English Lesson: Use Reductions to Sound like a Native English Speaker!

As you learn English, you'll want to sound

영어를 배우면서

as much like a native English speaker as you can.

최대한 영어 원어민처럼 말하고 싶을 것입니다. 원어민처럼

One of the best ways to sound more like a native speaker

들리는 가장 좋은 방법 중 하나는

is to use reductions.

축소를 사용하는 것입니다.

Reductions are when we take sentences like,

축소는 우리가

"I want to eat ice cream."

"I want to eat ice cream"과 같은 문장을 취할 때입니다.

and we reduce it to, "I wanna eat ice cream."

"아이스크림 먹고 싶어."

You'll notice that we take the two words, "want to",

우리가 "want to"라는 두 단어를 취해서

and we kind of squish them together into a new word,

which isn't really a word, "wanna".

"wanna"라는 단어가 아닌 새로운 단어로 합쳐놓은 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

So we say things like,

그래서 우리는

"I want to eat ice cream."

"아이스크림 먹고 싶어"와 같은 말을 합니다.

but when we say them out loud we say, "I wanna eat ice cream."

하지만 큰 소리로 말하면 "아이스크림 먹고 싶어"라고 말합니다.

that will help you sound more like a native English speaker.

So the next reduction I wanna teach you takes

그래서 제가 여러분에게 가르치고 싶은 다음 축약은

the words, "let me", and it kind of squishes them

"let me"라는 단어를 취해서

into a new word, "lemme".

"lemme"라는 새로운 단어로 압축합니다.

I know it looks kind of funny,

좀 웃겨 보인다는 건 알지만

but we do say this.

우리는 이렇게 말합니다.

We take sentences like, "Let me show you how to do that."

우리는 " 어떻게 하는지 보여드리겠습니다."와 같은 문장을 사용합니다.

and we compress it into,

"Lemme show you how to do that."

"어떻게 하는지 보여드리겠습니다."로 압축합니다.

The next reduction I want to teach you takes

제가 여러분에게 가르치고 싶은 다음 축약은

the words, "going to",

"going to"라는 단어를 취하여

and it squishes them into the word, "gonna".

"gonna"라는 단어로 압축합니다.

Again, I do wanna remind you

다시 한 번 말하지만

that the reductions themselves aren't real words,

줄임말 자체는 실제 단어가 아니라

they're just how we say it out loud

우리가 빨리 말할 때 큰 소리로 말하는 방식이라는 점을 상기시켜 드리고 싶습니다

when we say it quickly.

So I could say that, "Tonight I am going to eat ice cream.",

그래서 저는 "Tonight I'm going to eat ice cream."이라고 말할 수

and the reduced form would be,

있고 축약형은

"Tonight I'm gonna eat ice cream."

"Tonight I'm gonna eat ice cream."입니다.

Notice how I took the words, "going to",

제가 어떻게 "going to"라는 단어를 취해서

and I squished them into the word, "gonna".

"gonna"라는 단어로 압축했는지 주목하세요.

So my son sometimes can buy lunch at school,

그래서 제 아들은 가끔 학교에서 점심을 살 수

but he doesn't always have money.

So sometimes he will say,

"Hey, can you give me money to buy lunch today?"

But what he actually says is,

So another reduction is when we take the words, "give me",

So I hope you're enjoying the fact

because I could have just stood in front of a whiteboard

So the phrase "could have",

is another reduction when we say this in spoken English,

we usually say, "coulda".

So sometimes there are things that we must do.

There are things that we have to do,

right now I have to make this video quickly

because the sun is coming out.

But if I said this with a reduction I would say,

"I hafta make this video quickly."

We take the words, "have" and "to",

우리는 "have"와 "to"라는 단어를 취하여

and we squish them again into a new word, "hafta".

다시 "hafta"라는 새로운 단어로 압축합니다.

Again, remember these new words are not words

다시 말하지만, 이 새로운 단어는 적어둘 단어가 아님을 기억하십시오

that you would write down.

They are simply how we say the reduction

그들은 단순히

when we are speaking English quickly

우리가 영어를 빨리 말하거나

or when we are speaking

as a native English speaker would speak.

So sometimes my students won't know the answer

to the question I'm asking

and they will say, "I dunno."

This is probably one of the most common reductions

in English, "I dunno."

And it's probably one that you've heard before.

Sometimes they just use the contraction

and say, "I don't know."

But rarely do they actually say, "I do not know."

They don't usually say the full and proper sentence.

Usually I hear, "I don't know." or "I dunno."

Usually it's, "I dunno."

So sometimes I will have a student come

to class without a pen

and they will say they can't do any work

because they don't have anything to write with.

And I'll usually ask them,

But usually I'll use a reduction and I'll say,

Doncha's kind of a funny one.

It's when we take, "don't you",

and we squish it into, "doncha".

And it sounds a little funny even when I say it right now

but it is a reduction that we use all the time.

Often I will say to people,

"Doncha have a pen in your locker?

"Doncha have a pen in your locker?

"Doncha have a pencil in your pencil case?"

"Doncha have a pencil in your pencil case?"라고 말하곤 합니다.

So this next reduction takes the words, "got" and "you",

그래서 이 다음 줄임말에서는 "got"과 "you"라는 단어를 사용하여 두

and it squishes them into either, "gotya", or "gotcha".

단어를 압축합니다. "gotya" 또는 "gotcha".

So a full sentence would be,

I got you some coffee from the coffee shop,

I got you some coffee from the coffee shop,

or if I reduce it, I could say,

줄이면

I gotya some coffee from the coffee shop,

I gotya some coffee from the coffee shop

or I gotcha some coffee from the coffee shop.

또는 I gotcha some coffee입니다.

So sometimes people go and do something fun

그래서 가끔 사람들은 가서 재미있는 일을 하고

and when they come back you might say,

돌아오면

"Did you have a good time?"

"즐거웠어?"라고

But what you would probably actually say is,

말할 수 있지만 실제로는

"Didya have a good time?"

"즐거웠어?"

We take the words, "did" and "you",

"didja"와 "you"라는 단어를

and we kinda squish them into, "didja".

뭉개서 "didja"로 만듭니다.

A weird looking word,

이상해 보이지만

but it is actually what we say a lot in English.

실제로는 영어에서 많이 사용되는 단어입니다.

Didja have a good time?

Didja는 좋은 시간을 보냈습니까?
