English Lesson: Use Reductions to Sound like a Native English Speaker!

As you learn English, you'll want to sound

as much like a native English speaker as you can.

One of the best ways to sound more like a native speaker

अंग्रेज़ी भाषी की तरह अंग्रेज़ी बोलने का एक बेहतरीन तरीका है रिडक्शन का इस्तेमाल करना।

is to use reductions.

Reductions are when we take sentences like,

रिडक्शन उसे कहते हैं जब हम "I want to eat ice cream" जैसे वाक्यों को

"I want to eat ice cream."

and we reduce it to, "I wanna eat ice cream."

कुछ इस तरह छोटा कर देते हैं, "I wanna eat ice cream."

You'll notice that we take the two words, "want to",

आपने ध्यान दिया होगा कि हम दो शब्दों को लेते हैं, जैसे कि "want to" को

and we kind of squish them together into a new word,

और फिर उनको एक साथ मिलाकर एक नए शब्द में तब्दील कर देते हैं,

which isn't really a word, "wanna".

जो असल में कोई शब्द नहीं है।

So we say things like,

हम कहते हैं,

"I want to eat ice cream."

"I want to eat ice cream"

but when we say them out loud we say, "I wanna eat ice cream."

लेकिन असल में जब हम बोलते हैं तो इस तरह बोलते हैं, "I wanna eat ice cream."

So the next reduction I wanna teach you takes

अगला रिडक्शन जो मैं आपको सिखाना चाहता हूँ वो है "let me" का

the words, "let me", and it kind of squishes them

जो इसे एक नए शब्द "lemme" में बदल देता है।

into a new word, "lemme".

I know it looks kind of funny,

मैं जानता हूँ ये थोड़ा अजीब लग रहा होगा

but we do say this.

पर हम वाक़ई में ऐसे बोलते हैं।

We take sentences like, "Let me show you how to do that."

हम "Let me show you how to do that" जैसे वाक्यों को लेते हैं

and we compress it into,

और इन्हें इस तरह छोटा कर देते हैं, "Lemme show you how to do that."

"Lemme show you how to do that."

The next reduction I want to teach you takes

अगला रिडक्शन जो मैं आपको सिखाना चाहता हूँ वो है "going to" का

the words, "going to",

and it squishes them into the word, "gonna".

जो इन शब्दों को "gonna" में बदल देता है।

Again, I do wanna remind you

मैं आपको फिर से बताना चाहता हूँ कि

that the reductions themselves aren't real words,

रिडक्शन ख़ुद कोई असली के शब्द नहीं हैं।

they're just how we say it out loud

जब हम जल्दी-जल्दी बोलते हैं तब हम शब्दों को इस तरह से बोलते हैं।

when we say it quickly.

So I could say that, "Tonight I am going to eat ice cream.",

मैं कह सकता हूँ, "Tonight I am going to eat ice crram."

and the reduced form would be,

इसका छोटा रूप होगा, "Tonight I'm gonna eat ice cream."

"Tonight I'm gonna eat ice cream."

Notice how I took the words, "going to",

ध्यान दीजिये मैंने किस तरह "going to" को

and I squished them into the word, "gonna".

एक-साथ मिलाकर "gonna" में बदल दिया।

So my son sometimes can buy lunch at school,

मेरा बेटा कभी-कभी स्कूल में लंच लेता है

but he doesn't always have money.

पर उसके पास हमेशा पैसे नहीं होते।

So sometimes he will say,

तो वो कभी-कभी कहता है,

"Hey, can you give me money to buy lunch today?"

"Hey, can you give me money to buy lunch today?"

But what he actually says is,

लेकिन असल में वो इस तरह कहता है,

"Hey, can you gimme money to buy lunch today?"

"Hey, can you gimme money to buy lunch today?"

So another reduction is when we take the words, "give me",

तो हम "give me" को एक-साथ मिलाकर "gimme" में बदल देते हैं। ये एक और रिडक्शन हुआ।

and we squish them together to make the word, "gimme".

So I hope you're enjoying the fact

मुझे उम्मीद आपको ये पसंद आ रहा होगा कि

that I'm putting sentences on the screen

मैं वाक्यों को स्क्रीन में लिखकर

and then pretending to squish them,

उन्हें छोटा करने का नाटक कर रहा हूँ।

because I could have just stood in front of a whiteboard

मैं तो वाइटबोर्ड के सामने खड़े होकर भी आपको ये सिखा सकता था।

to teach this lesson,

or I coulda just stood in front of a whiteboard.

So the phrase "could have",

तो अगला रिडक्शन है "could have" का।

we take the words, "could have",

is another reduction when we say this in spoken English,

इसे जब हम अंग्रेज़ी में कहते हैं तो अक्सर "coulda" का इस्तेमाल करते हैं।

we usually say, "coulda".

So sometimes there are things that we must do.

कभी-कभी कुछ ऐसे काम होते हैं जो हमें ज़रूर करने चाहिये।

There are things that we have to do,

कुछ ऐसे भी काम होते हैं जो हमें करने पड़ते हैं।

right now I have to make this video quickly

फ़िलहाल मुझे ये वीडियो जल्दी से बनाना चाहिये क्योंकि सूरज निकल रहा है।

because the sun is coming out.

