Now the first word I want to talk to you about is this one.

1번으로 소개하고 싶은 단어는 바로 이 단어 입니다.

The word is choir.

이 단어는 '콰아이어'입니다.

Choir.

'콰아이어'

The next word, number two, is this one.

2번째 단어는요

It's difficult because we've got the er sound twice.

er 사운드가 두 번이나 들어가서 넘나 어려운

Rural, rural.

'루어러얼' '루어러얼'

(mumbles), it doesn't sound nice when I say it.

저도 그렇게 발음이 잘 되는 것 같진 않아요

Rural.

'루어뤄얼'

Now the next one, number three, is actually a place name.

자, 3번째 단어는 사실 지명인데요

It's a county in the UK.

영국의 한 지역입니다

Is Worcestershire.

바로 Worcestershire입니다.

Worcestershire.

Worcestershire

So people want to say Worcestershire, or Worcestershire,

그래서 사람들은 '워어세스터셰어' 또는 '워어세스터샤이어'로 발음하고 싶으신가봐요

but it should be woosta, woosta, Worcestershire.

하지만 '워엇스타 '워엇스타' 즉, '워엇스타쉐어'로 발음되어야 하죠.

How do we pronounce, and that brings me on to my next one,

이걸 발음해 보셨으니, 다음 단어로도 연결이 되는데요,

number four, which is this.

4번째 단어를 소개합니다

Is it shire, is it shire, or is it shire?

'시어'일까요 '샤어' 일까요 '셔'일까요?

The answer is it can be all of them.

사실 어떻게 발음해도 다 정답이에요!

Officially it should be shire, or shire,

원래는 '샤어' 또는 '셔'로 발음되어야 합니다.

but a lot of people blend the two and say shire.

그런데 많은 분들이 이 두개를 섞어 '쉐어'라고 발음하시죠.

That's what my family and I say.

저나 제 가족도 그렇게 발음해요.

We're from Bedfordshire.

저희는 '베드포드쉐어' 출신이에요.

I'm living in Cambridgeshire.

저는 '캠브릿지쉐어'에 살아요.

The next one, number five, is prelude, prelude.

5번째 단어는 '프렐류드' '프렐류드' 입니다.

A lot of people want to say prelude, or prelude,

많은 분들이 '프릴류드' 또는 '프리루드'로 읽고 싶으신 것 같은데요

but it should be prelude.

하지만 '프렐류드' 입니다

The next one, number six, are we on number six?

6번째 단어는요, 아, 우리 6번째 맞죠?

Yes.

아 맞네용

The next one, number six,

6번째 단어는

is a word that most native people will know

대부분의 영어 원어민들이 알아야 하지만

but when I was teaching Spaniards English

제가 스페인분들께 영어 가르칠 때

they never knew how to pronounce it

어떻게 발음하실지 모르시더라구요

because it's quite a complicated spelling.

스펠링이 복잡해서 일겁니다

It's this one.

바로 이겁니다

How do we say it?

어떻게 발음할까요?

It's squirrel, squirrel.

'스ㅋ꿔럴' '스ㅋ꿔럴' 입니다

And that irrel, irrel,

이 '어얼뤌' '어얼뤌' 발음이

people with Chinese as their mother tongue,

중국어가 모국어이신 분들께는

that might be a really difficult one

진짜 어려울 수 있어요

because ir and ul often get confused.

왜냐하면 '얼' 과 '울'이 가끔 헛갈리기도 하거든요.

So squirrel, squirrel.

'스꿰어오롤' '스꿰어오롤' 로 발음하셔요

Two syllables there.

음절이 두 개에용

The next one, number seven.

7번째 단어는요

This one.

바로 이겁니다

We've got that er sound again.

er 사운드가 다시 나왔네용

Juror, juror.

'쥬어뤄' '쥬어뤄'

Also people suffer with the juror, er sound.

사람들이 '쥬-얼' '얼' 사운드를 힘들어해요

Juror.

'쥬어뤄'

It's a very complicated mouth movement

입의 움직임이 꽤 복잡해 보이지만

that you have to make.

이렇게 하셔야 합니다

Er.

'얼'

I almost stick my chin when I say it.

저는 이 단어 발음할 때 턱이 거의 안 움직이거든요

Juror, juror.

'쥬어뤄' '쥬어뤄'

Beautiful angle there.

The next one, number eight.

