I got this idea when I saw a couple of other videos on this topic, and I was horrified

このシリーズを作ろうと思ったきっかけですが、

英単語の発音をテーマにした他のクリエイターの動画を観ているなかで、恐ろしいことに気付いたからです。

at what I saw.

In those videos, people were teaching the full pronunciation of these words, like: THAT,

それらの動画の中では、 THAT、HAVE、 TOなどの発音を

実際の発音とは違う発音で教えていたのです。

HAVE, TO.

So many of the 100 most common words are function words and they reduce.

これらの100個の単語のほとんどは機能語で、

きちんと発音しないことが大半なのに。

It is completely unnatural to fully pronounce each word in American English.

アメリカ英語では、これらの単語をきちんと発音する ことはとても不自然なのに。

どういうことかと言いますと、

Let me show you what I mean.

This sentence is four words, and each one of these words is in the 100 most common words

このセンテンスを見てください。4つの単語はすべて「英単語トップ100リスト」に登場する単語です。

That’s the full pronunciation of each of those words.

すべてを綺麗に発音するとこうなります。

And if that’s all you learn about the pronunciation, then this is how you would pronounce that

もしこの発音しか習っていなかったら、 あなたが発音するときも当然こう読むでしょう。

sentence: This is for work.

This is for work.

This is for work.

Well, I don’t want any of my students thinking that that is the correct way to pronounce

でも、

これが正しい発音だとは思わないでほしいのです。

that sentence.

It’s not.

違うんです。

It’s not natural.

今の読み方は自然な発音ではありません。

Is and for are not fully pronounced.

isとforはきちんと読まないのが正しい発音です。

Rhythm in American English is extremely important for capturing the character of the language:

アメリカ英語がアメリカ英語らしく聞こえるためには、とにかくリズムが大事なのです。

for understanding Americans when they speak, and for sounding natural and being easily

アメリカ人の英語を聞き取れるようになるには、そしてアメリカ人に一発で通じる英語を話すためには

understood when you speak.

1つの文章の中に、長く伸ばす音節、短く発音する音節 が入っていることが重要です。

Some syllables are long, and some are very very short.

This contrast is the rhythm of American English.

このコントラストこそがアメリカ英語のリズムです。

In order to make those short syllables really short, some words in American English, some

of the most common words, reduce.

軽く読んだり、弱く読んだり、 もしくは全く読まないということもあります。

This means a sound changes or is dropped.

And everybody studying English should know these.

Let’s take our sentence again and talk about the real pronunciation of it.

先ほどのセンテンスをもう一度見てみましょう。

Two words are longer.

この二つが長く読むところです。

And two words are shorter.

そしてこの二つが短く読むところ。

So it's not iz but is.

And it's not for but fer.

So as we go through the 100 most common words in American English here, we’re going to

talk about rhythm and reductions at the same time, to make sure that you’re learning

the correct pronunciation, not the full pronunciation, which is rarely used in most function words.

Okay, let’s start at the beginning.

それでは早速、始めていきましょう。

The number one most common word in American English is THE.

アメリカ英語でもっとも多いのはTHEです。

In a sentence it will become the, the.

文章の中ではこういう発音になります。

Very fast with a schwa.

シュワ（曖昧母音）を含んだ非常に速い音です。

This is when the next word begins with a consonant.

次に来るのが子音のときは

For example, “the most”, the, the most.

こうなります。

It's usually pronounced with the EE vowel, the, the, the.

このようにEの入った発音をすることも多いです。

If the next word begins with a vowel or diphthong, for example, “the other”, the, the, the.

次が母音または二重母音だったらこうなります。

The most important thing about the pronunciation of this word is that it should be said very

一番大事なのは

It should never be THE CAT, THE CAT.

The next word is ‘be’, and I assume this means the verb TO BE, conjugated.

The important thing to know about these pronunciations is that they will almost always be said in

a contraction, ‘I am’ becomes I’m, I'm, I'm.

