How to Learn English on Youtube

As you know, YouTube is an amazing tool

for learning a language like English.

There are, however, a few tips that I can give you

that might make that experience even better,

The first thing that you can can do

यूट्यूब पर वीडियो देखते वक़्त पहला काम जो आप कर सकते हैं अपनी अंग्रेज़ी सुधारने के लिये वो है वीडियो की स्पीड बदलना।

when you are watching YouTube videos

to improve your English, is to adjust the speed.

If we look at a mobile device, if I do this on my phone,

अगर ऐसा अपने फ़ोन पर करूँ तो

the way I would do it is I would click the three dots

मैं कुछ इस तरह से करता हूँ कि ऊपर दाईं तरफ़ इन तीन डॉट्स को दबाता हूँ

in the top right corner and after you click those three dots

और इन तीन डॉट्स को दबाने के बाद

you can choose playback speed.

आप प्लेबैक स्पीड चुन सकते हैं।

From the playback speed menu, I would choose 0.75

वीडियो की स्पीड कम करने के लिये प्लेबैक स्पीड मैन्यू से मैं ०.७५ को चुनूँगा

to slow the video down, and then when I play the video,

और इसके बाद मैं वीडियो प्ले करूँ तो,

hard working person,

"hard working person" (फ़ोन से आवाज़ आती हुई),

you can hear that it's a little bit slower.

You can also press the three dots

and go to playback speed and set the playback speed higher

to 1.25 if you want to challenge yourself

and play the video a little faster.

As being the salt of the Earth.

They were people who worked hard.

I'll pause that.

Let's look at the same thing on the computer.

चलिये इसी को कंप्यूटर में भी समझते हैं।

On the computer, if you want to change the speed,

you would click down here where you see the gear.

यहाँ नीचे इस गियर पर क्लिक करेंगे।

Once you click the gear, you would choose playback speed

गियर पर क्लिक करने के बाद आप प्लेबैक स्पीड चुनेंगे

and you can see, you have the same options

और आप देख सकते हैं कि आपके पास वही विकल्प मौजूद हैं

as what we did on the phone.

When I select 75% or 0.75,

you can use them if you want, but when you,

it is still very understandable

and it is just a good way to slow down an English speaker.

If I click on playback speed

and choose 1.25 it will be faster.

The cool thing about the computer though,

कंप्यूटर की बहुत ही बढ़िया बात ये है कि

is you can choose custom as one of your speeds.

आप किसी भी स्पीड को अपने हिसाब से चुन सकते हैं।

My favorite speed when listening to a video

कोई फ़्रांसीसी वीडियो जिसमें कुछ ज़्यादा ही जल्दी-जल्दी बोल रहे हों उसे मैं ०.८५ की स्पीड से सुनना पसंद करता हूँ।

that's in French that's too fast is 0.85.

We're at the store, everything.

"We're at the store, everything."

Which slows the video down,

इससे वीडियो की स्पीड तो धीमी हो ही जाती है

but still makes it very easy to understand.

पर साथ-ही-साथ बहुत आसानी से समझा भी जा सकता है।

So, the first thing that you can do to help you

तो यूट्यूब पर अंग्रेज़ी वीडियोज़ देखते वक़्त उन्हें आसानी से समझने के लिये आप पहला काम जो आप कर सकते हैं वो है

when you are watching English videos on YouTube

is to either slow the video down,

या तो वीडियो की स्पीड कम कर देना

so you can understand it better,

ताकि आप उसे बेहतर समझ सकें

or speed it up to challenge the speed at which

या स्पीड बढ़ाकर ख़ुद को तेज़ स्पीड में अंग्रेज़ी सुनने और समझने की चुनौती दे सकते हैं।

you can listen to and understand English.

The second thing you can do

यूट्यूब वीडियोज़ बेहतर ढंग से समझने के लिये आप दूसरा काम जो कर सकते हैं वो है

so that you can understand YouTube videos better,

is to turn on captions or subtitles.

कैप्शन या सबटाइटल्स (उपशीर्षक) चालू करना।

Now some people think that you should not

कुछ लोगों को लगता है कि अंग्रेज़ी सीखते वक़्त अंग्रेज़ी सबटाइटल्स नहीं चालू करने चाहिये।

turn on English subtitles when you are learning

the English language.

