I know that to have is a verb,

「have」はもちろん動詞です

well, it's an auxiliary verb.

まあ、正確には助動詞ですが

It's a verb that can be really,

have はかなり

really confusing for you guys

やっかいな動詞でしょう

because it has so many different meanings,

haveはたくさんの意味がありますからね

and it's used so frequently.

もちろん、すごく頻繁にも使われます

It's kind of difficult in the moment when you hear it

聞いた瞬間にはどの意味で使われているのか

to work out exactly what it means,

判断するのは難しいかもしれません

but I have 10 phrases,

今日は10個のフレーズ、

10 expressions.

10個の表現で

They're idiomatic.

慣用句的な

They're ones that you would use in more informal situations.

少しくだけた場で聞くような表現です

You'd hear them a lot in the United Kingdom.

ですが、イギリスではよく耳にします

I think most of them would be used in the US

ほとんどのはイギリスではもちろんよく聞きますし

and in other English-speaking countries as well.

もちろん他の英語圏でもよく耳にしますね

So they're pretty universal,

つまり、世界中でよく使われてます

but they're seriously, seriously useful.

ものすごく役立つと思いますよ

So let's get started with the lesson.

Quickly, before we get started,

Number one, my first expression using have

では、最初のhaveを使った表現は

is to have a laugh.

To have a laugh.

to have a laugh

Now to have a laugh means to kid around,

to have a laughとはからかう

or to be joking,

笑いを取ることです

or even to have a joke can be said as well.

to have a joke　とも言えますね

So if I say to you,

つまり、もし私が

are you having a laugh?

are you having a laugh?　と言ったら

I'm essentially saying, are you joking?

それは、冗談だろ、という意味です

Or sorry, I was just having a laugh.

Or sorry, I was just having a laugh. と言ったら

Sorry, I was just joking.

ごめんよ、冗談、

I wasn't being serious.

本気じゃないさ、という意味です

Number two, is to have somebody on.

二番目は、to have somebody on

To have somebody on.

to have somebody on

So it's a separable,

これはhave と on はくっつきません

and this one is always separable, phrasal verb.

これは必ず離れる熟語です

In this context,

この文脈だと

in this context,

この文脈だと

it must always be separated.

have と onは絶対くっつきません

It is a separable one for this meaning.

この意味だと、離れるのです

It sort of means to persuade somebody

これは誰かに嘘であることを

that something is true,

本当だと言って

when in reality, it isn't.

説得することです

So if I don't believe something

だからもし誰かが私に言ったことを

that somebody is saying to me,

信じられなければ

I'll say,

are you having me on?

are you having me on?と言います

Are you trying to persuade me that something's true,

つまり、あなたひょっとして本当だと嘘言って

when it actually isn't in reality?

実は本当ではないことを私に信じさせようとしてない

See, it's much, much easier just to say,

からかってる？と言った方が

are you having me on rather than

あなたひょっとして本当だと嘘言って

are you trying to persuade me something's true,

実は本当ではないことを私に信じさせようとしてない？

when it actually isn't reality?

と言うより、はるかに楽ですよね

(laughs)

Do you know I've only had one coffee today

今日は私、まだコーヒー一杯しか飲んでないのに

and it's like 5:00pm?

しかももう、五時なんですよ

Also, for those of you who don't know,

さらに、今日私、

I spend a lot of my time on a farm,

牧場で1日中過ごして

and I'm filming in a barn right now,

and I think something's going on

なんか外の動物の糞から

with some sort of animal poo outside,

and there are flies everywhere!

So if you see any,

Now, the next one,

we're still talking about laughing and joking.

This one is a lovely one.

This one is to have the last laugh,

to have the last laugh

and this is such a satisfying feeling

to have the last laughを使うシチュエーションは

to have the last laugh.

最高です

To have the last laugh

To have the last laugh

means to finally be more successful

は嫌な奴に対して

than somebody else who was unpleasant to you.

最後に笑い返してやる、ということです

So it means to finally be more successful

つまり、最後にはあなたをいつもからかってたやつより

than somebody else who was unpleasant to you.

成功してみせるということです

I'll give you an example of this.

例をあげてみましょう

Anna, I've got English like a native on the brain.

アナ、イギリス人に良くある名前ですが

Anna was bullied for being a nerd at school,

アナはオタクだと言って学校でいじめられていましたが

but she had the last laugh

最後にはその年で一番の成績を取り、

when she got the highest grades in the year.

最後には笑い返してやりました

Obviously, these other people were nasty to Anna.

アナは今まで他の人から嫌な思いをさせられていましたからね

This isn't true by the way, I've made it up.

もちろん、これは私の創造です

The other people were nasty to Anna,

アナはからかわれていましたが

but she had the last laugh,

最後には笑い返しました

because she got the highest grades in the school.

学校で一番いい成績をとったからです

She was more successful

彼女は彼女をいじめていた他の生徒より

than those other people who were unpleasant to her.

