Well as you learn English, you learn a lot of rules

and when you listen to native English speakers

you realize that sometimes we break the rules.

you should know about these rules

and you should know how native English speakers break them,

but you should not start breaking these rules yet.

One of the first English rules

पहला नियम जो आप अंग्रेज़ी बोलनेवालों को तोड़ते हुए अक्सर सुनेंगे,

that you will hear native English speakers break quite often

especially children, involves the words, me and I.

ख़ासतौर पर बच्चों को, वो है "me" और "I" शब्दों को लेकर।

You will sometimes hear kids say things like,

आप कभी-कभी बच्चों को कुछ ऐसा कहते हुए सुनेंगे,

"Me and my friends went to the movies last week."

"Me and my friends went to the movies last week."

Technically this is incorrect,

तकनीकी तौर पर ये ग़लत है

but English speakers do say things like that.

लेकिन अंग्रेज़ी बोलनेवाले ऐसा बोलते हैं।

The correct way to say that would be,

इसे कहने का सही तरीका होगा,

"My friends and I went to the movies the other week."

"My friends and I went to the movies the other week."

I even do this sometimes

कभी-कभी मैं भी ऐसा करता हूँ।

I will say things like,

मैं कुछ ऐसा कहता हूँ,

"Me and my colleagues went out for lunch last week."

"Me and my colleagues went out for lunch last week."

And it's incorrect.

और ये ग़लत है।

I should say, "My colleagues and I went out for lunch

मुझे कहना चाहिये, "My colleagues and I went out for lunch the other week."

the other week."

So, don't say this yourself,

आप इसे ख़ुद मत कहें

but you should be ready

लेकिन आपको अंग्रेज़ी बोलनेवालों को समय-समय पर नियम तोड़ते हुए सुनने के लिये तैयार रहना चाहिये

to hear native English speakers break

the rules from time to time

and say things like, "Me and my brother ate all the cookies."

जैसे कि, "Me and my brother ate all the cookies."

You should say, "My brother and I ate all the cookies."

आपको कहना चाहिये, "My brother and I ate all the cookies."

The second example I want to share with you,

दूसरा उदाहरण जो मैं आपसे साझा करना चाहता हूँ

involves the words, can and may.

वो है "can" और "may" शब्दों को लेकर।

Oftentimes in my classroom students will say,

अक्सर मेरी कक्षा में विद्यार्थी कहते हैं,

"Can I go to the bathroom?"

"Can I go to the bathroom?"

And technically this is incorrect.

We use the word, can, to talk about our ability

हम "can" शब्द का इस्तेमाल अपनी कुछ करने की काबिलियत के बारे में बात करने के लिये करते हैं

to do something, not to ask for permission.

न कि इजाज़त माँगने के लिये।

The correct way to say this would be,

इसे कहने का सही तरीका होगा,

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"May I go to the bathroom?"

But I will tell you this,

लेकिन मैं आपको ये भी बताता हूँ।

my students rarely say, "May I go to the bathroom?"

मेरे विद्यार्थी "May I go to the bathroom" तकरीबन कभी नहीं कहते।

When they ask to leave the room to use the washroom

जब वे बाथरूम जाने के लिये पूछते हैं

or the bathroom they most often break the rule

वे ज़्यादातर नियम तोड़कर कहते हैं,

and they say, "Can I go to the bathroom?"

"Can I go to the bathroom?"

Which if you think about it is kind of a funny way

जो कि अगर आप इसके बारे में सोचें तो बाथरूम जाने के लिये पूछने का मज़ाकिया तरीका है

to ask to go to the bathroom,

because all of us have the ability to go to the bathroom.

क्योंकि हम सब के पास बाथरूम जाने की काबिलियत होती है।

We just don't always have permission to leave the classroom

बस ये है कि हमारे पास हमेशा कक्षा छोड़कर बाथरूम जाने की इजाज़त नहीं होती।

to go to the bathroom.

So the third example I wanted to talk to you about

तीसरा उदाहरण जिसके बारे में मैं आपसे बात करना चाहता था

is a mistake that often native English speakers make

वो एक ग़लती है जो अंग्रेज़ी बोलनेवाले लिखते वक्त अक्सर करते हैं

while writing.

They take phrases like could've, would've, should've

वे "could've", "would've" और "should've" जैसे वाक्यों को

and they write, could of, would of, and should of,

"could of", "would of" और "should of" लिखते हैं

which is technically incorrect.