I, however, have this advice to give,

हालाँकि मेरी सलाह ये है कि

I think you should watch every video once

आपको हर वीडियो एक बार सबटाइटल्स चालू करके देखना चाहिये

with the subtitles on and then you should watch it

a second time with the subtitles off.

और फिर दूसरी बार सबटाइटल्स बंद करके देखना चाहिये।

So let's look at how to turn subtitles, or captions, on

तो चलिये देखते हैं की फ़ोन पर सबटाइटल्स या कैप्शन्स कैसे चालू करते हैं।

using a mobile device.

Again, on the mobile device, you will click the three dots

फ़ोन पर फिर से ऊपर दाईं तरफ़ तीन डॉट्स पर क्लिक करेंगे,

in the top right corner, then you will look for

फिर मैन्यू पर "captions" का विकल्प ढूँढ़ेंगे

the word captions in the menu that pops up,

and when that opens, hopefully it says English.

और जब वो खुल जाए, उम्मीद है वहाँ "English" लिखा होगा।

It might say English auto-generated,

हो सकता है लिखा हो "English (auto-generated)"।

that means that the subtitles were made by YouTube

इसका मतलब है कि सबटाइटल्स यूट्यूब के बनाए हुए हैं, कंप्यूटर के बनाए हुए,

by a computer, but hopefully it says English.

लेकिन उम्मीद है वहाँ "English" लिखा हो।

That means that the person who made the video

इसका मतलब है जिसने वीडियो बनाया है उसने ख़ुद अंग्रेज़ी सबटाइटल्स बनाए हैं।

created word for word English subtitles.

All of my Tuesday videos

अपने सारे मंगलवार वाले वीडियोज़ में मैं ख़ुद अंग्रेज़ी सबटाइटल्स बनाता हूँ।

have word for word English subtitles on them.

Once that's done and you hit play, you will see

ऐसा करने और प्ले दबाने के बाद

आप देखेंगे कि जैसे-जैसे वीडियो चल रहा है, उसपर सबटाइटल्स आते जा रहे हैं।

that as the video plays it now has subtitles on it.

Let me pause this video for a sec.

मैं वीडियो को एक पल के लिये रोक देता हूँ।

Let's look at how to do that on the computer.

चलिये देखते हैं ऐसा कंप्यूटर पर कैसे किया जाता है।

On the computer, you can just click the CC button,

कंप्यूटर पर CC बटन को दबा सकते हैं

which will turn on subtitles,

जिससे सबटाइटल्स चालू हो जाएँगे

but you can also click the gear

लेकिन आप गियर पर क्लिक करके

and then you can go to subtitles

सबटाइटल्स पर जाकर भी

and you can choose the subtitle that you want.

अपने हिसाब से सबटाइटल्स चुन सकते हैं।

You can see here now that English is on.

आप यहाँ देख सकते हैं कि अंग्रेज़ी सबटाइटल्स चालू हैं।

This is a very handy thing to be able to do.

ऐसा करना काफ़ी उपयोगी होता है।

The other thing you can do on a computer

एक और चीज़ जो आप कंप्यूटर पर कर सकते हैं

is you can actually move the subtitles

वो ये है कि सबटाइटल्स को हटाकर

and put them on a different part of the video.

वीडियो पर कहीं और लगा सकते हैं।

This can be helpful if the subtitles are behind something.

ऐसा करना बहुत ही मददगार हो सकता है अगर सबटाइटल्स किसी चीज़ के सामने हैं।

So, the second thing that you can do

तो हर वीडियो से ज़्यादा से ज़्यादा अंग्रेज़ी सीखने के लिये आप दूसरा काम जो कर सकते हैं

to increase the amount of English that you learn

with each video you watch is to turn on subtitles

वो है सबटाइटल्स या कैप्शन्स चालू करना

or captions for the first time that you watch the video

जब आप पहली बार वीडियो देखें

and then watch the video again

और फिर एक और बार सबटाइटल्स या कैप्शन्स बंद करके देखें।

with the subtitles or captions turned off.

The third thing I wanna talk about is how to fast-forward

तीसरी चीज़ जिसके बारे में मैं बात करना चाहता हूँ वो है यूट्यूब पर किसी वीडियो को तुरंत आगे कैसे बढ़ाएँ और पीछे कैसे करें।

or rewind a video quickly

when you are watching it on YouTube.