最後には成功したわけです

Totally fake.

I'm sure she was very successful at school.

She's a very intelligent woman,

but I've just,

I've made it up.

Number four, to have a sweet tooth.

四番目、to have a sweet tooth

Now I'd really like to know if this one

translates into your language at all,

同じような表現はありますか

because I can't remember if it is in Spanish.

私の知る限り、スペイン語にはありません

I don't know if it translates.

but in English,

to have a sweet tooth means to be a big,

to have a sweet toothとは

big fan of sweet foods.

大の甘党ということです

So the person with the biggest sweet tooth

私の知ってる大の甘党は

that I know is my grandma, my mom's mom.

私のおばあちゃん、母方の祖母です

She loves

彼女は

sweet foods

甘いのが

and anything sugary.

大好物です

You can see it in her face when she sees them.

甘いのを見たときの彼女の顔ったら、

She's really, really excited about it.

大興奮してるんです

So yes, my lovely grandma has a sweet tooth.

Now number five,

this is a phrase that my mom

used to say to me when I was a child,

何か悪いことをしてしまった時に

and I always knew that I had done something wrong.

言われました

This is to have a bone to pick with someone.

to have a bone to pick with someone

So to have a bone to pick with someone.

to have a bone to pick with someone　です

My mom always used to say, Lucy,

お母さんによく

I have a bone to pick with you.

ルーシー、あなたに一言あるは、と言われました

Oh no, if she's watching now,

もし、お母さんがこれ見てたら

she'll be laughing 'cause she knows

きっと、笑ってるでしょうね

exactly how she says it.

よく、言われましたから

Lucy, I have a bone to pick with you,

ルーシー、ちょっと言わせてね

and basically,

では、説明します

when somebody has a bone to pick with someone,

誰かが have a bone to pick with someone　と言ったら

it means that they have a problem or issue

それは、その人と話し合うべき

that they want to discuss with that person.

問題がある、ということです

So it would normally be

私がよく言われたのは

because I hadn't kept my bedroom tidy and organised.

私が、ベットルームを片付けないから

This was a problem for my mom,

それが、母の気に障り

and she wanted to talk to me about it.

母は私にそのことを言いたかったのです

Lucy, I have a bone to pick with you.

Lucy, I have a bone to pick with you

It's quite a nice diplomatic way,

私的には

in my opinion,

これはかなり丁寧な言い方で

to confront an issue with someone,

何か問題を話し合いたい時には

instead of saying,

これがいいかもしれません

I want to talk to you about a problem.

I want to talk to you about a problem.　と言うよりも

I have a bone to pick with you.

I have a bone to pick with you　と言った方が

I think it's a bit nicer, but softer.

柔らかい感じになります

Now number six,

六番目は

is it number six?

六番目？

Yeah, it's number six.

六番目ね

Number six,

六番目は

is something that I actually had myself

私自身も

in 2015,

late 2015.

経験したことです

It is to have a change of heart,

それは　to have a change of heart

and if you have a change of heart,

to have a change of heart　というのは

it means that you change your attitude,

あなたが何かに対する態度を変えた時

or your opinion about something,

あるいは意見を変えることです

normally a long-standing opinion

普通は長期的な意見

or attitude about something.

あるいは態度に使います

Usually, it's a change

また、普通、

from a negative point to a positive one,

悪い方向から、良い方向へ使いますね

but it's all relative.

相対的にですけどね

My change of heart

それでは私の経験は

was that I thought I wanted to work in marketing.

昔は、マーケティング部門で働きたかったんです

My dream was actually to work in L'Oreal.

私はロレアルで働きたかったんです

I really, really,

really, really wanted to work

ものすごく

in the marketing department of L'Oreal.

For some reason, I had it in my head,

I realised that I wanted to continue teaching,

I wanted to start teaching on YouTube.

I didn't think it was going to be a career,

but I definitely knew that this connection

and suddenly my attitude changed.

Number seven is to have a crack at something.

7つ目は　To have a crack at something

To have a crack at something.

To have a crack at something

To have a crack at something　です

Distracted by the beautiful sounds of English.

言ってて、心地よくなるような言葉ですね

So to have a crack at something is to try something,

To have a crack at something　とは何試してみることです

or to try to do something,

あるいは、何かをしようとすること

or to have a turn at doing something.

何かやって見ようとすることです

So for example,

例えば

maybe there's a really hard,

すごく硬い

I always struggle with this.

いつも、これには悩まされてるんですが

You know like a jar

例えば、瓶

of pasta sauce or gherkins?

とか、パスタ缶とか、ピクルス詰めがあるじゃないですか

I love gherkins,

gherkins、私大好きなんです

pickles in America.

アメリカだと、ピクルスと言いますね

Especially the ones

from the Polish section in the supermarket.

They are better than the English gherkins.

Anyway, I digress.

