Now it's very simple but it's very confusing,

So listen to me very carefully. It's very simple.

‘who’s’ ‘who + apostrophe + s’ is the contraction

'who's' 'who + apostrophe + s' คือการย่อ

of the verb ‘to be’.

ของคำกริยา 'to be'

So it's actually ‘who is’.

จริงๆ แล้วมันคือ 'ใคร'

If I say, ‘who's on the phone?’

ถ้าฉันพูดว่า 'ใครคุยโทรศัพท์อยู่'

It’s ‘who is on the phone’.

มันคือ 'ใครอยู่ในโทรศัพท์'

‘whose’ in one word ‘whose’

'ของใคร' ในคำเดียว 'ของใคร'

is the possessive.

เป็นผู้ครอบครอง

It means who does it belong to.

มันหมายความว่ามันเป็นของใคร

For example,

ตัวอย่างเช่น

‘Whose bag is this?’

'นี่คือกระเป๋าของใคร'

meaning ‘who does this bag belong to?’

ความหมาย 'กระเป๋าใบนี้เป็นของใคร'

And you can say, ‘It's my bag.’

และคุณสามารถพูดได้ว่า 'มันเป็นกระเป๋าของฉัน'

‘It's your bag.’ It's a possessive.

'มันเป็นกระเป๋าของคุณ' มันเป็นการครอบครอง.

If you really don't know

just try and replace the ‘s’ or ‘se’ with the verb 'to be'.

And see if it works.

Yes, it does.

So it is the contraction of the verb to be.

Now a second example,

well, let's take our very first example.

No. You can't. It's incorrect.

It's the possessive. ‘Whose mother is this?’

มันเป็นการครอบครอง 'นี่คือแม่ของใคร?'

It's my mother. It's your mother.

มันเป็นแม่ของฉัน มันเป็นแม่ของคุณ

It's his mother.

มันเป็นแม่ของเขา

Okay?

ตกลง?

Now one final example.

ตอนนี้ตัวอย่างสุดท้ายหนึ่งตัวอย่าง

‘Who's in the house?’

'ใครอยู่ในบ้าน?

Which one is it?

Is it the verb ‘to be’ or is it the possessive?

It's obviously the verb ‘to be’.

You can say, ‘Who is in the house?’