Sometimes when you are learning English

कभी-कभी ऐसा होता है जब आप किसी यूट्यूब वीडियो से अंग्रेज़ी सीख रहे होते हैं

by watching a YouTube video,

you don't quite understand what the person said

तब आपको समझ नहीं आता कि उस शख़्स ने क्या कहा

and you want to quickly rewind.

और आप तुरंत वीडियो को पीछे करना चाहते हैं।

The way you do that when you are using a mobile device

फ़ोन पर ऐसा करने के लिये

is to simply double tap on the left-hand side of the screen.

स्क्रीन की बाईं तरफ़ दो बार दबाना होता है।

When you double tap, the video will go 10 seconds backwards.

दो बार दबाने पर वीडियो दस सेकेंड पीछे चला जाएगा।

When you tap on the right side of the screen,

जब आप स्क्रीन की दाईं तरफ़ दबाते हैं,

when you double tap on the right side of the screen,

जब आप स्क्रीन की दाईं तरफ़ दो बार दबाते हैं,

the video will go forward 10 seconds.

तो वीडियो दस सेकेंड आगे चला जाएगा।

So if I'm watching a video and I don't quite understand

अगर मैं कोई वीडियो देख रहा हूँ और मुझे समझ नहीं आता उस शख़्स ने अभी-अभी क्या कहा,

what the person just said,

I can quickly double tap and go back 10 seconds.

मैं तुरंत दो बार दबाकर दस सेकेंड पीछे जा सकता हूँ।

On the computer, the way you do this is even cooler I think

कंप्यूटर में ऐसा करने का तरीका और भी लाजवाब है

because you can hit play on the video

क्योंकि आप वीडियो को प्ले कर सकते हैं

and if you don't understand what the person said,

और अगर आपको समझ नहीं आता अभी-अभी उस शख़्स ने क्या कहा

you can just hit the left arrow on the keyboard.

तो आप कीबोर्ड पर बाएँ वाले तीर का बटन दबा सकते हैं।

When you hit the left arrow on the keyboard,

जब आप कीबोर्ड पर बाएँ वाले तीर का बटन दबाते हैं

the video will go back five seconds.

तो वीडियो पाँच सेकेंड पीछे चला जाता है।

I find this to be a lot handier.

ऐसा करना मुझे काफ़ी ज़्यादा उपयोगी लगता है।

So again, when you are watching a video,

फिर से, जब आप कोई वीडियो देख रहे हों

sometimes you will not quite catch,

तो कभी-कभी आपको समझ नहीं आएगा कि उस शख़्स ने क्या कहा

you will not quite understand what the person said,

and a very easy way to go back is to double tap

और पीछे जाने का बहुत ही आसान तरीका है फ़ोन की स्क्रीन पर बाईं तरफ़ दो बार दबाना

the left side of the screen on a phone

or to hit the left arrow key on a computer keyboard.

या कंप्यूटर के कीबोर्ड पर बाएँ वाले तीर का बटन दबाना।

The fourth thing I want to show you how to do

चौथी चीज़ जो मैं आपको दिखाना चाहता हूँ कैसे करें

is how to quickly pause the video

वो है वीडियो को तुरंत कैसे रोकें

so that you can shadow the person

ताकि आप वीडियो में बोलनेवाले शख़्स को दोहरा पाएँ।

who is speaking in the video.

When you shadow someone, it means that you listen

किसी को दोहराने का मतलब होता है कि आप सुनते हैं वो क्या कह रहा है और फिर रोककर

to what they say and then you pause

and you say what they have just said.

वही बोलते हैं जो उसने बिल्कुल अभी-अभी कहा हो।

So this is a great way to use a YouTube video,

न सिर्फ़ किसी यूट्यूब वीडियो से सुनने का अभ्यास करने का ये बढ़िया तरीका है

not just for listening practice,

but also for speaking practice.

बल्कि बोलने का अभ्यास करने का भी।

So, once again, if you are using a mobile device,

अगर आप फ़ोन पर हैं

all you do is you simply tap the screen.

तो स्क्रीन को बस दबाना होता है।

So if I tap the screen it will pause.

अगर मैं स्क्रीन को दबाता हूँ तो ये रुक जाएगा।

I had to double tap there

मुझे दो बार दबाना पड़ा क्योंकि कंट्रोल्स वहाँ पर नहीं थे।

because the controls weren't there,

so if I was listening to this video,

अगर मैं इस वीडियो को सुन रहा होता

I could hit play and then I could repeat,

तो प्ले करके इसे दोहरा सकता,

that was not a very nice thing to do.