8번째 단어는

Spherical, spherical.

'스풰리컬' '스풰리컬'

It's a very satisfying one to say, isn't it?

발음할 때 기분 좋지 않으세요?

Spherical.

'스풰리컬'

A lot of people say spherical

많은 분들이 '스피리컬'로 발음하시는데요

because we have a sphere and a sphere is spherical.

왜냐면 '스피어'라는 단어에서 '스페리컬'이 파생됐거든요

But it should be eh, not ir, eh.

하지만 '이어'가 아니라 '에'로 발음되어야 해요

Spherical.

'스풰리컬'

Number nine, this one.

9번째 단어는요

Frenchies, where are you, because this one is yours.

프랑스 분들 어디 계십니까 당신 언어에서 왔잖아요

Valet, valet.

'발레' '발레'

But you will hear some people saying valet, valet.

그치만 어떤 분들이 '발렛' '발렛' 이라고 발음하시는 걸 들어 봤을거에요

That pronunciation is accepted by some dictionaries

어떤 사전에서는 저 발음이 가능하다고도 할 수 있겠지만

but come on, guys.

하아.. 쫌

Let's say valet.

'발레'라고 합시다아아

Number 10, pronunciation.

10번째 단어구요

(laughing)

흫흫-흫ㅎㅎ

Now this one is a really common mistake.

이건 정말 사람들이 많이 하는 실수인데요

Pronunciation, how you pronounce something.

'프러넌시에이션' 당신이 어떤 단어를 발음할 때요,

A lot of people will say pronunciation.

많은 분들이 '프로나운시에이션'이라고 하시더라구요

Sometimes I get accused of saying pronunciation in my videos

가끔 저도 '프로나운시에이션'이라고 제 비디오에서 말한 적이 있어서 뭐라고 하시는 분들도 계셨는데요

but really it is just my accent.

이건 제 억양 습관이랄까요

Pronunciation, nunciation.

'프로늰시에이션' '늰시에이션'

I say it so quickly and people like to pick at me

제가 너무 빨리 발음해서

and wait for me to make a mistake

제가 실수하기만을 기다리시는 분들이 바로 지적해 주시더라구요

because I'm meant to be correct all the time.

왜냐면 저는 절대로 틀리면 안되잖아요 흫

Number 11.

11번째 단어입니다

This one I've heard so many different pronunciations

이 단어를 엄청 다양하게 발음하시더라구요

that I honestly before researching this video

솔직히 말씀드리면, 이 비디오를 제작하기 전엔

didn't know which one was right.

어떻게 발음하는게 맞는지 저도 모르겠더라구요

It should be mauve, mauve.

'모우브' '모우브'여야 합니다

Many people will say mauve or mauve

'마우브' 나 '모오브'로 발음하는 분들도 많은데요

but it should be mauve.

'모우브'여야 합니다

The next one, number 12.

12번째 단어입니다

Regime, regime.

'뤠이짐' '뤠짐'

Which one should it be?

어떤 게 맞을까요?

It should be regime.

'뤠이짐'입니다

I've got a new regime.

내가 새로운 '뤠이짐'을 갖게 되었지

The next one, number 13, is this one.

13번째 단어는 바로 이겁니다

Now because it comes from French

이 단어는 프랑스어에서 왔기 때문에

it should be pronounced niche with a shh,

'니싀'는 끝소리가 '싀-'로 발음되어야 해요

a soft shh sound at the end, unvoiced.

소리 끝에 무성음으로, 소프트 shh 소리가 나야 하죠.

But many people will pronounce it niche,

근데 많은 분들이 '뉘치'라고 하시거든요

which sounds so ugly compared to niche,

근데 '니쉬'에 비해 너무 못난 발음이에용

which is so beautiful and airy and breathy,

'니쉬'라고 발음하는게 더 아름답고 바람 소리도 나면서 숨소리도 섞이잖아요

and then niche.

그래서 '뉘취'라고요?

Niche?

엥? '뉘취'?

Yes, niche!

아, '네취' !

The next one, number 14,

14번째 단어는요

is more a confusion between two words.

어떤 단어와 많이 혼동하시는데요

It's moot, moot.

바로 '뭇트' '뭇트' 입니다

It's a matter about which

사실 이 문제는

there may be discussion or confusion

말도 많고 혼란스러울 수 있는데요

but people generally confuse it with mute,

사람들은 '뮷트'와 많이 혼동하시는 것 같아요

which means silent, not speaking, not making a noise.