Said very quickly, I’m.

Mしか聞こえないこともあるくらいです。

Sometimes you’ll even hear as just.

the M sound: M’sorry.

M’sorry, mm, mm, mm.

M’sorry, mm, mm, mm.

This is a natural pronunciation.

これが自然な発音です。

YOU ARE, you’re, reduces to ‘you’re’.

YOU AREはyou'reになります。

Super fast.

ものすごく速いですよね。

basically no vowel.

基本的には母音の音は入りません。

You're, you're.

You're, you're.

You’re gonna be okay.

You’re gonna be okay. （きっと大丈夫よ）

Very fast.

速く！

HE IS becomes ‘he’s’.He's.

HE IS は he’s, he's.

SHE IS is she’s.

SHE IS はshe’s, she's.

She's.

She's.

IT IS, it’s, it’s, it’s.

IT ISはit’s, it’s, it’s.

Sometimes we reduce this even further we change a sound, we dropped the vowel.

もっといくと母音が完全に落ちて

We say just ‘ts’.

‘ts’になることも。

Ts, ts. ‘ts cool! ‘ts awesome!

‘ts cool! ‘ts awesome!

‘ts’だけです。

Ts.

聞いたことありませんか？

Have you ever heard that?

‘Ts cool.

‘Ts cool.’

‘Ts raining.

‘Ts raining.'

It's a common reduction.

とても一般的なリダクションです。

WE ARE, we’re, becomes ‘we’re’.

WE AREはwe’re, we’re’.

We’re running late.

We’re running late. （遅れそうです）

‘we’re’, ‘we’re’.

速く！

Very fast.

THEY ARE, they’re becomes ‘they’re’.

THEY AREは they’re は they’re.

Very fast, the vowel changes, they’re.

速く！母音の音も変わります。

They’re okay.

They’re okay. （彼らは大丈夫）

They’re, they’re.

They’re, they’re.

Word number three: to.

No.3はTOです。

Almost never pronounced this way, to.

こんな風に発音することは まずありません！

We use a reduction: the vowel changes to the schwa.

これも母音がシュワに変化して リダクションになります。

To, to, said very quickly.

速く読みます。

And sometimes, the true T at the beginning changes to more of a D sound, or a Flap T.

最初のTがDに近い音になることも。

“Let’s go to the beach.”

Let’s go to the beach. （ビーチに行こう）

Go to the.

Go to the.

Go to.

How is ‘to’ being pronounce there? to to, go to.

TOの発音はどうなっているかと言うと

舌をフラップ（弾く）して、それからシュワ

A flap of the tongue, and the schwa.

Said very quickly.

を素早く

Go to the beach.

Go to the beach.

It’s nothing like TO, is it?

もはやTOには聞こえないですよね。

OF.

OF

Again, we don’t fully pronounce this word.

これもきちんとは発音しません。

It’s not OF, it’s of.

OFではなく……

シュワ、きわめて軽いV。 これを素早く発音します。

Schwa, very light V, said very quickly.

And actually, you’ll often hear this word without the ‘v’.

実はVは発音しないことも少なくありません。

Then it’s just the schwa, and we pronounce it this way in phrases ‘kind

そうなるとシュワだけになるので

of’ and ‘sort of’.

kind ofやsort ofはこんな風になります。

kinda, sorta.

たとえばこんな風に。

For example, I’m kinda tired.

I’m kinda tired. （なんか疲れてるかも）

Kinda.

Kinda, uh, uh, uh.

Schwa, very fast.

シュワを素早く。

Kinda.

Ok, we’re only four words in, but let’s review.

I’m going to put up a sentence.

Look at it, find the reduction, and then say the sentence with the reduction.

Say the reduction very quickly.

Here's one sentence:

How quickly did you make that first word?

So natural.

