This is likely different from what you learned in English class.

学校で学んだ発音とは異なると思います。

You see, in American English, we have all sorts of words that are unstressed or even reduced:

アメリカ英語では弱く読んだり、音を落としたり

that means we change the pronunciation.

The set of the 100 most common words in American English contains many, many words that reduce.

Number 51: the word WHEN.

No.51はWHENです。

This word definitely reduces.

この単語はリダクションしますよ。

Fully pronounced, it’s the W sound,

きちんと発音すると、

the EH as in BED vowel, and the N consonant.

子音のW、BEDのEHという母音、そして子音のNで、

When.

WHEN.という発音になります。

You may be thinking, I’ve heard this word pronounced differently.

あれ？なんか違う発音も聞いたことあるぞ！？

You may have heard it pronounce hhwen.

と思った方もいるかもしれません。

こんな風に。

Hhh— when.

WH- words can be pronounced with a “hh”

WHから始まる単語はWの前にHHという音を

sound before the W.

入れて読むことがあります。

It’s not necessary, and it’s not my preference.

絶対ではないですし、私自身はあまり好きではありません。

I think, just keep it simple, just use a clean W sound.

私は「Wの音でシンプルに発音すればいいのでは？」

When.

というスタンスです。

But in a sentence, this word can be unstressed and said more quickly.

ただ、文章の中では弱く読んだり、 速く読んだりすることはあります。

Then you could write the vowel with the schwa or the IH as in SIT vowel in IPA.

そのときは母音のIPA発音記号はシュワ、 もしくはSITと同じ記号になります。

becomes: when,

こういう発音になります。

You see, we don’t want every word in American English to be fully pronounced,

Some of the understandability of English depends on the contrast

of stressed and unstressed syllables, clear and less clear.

Let’s look at number 52, the word ‘make’.

No.52はMAKEです。

Now, this is a stressed word.

これは強調して読む単語です。

We have two categories of words in American English:

Content Words and Function Words.

内容語と機能語です。

Content words are nouns, verbs, like this verb ‘make’,

内容語は名詞、動詞、形容詞、副詞で、 これらは強く読みます。

adjectives, and adverbs, and content words are what are generally stressed in a sentence.

“Make”:

MAKE

M consonant, AY diphthong,

子音のM、二重母音、

and the K sound,

そして最後にKの音

is usually stressed in a sentence.

It has an up-down shape.

That’s the stressed shape of intonation.

That’s different from:

which was flatter in pitch and lower.

shape of stress,

高低がはっきりしています。

No.53.

Here, we have a beautiful reduction.

見事なリダクションです。

It’s the word ‘can’.

CANです。

If ‘can’ is a main verb, then it’s not reduced.

動詞のときはリダクションにはなりません。

Who can help tomorrow?

Who can help tomorrow? （明日手伝ってくれる人いる？）

I can.

I can. （私出来ます！）

Also, it doesn’t reduce if it’s a noun:

あ、同じ綴りでも名詞のときは リダクションにはなりませんよ。

a can of soup.

スープの缶、とか。

But most of the time, ‘can’ is a helping verb, not a main verb,

でも大半はCANは動詞ではなく助動詞です。

and that means it reduces.

ということはリダクションになるということです。

We change a sound.

Let’s go back to the example:

もう一度例文を見てみましょう。

Who can help tomorrow?

Who can help tomorrow? （明日手伝ってくれる人いる？）

I can.

I can! （私、出来ます！）

In the question:

質問では、

Who can help tomorrow?

HELPが動詞で、

‘Help’ is the main verb.

CANは助動詞です。

‘Can’ is the helping verb.

Did you hear how I pronounced it?

どうやって発音していたかわかりましたか？

Who can help tomorrow?

Who can help?

It’s no longer ‘can’, but ‘kn’.

もはやCANではなくKNのような発音になっています。

Who can—

Who can help?

Short, flat, no vowel.

短く、平坦で、母音もなくなっています。

We write it in IPA with the schwa.

発音記号はシュワになります。

Kn, kn, kn.

‘See’

Seeが動詞で、

the main verb, ‘can’ the helping verb.

That’s quite a reduction.

けっこうなリダクションです。

Very common.

Number 54: The word ‘like’.

No.54はLIKEです。

This word can be used lots of different ways, so it can be an adverb,

この単語は色々な使い方をされます。

a noun, or an adjective, which would mean it’s stressed,

副詞、名詞、形容詞のときは強く。

or it can be a preposition or conjunction,

前置詞や接続詞のときは

which means it will be a function word and is unstressed.

However, even when it’s unstressed,

this word does not reduce.

Let’s look at an example where it’s stressed.

I don’t like it.

Here, it’s stressed.

But what about this sentence?

ではこの文はどうでしょう？

He acted like nothing happened.

He acted like nothing happened. （彼は何事もなかったかのように振る舞った）

He acted like—

like, like, lower in pitch, much faster.

like, like, 弱く、速く。

He acted like nothing happened.

