What would make me quit my job during the pandemic?

In May 2020, protests broke out across the United States.

George Floyd, a Minnesota man,

was killed by a couple of police officers on camera

경찰관 몇몇에 의해 죽는 것이 방영되었어요.

and hundreds of thousands of Americans had had enough.

수십 만의 미국인들이 겪을 만큼 겪은 일이었어요.

Like so many others, I watched the protests on the news.

다른 많은 사람들처럼 저도 뉴스에서 시위를 보았어요.

I watched as the crowd moved from downtown Atlanta to Buckhead,

군중들이 애틀란타 시내에서 벅헤드로 오는 것을 보았죠.

where I live.

The protesters were right outside of my house,

so in true millennial fashion,

I took out my phone so I could record it and post it to Twitter.

After logging the events, I called my parents,

and as I was talking to my snook, which is what I call my mom,

I began to get a little worried.

The energy of the crowd was growing

군중들의 기세가 점점 커졌거든요.

and snook told me, "Don't worry, baby,

when people feel that their voices aren't heard,

That statement hit me hard because, why weren't people being heard?

사람들의 말이 받아들여지지 않기 떄문에 그 말이 충격이었습니다.

I mean, if we're all watching the same thing,

우리 모두 이 상황을 보고 있다면

then why aren't we all upset?

왜 모든 사람이 화내지 않는 걸까?

And how could I help make a difference?

내가 어떻게 변화를 줄 수 있을까?

No, better yet, how could I make it felt?

아니 더 나아가서, 내가 어떻게 영향을 미칠 수 있을까?

That was the moment I began to think about opting out ...

그게 제가 탈퇴에 대해 생각한 순간이었어요.

opting out of a career I dreamed of my entire life.

제가 평생 꿈꿔온 경력을 그만두는 것이지요.

저는 WNBA에서 2009년부터 뛰어왔어요.

I've been playing in the WNBA since 2009,

most recently as a guard for the Atlanta Dream.

최근에는 애틀란타 드림팀에서 수비수로 뛰었죠.

Basketball has been one of the biggest parts of my life,

농구는 제 인생의 가장 큰 부분이었지만

and yet I decided to give it up,

그럼에도 그걸 그만두기로 했어요.

trying to focus on changing the world for the better.

세계를 더 나은 곳으로 바꾸는 데에 집중하기 위해서요.

I wanted to make it felt.

저는 와닿게 하고 싶었습니다.

Some people thought I was crazy, but honestly, most people got it,

몇몇 사람들은 제가 미쳤다고 생각했지만 솔직히 말해서 대다수 사람들은 이해했어요.

and even though I was filled with fear,

저는 두려움에 휩싸였지만

I took that leap of faith and did it anyway.

엄청난 믿음의 도약으로 어쨌든 탈퇴했어요.

I opted out not knowing how I was going to pay my bills.

저는 어떻게 고지서를 낼 지도 모른 채 팀에서 탈퇴했어요.

if I would ever be a professional WNBA player again.

다시 WNBA 선수가 될 수 있을지도 모른 채로요.

I opted out of my comfort zone,

저는 제 안전 지대에서 벗어났고

and in doing so, I truly opted in.

그럼으로써 정말로 하게 되었어요.

I gained a completely different perspective

저는 완전히 다른 시각을 얻었고

and the confidence that comes with turning moments into momentum.

순간을 계기로 바꾸는 자신감을 얻었어요.

The next day I threw a Juneteenth event,

다음 날 저는 준틴스 이벤트를 열었어요.

and Juneteenth is a day to commemorate the official end of slavery.

준틴스는 공식적인 노예 해방을 기념하는 날이에요.

At the event, people were telling me they heard my story,

이벤트에서 사람들은 저에게 제 이야기를 들었다고 말해주었어요.

they were coming up to me like, "Yo, you opted out! That's so dope!"

저에게 다가와서 “탈퇴했다면서요! 정말 멋져요!” 하고 말했죠.

But then they began to vent to me,

그리곤 털어놓기 시작했어요.

telling me about uncles pulled over for no reason,

이유 없이 도로 가에 차를 세워야 했던 삼촌들 이야기,

cousins killed by the police.

경찰관에게 죽은 사촌들 이야기 같은 거요.