とても自然です。

When you learn the reductions in American English, and you start to really use them

アメリカ英語のリダクションのルールを学んだら とにかく使ってみることです。

in your speech, you gain a native feeling.

ネイティヴの感覚がわかってきますよ。

Also, understanding Americans becomes easier because you can start to identify the reductions.

どこをリダクションしているかがわかれば アメリカ人の英語がもっと聞き取りやすくなります。

One more for you to try out loud now: I want you to try reducing the word ‘to’.

もう一つ、練習問題です。

Look at it, think about it, now try it out loud.

見て、考えて、そして声に出して言ってみましょう。

I’m making that the Flap T and the schwa.

Alright, we’ll keep going with number 5: AND.

Another word that we rarely fully pronounce.

これもほとんど発音しません。

There are a couple of different ways to reduce this.

リダクションの仕方にはいくつかあるのですが、

We’ll start with the full pronunciation, and we’ll reduce from there.

まずはきちんと読むやり方から始めて、 だんだん落としていきましょう。

AA vowel followed by N consonant: the tongue is lifted in the back for AA, Aaaa.

Aという母音のあとにNが来たときは 最初は舌の後ろの部分が上がっているのですが

Then relaxes before the N. Aa-uh, aa-uh, aa-uh.

Nのときには降りてきます。

So it’s not a pure AA sound.

ですから、Aのクリアな音が ずっと続くわけではありません。

Aa-uh, aa-uh.

And, and, and, and, and.

And, and, and, and, and.

まずはDの音を落とします。

First reduction is just dropping the D. “An’, An’and I think it will be okay.”

An, An' I, An’ I.

An, An' I, An’ I.

No D, just the N into the next word.

Dを言わずに次の単語に移行。

An' I think it will be okay. （それで大丈夫なはず）

An' I think it will be okay.

Another reduction, more common, is to just say the N sound, “N’.

もう一つはNの音だけを発音するというもの。 こちらの方が一般的です。

N' I think it will be okay.”

N’, N', just straight from the N into the next word.

Nの音だけを出してすぐ次の単語へ。

N' I, N' I think it will be okay.

N' I, N' I think it will be okay.

Cookies and cream, salt and pepper, black and white, up and down, left and right.

Cookies and cream, salt and pepper, black and white, up and down, left and right.

All of these, I’m just making a quick N sound, linking the two other words.

すべて、二つの単語の間に短いNの発音を挟むだけ という読み方をしています。

Up and down.

Up and down.

Number 6.

No.6に行きましょう。

Okay, we’re actually going to do 6 and 32 together, because they’re related.

No.6とNo.32は似ているので いっぺんにやってしまいます。

They're the articles A and AN.

それらは冠詞のAとANです。

Now, we don’t say A and AN.

どちらもこんな風にきちんとは読みません。

We say ‘a’ and ‘an’.

こういう読み方をします。

Schwa.

シュワですね。

Very fast, very little movement for the mouth.

素早く！口はあまり開けません。

A, a, a coffee.

A, a, a coffee.

A, a or An, an example.

A, a or An, an example.

Number 7.

次はNo.7.

IN.

INです。

We don’t drop or change a sound here.

この単語は音を落としたり変えたりが 出来ない単語なのですが、

We don’t reduce.

But it is still unstressed.

「強く読まない」という読み方をします。

This mean it should be really short, less clear.

素早く読む、ハッキリした音にならないように読む。 これがポイントです。

Instead of saying ‘IN’, we would say ‘in’.

INではなく……

“He’s in love.”

”He’s in love.” （彼は恋をしている）

In, in.

In, in.

“She’s in a hurry”.

She’s in a hurry. （彼女は急いでいる）

In, in, in.

In, in, in.

So be careful.

It’s not IN.

INではないですよ。

That sounds stressed.

それでは強すぎます。

It’s ‘in’.

‘in’です。

Number 8: THAT.

No.8はTHATです。

THAT is a word that can be used lots of different ways in American English.

