Gifts are one of the nicer things

तोहफ़े देना उन अच्छे कामों में से है जो इस दुनिया में लोग एक दूसरे के लिये करते हैं।

that people do for each other on this planet Earth.

And I really love gifts,

मुझे तोहफ़े बहुत पसंद हैं।

and I love it when people give gifts.

मुझे बहुत अच्छा लगता है जब लोग तोहफ़े देते हैं।

And I love giving gifts myself.

और मुझे ख़ुद भी तोहफ़े देना पसंद है।

And I thought I should do a little English lesson

तो मैंने सोचा कि आप लोगों के लिये मुझे तोहफ़ों के बारे में एक वीडियो बनाना चाहिये।

for you about gifts.

I was out this morning actually buying a gift

आज सुबह मैं अपनी बेटी के लिये क्रिसमस का तोहफ़ा लेने गया था।

for my daughter for Christmas.

a gift for my daughter

where I have a conversation with a native English speaker

जिसमें मैं तोहफ़ा ख़रीदते-ख़रीदते एक अंग्रेज़ी भाषी के साथ बात करता हूँ।

as I buy that gift.

It's just a short little segment,

वो हिस्सा छोटा-सा है

but I think you will enjoy it.

लेकिन मुझे लगता है आपको वो पसंद आएगा।

But anyways, back to the topic.

ख़ैर, चलिये अपने विषय पर वापस चलते हैं।

I wanted to talk about gifts

मैं तोहफ़ों के बारे में बात करना चाहता था

and do a little English lesson on it.

और इस बारे में एक वीडियो बनाना चाहता था।

Let me, first of all, list all of the times

सबसे पहले मैं आपको बताता हूँ हम कनाडा में तोहफ़े कब-कब ख़रीदते हैं फिर चाहे वो कोई जश्न हो या कोई ख़ास दिन या त्यौहार।

or celebrations, occasions, or holidays

where we buy gifts in Canada.

I'm sure these are very similar around the world.

मुझे यक़ीन है दुनिया के दूसरे हिस्सों में भी कुछ ऐसा ही होता है।

In fact, most of them will be the same,

इनमें से ज़्यादातर आपके यहाँ के जैसे ही होंगे

but maybe you don't know all the English words for them.

लेकिन शायद आपको उनके अंग्रेज़ी में नाम न पता हों।

So, number one, we definitely buy gifts

तो सबसे पहले आता है जन्मदिन। हम तोहफ़े ख़रीदते हैं जब किसी का जन्मदिन होता है।

when someone has a birthday.

We buy gifts when people get married.

हम तोहफ़े ख़रीदते हैं जब किसी की शादी होती है।

So, when we go to a wedding we will definitely buy a gift.

जब हम किसी शादी में जाते हैं तब तोहफ़ा ज़रूर ख़रीदते हैं।

We will also buy a gift for someone

हम तब भी तोहफ़ा ख़रीदते हैं जब किसी की सालगिरह हो।

when they have an anniversary.

That's a pretty common time to buy a gift.

ऐसे मौके पर तोहफ़े ख़रीदना आम बात है।

We will buy a gift when someone graduates.

हम तोहफ़ा ख़रीदते हैं जब कोई अपनी ग्रेजुएशन पूरी करता है।

So, when there is a graduation we will buy a gift.

तो जब किसी की ग्रेजुएशन होती है तब हम तोहफ़ा ख़रीदते हैं।

We will buy a gift when there is a birth of course.

किसी बच्चे के जन्म पर भी तोहफ़ा ख़रीदते हैं, ज़ाहिर-सी बात है।

So, if we know someone, a couple, who has had a new baby

अगर किसी जान-पहचान वाले का बच्चा हुआ हो तो

we will definitely buy them a gift then as well.

तब हम उनके लिये भी तोहफ़ा ख़रीदते हैं।

There's a few holidays when we buy gifts.

