English Prepositions: BELOW & UNDER

Thanks for clicking and welcome to this lesson on two very tricky prepositions, and those

are: "below" and "under".

تحت و أدنى

So, we are going to look at the meanings of these prepositions and we're going to look

سوف نعرف معنى هاتين الكلمتين وسوف نرى

at some examples, some contexts so that you can better understand and more confidently

بعض الأمثلة وكيف تكون في سياق الكلام ليسهل فهمها أكثر وتكون واثقاً

use them when you're talking about the physical position of something, or maybe not necessarily

بإستخدامهما في موقف ما أو لحظة ما وليس بالضرورة

even the physical position of something, but if you're measuring something, for example.

أن يكون موقف ما لكن قد يكون في قياسات لشيء ما على سبيل المثال

So, when I started the video, I asked: Am I below the board or am I under the board?

عندما بدأت هذا الفيديو سألت هل أنا أدنى اللوحة أم تحتها ؟

Well, it's actually both.

في الحقيقة كلاهما

So, "below" and "under" can both simply mean lower than.

إذاً ببساطة أدنى أو تحت كلاهما يعنون نفس المعنى وهو " أقل من أو أسفل "

So: "Hey, where is the..." whatever it is.

مثلاً " أين الـ ... "؟ وليكن

-"Where's my mug?

أين زمزميتي ؟

Where's my cup?"

أين كأسي ؟

-"Oh, it's...

" إنه ...

It's below the cabinet."

إنه أدنى الخزانة

Or: "Oh, it's under the cabinet."

أو إنه تحت الخزانة

Okay?

فهمت ذلك ؟

So, basically if the cabinet is up here and your mug is here, or here, or here, or here

في الأساس إذا كانت الخزانة في الأعلى والزمزمية هنا أو هنا أو هنا أو هنا

- it's below the cabinet or it's under the cabinet, just lower than the cabinet.

إنه أدنى الخزانة أو تحت الخزانة إنه أقل من الخزانة أو أسفلها

Same with: "It's under the sink."

مثل أيضاً : إنه تحت المغسلة

"It's under the sink" or "below the sink", it just means lower than.

إنه تحت المغسلة أو أدناها . إنها تعني أقل من او أسفل

So, she is flying on a broom and she's flying over a city.

هي تحلق على مكنسة كما هو واضح وفوق المدينة

The city is under her.

والمدينة من تحتها

The city is below her.

المدينة أدناها

It's lower than her, because she's in the air.

أو المدينة أسفلها أو أقل منها , لأنها محلقة في الجو

Right? Okay.

صحيح ؟ حسناً

And she might be, like, flying over clouds, so the clouds could be below her or under

ومن الممكن أن تكون محلقة فوق الغيوم والغيوم من تحتها

her as well.

أو الغيوم أدناها

Next, let's look at "below".

التالي لنلقي نظرة على " أدنى "

Some... Two specific instances where you must use "below", so for example, not directly under.

حالتين محددتين يجب علينا إستخدام " أدنى " , على سبيل المثال ليس بالضرورة أن يكون أدناه تماماً

So if something, like I said, is...

كما قلت اذا كان شيء

If you have something here like a shelf, and you have an object here, like this marker,

اذا كان لديك رف هنا ولديك شيء ما مثل قلم السبورة

for example, the marker is not, you know, directly under the shelf, so we say it's below.

على سبيل المثال , قلم السبورة ليس تحت الرف تماماً لهذا نقول " أدنى"

So, for example: "We stopped 100 meters below the top of the mountain."

على سبيل المثال : " لقد توقفنا على بعد 100 متر أدنى قمة الجبل

If we're climbing the mountain and then we stop to take a break, maybe there's a cabin

إذا كنا نصعد لأعلى قمة الجبل وتوقفنا لأخذ استراحة من الممكن وجود كوخ

where you can go in, have some hot chocolate, prepare to climb the rest of the mountain,

حيث يمكنك الدخول إليه واحتساء الشوكولاته الساخنه, وتستعد لصعود بقية الجبل

you can say: "Oh, we stopped 100 meters below the top of the mountain."

يمكنك أن تقول : " توقفنا 100 متر أدنى قمة الجبل " .

You're not under the mountain.

أنت لست تحت الجبل

Right?

صحيح؟

You're on the mountain, and you're below the top of it.

أنت في الجبل , لكنك أدنى القمة لم تصل اليها بعد

Next, for measurements.

حسناً , التالي لدينا هنا استعمالها مع القياسات

Now, you must use "below" when you're talking about measurements.

يجب عليك استخدام أدنى عندما تريد التحدث عن القياسات

So, for example: "It's 5 below 0."

على سبيل المثل هنا : " خمسة أدنى الصفر "

So if you're talking about degrees Celsius, or...

إذا كنت تتكلم عن درجات الحرارة بالسيليسوس أو ...

Well, not in Fahrenheit.

ليس بالفهرنهايت

Degrees Celsius, basically, you can say: "It's 5 below 0."

بدرجة الحرارة سليسيوس يمكنك القول " خمسة أدنى الصفر "

Not: "5 under 0.", "5 below 0."

ليس تحت الصفر يقصد بـ " under "

Another example: "We are at 150 feet below sea level."

مثال آخر : " نحن أدنى سطح البحر بـ 150 قدم" .

If you're talking about someone's scores in their class, you can say: "Her grades" or

إذا كنت تتكلم عن درجات شخص ما في الشعبة يمكنك القول " درجاتها " أو

"His grades are below average."