"That was not a very nice thing to do."

So this is a great way to shadow the speaker in the video.

बोलनेवाले को दोहराने का ये बहुत ही बढ़िया तरीका है।

On a computer, it's even easier, you just use the space bar.

कंप्यूटर पर तो ये और भी आसान है। आपको बस स्पेस बार का इस्तेमाल करना है।

So you can see the video is playing,

आप देख सकते हैं कि वीडियो चल रहा है।

if I hit space the video is paused.

अगर मैं स्पेस दबाता हूँ तो वीडियो रुक जाएगा।

I can even hit the left arrow key to go back if I need to

अगर मैं चाहूँ तो पीछे जाने के लिये बाएँ वाले तीर का बटन भी दबा सकता हूँ

like we just learned in the last part of this video,

जैसा कि हमने इस वीडियो के पिछले हिस्से में सीखा

and then I can hit the space bar again to start the video.

और वीडियो शुरू करने के लिये फिर से स्पेस बार दबा सकता हूँ।

So it seems like a simple thing

but the ability to pause the video

and to rewind the video are very powerful tools

when you are trying to shadow or trying to repeat after

what the person in the video has said.

The fifth thing I wanna show you only works on a computer,

it doesn't work on a phone.

वो फ़ोन पर काम नहीं करती।

I know most of you watch videos on your phones

मैं जानता हूँ आपमें से ज़्यादातर लोग फ़ोन पर वीडियोज़ देखते हैं

but this trick I'm going to show you

लेकिन ये ट्रिक जो मैं आपको दिखाने जा रहा हूँ,

that you can do the computer is extremely powerful.

जिसे आप कंप्यूटर पर कर सकते हैं, बहुत ही कारगर है।

If you look down here below the video on the right-hand side

अगर आप यहाँ वीडियो के नीचे दाईं तरफ़ नज़र डालें

and if you click the three dots,

you can click open transcript

तो आप "transcript" खोल सकते हैं

and on the right-hand side here

you will see the entire transcript for this video.

What you can then do is you can highlight

फिर आप ये कर सकते हैं कि लेख के किसी हिस्से को हाईलाइट और कॉपी कर सकते हैं

and copy parts of the transcript

and maybe you can put them into Google Translate

और चाहें तो आप उसे गूगल ट्रांसलेट पर डाल सकते हैं

so that you can see what Google translates it to be

ताकि आप देख पाएँ गूगल उसका आपकी भाषा में कैसे अनुवाद करता है।

in your own language.

Or if you want, you can paste it into your own document,

या आप चाहें तो उसे अपने ही किसी दस्तावेज़ में पेस्ट कर सकते हैं।

one second here, I did kind of an odd paste there,

ज़रा रुकिये, मैंने यहाँ थोड़े अजीब ढंग से पेस्ट किया।

you can paste it into your own document

आप उसे अपने दस्तावेज़ में पेस्ट कर सकते हैं

and then you can read the transcript

और फिर उस लेख को वीडियो देखने से पहले पढ़ सकते हैं।

before you watch the video.

The next trick I'm going to show you

अगली ट्रिक जो मैं आपको दिखाने जा रहा हूँ वो भी सिर्फ़ कंप्यूटर पर ही काम करती है।

only works on the computer as well.

I'm sorry about that.

I hope they build more features into the phone app

मुझे उम्मीद है आनेवाले समय में वे फ़ोन ऐप में और खूबियाँ डालेंगे

at some point, but on the computer,

you can share the video and you can share it

और कुछ इस तरह से साझा कर सकते हैं कि वो लिंक सीधे वीडियो के उस हिस्से में जाता है

with a link that goes straight to the part of the video

you are currently watching.

जिसे आप फ़िलहाल देख रहे हैं।

So let's say I'm watching a video

चलिये मान लेते हैं कि मैं कोई वीडियो देख रहा हूँ

and at the four minute and 55 second mark I have a question,

और ४ मिनट ५५ सेकेंड पर मेरे मन में एक सवाल आता है।

I can click share and then I can copy,

मैं "share" पर क्लिक करके कॉपी कर सकता हूँ,

sorry, I can click share and then I can click start at 4:55

माफ़ करियेगा, मैं "share" पर क्लिक करके "start at 4:55" पर क्लिक कर सकता हूँ

and then I can copy that and I could then email

और फिर कॉपी करके किसी को वो लिंक ई-मेल कर सकता हूँ

that link to someone and say, "Hey, I'm watching this video

और उनसे कहा सकता हूँ, "मैं ये वीडियो देख रहा हूँ

"and I don't quite understand

और मुझे समझ नहीं आ रहा कि

"what the speaker is saying at this part."

