, Dusseldorf, Venice this morning.

저 사진은 베를린과 뒤셀도르프를 거쳐 지금은 베니스에 있어요.

And then it will keep traveling and each time, each place,

앞으로 계속 돌아다닐 것입니다.

people are gathering by themselves and opening it up.
