Talking of which, we are discussing words and phrases connected to the word world.

You might be surprised to find out just how many uses there are of that particular word.

It is lovely to be with you again. I talk about English.

You might say that I am an English addict and I have a feeling maybe you are as well.

It is

lovely being with you once more across the internet.

Isn't the internet amazing? It really is.

I don't know where I would be now if the internet suddenly vanished.

I wonder how many people in the world are not connected to the internet.

I wonder, is it possible these days to live without the internet?

So imagine imagine your life without any internet connection.

And that of course includes your mobile phone.

So if you could not in any way use the internet, would your life change it all?

I have to say, I think mine would a lot.

So if I didn't have the internet,

I don't know what I would do to be honest.

And I wonder how many people in the world don't have it now, if you ask me to guess,

I would say over half the world probably doesn't

use the internet or they don't have any access to the internet.

So I would imagine maybe 50% of the population.

Now, I don't want to be mean or cruel, but I would imagine a lot of people over a certain age

do not have access or don't use the internet in any way.

I might be wrong, of course, because

it is very easy these days to judge people

by their appearance, or their age, or their status in society.

So maybe there are many people around the world who use the internet who are over a certain age.

I don't want to be prejudiced at all.

The internet is often maligned.

Oh, there's an interesting word to malign something is to speak cruelly about it.

Or maybe you speak in a negative way, or attack that particular thing.

You malign that thing.

A lot of people do say that the internet is a bad thing.

However, just like everything in life, there are good sides and bad sides.

Humanity is made up of good people.

Fortunately, they are the majority.

And of course there are some bad apples as well.

But we don't like to talk about them because they get too much attention these days.

If you want my honest opinion, but it is interesting to think about where we would be now if we didn't have the internet.

Now, I remember growing up, you might not believe this, but I am quite old.

I remember the days before the internet.

The only way you can get in touch.

When I was a child, you could only get in touch with people by calling their house

on your house phone.

You would have to ring their house phone.

That was the only way of getting in touch directly with another person.

There were no computers.

There were no cell phones, no smart phones.

It didn't exist.

The only way we could directly contact someone was by being at home.

So I would have to be in the house. You would have to be in the house,

and that would be the only way we could directly communicate with each other before the internet came along.

Isn't that amazing? It's very strange when you think about it.

It's a small museum and in there they have some full size, some absolutely huge paintings by the artist Monet.

So I want to go alone and have a look at Monet's Water Lilies.

One of my lifetime ambitions is to see them in real life.

So I'm hoping that I have a chance to do all of those things during our short trip to Paris.

And of course, I really hope that I get a chance to meet up with you face to face.

Can you imagine that?

I wonder what it must be like

You might not realise it, but that is not even real.

So that is not a monitor there, even though I can put my finger in front of it

and it looks as if it's really in the studio, but that is just an optical effect.

I am using some Hollywood style special effects to make that look as if it's real, and I will show

right now. I will show you how I do it.

So I will put this in front of the light, and then you will see how I do this.

Do do so as you can see,

that is not actually there.

It is.

A special green screen effect.

So all that actually is, is a little piece of cloth, green cloth.

And what I've done is I've

used some special effects to make that look as if it's really there, but it isn't.

It isn't there. It doesn't really exist.

So I hope that puts your mind at rest.

For those wondering what that is, is it a TV screen?

Is it a type of monitor?

And I can tell you now that it isn't.

It is just a small green piece of cloth.

So I wonder, I wonder how many people in the world

are on the internet right now.

I don't think it's everyone.

I think it's around about 50% of the internet

is taken up,

or 50% of the population on the planet actually use the internet.

I had a nice surprise this morning outside my bedroom window.

I looked outside this morning and I saw something rather magical.

A bird that I've never seen before around here.

I'm going to show you new right now.

So this is something I filmed this morning outside my window.

And there it is, a very unusual bird.

This is not the type of bird you normally find in this area.

This particular bird is called an egret.

Egret.

It is very similar to a heron.

And you can see the shape of the bird is very similar to a heron.

The only difference is they have much longer legs.

Herons have shorter legs.

But that particular bird is so beautiful.

And there it was this morning.

The only problem with this particular type of bird is it does like eating fish.

And there are some of my neighbours around this area.

