English Causative Verbs - MAKE, LET, HAVE and more. Part Two

Welcome back to part two of our video on causative verbs.

Last week we looked at the meanings of three common causative verbs.

This week we’re going to look at some grammar and fix some common mistakes.

Cette semaine, nous allons examiner la grammaire et corriger quelques erreurs courantes.

There are lots of causative verbs and 'make', 'let' and 'have' are the most common ones.

Il y a beaucoup de verbes causatifs et « make », « Let » et « have » sont les plus courantes.

They’re all irregular so it’s make, made, made, let, let, let and have, had, had.

Ils sont tous irréguliers donc c'est "make, made, made", "let, let, let" et "have, had. had"

Easy, huh?

Facile, hein ?

The tricky thing is the pattern they follow when they’re causative verbs, and it’s

this.

et c'est cela.

There’s the causative verb, then the person who does the action, and then the action.

Il y a le verbe causatif, la personne qui fait l'action, et l'action.

Let’s see an example.

Voyons un exemple.

What does your dad do if the room is a mess - if your bedroom is a mess?

Que fait ton père si la pièce est en désordre - si ta chambre est en désordre ?

He makes me sort out my clothes and put them away.

Il me fait trier mes vêtements et les ranger.

'Sort out' and 'put away' are phrasal verbs.

« Sort out » et « put away » sont des phrasal verbes .

Sort out means organize and tidy and when we put things away we put them in the place

"Sort out" signifie organiser et ranger et quand nous " put away" des choses nous les rangeons à leurs places.

they’re kept.

ils sont conservés.

He makes me sort out my clothes and put them away.

Il me fait trier mes vêtements et les ranger.

Notice the structure here.

There’s the causative verb, then the person who does the action, and then the action.

It’s the same with the verb 'let'.

Il en va de même avec le verbe « let ».

Do your parents let you eat ice cream for breakfast?

Est-ce que tes parents te permettent de manger de la crème glacée pour le petit déjeuner ?

Well actually, unfortunately, no.

Et bien en fait, malheureusement, non.

No.

Non.

But they let me eat pancakes.

Mais ils me laissent manger des crêpes.

Oh well they’re very nice, aren’t they?

Eh bien, ils sont très gentils, n'est ce pas ?

And some maple syrup.

Et un peu de sirop d'érable.

So make and let follow the same structure.

Donc " make" et "let" suivent la même structure.

Causative verb, person action.

le verbe causatif, la personne l' action.

Now here’s the thing.

Maintenant, voici la chose.

Suppose we change the verbs ‘make’ and ‘let’ to the verbs 'force' and 'allow'.

Supposons que l'on change les verbes " make " et " let " par " force " et " allow "

They’re causative verbs too.

Ce sont aussi des verbes causatifs.

If we use them instead the meaning stays the same, but look what happens to the structure.

Si nous les utilisons le sens reste le même, mais regardez ce qui se passe avec la structure.

There’s a ‘to’ there.

Il y a un « to » là.

After make and let, we don’t say ‘to’.

Après " make" et " let ", nous ne disons pas « to ».

That’s strange.

C'est étrange.

After most verbs we put ‘to’, but not with make and let.

Après la plupart des verbes nous mettons « to », mais pas avec " make" et " let ".

And it’s the same with the causative verb 'have'.

Et c'est pareil avec le verbe causatif " have ".

Sometimes I walk Carter myself and sometimes I have the dog walker take him out

Parfois, je promène Carter moi même et parfois j'ai le promeneur de chien qui le prend.

We could also say 'get' here.

On pourrait aussi dire « get » ici.

Get is another causative verb and it means the same thing as have, but the pattern is

" Get" est un autre verbe causatif et cela signifie la même chose que " have ", mais le modèle est

different.

Sometimes I get the dog walker to take Carter out.

Parfois, j'ai le promeneur de chien qui sort Carter .

In structures with 'get', we say to.

Dans les structures avec « get », nous disons " to "

The elevator's broken down.

I had to climb up ten flights of stairs.

So remember, 'make' 'let' and 'have' - we don’t say ‘to’.

That’s the first tricky thing.

What about the past tense?

So first we made Carter go to his crate and then we let him come out.

It’s the causative verb that takes the tense.

Now there’s just one other thing you should know.

It’s about the causative verbs ‘have’ and ‘get’.

We often use them in the passive, so we talk about having things done and getting things