이 단어는 말소리나 소음을 내지 않고 조용하다는 뜻인데요

Moot, mute.

'뭇트' '뮷트'

The next one, this one.

다음 단어는요, 바로 이겁니다

You might ask for a nice beer.

맛있는 맥주 한 잔 달라고 하실때요

It's draught.

'드라프트'라고 하셔야죠

I used to work in a pub

제가 맥주집에서 일한 적이 있는데요

and I heard people ask for a draught beer a couple of times,

몇 번 '드라우트' 비어 달라고 하신 분들도 있었어요

but it's a draught, draught beer.

이건 '드라프트' '드라프트' 맥주라고 하셔야 해요

Number 16, this one.

16번째 단어입니다

Yes, in my lifetime I have heard someone say albeit.

제가 살면서 '알베이트'라는 발음을 들어본 적이 있지요

Albeit?

And I was thinking albeit?

'알베이트'?

'알베이트'? 그게 뭐지?

What do they mean?

무슨 말이지? 한참 생각했다니까요

Turns out it's albeit, albeit.

'올비이트' 였던거에요 '올비이트'

The next one, and this is one that my Italian ex-flatmate

다음 단어는, 제 이탈리안 플랏메이트가

used to pronounce incorrectly all the time.

맨날 잘못 발음하던 단어에요

He used to say lettuce.

'렉튜우스'라고 발음했었어요

(laughing)

으흫흫흫ㅎ

"Lettuce in the house!"

우리집에 '렉튜우스' 있뙇

No, it's lettuce, lettuce.

아니에요, '레티스' '레티스'라고 하셔야죠

Yeah, confusing spelling there.

네에, 스펠링이 잘못했죠

The next one,

다음 단어는요,

a word that you might not use in everyday conversation,

일상 대화에서 잘 사용하진 않지만

but it's an interesting one because it's such a bizarre

쫌 재밌는 단어에요 왜냐하면

spelling and pronunciation difference,

스펠링과 발음이 너무나 다르거든요

colonel, not colonel.

'커늘'입니다 '콜로널' 아니고요

Colonel.

'커늘'

Why, why?

도대체 왜 때문이죠?

I'm sure there's a fabulous reason behind it, actually.

뭔가 엄청난 이유가 있겠죠?

(뾰리롱)

I just researched it.

It was colonel and then colonel

제가 그래서 조사를 해봤죠

원래는 '콜로널' 이었다가 '커러널' 이었다가

and that's where the modern pronunciation came from.

현대에 와서 발음이 이렇게 바뀌었죠

Colonel, just a squashed up version of colonel.

'커러널'을 빠르게 발음하다보니 '커늘'이 된거죠

The next one, number 19, is another place name

19번째 단어도 지명인데요,

and this one is important because we have GMT.

중요한 단어죠 왜냐? 우리에게 GMT(그리니치 표준시)가 있으니까요

I hear a lot of people saying Greenwich

많은 분들이 '그린위치'라고 발음하시더라구요

and I can totally understand why you would say that,

왜 그렇게 발음하시는지 완전 이해돼요

because reading it, Greenwich, it makes sense.

왜냐면, 한 번 읽어보세요 '그린' + '위치' 라고 할 수 있으니 틀린 게 아니거든요

But no, it's Greenwich, Greenwich.

근데 아니에요. 이건 '그뤠뉘취' '그레뉘치'라고 해야 해요

The next one, infamous.

다음 단어는요, '인퍼머스' 입니다

I've heard a couple of people pronounce it infamous,

몇 분이 '인페이머스'라고 발음하시던데요

which is incorrect.

땡 틀렸습니다

Infamous.

'인퍼머스'

Number 20, this one.

20번쨰 단어는요

I used to pronounce this incorrectly.

저도 이 단어를 잘못 발음했었어요

This one is gauge,

바로 '게이쥐'입니다

but it looks like it should be pronounced gorg.

근데 '고올쥐'라고 발음하게 생기지 않았나요?

But no, it's gauge.

하지만 아니죠 '게이쥐' 맞습니다

You're gorg, this is gauge.

당신이 '골쥐' (멋진) 한거구요, 이건 '게이쥐' 입니다.

Gorgeous, you all look gorgeous.

(속삭이며) 멋져요, 당신 모두 넘나 멋져요
