In today's lesson, I am going to teach a basic English video about the indefinite articles:

‘a’ and ‘an’

وهي "أ" "a" و "أن" "an".

and how to use them before a noun.

وكيفية استخدامها قبل الأسماء.

Let's focus on ‘a’ and ‘an’.

When do we use ‘a’ and ‘an’?

متى نستخدم الأداتين 'الحرفين' "a" و "an"؟

All right, so first sentence here:

حسناً، الجملة الأولى هنا:

“I'm ____ woman.”

أنا ____ امرأة.

So woman starts with a ‘w’.

لذا كلمة إمرأة تبدأ بالحرف "w".

The answer here is ‘a’.

“I'm a woman.”

Okay, second one.

“I'm _blank_ artist.”

‘artist’ starts with an ‘a’

so the answer is ‘an’.

All right. Now, if we keep going, we've got a little bit longer sentence.

So ‘university’ starts with the vowel ‘u’, right?

That's the letter ‘u’. It's a vowel.

So what's the answer?

Before we learn about ‘a and ‘an’,

it's important to know what consonants and vowels are.

The English alphabet has 26 letters.

تتكون الأبجدية الإنجليزية من 26 حرفاً.

21 letters are consonants and there are five main vowels:

Now is a good time to learn the rule of when to use ‘a’ and when to use ‘an’ before a noun.

As young learners your English teacher probably taught you this rule:

عندما كنتَ في المدرسة، ربما معلم اللغة الإنجليزية دَرَّسكَ هذه القاعدة.

‘If a noun begins with a consonant, we use ‘a’.’

عندما يبدأ الاسم بحرف ساكن، فإننا نستخدم "أ" "a".

‘If a noun begins with a vowel, we use ‘an’.’

Let's take a look at the board again to check this rule.

دعونا نلقي نظرة على السبورة مرة أخرى للتحقق من هذه القاعدة.

First, we have “a bag.”

أولاً، لدينا "حقيبة".

‘bag’ starts with a ‘b’. That's a consonant so “a bag.”

Second, we have “a cat.” ‘cat’ starts with ‘c’.

That's a consonant so this is correct.

“a cat”

"قطة"

Next, we have “an apple.”

‘apple’ starts with ‘a’ which is a vowel.

So ‘an’ is correct.

Then we have “an eraser.”

‘eraser’ starts with an ‘e’.

‘e’ is a vowel.

This is correct.

Next is “an iron.”

‘iron’ starts with an ‘i’.

‘i' is a vowel.

“an iron” is correct.

Then “an oven.”

‘oven’ starts with an ‘o’.

‘o’ is a vowel.

This is also right.

هذا أيضا صحيح.

And finally, “an umbrella.”

وأخيراً كلمة "مظلة".

‘umbrella’ starts with a ‘u’.

تبدأ كلمة "مظلة" بالحرف "u".

‘u’ is a vowel.

u' حرف متحرك.

This is correct.

هذا صحيح.

If you look at it, it's the vowels:

إذا نظرت إليها فأنك ستري بإنها حروف متحركة.

a e i o u

"u"، "o" ، "i"، "e" ، "a"وهي

So it looks like the rule is working very well

لذا يبدو أن القاعدة تعمل بشكلٍ جيد.

but actually this is not the real rule.

ولكن في الواقع هذه ليست القاعدة الصحيحة.

Let's take a look at the next board.

دعونا نلقي نظرة على على السبورة.

So again, let's look at these two first examples:

“a cat”

“قطة"

‘cat’ starts with a ‘c’.

That's a consonant.

That's right.

“an apple”

‘apple’ starts with an ‘a’.

"تفاحة" تبدأ بالحرف "a".

That's a vowel.

So that's also correct.

“an apple”

Now, let's look at these two.

الآن، دعونا نلقي نظرة على هاتين الكلمتين التاليتين.

“a university”

"جامعة"

‘university’ starts with a ‘u’.

تبدأ كلمة "جامعة" بالحرف "u".

So ‘u’ is a vowel.

Why does it go with ‘a’?

“a university”

And what about this one,

‘hour’ starts with an ‘h’.

So why is it “an hour”?

You can see ‘a’ before a vowel

The real rule is

القاعدة الصحيحة هي،

‘a’ comes before a consonant sound.

And ‘an’ comes before a vowel sound.

و يأتي الحرف "an" قبل الصوت المتحرك.

‘c’ is a consonant sound

و الحرف "c" له صوت ساكن

so we use ‘a’.

لذا نستخدم "a".

‘a’ is a vowel sound

و "a" هو صوت متحرك.

so we use ‘an’.

لذلك نستخدم "an".

The ‘u’ in university sounds like ‘ya’.

يبدو حرف "u" في كلمة "جامعة" مثل "ya" "يا".

‘ya’ is the ‘y’ sound.

و 'ay' هو صوت الحرف "y".

And ‘y’ is a consonant.

و "y" حرف ساكن.

Because it has that y consonant sound

لأنه يحتوي على صوت حرف "y" الساكن.

we use, ‘a’.

نستخدم "أ" "a"

And ‘h’ is silent.

و "h" هو حرف صامت في هذه الكلمة

‘hour’ begins with a vowel sound.

"ساعة"

Because it has that vowel sound, we use ‘an’.

لأنها تحتوي على هذا الصوت المتحرك ، نستخدم "أن" "an"

So it's important when choosing ‘a’ or ‘an’,

لذلك من المهم عند اختيار "a" أو "an" ،

not to focus just on the letter,

but also the sound that the letter is making.

Remember, before we saw ‘hour’?

And the ‘h’ in honor and hour is silent.

So it starts with the vowel sound.

So “an honor”.

Now look at this one.

Let's focus on the ‘f’.