कुछ ऐसे त्यौहार भी हैं जब हम तोहफ़े ख़रीदते हैं।

We buy gifts of course for Christmas.

हम क्रिसमस पर तोहफ़े ख़रीदते हैं।

So, we give gifts at Christmas.

हम क्रिसमस पर तोहफ़े देते हैं।

We give gifts on Valentine's Day,

हम वैलेंटाइन्स डे पर तोहफ़े देते हैं

which is a very, very nice romantic holiday in February.

जो कि फरवरी में होने वाला एक रोमांटिक हॉलीडे है।

And we usually give gifts

और आमतौर पर मदर्स डे और फ़ादर्स डे पर भी तोहफ़े दिये जाते हैं।

on Mother's Day and on Father's Day.

And I think one other time when we would give a gift

एक और मौक़ा जिसमें हम तोहफ़े देते हैं, उसे कहते हैं "housewarming gift."

is what's called a housewarming gift.

So, if someone buys a new house or apartment

अगर कोई एक नया घर या अपार्टमैंट ख़रीदता है

and they have a party to show everyone their new place,

और उसे दिखाने लिये पार्टी रखता है

we will sometimes bring them a housewarming gift.

तो हम उनके लिये "housewarming gift" ला सकते हैं।

So, those I think are most of the times in life

ज़्यादातर हम ज़िंदगी में इन्हीं मौक़ों पर तोहफ़े ख़रीदते हैं।

when we would buy someone a gift.

But how do you know what to get someone?

लेकिन ये कैसे पता करें कि क्या लेना है?

Well, there's a couple ways

दो तरीके हैं जिनसे आप पता लगा सकते हैं कि तोहफ़े में किसी के लिये क्या लेना चाहिये।

to figure out what gift to get someone.

One way is to just be a really good listener.

एक तरीका ये है कि आपको ध्यान से सुनना चाहिये।

So, I'm going to challenge you

मैं आपको चुनौती देता हूँ कि आप ध्यान दें।

as English learners to pay attention.

When you pay attention to someone

जब आप किसी पर ध्यान देते हैं,

it means you listen to what they're saying

तो इसका मतलब होता है कि आप उनकी बातें सुन रहे हैं

so you can figure out the things that they like.

ताकि आप पता कर सकें उन्हें क्या पसंद है।

So, sometimes for a week or so before someone has a birthday

किसी के जन्मदिन के लगभग एक हफ़्ते पहले

you may need to pay attention to what they are saying

आपको उनकी बातों पर देना चाहिये

so that you can figure out.

When you figure out something it means that you

जब आप किसी चीज़ को "figure out" कर लेते हैं, इसका मतलब होता है कि आपको कुछ पता चल जाता है या आप कुछ खोज लेते हैं।

determine or discover something.

So, you need to figure out what they want.

तो आपको पता करना पड़ेगा उन्हें क्या चाहिये।

Once you've figured out what gift to get

जब आप पता कर लें आपको तोहफ़े में क्या लेना है,

you need to go obviously and buy the gift.

ज़ाहिर है कि तब आपको जाकर तोहफ़ा ख़रीद लेना चाहिये।

A lotta times these days people buy gifts online,

आजकल लोग तोहफ़े अक्सर ऑनलाइन ख़रीदते हैं

but you may go to a store and buy a gift.

पर आप दुकान पर जाकर भी तोहफ़े ख़रीद सकते हैं।

Another option instead of buying a gift

आप तोहफ़ा ख़रीदने के बजाय

is you could make a gift.

उसे बना भी सकते हैं।

In my family we try to make a gift

हमारे परिवार में हम कोशिश करते हैं कि क्रिसमस पर कुछ ख़रीदने के बजाय एक-दूसरे के लिये तोहफ़े ख़ुद बनाएँ।

for each other at Christmas instead of buying something.

This could be somewhat hard if you're like me,

ये थोड़ा मुश्किल हो सकता अगर आप मेरे जैसे हैं

and you're not very good at making things.

