It's a verb that can be really,

because it has so many different meanings,

and it's used so frequently.

It's kind of difficult in the moment when you hear it

They're idiomatic.

They're ones that you would use in more informal situations.

You'd hear them a lot in the United Kingdom.

I think most of them would be used in the US

and in other English-speaking countries as well.

So they're pretty universal,

Number one, my first expression using have

Numéro 1, ma première expression qui s'utilise avec "have"

is to have a laugh.

est "to have a laugh".

To have a laugh.

"To have a laugh".

Now to have a laugh means to kid around,

"To have a laugh" veut dire "to kid around" (plaisanter),

or to be joking,

ou "to be joking" (blaguer)

or even to have a joke can be said as well.

"to have a joke" peut aussi se dire

So if I say to you,

are you having a laugh?

"Are you having a laugh?"

I'm essentially saying, are you joking?

Je suis essentiellement en train de dire : "are you joking?"

Or sorry, I was just having a laugh.

Number two, is to have somebody on.

Numéro 2 est "to have somebody on."

To have somebody on.

"To have somebody on"

So it's a separable,

and this one is always separable, phrasal verb.

et celui-ci est toujours séparable-> verbe à particule.

In this context,

it must always be separated.

It is a separable one for this meaning.

It sort of means to persuade somebody

when in reality, it isn't.

So if I don't believe something

that somebody is saying to me,

I'll say,

Are you trying to persuade me that something's true,

See, it's much, much easier just to say,

are you trying to persuade me something's true,

I'll give you an example of this.

this is a phrase that my mom

used to say to me when I was a child,

and I always knew that I had done something wrong.

This is to have a bone to pick with someone.

C'est "to have a bone to pick with someone" ( = avoir un oeuf à peler avec quelqu'un)

So to have a bone to pick with someone.

Avoir un oeuf à peler avec quelqu'un

My mom always used to say, Lucy,

Ma maman avait toujours l'habitude de dire : "Lucy,

I have a bone to pick with you.

J'ai un oeuf à peler avec toi."

Oh no, if she's watching now,

Si elle regarde ça maintenant,

she'll be laughing 'cause she knows

elle va rire parce qu'elle sait

exactly how she says it.

exactement comment elle le dit.

Lucy, I have a bone to pick with you,

and basically,

Et en gros,

when somebody has a bone to pick with someone,

quand quelqu'un a "a bone to pick with someone",

it means that they have a problem or issue

ça veut dire qu'il a un problème ou un litige

that they want to discuss with that person.

dont il veut discuter avec la personne.

So it would normally be

Donc ce serait normalement

because I hadn't kept my bedroom tidy and organised.

"parce que je n'avait pas gardé ma chambre rangée et organisée,

This was a problem for my mom,

C'était un problème pour ma maman

and she wanted to talk to me about it.

et elle voulait en parler avec moi.

Lucy, I have a bone to pick with you.

"Lucy, j'ai un oeuf à peler avec toi."

It's quite a nice diplomatic way,

C'est plutôt une façon diplomatique,

in my opinion,

selon moi,

to confront an issue with someone,

de confronter quelqu'un à un problème.

instead of saying,

Au lieu de dire :

I want to talk to you about a problem.

"Je veux te parler d'un problème."

I have a bone to pick with you.

"J'ai un oeuf à peler avec toi"

I think it's a bit nicer, but softer.

C'est un peu plus "gentil", un peu plus "soft".

Now number six,

Numéro 6

is it number six?

Est-ce le 6?

Yeah, it's number six.

Oui, numéro 6.

Number six,

Numéro six

is something that I actually had myself

est quelque chose qui m'est en fait arrivée

in 2015,

It is to have a change of heart,

C'est "to have a change of heart" ( = +/- changer d'avis)

and if you have a change of heart,

et si vous avez un "change of heart"

it means that you change your attitude,

ça veut dire que vous changez votre comportement,

or your opinion about something,

ou votre opinion à propos de quelque chose

normally a long-standing opinion

en général une opinion bien ancrée

or attitude about something.

Usually, it's a change

from a negative point to a positive one,

but it's all relative.

was that I thought I wanted to work in marketing.

So to have a crack at something is to try something,

or to try to do something,

ou "essayer de faire quelque chose"

or to have a turn at doing something.

ou "to have a turn at doing something".

So for example,

You know like a jar

So if you have a crush on someone,

it means you fancy them.

Cela veut dire que vous ce quelqu'un vous plait. (= to fancy)

You really quite like them,

Vous l'aimé(e) vraiment bien,

in a romantic sort of way.

So I for a very, very long time,

had a crush on Chris Pratt.

I'm not sure if you know who he is.

He's a very, very funny American actor,

Now crushes normally mean in English,

they're just that initial kind of ooh!

So yes.

I'm sure we all have crushes on people.

Now number nine is one

that's very relevant to you guys actually.

qui est très pertinente pour vous, en fait.

It is to have a good command of something.

C'est "to have a good command of something". (avoir une bonne maîtrise)

To have a good command of something.

"To have a good command of something".

This means to know something well

Ceci veut dire : "bien savoir quelque chose"

or to be good at something.

ou "être bon en quelque chose".

So we really, really,

Donc on l'utilise très,

really frequently use it with languages.

très, très fréquemment à propos des langues.

So if I say I have a good command of Spanish,

Donc si je dis "I have a good command of Spanish",

it means I know Spanish well.

Ca veut dire que je connais vraiment bien l'Espagnol.

I am good at speaking Spanish.

Je suis bon(ne) lorsque je m'exprime en Espagnol.

I'm more than capable of conversing.

So if you guys are applying for a job,

or you want to update your CV,

ou si vous voulez mettre à jour votre CV,

you don't want to say,

vous ne voulez pas dire,

I'm fluent in English,

"je parle Anglais couramment"

but you know,

mais

you want to say that you are good at it.

You can say,

I have a good command of the English language.

Vous pouvez dire :

"I have a good command of the English language"

I have a good command of English.

Really nice one to use.

Now number 10 is slightly more old-fashioned,

Maintenant la numéro 10 est légèrement démodée,

but you can use it in quite formal situations.

This is to have a good mind to do something.

C'est "to have a good mind to do something"

To have a good mind to do something.

It's ever so slightly threatening,

C'est vraiment légèrement menaçant,

and it means to be tempted to do something.

et ça veut dire "être tenté de faire quelque chose".

So, for example,

Donc par exemple,

if I heard that somebody was gossiping behind my back,

Si j'entendais que quelqu'un racontais des ragots derrière mon dos,

I might say,

je pourrais dire

I have a good mind to confront them,

"I have a good mind to confront them",

as in I am tempted to confront them.

Je suis tenté(e) de les confronter.

It doesn't mean that I'm going to do it,

Ca ne veut pas dire que je vais le faire,

but it means that the temptation is there.

mais ça veut dire que la tentation est là.

So you might receive a piece of work

Donc, vous pouvez recevoir un travail

from your teacher or your university lecturer,

de votre enseignant ou de votre maître de conférence (université),

or your boss,

ou votre patron

and they've returned it to you with a bad mark

et vous l'ont remis avec un mauvais point

or a bad review,

ou mauvais compte rendu,

and you might say to your colleague or classmate,

et vous pourriez dire à votre collègue ou camarade de classe :

I have a good mind to go a speak to them about it,

"I have a good mind to go to speak to them about it"

like I am tempted to.

Je suis tenté(e) de le faire

It's kind of like,

C'est un peu comme :

I know I shouldn't, but I kind of want to.

"Je sais que je ne devrais pas, mais j'en ai envie."