The jar,

the lid is really, really tight,

and you always go and ask a man in the house to open it,

と、いつも誰か男の人に頼みます

and they're trying,

and they're trying,

彼らも一生懸命

一生懸命

and then I think,

やるのですが、無理だった時

oh, let me have a crack at it.

let me have a crack at it　というのです

Let me attempt.

私も試してみる、ということですね

It's my turn,

私の番よ、みたいな

and I do it,

試してみると

and sometimes,

たまに、

sometimes I manage it.

たまに、成功するんです

But that's to have a crack at something.

とにかくそれが　to have a crack at something　ということです

It is to try and do something,

つまり、これは何かを試すこと

or to have a turn at trying to do something.

何かを変えようと試すことです

So you could use it in a situation like,

また、例を挙げると

you know, would you mind taking my picture?

写真を撮ってくれますかと頼まれた時

It's a common tourist situation,

旅行に行けば、よくあるシチュエーションですよね

and you can say,

頼まれたらあなたは

I'll have a crack at it.

I'll have a crack at it といえばいいんです

I'll give it a go.

これは、いいですよ。

I'll try.

試してみますよ、ってことです

So yes, that's a lovely phrase for you guys to use.

number eight is a romantic one.

ロマンチックなフレーズですよ

This is to have a crush on someone.

to have a crush on someone

To have a crush on someone.

to have a crush on someone

So if you have a crush on someone,

to have a crush on someone　というのは

it means you fancy them.

誰かに魅力を感じてるということです

You really quite like them,

かなり、誰かのことが好き

in a romantic sort of way.

恋してる、ってことです

So I for a very, very long time,

昔、昔、私は

had a crush on Chris Pratt.

クリスパットに恋してました

I'm not sure if you know who he is.

誰だかわかりますか？

He's a very, very funny American actor,

とっても面白いアメリカ人の俳優です

and when I saw him in Jurassic Park,

ジュラシックパークで、彼を見た時

I had a,

I developed this huge, huge crush,

ものすごく、 「crush」してしまったんです

and to this day,

I have a crush on Chris Pratt.

Now crushes normally mean in English,

英語で have a crushというのは

they're just that initial kind of ooh!

はじめってあった時にウワッていう時に使います

I like him, or I like her, or I like them kind of thing.

彼が、彼女が、奴らが好きだ、みたいな感じですね

So yes.

だから、

I'm sure we all have crushes on people.

皆さんも今きっと　have a crushあるでしょ？

Now number nine is one

9個目は

that's very relevant to you guys actually.

皆さんにも関係のあるものです

It is to have a good command of something.

to have a good command of something

To have a good command of something.

to have a good command of something　です

This means to know something well

これは、何かについてよく知っている

or to be good at something.

あるいは、何かが上手であるということです

So we really, really,

これはとても

really frequently use it with languages.

よく言語に関して使われます

So if I say I have a good command of Spanish,

例えば、 I have a good command of Spanish　というのは

it means I know Spanish well.

私はスペイン語が堪能である

I am good at speaking Spanish.

スペイン語が上手

I'm more than capable of conversing.

日常会話レベル以上、ということです

So if you guys are applying for a job,

皆さんが、仕事に申し込む時、

or you want to update your CV,

CVを新しくしたい時に

you don't want to say,

もし

I'm fluent in English,

I'm fluent in English

but you know,

とは書きたくなけれど

you want to say that you are good at it.

英語が上手であると言いたいならば

You can say,

I have a good command of the English language.

今紹介したように

I have a good command of the English language.

I have a good command of English.

I have a good command of English

Really nice one to use.

と書けるわけです

Now number 10 is slightly more old-fashioned,

十番目は少し、古めかしい表現ですが

but you can use it in quite formal situations.

フォーマルな場面で使えます

This is to have a good mind to do something.

to have a good mind to do something.

To have a good mind to do something.

to have a good mind to do something.　です

It's ever so slightly threatening,

少し、強気な言い方です

and it means to be tempted to do something.

何かをするつもりがある、という意味です

So, for example,

例えば、

if I heard that somebody was gossiping behind my back,

誰かが、私の陰口を言っていたら

I might say,

私は、

I have a good mind to confront them,

I have a good mind to confront them　と言います

as in I am tempted to confront them.

つまり、私はそれに向き合っていくつもりだ、ということです

It doesn't mean that I'm going to do it,

実際に、何かをするというよりも

but it means that the temptation is there.

それをやってやるつもろがあるぞ、ということです

So you might receive a piece of work

例えば皆さんが

from your teacher or your university lecturer,

先生や、大学の講義

or your boss,

あるいは上司から

and they've returned it to you with a bad mark

提出したものを悪い評価で

or a bad review,

突き返されたなら

and you might say to your colleague or classmate,

クラスメイトや、同僚に

I have a good mind to go a speak to them about it,

I have a good mind to go a speak to them about it

like I am tempted to.

文句を付けに行ってやりたい、といような意味です

It's kind of like,

つまり、

I know I shouldn't, but I kind of want to.

やっちゃいけないけど、やりたいということです