और आप कुछ बनाने में बहुत अच्छे नहीं हैं।

But besides buying a gift or making a gift,

तोहफ़े ख़रीदने या बनाने के अलावा

you can also do something called regifting.

आप "regifting" भी कर सकते हैं।

When you regift it means you take a gift

जब आप "regift" करते हैं, उसका ये मतलब होता है कि आप पिछले जन्मदिन या क्रिसमस पर आपको मिले तोहफ़े को,

that someone else gave you for a past birthday

or from a past Christmas,

and if it's something that you didn't use

अगर आपने उसे इस्तेमाल नहीं किया है,

you just wrap it up and you give it to a new person.

रैप करके किसी और को दे सकते हैं।

Once you have the gift you usually wrap the gift,

तोहफ़ा ख़रीद लेने के बाद उसे आमतौर पर रैप किया जाता है।

and you wrap the gift using wrapping paper.

उसे रैपिंग पेपर से रैप किया जाता है।

If you want an easier method,

अगर आपको थोड़ा आसान तरीका चाहिये,

what I like to do is to put the gift in a gift bag

मैं ये करता हूँ कि तोहफ़े को गिफ़्ट बॉक्स में डालकर

and you just put some tissue

उसके ऊपर कुछ रंग-बिरंगे काग़ज़ के टुकड़े लगा देता हूँ।

on top that's a different color.

So, those are the two options.

तो ये थे दो तरीके।

You can wrap the gift, or you can put it in a gift bag.

आप तोहफ़े को रैप कर सकते हैं या उसे एक गिफ़्ट बॉक्स में डालकर दे सकते हैं।

When you give a gift

तोहफ़े के साथ-साथ आप कार्ड भी ज़रूर देना चाहेंगे।

you will most likely also want to give a card.

So, if you are giving a birthday gift,

अगर आप जन्मदिन का तोहफ़ा दे रहे हैं

you probably want to give a birthday card.

तो आपको जन्मदिन का कार्ड देना चाहिये।

If you are giving a Valentine's Day gift,

अगर आप वैलेंटाइन्स डे का तोहफ़ा दे रहे हैं

you probably want to give a Valentine's Day card as well.

तो आपको साथ में वैलेंटाइन्स डे का कार्ड भी देना चाहिये।

Same with Father's and Mother's day,

फ़ादर्स डे और मदर्स डे पर भी ऐसा ही करना चाहिये।

you will probably want to give a card

आपको इन मौक़ों पर भी कार्ड देना चाहिये।

for that occasion as well.

And then there's only two things left to do.

इस सबके बाद करने के लिये सिर्फ़ दो काम बचे हैं।

You need to give the gift to someone,

आपको तोहफ़ा देना होगा

and then you get to watch them open it.

और आप उन्हें तोहफ़े को खोलते हुए देख पाएँगे।

Often times when our kids are opening gifts,

अक्सर जब हमारे बच्चे तोहफ़े खोलते हैं,

especially for their birthdays,

ख़ासकर कि अपने जन्मदिन पर,

we also take pictures of the occasion.

तब हम तस्वीरें भी लेते हैं।

So, that was a little lesson about giving gifts in English.

तो ये था अंग्रेज़ी में तोहफ़ों के बारे में एक छोटा-सा वीडियो।

So, let's head into the jewelry store,

and let's see if I can find some earrings for my daughter.

और देखते हैं कि मुझे अपनी बेटी के लिये कान की बालियाँ मिलती हैं या नहीं ।

Could you show me where the earrings are (laughs)?

क्या आप मुझे बता सकती हैं कान की बालियाँ कहाँ मिलेंगी?

- [Employee] Of course.

They're all these different styles here.

ये सब अलग-अलग स्टाइल की हैं।

So, I think I'm going to look at these earrings here.

This is a good one.

ये अच्छी है।

I think I will buy this one.

मुझे लगता है मैं यही ख़रीदूँगा।

Let's head over to the checkout.