जो तकनीकी तौर पर ग़लत है।

They should be writing the contraction

उन्हें "could have" का छोटा रूप लिखना चाहिये

of could have, which is could've,

would have, which is would've,

जो कि है "could've"।

"Would have" का है "would've"

and should have, which is should've,

और "should have" का है "should've"

but when you listen to me say it,

लेकिन जब आप मुझे इसे कहते हुए सुन रहे हैं,

you will hear that it actually sounds like, "of".

आपको लग रहा होगा कि ये "of" जैसा सुनाई दे रहा है।

I could say something like,

मैं कुछ ऐसा कह सकता हूँ,

"I chose one lottery number wrong

"I chose one lottery number wrong

if I had chosen them all correct I could've won the lottery."

if I had chosen them all correct I could've won the lottery."

So I'm not saying, "could of", I'm saying, "could've",

मैं "could of" नहीं कह रहा। मैं कह रहा हूँ "could've"

which is the contraction of could have.

जो "could have" का छोटा रूप है।

But many native English speakers,

लेकिन बहुत-से अंग्रेज़ी बोलनेवाले,

especially in informal writing,

ख़ासतौर पर अनौपचारिक लिखाई में

like an email, or if they are sending a text,

जैसे कि ई-मेल या अगर वो कोई मैसेज भेज रहे हैं,

will often do this incorrectly.

ऐसी ग़लती अक्सर करते हैं।

there's a lot of geese honking

while I'm trying to make this video.

There's just a lot of geese that are for some reason,

वहाँ पर बहुत ही ज़्यादा बत्तख़ें हैं जो किसी वजह से

hanging out here during the winter.

सर्दी में बाहर घूम रही हैं।

So I know this camera angle is a little too bright for me,

मैं जानता हूँ कि ये कैमरा ऐंगल मेरे लिये कुछ ज़्यादा ही चमकदार है

but I wanted you to be able to see how beautiful it is

लेकिन मैं चाहता था कि आप सब ये देख पाएँ कि कितना ख़ूबसूरत लगता है

when we have snow on the ground and the sun is shining.

जब ज़मीन पर बर्फ़ हो और सूरज चमक रहा हो।

It's just a really nice day,

बहुत ही अच्छा दिन है आज,

a nice January day here in Canada.

अच्छा जनवरी का दिन यहाँ कनाडा में।

But let's move on to the next example.

चलिये चलते हैं अगले उदाहरण पर।

If I was to ask you this question,

अगर मैं आपसे ये सवाल पूछूँ,

"Do you know an English teacher

"Do you know an English teacher

that has a good YouTube channel?"

that has a good YouTube channel?"

You might think it sounds correct,

आपको लग रहा होगा कि ये सही है

and native English speakers would ask a question

और अंग्रेज़ी बोलनेवाले इसी तरह सवाल पूछेंगे

just like that, and they would think it's correct as well,

और उनको भी लगेगा कि ये सही है

but it's technically not.

लेकिन तकनीकी तौर पर ये सही नहीं है।

We wouldn't use the word, "that", in that question,

हम इस सवाल में "that" शब्द का इस्तेमाल नहीं करेंगे।

we would use the word, "who".

हम इस्तेमाल करेंगे "who" शब्द का।

The correct way to ask that question would be,

इस सवाल को पूछने का सही तरीका होगा,

"Do you know an English teacher who has

"Do you know an English teacher who has

a good YouTube channel?"

a good YouTube channel?"

But I will tell you, English speakers may not even be aware

लेकिन मैं आपको बताता हूँ, अंग्रेज़ी बोलनेवालों को तो ये भी नहीं होगा कि वे ग़लती कर रहे हैं

that they are making a mistake

when they ask a question like,

जब वे इस तरह के सवाल पूछते हैं,

"Do you know an English teacher

"Do you know an English teacher

that has a good YouTube channel?"

that has a good YouTube channel?"

We use "that" all the time when we're talking about people

हम "that" का इस्तेमाल हमेशा करते हैं जब हम लोगों के बारे में बात करते हैं

but technically in a sentence like that,

लेकिन तकनीकी तौर पर इस तरह के वाक्य में

if you are talking about a person,

अगर आप किसी शख़्स के बारे में बात कर रहे हैं

you should be using the word, "who".

तो आपको "who" शब्द का इस्तेमाल करना चाहिये।

Do you know an English teacher who has

आप किसी ऐसे अंग्रेज़ी शिक्षक को जानते हैं जिनका एक अच्छा यूट्यूब चैनल है?

a good YouTube channel?

I do.

मैं जानता हूँ।

So the next example involves the words, further and farther.

