I want to have it clear -- I love to be here with you all,

but to tell the story of the amazing people of Puerto Rico

우리 멋진 푸에르토리코인들에게 음식을 주기 위해 함께 한

that came together to feed the people of Puerto Rico.

자랑스러운 푸에르토리코인들에 대한 얘기를 들려주고 싶어서에요.

My name is José Andrés, and you know I love to feed the few,

저는 호세 안드레스입니다. 아시는 것처럼, 단 몇명도 좋지만

but even more, I love to feed the many.

많은 사람들을 위해 요리하는 것을 훨씬 더 좋아하죠.

Here, right after the hurricane,

이 곳을 허리케인이 휩쓸고 간 직후

like we'd done many times before after an earthquake in Haiti

아이티 지진, 허리케인 샌디 등의 자연재해가 생기면

or Sandy or others,

늘 그랬듯이

I had this sense of urgency to be there

서둘러 현장에 가서

and to try to feed one person,

한 사람이라도 먹여야 한다는 절박함이 있었죠.

and always, you have crazy friends that want to join you

또 늘 그랬듯이, 이런 불가능한 듯한 도전에 동참하는

in those impossible endeavors.

정신나간 친구들도 있어요.

I'm always surrounded by amazing friends that only help me to be better.

저를 좀 더 나은 인간으로 만들어 주는 이런 멋진 친구들이 항상 주변에 많아요.

Nate came next to me.

이번엔 네이트가 함께했죠.

This was a Monday, and this is what we found.

월요일이었는데, 이게 그 때 상황이에요.

The destruction you saw on TV, one more hurricane,

TV에서 보면 그저 또 하나의 허리케인으로 보일 수도 있지만

but this destruction was real.

이 폐허의 현장은 정말 생생했어요.

More than 95 percent of the electricity in the island was gone.

섬 전체의 85% 이상의 전원이 끊겼습니다.

Every single electric post was gone.

전봇대들은 다 못쓰게 됐고

All the cell towers were gone.

이동전화 송신탑들도 다 쓰러져 있었어요.

You couldn't communicate with anybody.

서로 연락할 방법이 없었죠.

You couldn't find anybody the moment you moved away from San Juan.

샌 후안을 벗어나면 사람이 보이지 않았어요.

Even in San Juan, we had issues trying to use our cell phones.

샌후안에서도, 휴대전화가 잘 터지지 않았으니까요.

And what I found was that the island was hungry,

그리고 알게된 건 섬 사람들이 굶고 있었고

and the people didn't have money, because ATMs were not working,

현금출납기들이 작동하지 않아서 현금도 구할 수 없었고

or their cards, which are electronic, for food stamps,

전기가 들어와야 쓸 수 있는 식량 배급카드 또한

they couldn't use it in their supermarkets,

수퍼마켓 등에서 쓸모가 없었을 뿐더러

or there was no food or gas or clean water to cook.

음식도, 연료도, 요리에 쓸 깨끗한 물도 구할 수 없었어요.

The need and the urgency of now was real,

당장 시급한 기본적인 것들이 아주 절실할 때

and I was just able to get into a meeting at FEMA,

힘들게 미 재난 관리청이 주관하는 회의에 참석하게 됐어요.

where many of the main NGO partners were having a conversation

주요 민간 단체들에서 나온 많은 이들이 앉아서 앞으로 몇 주간

about how to feed the island in the weeks to come,

섬 전체의 식량 공급 대책에 대해 논의들만 하고 있는데

but the urgency was right now, in this minute, in this second,

정말 한시가 급했는데 말이죠.

and we almost had three million people that needed to be fed.

약 3백만 명의 사람들을 먹여야 했으니까요.

So we began doing what we do best.

그래서 우리는 가장 잘 하는 것부터 일단 시작했죠.

We went to see the sources of food,

식량창고를 둘러 보러 갔는데

and I was able to see that the private industry actually was ready

민간 기업들은 모든 준비를 마치고

and prepared and thriving,

분주하게 움직이고 있었는데

but somebody at FEMA was not able even to be aware of that.

정작 미 재난 관리청 직원들은 그걸 전혀 모르고 있더라고요.

And what we did was use fine kitchens.

그리고 다음으로 쓸만한 주방들을 찾았죠.

José Enrique, one of my favorite men in the whole world,

세상에서 제가 가장 좋아하는 사람 중 하나인 호세 엔리케입니다.

one of the great restaurants in San Juan,

샌 후안에서 가장 근사한 식당 중 하나를 가지고 있죠.

where before landing, I began calling all the chefs of Puerto Rico,

푸에르토리코에 도착도 하기 전에, 그 쪽 요리사들에게 전화하기 시작했는데

and everybody was like, "Let's not plan, let's not meet,

모두 한결같이 말했죠, "계획도, 만날 필요도 없고

let's start cooking."