They wanted me to know their stories so I could represent their voices,

사람들은 제가 그들의 이야기를 듣고 그들의 목소리를 대표해주길 바랐어요.

and in that moment,

그 순간,

I felt so connected with helping them.

저는 그들을 도우면서 우리가 정말 연대하고 있다고 느꼈어요.

They felt that I was the person that could make their stories felt,

그들은 저를 그들의 이야기가 영향력 있게 해주는 사람이라고 느꼈고요.

and honestly,

솔직히 말하자면

I was committed to doing whatever I needed to make that happen.

저는 그렇게 될 수 있다면 무엇이든 하겠다고 맹세했어요.

I don't know how to cure racism, fix police brutality

저는 인종차별을 없애는 법이나 경찰의 무자비함을 고치는 법,

or any of the other problems plaguing America.

미국을 괴롭히는 다른 문제들을 해결하는 법은 몰라요.

어떤 사람도 그걸 할 순 없을 거얘요.

No one person can do that.

But we all can do what we can to make it felt.

하지만 우리 모두는 어떤 영향을 미칠 수 있어요.

Making it felt for me is an action.

제가 영향을 미치는 건 행동이었어요.

It's not just protesting and raising your voice,

시위나 목소리를 높이는 것만이 아니에요.

but also doing something to show your intention.

여러분의 관심을 드러내는 행동을 하는 거예요.

I opted out and now you feel me.

저는 그만두었고, 이제 여러분은 느끼죠.

Honestly, that was a big move for me,

솔직히 그건 제게 정말 큰 일이었어요.

but now that I've done it,

하지만 그걸 해냈고

it feels like it was almost inevitable.

이제 그건 불가피한 일이었던 것처럼 느껴져요.

와닿게 하는 일이 부정적일 수도 있어요.

And while making it felt can have a negative connotation

of violence and trouble,

폭력이나 문제를 일으키는 것으로요.

I wanted to show that it could also have a really positive form.

저는 정말 긍정적인 모습도 있음을 보여주고 싶어요.

Playing in the WNBA has afforded me a platform,

WNBA에서 뛴 것이 저를 연단 위에 올렸고

and with that platform, I want to create positive change.

저는 연단 위에서 긍정적인 변화를 만들고 싶어요.

So big picture,

큰 그림으로 보자면

I want to level the playing field

저는 경기장을 평평하게 해서

so that everyone has access to the same opportunities,

모두 같은 기회를 얻을 수 있게 하고 싶어요.

regardless of race.

To do this I know I need to increase exposure

그러기 위해 저는 더 나서서야 한다는 걸 알아요.

to the young Black and brown youth,

젊은 흑인들 앞에요.

showing them explosive fields like tech

그들에게 테크 같은 폭발적인 성장 분야를 보여줄 거예요.

and creating ways for them to develop those skills

그들이 기술을 익힐 수 있는 방법도 만들어서

so they can seize the opportunities.

기회를 잡을 수 있게 할 거예요.

We're creating a workshop

우리는 워크샵을 기획하고 있어요.

and partnering with organizations already doing the work,

이미 일하고 있는 기관들과 제휴도 맺고요.

taking small steps now

조금씩 나아가다 보면

that I know will have a big impact in the future.

미래에 큰 영향을 줄 거라는 걸 알아요.

A lot of times we underestimate what we can do --

많은 경우에 우리가 할 수 있는 것을 과소평가해요.

the effect we can have.

우리가 미칠 수 있는 영향도요.

Imagine if we all started to think about "How can I make it felt?"

우리가 모두 “어떻게 영향을 미칠까?”를 고민하기 시작한다고 상상해보세요.

If we all took that leap of faith to stand for what we believe is right,

만약 모두 옳다고 생각하는 것을 위해 싸우는 믿음의 도약을 가진다면 어떨까요?

regardless of the very real fear embedded in that decision,

그 결심으로 인한 엄청난 공포에도 불구하고 말이에요.

I think we would then start to fulfill the title of the United States of America

저는 우리가 미합중국이라는 이름을 충족시키기 시작할 거라 생각해요.

instead of the divided states that we're seeing right now.

우리가 지금 보고 있는 분열된 여러 주들 대신이요.

I know from basketball that all it takes is a single moment,

농구에서 보면 한 순간, 일 초가

a second, to change everything.

모든 걸 바꾸곤 하죠.

So let's choose to turn our moments into momentum.