अगला उदाहरण है "further" और "farther" शब्दों को लेकर।

I often get this question during

शनिवार रात के लाइव अंग्रेज़ी लैसन के दौरान मुझसे ये सवाल अक्सर पूछा जाता है।

my Saturday night live English lessons,

people will say, "When do I use further

लोग पूछते हैं, "मैं कब "further" का इस्तेमाल करूँ

and when do I use farther?"

और कब "farther" का?"

Well technically, you use "farther" when you are talking

ख़ैर, तकनीकी तौर पर, आप "farther" का इस्तेमाल तब करते हैं जब आप दूरियों के बारे में बात कर रहे हों

about distances, or something that is measurable.

या ऐसा कुछ जिसको नापा जा सके।

So for instance, when I drive to my first neighbor,

मिसाल के तौर पर, जब मैं अपने पहले पड़ोसी के घर तक तक गाड़ी चलाता हूँ

if I want to go to my second neighbor,

और अगर मुझे दूसरे पड़ोसी के घर तक जाना हो,

he is one kilometer farther down the road.

वो एक किलोमीटर आगे रहते हैं।

In that situation I would use farther.

इस परिस्थिति में मैं "farther" का इस्तेमाल करूँगा।

And we use "further" when we say things like,

और हम "further" का इस्तेमाल तब करते हैं जब हमको कहना हो,

"Are there any further questions?"

"Are there any further questions?"

So it's not really a distance, or a measurable thing.

ये कोई दूरी या नापने लायक चीज़ नहीं है।

But here's the thing, native English speakers break

लेकिन ये रही एक बात, अंग्रेज़ी बोलनेवाले इन नियमों को हमेशा तोड़ते हैं।

these rules all the time.

In fact, we use further and farther, interchangeably a lot.

यहाँ तक कि हम बहुत बार "further" और "farther" को अदल-बदलकर इस्तेमाल करते हैं।

For instance, I could say, "How much farther do we need to go

मिसाल के तौर पर, मैं कह सकता हूँ, "How much farther do we need to go before we get to the school?"

before we get to the school?"

I could also say, "How much further do we need to go

मैं "How much further do we need to go before we get to the school?" भी कह सकता था।

before we get to the school?"

So in some English-speaking countries this is okay.

अंग्रेज़ी बोलनेवाले कुछ देशों में ये ठीक है।

In Canada, my understanding is,

कनाडा में, मेरी समझ ये है,

and maybe someone in the comments will tell me different,

और हो सकता है कमैंट्स में कोई मुझे कुछ और बताए,

that you can use "further" in almost all situations.

कि आप "further" लगभग हर परिस्थिति में इस्तेमाल कर सकते हैं।

You could say something like,

आप कुछ ऐसा कह सकते हैं,

"It is three kilometers further."

"It is three kilometers further."

or "Are there any further questions?"

या "Are there any further questions?"

This next example is actually a rule

that I broke in a video I made a little while ago

जिसे मैंने फ़्रेज़ल वर्ब्स के बारे में कुछ समय पहले एक वीडियो बनाया उसमें तोड़ा था

about phrasal verbs

and it involves the words, lay and lie.

और ये "lay" और "lie" शब्दों को लेकर है।

Technically, you lay something down

तकनीकी तौर पर कोई चीज़ नीचे रखी जाती है

and a person lies down on a bed.

और कोई शख़्स पलंग पर लेटता है।

So I should say things like, "I lay the book on the table."

तो मुझे कहना चाहिये, "I lay the book on the table."

"I am going to go lie down and take a nap."

"I am going to go lie down and take a nap."

But you know what, I use lay a lot.

लेकिन पता है, मैं "lay" बहुत ज़्यादा इस्तेमाल करता हूँ।

I say things like, "I'm gonna go lay on the couch

मैं कुछ ऐसा कहता हूँ, "I'm gonna go lay on the couch and watch TV."

and watch TV."

I should be saying, "I'm going to go lie down and watch TV."

मुझे कहना चाहिये, "I'm going to go lie down and watch TV."

Or "I'm going to go lie down and take a nap."

या "I'm going to go lie down and take a nap."

But yeah, I break this rule a lot.

लेकिन हाँ, मैं इस नियम को बहुत तोड़ता हूँ।

In fact, I broke this rule in a video previously

यहाँ तक कि मैं इस नियम को पहले एक वीडियो में तोड़ चुका हूँ

and I didn't even know that it was a rule.

So the next example I wanted to talk about involves

the words, "than and then".

And it's a bit of a pronunciation rule that we break.

और ये उच्चारण का नियम है जिसे हम तोड़ते हैं।

You hear me say, than, and you hear me say, then,

आप मुझे "than" कहते हुए सुनते हैं और "then" कहते हुए

but if I say a sentence like this,

लेकिन अगर मैं इस तरह का वाक्य बोलूँ,

"My older brother is older then me."