They do have

very expensive fish in their ponds.

And this particular bird dislike eating them.

So some of the neighbours around here where I live are not particularly pleased by this bird appearing

because they do eat fish and they will eat the fish from anywhere, wherever they can find

the fish, they will eat them.

So I think this is lovely.

What a lovely, unusual bird.

Now of course we do get herons around here.

We get a few herons.

But I have to say, I've never seen an egret before.

And you can see there its legs

are really, really long.

A very unusual looking bird.

And I suppose from that video you can't actually judge the size of it.

But it is a very big bird,

very large, very tall, and it has huge wings. Oh.

It just did a poop.

Even egrets have to poop sometimes.

But isn't that lovely? It's not a beautiful, beautiful bird.

I believe the the name of the bird comes from its appearance as the feathers

cascade down its back.

So I think the name egret comes from its appearance.

The way it looks.

Isn't that amazing?

It has the most amazing neck, and in a moment it's going to fly away.

So any moment now, it is going to fly off.

If we wait, here we go.

A bird that we don't see very often in this area.

It's always exciting when you see a different bird or a new type of bird in your area.

And as you know, I love words and phrases in the English language.

Now, in the news this morning.

There was a big story concerning members of the royal family in this country.

Because there has been a long dispute that has been taking place in the British courts here in this country concerning

Prince Harry and certain newspapers.

And apparently they were using illegal methods

to get stories.

And some of these stories were printed in the newspapers over a very long period of time.

And this morning there was a settlement.

When you make a settlement, it means you come to an agreement.

Both sides or both

groups will agree on something.

And this reminded me of two very interesting words that we have in the English language.

And the words are slander and libel.

So many people get confused by these particular words.

So what is the difference between slander and libel?

Well, I will tell you, they do have very different meanings

and they are expressed using very different terms.

First of all, we will look at the word slander.

Slander.

Slander is the action of saying something damaging about a person or group.

So you are actually saying it that is it something that you have said may be a gesture

or a thing that you suggest about a person or a group of people or anything for that matter?

So this particular thing is said, and the thing

that has been said can be

damaging if it causes damage to a person's good name or their reputation.

Slander is a thing that is harmful or damaging to a person's reputation.

When we talk about someone's reputation, we are talking about their good name.

The way in which they are viewed by other people.

We talk about a person's reputation, whether or not they are a good person or a bad person.

Are they kind or are they wicked?

And sometimes people might say things that are harmful or damaging

and that is libel.

I meant to say slander.

Of course, slander is the defamation of someone's good character.

So if you say something about another person and it damages their reputation, you can take that person to court.

You can actually take action against that person because the thing they have said has caused damage.

Slander can be described as slanderous.

For example, a slanderous comment or a slanderous rumour, something that has been said

by a person is slanderous.

It is slander.

And then we have the word libel.

Now the difference is, of course, slander refers to something said

libel is the writing or publishing of a harmful or damaging statement.

So instead of saying it, it is being written, it is being published,

or it is being broadcast in some way, maybe on television.

So libel and slander are different things.

So when we talk about libel, we are talking about the writing

or the printing of something that is damaging to another person's reputation.

Libel is sometimes or something printed as fact.

So they are saying that that thing is true.

They are stating it as a fact in writing

when it is actually untrue.

So the thing that has been written is untrue.

They are trying to say that it is real, but it is not.

It is not true.

It is interesting to note that libel laws here in the UK are different

from libel laws in other countries, including the USA.

So libel does not cover opinions or points of view in British court.

So if you try to take action against someone for their opinions,

then you can't do it.

However, in the United States there are there are more.

I suppose you might say that the libel laws in the USA are more open.

They are wider.

So there is more of a chance of libel action being taken against someone.

So in Britain,

if you just

put forward your opinion about someone, then you cannot take action.

However, if you print something as fact

and then later it turns out to be untrue, then you can sue that person.

You can take them to court.

So in Britain.

Libel must be proved in a court of law.

You must take that person to court and you will take action against that person.

So it is interesting to note that there is a difference between slander and libel.

Slander is spoken.

Something said that is damaging.

Libel refers to something that is written, typed or published in some way.

And quite often if a person does that, you will.

Well, you probably

will be able to take action against them.

