Welcome back to part two of our video on causative verbs.

This week we’re going to look at some grammar and fix some common mistakes.

Aquesta setmana mirarem un poc de gramàtica i arreglarem errors comuns.

There are lots of causative verbs and 'make', 'let' and 'have' are the most common ones.

Hi ha molts verbs causals i "make" "let" i "have" són els més comuns.

They’re all irregular so it’s make, made, made, let, let, let and have, had, had.

Tots ells són irregulars. Així que és "make, made, made. Let, let, let i Have, had, had.

Easy, huh?

The tricky thing is the pattern they follow when they’re causative verbs, and it’s

There’s the causative verb, then the person who does the action, and then the action.

Let’s see an example.

What does your dad do if the room is a mess - if your bedroom is a mess?

Què fa ton pare si la cambra és un desastre, si la teva habitació ho és?

He makes me sort out my clothes and put them away.

Ell em fa recogir(Sort out) la meva roba i col·locar-la (put away)

'Sort out' and 'put away' are phrasal verbs.

"Sort out" i "Put away" són phrasal verbs.

Sort out means organize and tidy and when we put things away we put them in the place

"Sort out" significa organitzar i fer net i quan we put things away(ordenam les nostres coses) les posam al seu lloc.

they’re kept.

Són guardades.

He makes me sort out my clothes and put them away.

Ell em fa organitzar la meva roba i col·locar-la.

Notice the structure here.

There’s the causative verb, then the person who does the action, and then the action.

Hi ha el verb causal, després la persona que duu a terme l'acció i llavors l'acció.

It’s the same with the verb 'let'.

Passa el mateix amb el verb "let"

Do your parents let you eat ice cream for breakfast?

Et deixen(let) els teus pares menjar gelat per esmorçar?

Well actually, unfortunately, no.

Bé... de fet... desafortunadament, no.

No.

No.

But they let me eat pancakes.

Però em deixen(let) menjar creps americanes.

Oh well they’re very nice, aren’t they?

Oh bé, són molt bones, oi?

And some maple syrup.

i un poc de sirop.

So make and let follow the same structure.

Així que "make" i "let" segueixen la mateixa estructura.

Causative verb, person action.

Verbs causals, persona acció.

Now here’s the thing.

Aquí hi ha la qüestió.

Suppose we change the verbs ‘make’ and ‘let’ to the verbs 'force' and 'allow'.

Suposeu que canviam els verbs "make" i "let" pels verbs "force" i "allow.

They’re causative verbs too.

Són verbs causals també.

If we use them instead the meaning stays the same, but look what happens to the structure.

Si els empram en el seu lloc el significat roman idèntic, però mira què passa a l'estructura.

There’s a ‘to’ there.

Hi ha un "to"

After make and let, we don’t say ‘to’.

No s'empra el "tot" després de "make" o "let".

That’s strange.

És estrany.

After most verbs we put ‘to’, but not with make and let.

Al darrere de molts de verbs solem posar "to" però no ho fem amb "make" i "let"

And it’s the same with the causative verb 'have'.

I passa el mateix amb el verb causal "have"

Sometimes I walk Carter myself and sometimes I have the dog walker take him out

De vegades passeig en Carter jo mateix i de vegades faig que (have) el passetjador de cans el passetgi.

We could also say 'get' here.

També hi podríem dir "get".

Get is another causative verb and it means the same thing as have, but the pattern is

"Get" és un altre verb causal i significa el mateix que "have" però el patró és

different.

Sometimes I get the dog walker to take Carter out.

De vegades faig que(Get) el passetjador de cans en tregui en Carter.

In structures with 'get', we say to.

En estructures amb "get" empram "to".

The elevator's broken down.

L'ascensor està averiat.

I had to climb up ten flights of stairs.

He hagut d'escalar deu pisos d'escales.

Oh dear.

Oh, estimat...

Oh.

Oh...

Hello? Vicki, I’ve got a package for you, but the

Hola? Vicki, Tinc un paquet per tu, però

elevator's broken down.

l'ascensor està averiat.

Yeah, I've just heard.

Don’t worry.

I’ll have Jay carry it up.

It’s quite heavy.

I’ll get him to come and collect it now.

So remember, 'make' 'let' and 'have' - we don’t say ‘to’.

Així que recorda amb, "make", "let", i "have" no empram "to"

That’s the first tricky thing.

Aquesta és la primera qüestió complicada.

Now the next tricky thing.

What about the past tense?

If something happened in the past, which verb is going to take the tense?

We’ll watch a story and then I’ll ask you some questions about it.

OK, I’ve got two questions for you.

So which verb took the past tense?

The causative verb.

The other verb doesn’t change.

Let’s have another example.

Someone’s at the door.

Can you make Carter go to his crate?

Pots fer que(make) en Carter vagi a la seva gàbia?

Sure.

Good boy.

Have they gone?

Yes, you can let him out now.

So first we made Carter go to his crate and then we let him come out.

It’s the causative verb that takes the tense.

És el verb causal el que és determinat pel temps.

Now there’s just one other thing you should know.

It’s about the causative verbs ‘have’ and ‘get’.

We often use them in the passive, so we talk about having things done and getting things