"My older brother is older than me."

You hear me say, "then",

आप मुझे "then" कहते हुए सुनते हैं

but I'm actually using the word, "than".

लेकिन असल में मैं "than" शब्द का इस्तेमाल कर रहा हूँ।

I think when we speak quickly,

मेरे ख़्याल से जब हम जल्दी-जल्दी बोलते हैं,

especially in my area of Canada,

ख़ासतौर पर कनाडा के इस इलाके में,

we often, when we are comparing people,

अक्सर हम जब हम लोगों की तुलना करते हैं

we are supposed to be saying, "than",

तब हमें "than" कहना चाहिये

and we actually say, "then".

लेकिन हम असल में कहते हैं "then".

Like I am stronger than my younger brother.

जैसे कि "I am stronger than my younger brother."

I'm saying, than, T-H-A-N,

मैं कह रहा हूँ "than", T-H-A-N,

but when I listen to myself,

it sounds like I'm saying, then.

I am definitely not stronger than my younger brother.

So my next example is about using the singular they.

अगला उदाहरण एकवचन "they" के इस्तेमाल के बारे में है।

Sometimes in English we ask questions like,

कभी-कभी अंग्रेज़ी में हम इस तरह के सवाल पूछते हैं,

"Ask your friend what they want for lunch."

"Ask your friend what they want for lunch."

Technically you should be asking,

तकनीकी तौर पर आपको पूछना चाहिये,

"Ask your friend what he or she wants for lunch."

"Ask your friend what he or she wants for lunch."

And people have asked me about this in the comments below.

और लोगों ने मुझसे इस बारे में नीचे कमैंट्स में पूछा है।

It is actually technically correct now

असल में एकवचन "they" इस्तेमाल करना अब तकनीकी तौर पर सही है।

to use the singular they.

You can say things like,

आप कुछ ऐसा कह सकते हैं,

"Ask your friend what they want for lunch."

"Ask your friend what they want for lunch."

It is totally correct, but some people might still think

ये बिल्कुल सही है लेकिन कुछ लोगों को अभी भी लगता होगा

it's incorrect, but it's not.

कि ये ग़लत है लेकिन है नहीं।

You can look this up online.

आप इसे ऑनलाइन देख सकते हैं।

Most dictionaries, in fact, the newspaper,

ज़्यादातर शब्दकोश, यहाँ तक कि अख़बार,

The Washington Post, now accepts the singular they,

द वॉशिंगटन पोस्ट, अब एकवचन "they" को सही अंग्रेज़ी के तौर पर मानता है।

as proper English speech.

So you may have been taught that you should not end

आपको पढ़ाया गया होगा कि अंग्रेज़ी के वाक्य प्रीपोज़ीशन के साथ नहीं ख़त्म करने चाहिये।

an English sentence with a preposition.

A preposition is a word like, in, or with, or at,

प्रीपोज़ीशन "in" या "with" या "at" जैसे शब्द होते हैं

but we do this all the time.

लेकिन ऐसा हम हमेशा करते हैं।

We ask questions like, "Which newspaper is his picture in?"

हम "Which newspaper is his picture in?" जैसे सवाल पूछते हैं।

When technically we should be asking,

जबकि हमें पूछना चाहिये,

"In which newspaper is his picture?"

"In which newspaper is his picture?"

Although that second sentence, though correct,

हालाँकि दूसरा वाक्य, सही तो है,

doesn't sound good to my native English ear.

पर मुझे ठीक नहीं लग रहा।

The first sentence actually sounds better.

पहला वाक्य बेहतर लग रहा है।

"Which newspaper is his picture in?"

"Which newspaper is his picture in?"

So I think you're free to break that rule in spoken English,

मेरे ख़्याल से आप बोलचाल की अंग्रेज़ी में ये नियम तोड़ सकते हैं

but I wouldn't break that rule

लेकिन मैं ये नियम नहीं तोड़ूँगा

if you are doing a writing test,

अगर कोई लिखने का इम्तिहान हो तो

or even if you're doing a speaking test.

या बोलने का इम्तिहान ही क्यों न हो।

But if you're just talking to your friends,

लेकिन अगर आप बस दोस्तों से बातचीत कर रहे हैं,

go ahead and end a sentence with a preposition.

आप बिल्कुल प्रीपोज़ीशन के साथ वाक्य ख़त्म कर सकते हैं।

Well hey, that was nine English rules

that you're sort of allowed to break

when you are speaking English.