Which of course leads me

to say that quite often you have to be careful of the words you choose.

In certain situations, you have to be careful what you say about another person.

If you say something about another person, that is damaging, then we can say that that is slander.

If you publish something

that you are stating as a fact,

but it's untrue.

And if that thing also causes damage to another person's reputation, that is libel.

Very interesting.

Lewis says Prince Harry has taken some newspapers to court for libel.

Things that have been published, and also the way in which that information is gained as well.

So I think the situation with Prince Harry and the British newspapers

is also not just because they printed things about him, but also the way in which they gathered the information as well.

They used illegal methods to do it,

a big thing.

But I think in the USA I might be wrong.

So if there are any people watching in the United States, I'm sure you will tell me.

But I think the libel laws in the USA, are wider.

So I think you can be sued much easier.

I might be wrong. There.

I'm sure someone will let me know.

But certainly in this country and in Britain, you do have to be careful what you write, and quite often what you say as well.

Words and phrases connected to the word world.

World words and phrases.

And you might be surprised to find out just how many words

and phrases are connected to world.

Here we go with the first one.

The word world can relate to where we are and how we exist

as a group or individually.

So you might talk about the world in general, which involves everyone.

The place in which we live.

The feeling that you get from existing

in the world.

We can talk about our world, the world we share.

We can also talk about your world.

Maybe your point of view, or maybe your own feelings,

or the things, of course, that exist in your own life.

And of course, my world.

I can talk about the things that affect me.

My own points of view about the world.

So we often describe the world as a general thing, or of course, individually.

One person's own perception or their viewpoint of the world around them,

the perception of all around us as a paradigm.

I think that's an interesting word, and maybe a world you've never come across before.

The word paradigm,

the world as one sees it.

Your own point of view or as you see things.

Your own perception.

When we talk about perception, we are talking about a person's viewpoint.

The way they see the world around them.

So it is interesting to note that there are many ways of using the word world.

The word I just mentioned, by the way, is paradigm.

A paradigm refers to the assumptions and understandings of things that exist.

A framework of what is considered true and existing.

So maybe in a general sense we can talk about the paradigm

also in certain areas or certain fields.

Certain frameworks.

Maybe we can talk about medical paradigms, things

that exist in medicine or maybe social paradigms.

A social paradigm generally refers to things that happen in society.

So there are many ways of using this word when we are looking at individual aspects or parts of life.

We can refer to this world as the place in which we exist.

And this is true.

So the world is everything.

The world is the place where we exist.

All which exists on this planet is in this world.

The world around us,

as a construct.

So again, we are looking at a type of thing and the way it is viewed,

or of course, as what exists, what exists around us is the world.

Everything that is there, the world in which we live.

And I suppose you would often hear people say this.

They would often say, the world in which we live.

The world generally, everything that is going on around us.

As a phrase, we can use the word world to show the way we perceive things.

So when we talk about perceiving, we are talking about the way we see the world, or we the way we see something

as observed.

You perceive something quite often.

You perceive using your eyes and of course your ears.

You can perceive things, and that is the way in which we all survive in the world,

or the way in which most of us are able to get through our day to day lives.

We perceive, we look. We view. We absorb.

This world

can refer to all that exists around us.

So we often use the phrase this world.

And generally speaking, this refers to everything.

Everything that goes on in society, relationships between people, all of the animals in nature and the way they behave.

The world

also as a phrase.

And there are many ways of using the word world as a phrase.

Something can be out of this world.

Something that is out of this world is something that is unusual or strange to us.

It is unusual. It is odd.

It is something fantastic.

It is out of this world.

We often use the expression to show that something is amazing

or unusual,

or maybe

just something that is interesting.

A person can be in a world of their own.

I have to say, can I just admit that quite often I am in a world of my own?

Quite often I will go into my own world

to daydream

or fantasise about other things away from reality.

And I think we all do this sometimes.

We all at some point go into our own world.

Oh yes. We like to imagine how things might be.

We like to daydream. We like to think.

We like to fantasise.

We go into our own world.

He is always in a world of his own.

She is always in a world of her own.

She drifts away.

She goes into a daydream.

Sometimes I go into a world of my own.

Sometimes when I'm thinking about things.

Maybe I will become distracted by my own thoughts.

I will go.

