In this lesson we’re looking at causative verbs.

En aquesta lliçó mirarem els verbs causatius.

So what are causative verbs?

Així doncs. Què són els verbs causatius?

Well, sometimes things just happen.

Bé, De tant en tant algunes coses simplement passen.

And sometimes other people or things make them happen.

O altres persones o coses fan que passin.

They cause them to happen.

Causen que passi.

When we want to talk about that, we use causative verbs.

Quan volem parlar sobre això, usam verbs causatius.

So they’re verbs about causing things and there are lots of them.

Així que són verbs sobre coses que causen coses i n'hi ha un bon grap.

They’re a bit unusual, so we’ll fix some common mistakes.

Let’s start with most common verb.

Make.

One of the meanings of make is cause.

Un dels significats del verb "Make" és "causar"

For example, cold temperatures make water freeze.

Per exemple, les temperatures fredes fan que l'aigua se geli

Hot air makes balloons rise.

L'aire calent fa que els globus flotin.

One thing causes another.

Una cosa "causa" l'altra.

It makes it happen.

La fa ocòrrer.

Jay, do these jeans make my bum look big?

Jay. Aquests calçons fan(make) que se'm vegi la panxa grossa?

We often use ‘make’ with adjectives to say what causes a feeling or state.

Sovint empram "make" amb adjectius per dir què causa un sentiment o estat.

For example, heights make me dizzy.

Per exemple, les alçades me fan(make) estar maretjat.

Spiders make me nervous.

Les aranyes me fan(make) estar nirviós/a.

What’s this?

Què és això?

It’s marmite.

és llevat.

It’s good for you.

És bo per tu.

It makes you strong and healthy.

Te fa(make) fort i sà.

But it tastes terrible.

però el gust és terrible.

No, it doesn’t.

No, no ho és.

So the effect of eating marmite is you get stronger and healthier.

Així que l'efecte de menjar llevat és que et fa més fort i més sà.

We also use make to talk about forcing or requiring people to do things.

També empram "make" per parlar de forçar o demanar altres que facin coses.

Jay this kitchen's a mess.

Jay, aquesta cuina és un desastre.

We need to clean it up before Graham and Carole come.

Necessitam netetjat-la abans que Graham i Carole vinguin.

She always makes me clean up before guests come.

Ella sempre me fa(make) fer néts els plats abans que els convidats vinguin.

You’re not going to make me do anything stupid, are you?

No em faràs(Make) fer res estúpid, oi?

Oh no.

So 'make' can mean cause, force or require.

Així que "make" pot significar "causa, forçament o sol·licitud.

Let’s look at another causative verb - have.

Mirem un altre verb causatiu. "Have"

I love taking Carter out for his walk, but I’m not always home.

M'encanta treure Carter a passetjar. Però no sempre sóc a ca meva.

When I’m not here, I have the dog walker take him out.

Can you work out what 'have' means?

Pots desxifrar què significa "have"?

When we have someone do something, we make arrangements for them to do it.

Quan fem que(have) algú faci quelcom, fem acords amb ells perquè les facin.

We don’t force them, but we give them the responsibility to do it.

No els forçam, sinò que els donam la responsabilitat de fer-ho

Perhaps we employ them and we can instruct them to do it.

Potser els contractam i podem donar-los instruccions per fer-ho.

The elevator's broken down.

L''ascensor està romput

I had to climb up ten flights of stairs.

He hagut d'escalar deu vols d'escales.

OK, now we’re going to look at one more verb - let.

D'acord, ara ficarem una ullada a un altre verb, "Let".

It has a very different meaning to make and have.

Té un sentit molt diferent al de "make" i "have".

See if you can work out what it is.

'Let' means allow or permit.

"Let" significa "allow or permit" (Permetre, deixar)

So when we make people do things, it’s often things they don’t want to do.

Així quan fem que(have) les persones facin coses, són sovint coses que no volen fer.

But when we let people do things, it’s generally things they want to do.

Però quan deixam, permitim(let) que les persones facin coses, generalment són coses que volen fer.

What time do your parents make you go to bed?

A quina hora els teus pares te fan(make) anar al llit?

At 10 o’clock.

A les 10 en punt.

Is that a bit early for you?

We use 'make' when we require people to do things they don’t want to do, and 'let'

when we allow them to do things they do want to do, and we use ‘have’ when we arrange

for people to do things.

And that’s it!

Now you know the meanings of the three most common causative verbs.