बोलनेवाला इस हिस्से में क्या कह रहा है।"

The person who gets that email, when they click the link

वो शख़्स जिसे ई-मेल मिलेगा उसके लिंक पर क्लिक करने पर

to YouTube, will go straight to that part of the video.

सीधा वीडियो के उस हिस्से में पहुँच जाएगा।

Here are four more general tips

यूट्यूब से अपनी अंग्रेज़ी सुधारने के लिये ये रहे चार और सुझाव

for how you can use YouTube to improve your English,

and I'm going to talk about reading,

और मैं बात करने जा रहा हूँ पढ़ने, लिखने, सुनने और बोलने के बारे में।

writing, listening, and speaking.

You might think YouTube

आपको लगता होगा कि यूट्यूब सिर्फ़ अपनी सुनने की कला को बेहतर बनाने के लिये है

is only for improving your listening skills,

but you can actually improve all four.

लेकिन असल में आप चारों को सुधार सकते हैं।

For reading, I highly recommend that you do this.

पढ़ने के लिये मैं आपको ये करने की सलाह देता हूँ।

Read the description below the video

वीडियो देखने से पहले उसका नीचे डिस्क्रिप्शन पढ़ें।

before you watch the video.

Oftentimes when someone makes a video,

अक्सर जब कोई वीडियो बनाता है

they will kind of summarize,

तो वो उसका सार लिखता है

or they'll give a little description

या छोटा-सा विवरण देता है वीडियो के नीचे।

of the video below the video.

This can help your mind get ready to watch the video.

इससे आपके दिमाग़ को वीडियो देखने के लिये तैयार रहने के लिये मदद मिल सकती है।

Also, for improving your reading,

और हाँ, पढ़ने में सुधार करने के लिये

don't forget to read some of the comments,

कुछ कमैंट्स पढ़ना न भूलें,

especially if the person who made the video

ख़ासकर कि जब वीडियो बनानेवाले शख़्स ने कमैंट्स का जवाब दिया हो

replies to the comments

and if they are a native English speaker.

और वो अंग्रेज़ी बोलनेवाले हों।

In order to improve your writing,

अपनी लिखाई को सुधारने के लिये

why don't you take the time to leave a comment

क्यों न आप कभी-कभी किसी वीडियो में कमैंट करें?

once in awhile on a video?

Work hard at writing a three or four sentence comment

तीन या चार वाक्यों का अंग्रेज़ी में कमैंट लिखने की भरपूर कोशिश करें

in English and leave that on the video.

और उसे वीडियो में पोस्ट कर दें।

That is just a great way to improve your writing.

अपनी लिखाई को सुधारने का ये बहुत ही बढ़िया तरीका है।

How will you improve your speaking

वीडियो देखते वक़्त आप बोलने को कैसे बेहतर करेंगे?

when you're watching a video?

Well, we talked earlier about shadowing, or repeating,

ख़ैर, हमने पहले दोहराने के बारे में बात की थी।

what the speaker says, this is just a great idea.

ये बहुत ही बढ़िया तरकीब है।

So continue to do that.

तो ये करते रहें।

Watch videos and aim to improve your speaking skills

वीडियोज़ देखें और बोलनेवाले को दोहराकर अपने बोलने की कला को बेहतर करने का लक्ष्य रखें।

by repeating what the speaker is saying.

And, of course, how do you improve your listening skills?

और हाँ, आप अपने सुनने को कैसे बेहतर करेंगे?

Well, you need to listen while you're watching the video.

आपको वीडियो देखते वक़्त उसे सुनना होगा।

Oh, and one more thing, if you have the opportunity,

you should join a live English lesson on YouTube.

Many English teachers on YouTube

बहुत-से अंग्रेज़ी शिक्षक यूट्यूब पर लाइव स्ट्रीम्स के जरिये अंग्रेज़ी सिखाते हैं

teach English via live streams,

where you can interact with the teacher in the chat

जहाँ आप लाइव स्ट्रीम के दौरान शिक्षक से चैट में बातचीत कर सकते हैं।

while the live stream is happening.

So the teacher teaches a lesson

and the students, or the viewers, can chat with the teacher