But if I said this with a reduction I would say,

लेकिन अगर मैं इसे रिडक्शन के साथ कहूँ तो कहूँगा,

"I hafta make this video quickly."

"I hafta make this video quickly."

We take the words, "have" and "to",

हम "have" और "to" शब्दों को

and we squish them again into a new word, "hafta".

एक-साथ मिलाकर एक नया शब्द "hafta" बना देते हैं।

Again, remember these new words are not words

मैं फिर से बताना चाहता हूँ कि ये वो शब्द नहीं हैं जो आप काग़ज़ पर लिखेंगे।

that you would write down.

They are simply how we say the reduction

ये तो बस रिडक्शन हैं जिनका हम जल्दी-जल्दी अंग्रेज़ी बोलने पर इस्तेमाल करते हैं

when we are speaking English quickly

or when we are speaking

या तब जब हम उस तरह से बोल रहे होते हैं जैसे एक अंग्रेज़ी भाषी को बोलना चाहिये।

as a native English speaker would speak.

So sometimes my students won't know the answer

कभी-कभी ऐसा होता हैं कि मेरे शिष्यों को मेरे सवाल का जवाब नहीं पता होता

to the question I'm asking

and they will say, "I dunno."

तो वे कहते हैं, "I dunno."

This is probably one of the most common reductions

"I dunno" शायद अंग्रेज़ी के सबसे आम रिडक्शनों में से है।

in English, "I dunno."

And it's probably one that you've heard before.

और ये शायद आपने पहले भी सुना होगा।

Sometimes they just use the contraction

कभी-कभी लोग बस कॉण्ट्रैक्शन का इस्तेमाल करते हैं, जो है, "I don't know."

and say, "I don't know."

But rarely do they actually say, "I do not know."

लेकिन "I do not know" तक़रीबन कभी नहीं कहते।

They don't usually say the full and proper sentence.

लोग आमतौर पर पूरे और सही वाक्य नहीं बोलते।

Usually I hear, "I don't know." or "I dunno."

मैं आमतौर पर "I don't know" या "I dunno" सुनता हूँ।

Usually it's, "I dunno."

आमतौर पर "I dunno" ही होता है।

So sometimes I will have a student come

तो कभी-कभी ऐसा होता है कि कोई विद्यार्थी अपना पैन नहीं लाया होता

to class without a pen

and they will say they can't do any work

और वो कहता कि वो कोई काम नहीं कर सकता

because they don't have anything to write with.

And I'll usually ask them,

तब मैं आमतौर पर उससे पूछता हूँ कि,

"Don't you have a pen in your locker?"

But usually I'll use a reduction and I'll say,

"Doncha have a pen in your locker?"

"Doncha have a pen in your locker?"

Doncha's kind of a funny one.

"Doncha" थोड़ा अजीब लगता है।

It's when we take, "don't you",

ये तब बनता है जब हम "don't you" को एक-साथ मिलाकर "doncha" बना देते हैं।

and we squish it into, "doncha".

And it sounds a little funny even when I say it right now

ये थोड़ा अजीब अभी भी लग रहा है जब-जब मैं इसे बोल रहा हूँ

but it is a reduction that we use all the time.

लेकिन इस रिडक्शन का हम हमेशा इस्तेमाल करते हैं।

Often I will say to people,

"Doncha have a pen in your locker?

"Doncha have a pen in your locker?"

"Doncha have a pencil in your pencil case?"

"Doncha have a pencil in your pencil case?"

So this next reduction takes the words, "got" and "you",

अगला रिडक्शन है "got" और "you" शब्दों का

and it squishes them into either, "gotya", or "gotcha".

जो इन शब्दों को एक-साथ मिलकर "gotya" या "gotcha" बना देता है।

So a full sentence would be,

एक पूरा वाक्य कुछ इस तरह होगा,

I got you some coffee from the coffee shop,

"I got you some coffee from the coffee shop."

or if I reduce it, I could say,

लेकिन अगर मैं इसे छोटा करके कहूँ तो कह सकता हूँ,

I gotya some coffee from the coffee shop,

"I gotya some coffee from the coffee shop"

or I gotcha some coffee from the coffee shop.

या "I gotcha some coffee from the coffee shop."

So sometimes people go and do something fun

लोग कभी-कभी कुछ मज़ेदार करने जाते हैं।

and when they come back you might say,

उनके लौटने पर आप उनसे पूछ सकते हैं,

"Did you have a good time?"

"Did you have a good time?"

But what you would probably actually say is,

लेकिन असल में आप कहेंगे,

"Didya have a good time?"

"Didja have a good time?"

We take the words, "did" and "you",

हम "did" और "you" को एक-साथ मिलाकर "didja" बना देते हैं।

and we kinda squish them into, "didja".

A weird looking word,

एक अजीब दिखनेवाला शब्द

but it is actually what we say a lot in English.

लेकिन असल में हम इसका अंग्रेज़ी में बहुत इस्तेमाल करते हैं।

Didja have a good time?

"Didja have a good time?"