" درجاته أدنى من متوسط الدرجات "

Or you can perform below expectations-right?-if you're measuring performance, for example.

أو يمكنك القول آداءة أدنى من المتوقع منه أو منها صحيح ؟ -اذا كنت تريد عمل قياس لآداء ما على سبيل المثال

Next, for "under", basically if anything is covered, it, you know...

تالياً : لـ " تحت " ببساطة إذا كان أي شيء مغطى ....

You have to use "under".

يجب عليك استخدام " تحت"

So, for example: "The cat is under the bed."

على سبيل المثال " القطة تحت السرير "

Right?

صحيح ؟

So he's under the bed, he's covered.

إذا القطة تحت السرير , مغطاة بالسرير

Or with a blanket, for example, if a blanket is covering you, you are under the blanket.

أو باللحاف على سبيل المثال , إذا كنت مغطى باللحاف أنت " تحت " اللحاف

I am wearing a t-shirt under my jacket, under my blazer.

كما أنا لابس قميص تحت الجاكيت , تحت سترتي

Okay?

مفهوم ؟

Because the t-shirt is covered, so my t-shirt is under my jacket, under my blazer.

لأن القميص مغطى, إذا قميصي تحت الجاكيت , تحت سترتي

And finally: "under" can be used as a synonym for "less than".

وفي النهاية : " تحت " يمكن استخدمها كمرادف لـ " أقل من "

So, for example: "He's under 18."

على سبيل المثال:"إنه تحت الـثمانية عشرة سنة " .

Under 18 years old.

"تحت الـثمانية عشرة سنة " .

He's less than 18 years old.

هو أقل من ثمانية عشرة سنة

"There were under 5 people at the office today."

الموجودون اليوم في المكتب اليوم تحت خمسة أشخاص

So, there were less than 5 people at the office today.

الموجودون اليوم في المكتب أقل من خمسة أشخاص

All right, so let's do some quick practice.

حسناً , هيا بنا لنفعل تمرين

I have a grammar book.

لدي كتاب القواعد

I have a novel that I'm reading right here.

ولدي الرواية التي اقراها الآن

Where is the grammar book?

أين هو كتاب القواعد ؟

Well, my grammar book is under my novel.

كتابي القواعد تحت الرواية

Right?

حسناً ؟

Because it's touching directly, so it's directly under.

لأنه ملاصق تماماً , لذا إنه تحته مباشرة ملتصق .

Okay?

حسناً ؟

Now, where is my grammar book?

والآن أين هو كتاب القواعد ؟

My grammar book is under the novel.

كتابي القواعد تحت الرواية

It's also below the novel, because it is lower than the novel.

وأيضاُ أدنى الرواية , لأنه أقل منها وهي أعلاه

All right?

حسناً ؟

So, just to give you another concrete example of how to use these two very tough prepositions.

حسناً أعطيكم مثال حاد لفهم طريقة استعمال هاتين الكلمتين ( حروف الجر )

So I don't want to complicate it, so I'll just repeat it one more time.

لا أريد أن أصعبها , سوف أعيد مرة أخرى

Lower than, "below" or "under".

أقل من , "أدنى" أو "تحت"

Not directly under, use "below", like if you're climbing a mountain, for example.

ليس تحته مباشرة تستخدم " أدنى " , إذا كنت تتسلق أو تصعد جبل , على سبيل المثال

For measurements, like you're talking about how cold it is, so temperature, how, you know,

للقياسات , كأن تتحدث عن برودة الطقس , هي درجة حرارة اذاً أو ...

sea level, anything related to measurements, use "below", "below", "below".

سطح البحر , أي شيء له علاقة بالقياسات , استخدم " أدنى " , "أدنى" , "أدنى"

And for "under", lower than, like I said, "below" and "under" for both.

بالنسبة لـ "تحت ", أقل من كما قلت "أدنى","تحت" لكلاهما

If it's covered with a blanket, for example, or you're wearing a jacket and you're covering

اذا كان مغطى بلحاف على سبيل المثال أو كنت تلبس سترة أو جاكيت تصبح مغطى به

yourself, please use "under".

من فضلك استخدم "تحت"

So, for example: In the wintertime in Canada, you know, if you wear a jacket and if you

wear a light jacket, one of your friends or family members might say: "Oh, you look like

خفيفة , من الممكن أن يقول لك أحد من الاًصدقاء أو العائلة: "أنت تبدو مممم "

you will be cold."

سوف تتجمد من شدة البرد

You can say: "Don't worry.

يمكنك القول : "لا عليكم "

Don't worry.

لا عليكم

I'm wearing five shirts under this." Okay?

أنا أرتدي 5 ملابس داخليه تحته , مفهوم ؟

So, if you're wearing a lot of layers, a lot of shirts, you can say: "I'm wearing four

إذا كنت تلبس الكثير من الطبقات , المزيد من الملابس الداخليه , تستطيع القول , أنا ألبس أربعه

layers under my jacket or under my shirt, so don't worry, I'm warm."

طبقات من الملابس الداخليه تحت الجاكيت أو تحت القميص, لذا لاعليكم أنا أشعر بالدفئ

And finally, less than.

وأخيراً , أقل من

So, he's under 18, there were under 5 people at the office today.

هو أقل من 18 سنة , كان يوجد أقل من خمسة أشخاص متواجدون بالمكتب اليوم.