Into a world of my own.

I'm sure we all do it.

We drift away. We go into a fantasy.

Two things that are very different from each

other can be described as being worlds apart.

Two things that do not go together.

Or two things that are very different from each other can be described as worlds apart.

The contrast between one thing and another.

They are very different from each other.

They are worlds apart.

We are worlds apart.

As your family is rich and mine is poor, we are looking at the way

in which something can be different from another thing.

They are worlds apart.

It's a little bit like Romeo and Juliet.

You might describe that young couple as being worlds apart because their backgrounds were very different.

We might express two opposite things coming together as worlds colliding, very different.

Two things that come together that should not be nearby.

They should never meet.

Worlds colliding.

Things that are not meant to be together or to meet up.

They should never meet.

If they do, we will say that worlds collide.

My wife met my secret lover.

And now those worlds have collided.

Two worlds that you want to keep apart have collided.

And now there is nothing you can do about it.

Unfortunately.

Having the freedom to do whatever you want

can be described with the phrase the world is your oyster.

I love that expression. It's a great expression.

The world is your oyster.

You are free to discover the wonders of life you can explore.

You can go anywhere you want.

You can look around you.

You have many opportunities to meet other people.

We can say that the world is your oyster.

It is all there to be discovered.

I love that phrase.

I think it's a nice phrase. Chile.

To have the choice of all that life can offer.

We can say that you have the world at your feet.

You have the world at your feet.

The power to do whatever you want.

A person with authority.

Or maybe a wealthy person.

A person with a particular type of job might have the world at their feet.

They can explore. They can do anything.

They have the world at their feet.

Something distant

or out of reach

can be described as being worlds away.

So far away, so distant, far, far away.

That particular thing can be described as worlds away.

We are worlds away from reversing ageing in humans.

That means that particular thing is out of reach.

We can't do it at the moment.

It is worlds away,

an almost impossible or unreachable goal.

We can describe something as being worlds away, something very different,

something that is the opposite, or something that you cannot reach

is worlds away.

Another one,

an often used term for an undeveloped nation is Third World.

Now, we discussed this on Sunday.

Mr. Steve and myself.

We talked about this particular phrase, and I don't like the phrase.

And I think nowadays many people avoid saying third world

because it does sound rather arrogant and judgemental

and even unfair as well.

More aid needs to be sent to third world countries.

So these days, the phrase third world often is

used when we are referring to a poor or underdeveloped country.

However, these days this phrase is often seen as derogatory.

Something that is derogatory is something that is insulting.

You are insulting that particular thing.

You are making that thing seem bad.

You are treating it unkindly, derogatory.

So I think it would be fair to say that these days many people choose not to use the phrase third world.

As a certain thing, such as a particular interest or subject.

But we can often use the word world

to describe that particular thing.

For example, we might say the world of history,

everything connected to that particular subject, the world of cars,

everything connected to cars.

You might say that Mr.

Steve lives in the world of cars,

because that is what he thinks about for most of the time, the world of science,

the world of English.

Oh, I like that one.

The world of English is a fun and exciting place to be.

I am so glad you are here today to watch my live stream.

We could also have the world of astronomy.

In fact, you can have the world of anything a particular subject or a particular interest.

We can describe it as a certain world.

But my favourite is the world of English.

Definitely my favourite.

Other phrase is

your opinion.

We can say your opinion is the world as you see it.

So when we talk about the world as you see it, we are talking about your own personal viewpoint, your opinion of that thing.

We have our own point of view,

the world as you see it, the world as I see it, our own particular viewpoint.

And of course, when you have a viewpoint of something, you will also have an opinion of that thing as well.

So maybe your view of the world, the world as you see it.

We might also ask a question

what in the world?

Normally we will ask this in a surprised way

or a shocked way, something that we are expressing in a surprised manner.

What in the world?

For example, what in the world are you doing here?

Perhaps your friend suddenly appears.

Maybe you are at work and your friend walks into the office and you are surprised and you ask,

what in the world are you doing here?

Because you're shocked. You're surprised.

So what in the world is often used as a way of expressing surprise, shock?

And the way we express it is by saying, what in the world?

And that, as they say,

is in fact, it is almost time to say goodbye.

It is almost time to leave the world of English for a short time.
