And now look at that sentence.

अब आप देखिए उस वाक्य को।

One of them is wrong.

इनमें से एक अनुचित है।

spelling mistake in English.

एक गंभीर त्रुटि के बारे में

Among students, but also, among native speakers.

न केवल विद्यार्थियों के मध्य, किन्तु मातृभाषियों के मध्य भी।

It's a difference between 'it's' meaning 'it is'.

यह है ‘it’s’ अर्थात ‘it is',

And 'its' being the possessive adjective.

और ‘its’, एक संबंधवाचक विशेषण के बीच का अंतर।

Okay let's and take a few sentences and I'm sure you'll get it.

अच्छा आइए कुछ वाक्य लेते हैं और निश्चित ही आपको यह आ जायेगा।

So we have 'It's a sunny day'.

तो हमारे पास है “It's a sunny day.” ‘यह एक सूर्यवत दिन है।‘

In this case 'it's' is the verb 'to be'.

इस प्रकरण में ‘it’s’ का संबंध ‘to be' क्रिया से है।

So it means 'It is a sunny day'.

अतः इसका अर्थ है “It is a sunny day”.

If we take the second sentence:

यदि हम दूसरा वाक्य लें:

'The dog ate its food'.

“The dog ate its food.” ‘कुत्ते ने अपना भोजन खाया।‘

This is not the verb 'to be'.

इसमें क्रिया ‘to be' से साथ संबंध नहीं है।

It's the possessive adjectives for an object or an animal.

यह किसी पशु अथवा वस्तु के लिए उपयोग किया गया संबंधवाचक विशेषण है।

So the food belongs to the dog. It is its food.

तो यह भोजन कुत्ते का है। वह उसका भोजन है।

Okay so these are two different cases

अच्छा तो यह दो विभिन्न प्रकरण हैं

but sometimes when we write, we confuse the two,

किन्तु कभी-कभी इन्हें लिखते समय हम भ्रमित हो जाते हैं

and we will write the dog ate it's food with apostrophe s.

और हम “The dog ate its food.” में ‘its’ शब्द को अक्षर लोप/एपॉस्ट्रॉफ़ी सहित लिख देते हैं। 23 00:01:27,620 --> 00:01:31,040 वो पता है ना आपको, ‘its’ संबंधवाचक विशेषण और ‘to be' क्रिया के

you know getting confused between its possessive adjectives

and it's being the contraction of the verb 'to be'.

संकुचन के बीच गड़बड़ा जाना।

This is a very common mistake.

यह एक बड़ी ही सामान्य सी त्रुटि है।

if we take for example the sentence:

यदि उदाहरण के लिए हम इस वाक्य को लें:

'Its my pen'.

“Its my pen.”

Now look at the sentence.

अब इस वाक्य को देखिए।

What do you think?

क्या लग रहा है आपको?

Is this right? Or is this the wrong spelling?

क्या यह ठीक है? या अनुचित वर्तनी है?

Well it's wrong.

वैसे यह त्रुटिपूर्ण है।

'It's my pen' is the verb 'to be'.

“It’s my pen” है जो आता है ‘to be' क्रिया से।

Now the best tip that I can give you

अब सबसे उत्तम उपाय जो में आपको दे सकती हूँ

if you get confused, try and say it with the full form.

यदि आप भ्रमित हो जाएं, वह यह है के आप इसे इसके पूर्ण रूप में बोलने का प्रयास कीजिए।

Try and say 'It is'.

प्रयत्न कीजिए ‘It is' बोलने का।

If it makes sense, then it's the contraction of the verb 'to be'

यदि ऐसे में अर्थ बन रहा है, तो वह ‘to be' क्रिया का संकुचन है।

and it should be apostrophe 's'.

और उसमें ‘s’ के साथ अक्षर लोप लगना चाहिए।

If it doesn't make sense, then it's probably the possessive adjective.

यदि अर्थ नहीं बन रहा तो संभवतः वह संबंधवाचक विशेषण है। 39 00:02:18,060 --> 00:02:23,000 तो उदाहरण के लिए, मैं कह सकती हूं, “It is a sunny day.”?

So for example, I can say, 'It is a sunny day'.

That makes sense.

इसमें अर्थ निकल रहा है।

Can I say the dog ate it is food?

क्या मैं कह सकती हूँ “The dog ate it is food.”?

No, I can't. that doesn't make any sense.

जी नहीं, में नहीं कह सकती। इसका कोई अर्थ ही नहीं निकल रहा।

Okay if I say, 'It's my pen',

ठीक है, यदि मैं कहूँ, “It’s my pen.’,

What do you think? Can I say 'It is my pen'?

क्या लग रहा ? क्या मैं “It is my “ कह सकती हूँ?

I can.

जी बिल्कुल हाँ।

So it's actually the contraction of the verb 'to be'.

तो यह वास्तविकता में ‘to be' क्रिया का संकुचन है।

So it should be 'it' + apostrophe 's' + my pen.

अतः यह ‘it’ + अक्षर लोप ‘s’ + my pen है।

And just so you know one last thing.

और ताके आपको ज्ञात हो, एक अंतिम बात।

Be careful because sometimes in some cases

ध्यान रहे क्योंकि कुछ प्रकरणों में

'it's' can also be the contraction of the verb 'to have' and not 'to be'.

“it's” “to have” क्रिया का संकुचन भी हो सकता है और न के “to be” का।

If we take those two sentences:

यदि हम यह दो वाक्य लेते हैं:

It's been great to meet you.

It's been great to meet you. ‘आपसे मिलना बढ़िया रहा।‘

It means - It has been great to meet you.

इसका अर्थ है – It has been great to meet you.

'It's got four legs' means it has got four legs.

“It’s got four legs.” का अर्थ है के उसके चार पैर हैं।(It has got four legs.)

Okay so the verb in those cases is 'to have' so be careful.

अच्छा तो उन प्रकरणों में क्रिया है ‘to have' इसलिए सावधानी बरतिए।