당장 음식부터 만듭시다."

And that's what we did.

저희는 바로 그렇게 했습니다.

We began feeding the people of Puerto Rico, on a Monday.

도착한 월요일부터 푸에르토리코 사람들에게 음식을 해주기 시작한 거죠.

On a Monday, we did a thousand meals, sancocho, an amazing stew

월요일에, 샌코쵸라는 진짜 맛있는 스튜를 천 인분 만들었어요.

with corn and yucca and pork.

옥수수, 유카, 돼지고기로 만들죠.

By Sunday, we were doing 25,000.

일요일까지는 2만 5천인분을 만들었어요.

By Sunday, we already didn't only use the restaurant,

일요일까지, 식당 주방 뿐 아니라

but we rented the parking lot right across.

바로 건너 편 주차장까지 빌려서 음식을 만들었어요.

We began bringing food trucks,

밥차들이 동원되기 시작했고

and a rice and chicken paella operation, and refrigerators,

쌀밥과 닭고기 파이 등을 만들고, 냉장고도 들어오고

and volunteers began coming.

자원봉사자들도 모이기 시작했죠.

Why? Because everybody wants to find a place to help,

왜냐고요? 다들 도움을 줄 곳을

a place to do something.

뭔가 할 수 있는 것을 찾고 있었으니까요.

This is how we began our first delivery.

이렇게 첫 배달을 시작했습니다.

The hospitals -- nobody was feeding the nurses and the doctors,

여러 병원에 있는 간호사나 의사들에게 음식을 해 주는 사람이 없어서

and we began feeding our first project,

처음으로 캐롤리나 병원에

Hospital Carolina.

음식을 해주기 시작했어요.

All of a sudden, every single hospital was calling us.

그러자 갑자기, 모든 병원에서 연락이 오기 시작했죠.

"We need food so we can feed our 24/7 employees

"온 종일 쉴 새 없이 환자들과 노인들, 그리고

taking care of the sick and the elderly and the people in need."

재해민들을 돌보는 직원들에게 줄 음식이 필요합니다."

And then the place was too small. We were receiving orders.

이제 주방이 너무 좁았어요. 주문이 계속 들어왔으니까요.

Every time we got one guest, one customer,

손님들이 한 명 한 명 모여들었고

we never stopped serving them,

우린 쉴 새 없이 음식을 해댔죠.

because we wanted to make sure that we were able to be stabilizing

조금이라도 안정을 되찾길 바랬어요.

any place we were joining,

우리가 도움을 주는

any city, any hospital, any elderly home.

도시, 병원, 요양원 등에서 말이죠.

Every time we made contact with them, we kept serving them food, day after day,

연락을 받게되면, 날마다 계속해서 음식을 제공했는데

so we needed to grow.

이젠 더 넓은 장소가 필요했어요.

We moved into the big coliseum.

그래서 큰 체육관으로 옮겨갔죠.

25,000 meals became 50,000 meals,

2만 5천 인분이 이제 5만 인분으로 늘었고

became, all of a sudden, the biggest restaurant in the world.

하루 아침에 세상에서 가장 큰 식당이 만들어 진 것입니다.

We were making close to 70,000 meals a day

하루에 거의 7만 인분을

from one location alone.

한 주방에서 만들었어요.

Volunteers began showing up by the hundreds.

수 백 명의 자원봉사자들이 몰려들기 시작했어요.

At one point, we got more than 7,000 volunteers

한 때 7천 명이 넘었고

that were at least one hour or more with us,

적어도 한 두 시간 정도는 우리와 함께 일했죠.

at any given moment, more than 700 people at once.

어느 순간에도, 700명 이상은 있었어요.

You saw that we began creating a movement,

우리가 어떤 운동을 시작한 샘입니다.

a movement that had a very simple idea everybody could rally behind:

누구나 지지할 수 있는 간단한 생각으로부터 시작된 운동

let's feed the hungry.

배고픈 사람들을 먹이자.

And we began making food that people could recognize,

그 곳 사람들에게 친숙한 음식을 만들었어요.

not things that come from a faraway place

아주 멀리에서 날아온

in plastic bags that you open and you cannot even smell.

열면 냄새도 나지 않는 플라스틱 포장 음식이 아니었죠.

(Laughter)

We began making the foods that people feel home.

집밥을 만든 것이죠.

People in these moments, they had this urgency of feeling they are alive,

이런 상황의 사람들에게는 빨리 아직 살아있다는 기분이 들게 해야합니다.

that somebody cares.

누군가 그들을 보살피고 있다는 것을요.

One meal at a time,

매 끼니

it didn't only become something used to bring calories to their bodies,

전에 섭취하던 정도가 아닌

calories that they needed,

그들이 필요로 하는 모든 열량을 제공했지만

but they needed something else.