Unstressed.

弱く。

None of the sounds change so it doesn’t reduce,

音の変化やリダクションはありませんが

but it’s pretty different from the stressed version.

One more example, and this is a really common use of the word.

もう一つ例を見てみましょう。 これは本当によく使う用法です。

We use this when we’re telling a story,

something that happened to us,

and we’re talking about what someone said or someone’s reaction.

All of these are examples of ‘like’ unstressed.

Number 55: Time.

No.55はTIMEです。

Now this word, a noun, an adjective, a verb, is always a content word.

この単語は名詞、形容詞、そして動詞です。

That means it will likely be stressed.

ということは内容語で、強調して読みます。

This is only the 6th word in this list so far that is always stressed.

リストの中で6個目の、常に強調する単語です。

We’re on number 55.

もう55個目ですよ。

That’s crazy.

So if you thought every word you spoke needed to be clear and fully pronounced,

Let’s look at a sentence.

A noun.

名詞です。

Or, you do sit ups for a minute, and I’ll time you.

You do sit ups for a minute, and I’ll time you. （1分間腹筋して。私が測るから）

Time, time.

There, it’s a verb, still stressed, same pronunciation.

動詞ですから、同じように強調して読みます。

Number 56: No.

No.56はNOです。

Another word, the seventh word, that will generally always be stressed.

これは7番目の、通常は強調する単語です。

There is not a case where it would usually reduce or be unstressed.

リダクションや弱く読むことはまずありません。

And please don’t ever forget the lip rounding that goes into this diphthong:

He voted ‘no’ on the sugar tax.

That was a simple one, wasn’t it?

What about 57?

No.57はどうでしょう？

57 is interesting.

The word ‘just’.

JUSTです。

It’s either an adjective or an adverb,

この単語は形容詞か副詞です。

and those are both content words, so it will generally be stressed.

どちらも内容語です。通常は強調して読みます。

And for the most part, we don’t reduce stressed words.

リダクションはしません。

They’re important.

なぜなら、重要だからです。

We only reduce and say quickly the words that are a little less important, the function words.

リダクションは、重要度が少し低い単語… 機能語を速く読むだけです。

BUT.

と言いつつ……

This word is interesting because it has a T,

この単語は面白いのです。

and T has its own set of funny rules.

この単語にはTが入っていて、Tにはもともと いくつかの発音のルールがあるからです。

If the T comes between two consonants,

Tが子音に挟まれたときは

we often drop that T.

Well, that’s a reduction.

Let me show you what I mean.

When the word ‘just’ is followed by a word that starts with a consonant,

JUSTのあとに子音が続く場合には

there is a good chance that a native speaker will drop the T,

ネイティヴば、まずTは発音しません。

and just say: jus.

こんな風に。

Jus’ instead of ‘just’.

JUSTではなく。

I just thought, why not?

The ST ending is followed by TH,

STのあとにすぐTHを発音します。

the T comes between two consonants,

Tが子音に挟まれるので

we drop it:

落とします。

jus’ thought, just’ thought.

I just missed the bus. （ちょうどバスに乗り遅れちゃって）

S-T-M, drop the T.

S,T,Mですが、Tを落とします。

Now, if ‘just’ is followed by a word that begins with a vowel or diphthong, don’t drop the T.

JUSTが母音や二重母音に続くときは

Tはちゃんと読んでくださいね。

Just make it a light, True T.

This one is a function word: him.

And just like number 9, “have”,

number 23, “his”,

number 29, “her”,

No.29のHERと同様に

we often drop the H and link this to the word before.

For example, I gave him another one.

A very common reduction.

We do this with these function words that begin with an H.

I’m dropping the H,

so it doesn’t come between two consonants.

You’re thinking, wait, we already did that.

「もうやりましたよ」っていう声が聞こえそうです。

That was number 56.

Yes, but, different word.

はい、同じ発音ですが違う単語です。

‘No’ and ‘know’ are homophones.

NOとKNOWはhomophonesです。

That’s right. That means they sound exactly the same,

even though they are two different words and they’re spelled differently.

A verb. Usually stressed in a sentence.

動詞です。通常は強調して読みます。

N consonant, OH diphthong:

However, with really common phrases, we often make some reductions,

like how ‘going to’ becomes ‘gonna’.

And with the really common phrase “I don’t know”,

we make a reduction.

And, this can sound like the last sound is not OH:

It’s more like a quick ‘uh’ there.

短い’uh’という音です。

Certainly not: know, oh, oh, with a full and stressed OH diphthong.

Number 60,

No.60は

the last word for this video, the word “take”.

TAKEです。この動画の最後の単語です。

Usually a verb, sometimes a noun, it’s a content word.

And generally, it’s going to be stressed in a sentence.

Just like ‘time’,

it’s a one-syllable stressed word that begins with a True T,

So far, there were only seven where I could say,