アメリカ英語では、THATは 色々な読み方をする単語です。

And in some cases, in many cases, we reduce the vowel from AA to the schwa

もっとも多いのはAの発音をシュワにするというもの。

so THAT becomes ‘that’.

THATではなく、こうなります。

Now the ending T: the pronunciation of that sound depends on the beginning of the next

最後のTの発音は次に来る音によって変わります。

word.

If the next word begins with a vowel or diphthong, it’s a Flap T: That I, d d, d that I.

次の単語が母音もしくは二重母音で始まる場合、 フラップTとなり、こんな音になります。

If the next word begins with a consonant, then it’s a Stop T. That she.

次が子音ならストップTとなり、舌をはじくことなく、舌が上あごに近づいて終わりとなります。

I know, it’s a little confusing.

ちょっと難しいですよね。わかります。

But just note that we often don't pronounce this word, that.

THATと発音することはない、ということだけでも 知っていただければと思います。

We often reduce it so it has the schwa that.

Number 9: the verb HAVE.

No.9はHAVEです。

Just like the verb ‘be’, this will often be used as a contraction in spoken English,

BEと同様に、縮約系になることの多い単語です。

which is already a reduction.

その時点ですでにリダクションは起きています。

We’re already changing sounds for that: I HAVE becomes I’ve, I’ve I’ve I’ve

I haveがI'veになるのですから。

I’ve.

“I’ve been wanting to see that.” （私はずっとそれが見たかった）

“I’ve been wanting to see that.”

I’ve I’ve.

I’ve I’ve.

YOU HAVE becomes ‘you’ve.’

YOU HAVE は ‘you’ve’になります。

HE HAS becomes ‘he’s’.

HE HAS は ‘he’s’.

He's he's.

He's he's.

You’ve you’ve.

You’ve you’ve.

He’s been waiting.

He’s been waiting. （彼はずっと待っている）

Here’s something interesting: the pronunciation of the HAS contraction.

ここで、HASの縮約系について 面白い点を一点ご紹介します。

With ‘he’ and ‘she’, it’s pronounced as a Z. Hiz.

‘he’ ’she'のときは最後のSの発音はZになります。Hiz.

Hiz been, hiz been.

Shiz, shiz.

But with Shes shiz shiz.

But with it, its, it’s been raining, then it’s an S sound.

でもitのときはSと発音します。

it’s been raining. （ずっと雨が降っている）

It's.

He’s, Z it’s, Ss S. WE HAVE becomes ‘we’ve’, we’ve’ we’ve’ and THEY HAVE becomes

He’sはZ、It'sはS、We haveは‘we’ve、 They haveはThey'veですが

‘they’ve’ which sounds like deiv when it's unstressed.

They'veはさらにこんな音になります。

Number 10: the pronoun I.

No.10は代名詞のIです。

Usually said very quickly, it’s not “I” but “I”.

これは「I」ではなくこんな風に短く 発音することがほとんどです。

I think so.

I think so. （私はそう思う）

I, I, I. I think, I.

I, I, I. I think, I.

If you’re speaking really quickly, you can maybe get away with something more like ‘aa’

ものすごく早口で話すときは 「ア」だけになってしまうことも。

than ‘I’.

こんな風に。

I think so.

Aa aa aa.

I think so.

ここまで速くなると、二重母音であるかどうかは 判別不可能になります。

When it’s said so quickly, you can’t really tell if I’m doing the full diphthong I or

not.

Wow.

Okay, we just did the ten most common words in English, and none of them are fully pronounced.

頻出英単語トップ10を見てきましたが、 きちんと発音するものは一つもありませんでした。

They’re all words that are unstressed or reduced.

これらはどれも ①強調しないか②音を落として発音をする単語です。

Interesting.

面白いですね。

Keep your eyes out, that’s an idiom that means to look for something.

Keep your eyes out. 英語で「目を光らせておく」という意味です。
