might have created some really funny situations.

In this lesson, we’ll learn about five common mistakes

and their hilariously funny literal meanings in English.

If you control something, you have power over it and you

can do with it what you want.

She controlled his car.

You don’t usually need to control writing or homework,

but rather check that they are correct.

Could you check my writing? Absolutely. No problem.

Oh, my. It’s so hot in here. Maybe try to take off your hoodie.

Try to do something means to attempt to do

something very difficult and really put in the effort.

But here we want to try something as a test or

experiment to see if it helps or works.

For that we would normally use try doing.

Oh, my. It’s so hot in here.

Maybe try taking off your hoodie.

They were talking to themselves the whole night.

As you could probably see, this sentence literally

means that the people were not interacting

with each other, but speaking and listening to their own talks.

Here is how we could change the sentence.

They were talking to each other the whole night.

Can you throw the cushion at me?

To throw something at somebody usually

means that we want to hit them with that object.

If you want the person to catch what you throw, you can say,

can you throw the cushion to me?

I’ve been eating three tomatoes today.

It’s not so easy to be eating three tomatoes at once.

You need present perfect simple, not continuous, to speak about the

result of your day.

So you can say, I’ve eaten three tomatoes today.
