Hard vs Hardly Adverb Meaning, Difference, Grammar, with Example English Sentences

Sometimes my students come to me. And they say, ‘Teacher, I worked so hardly.’

I think it's time for me to let you know the difference between ‘hard’ and ‘hardly’.

이제 '힘들다'와 '어렵다'의 차이를 알려드릴 때가 된 것 같습니다.

they use hardly as an adverb and this is incorrect, ok?

So it's time to fix that mistake.

Let's look at some example sentences together.

몇 가지 예문을 함께 살펴보겠습니다.

Ok, so if I say,

좋아, 그럼 내가

‘I'm a quick runner.’ or ‘I run quickly.’

'나는 빠른 주자야'라고 말한다면요. 또는 '나는 빨리 달린다.'

The meaning is the exact same.

의미는 똑같습니다.

There's no difference.

차이가 없습니다.

But in the first sentence, I use an adjective.

하지만 첫 번째 문장에서는 형용사를 사용합니다.

‘I'm a quick runner.’

'나는 빠른 주자입니다.'

And it describes a noun.

그리고 명사를 설명합니다.

Because as you know, an adjective describes a noun.

아시다시피 형용사는 명사를 설명하기 때문이죠.

In the second sentence,

두 번째 문장에서는

‘I run quickly.'

'나는 빨리 달린다.'

I go with an adverb.

나는 부사와 함께 간다.

That describes a verb.

그것은 동사를 설명합니다.

Okay.

좋아요.

Most of the time,

대부분의 경우

you can go from an adjective to an adverb

'ly'를 추가하면

by adding ‘ly’.

형용사에서 부사로 바뀔 수 있습니다 .

So from 'quick',

그래서 'quick'에서

we have the adverb 'quickly'.

'quickly'라는 부사가 생겼습니다.

Same thing goes for the second sentence,

두 번째 문장도 마찬가지입니다.

Well, the third actually.

음, 사실 세 번째 문장입니다.

‘She's a beautiful dancer.'

'그녀는 아름다운 댄서입니다.'

'She dances beautifully.’

'그녀는 아름답게 춤을 춘다.'

The meaning is the same,

의미는 같지만

but in the first sentence, we use an adjective.

첫 번째 문장에서는 형용사를 사용합니다.

'She's a beautiful dancer,' it describes a noun.

'그녀는 아름다운 댄서입니다'라는 말은 명사를 묘사합니다.

‘She dances beautifully.’

'그녀는 아름답게 춤을 춘다.'

That's an adverb

그건 부사

‘beautifully’

'아름답게'에

We added ‘ly’.

'ly'를 추가했어요.

So when you say,

‘You're a hard worker.’

'당신은 열심히 일하는 사람이에요'라고

You might think that you can say,

말할 때 . '열심히 일하시네요'

‘You work hardly.’

라고 말할 수 있을 것 같아요

You add ‘ly’,

. 'ly'를 추가하면

go from an adjective to an adverb. Right?

Well, I'm sorry guys, but this doesn't work.

It's incorrect, because ‘hard’ is an exception.

'hard'는 예외이기 때문에 틀렸습니다.

‘Hard’ is an adjective and an adverb.

'하드'는 형용사와 부사입니다.

It's the same word.

같은 단어입니다. 그러면

So you will say,

'열심히 일하구나'

‘You work hard.’

라고 말하게 될 것입니다 .

Okay? ‘You're a hard worker.’

좋아요? '당신은 열심히 일하는 사람이에요.'

‘You work hard.’

'너는 열심히 일하는구나.'

‘Hard is an adverb as well.’

'Hard는 부사이기도 하다.'

Now, the word ‘hardly’ does exist in the English language.

이제 영어에는 '거의'라는 단어가 존재하지 않습니다.

The problem is that the meaning is completely different.

문제는 그 의미가 전혀 다르다는 것입니다.

‘hardly’ means almost not.

'거의'는 거의 그렇지 않다는 뜻입니다. 그래서 실제로

So actually, when you say,

'일을 거의 안 한다' 고 말하면

‘You hardly work.’ Or ‘You work hardly.’

. 또는 '당신은 거의 일하지 않습니다.'

It means, you practically don't work.

즉, 실제로 일을 하지 않는다는 뜻입니다.

You really don't work.

당신은 정말로 일을 하지 않습니다.

Okay?

So you'll understand if you tell me,

그러니까 '나는 일을 거의 안 해요'라고 말하면 이해해 주실 거예요

‘I work hardly.’

.

I'm gonna get really angry.

So this is a huge mistake that you need to fix.

The adverb of the adjective ‘hard’ is ‘hard’.

And ‘hardly’ means almost not.

So for example, ‘I work hardly.’ means

means ‘I work a lot.’