또 다른 것들이 필요했어요.

They wanted to make sure that you and you and you and you,

확실하게 하고 싶었죠. 이 자리에 모든 분들이

that you were caring,

생각을 하고 있고

that we were sending the message that we are with you.

우리 모두 동참한다는 메세지를 보내는 것 말이죠.

Give us time, we are trying to fix this.

우리도 복구에 도움을 주려고 하니까, 시간을 좀 주세요.

That's what we found every time we began joining the communities.

이곳 여러 지역을 다니면서 알게된 것들입니다.

Fresh fruit began coming,

신선한 과일도 들어오기 시작했는데

even when in FEMA, they were asking me,

FEMA에 있을 때, 그 쪽 사람들이 묻더라고요.

"José, how are you able to get the food?"

"호세, 그 음식들 다 어디서 구했어요?"

Simple: by calling and paying and getting.

간단합니다: 전화하고, 돈 주고, 가져오는 거죠.

(Laughter)

We began feeding people in San Juan.

샌후안에서부터 사람들에게 음식을 해 주기 시작했어요.

Before you knew, we were feeding the 78 municipalities all across the island.

순식간에, 섬 전역 78개 지자체에 음식을 제공하고 있었죠.

We needed a plan. One kitchen alone was not going to feed the island.

계획이 필요했어요. 주방 하나에서 섬 전체를 먹여 살릴 순 없잖아요.

I went to FEMA. They kicked me out with eight armored guards and AK-47s.

FEMA에 가봤지만, AK-47 등으로 무장한 경비들에게 쫒겨났습니다.

I told them, "I want 18 kitchens around the island."

제가 말했죠, "섬에 주방 18개를 준비해 주세요."

Guess what? Three days ago, we reached our 18th kitchen

어떻게 됐을까요? 바로 3일 전에 18번째 주방이

around Puerto Rico.

푸에르토리코에 들어섰습니다.

People began being fed.

사람들은 배를 채우기 시작했어요.

Volunteers kept showing up.

자원봉사자들이 계속 모여 들었죠.

We never had any system to deliver the food, people would tell me.

사람들은 음식을 나를 방법이 없다고 했어요.

Sure, we had the system.

천만에요, 이미 체계가 갖춰져 있었어요.

The entire island of Puerto Rico was the perfect delivery system.

푸에르토리코 섬 자체가 완벽한 배송 체계였습니다.

Anybody with a truck wanted to help.

트럭이 있는 사람이면 누구나 돕기를 원했어요.

Anybody going from A to B was for us the way to be bringing hope

A에서 B 지점으로 가는 사람이 그 쪽 지역의 사람들에게 줄

and a plate and a whole meal to anybody.

음식, 그릇, 그리고 희망을 배달한 것입니다.

We began finding amazing systems to do these food trucks,

이 밥차들을 운용할 아주 좋은 체계도 마련했어요.

10 amazing food trucks.

10대의 대단한 밥차들이죠.

We began learning not to use the place that needed the food,

음식이 필요한 지역을 찾아 헤매지 않고

but the number,

숫자를 이용했어요.

the number of the apartment:

아파트 번지수 말이죠.

Lolo, a 92-year-old veteran that was surrounded by water.

92세 참전용사 롤로는 침수지역에 갇혀 있었습니다.

We began giving not only hope to people,

사람들에게 희망을 전해 준 것 뿐 아니라

but knowing their names,

통성명도 하고

checking day after day,

날마다 가서 살펴 보면서

making sure that those elderly people will never, ever again feel alone

노인들이 이 절망적인 상황에서

in a moment of disrepair.

버려진 기분까지 들지 않도록 노력했죠.

And we began going to the deeper areas,

이제 먼 지역까지 찾아가기 시작했고

places that all of a sudden, the bridges were broken,

순식간에 다리가 망가진 곳이지만 그래도 가야했어요.

but we had to go, because it was easy to stay in San Juan.

샌후안의 상황이 이제 나아졌으니까요.

We had to go to those places that actually, they really needed us.

우리의 도움이 정말 필요한 곳에 가야했죠.

And we kept going, and people kept waiting for us,

계속해서 찾아 다녔고, 사람들은 우리를 기다렸어요.

because they knew that we will always show up,

반드시 우리가 올 거라 믿고 있었고

because we will never leave them alone.

우리도 그들을 버려둘 수 없었죠.

The food trucks became our angels,

우리에게 천사같던 밥차들이

and the food trucks kept sending hope,

계속해서 희망을 배달했지만

but we saw we needed more:

더 많은 곳에서 우리의 도움이 필요했어요.

Vieques and Culebra, two islands far away from the island --

멀리 떨어져있는 섬인 비에케스와 쿨레브라에도

somebody had to be feeding them.

누군가 음식을 해줘야 했죠.

We didn't only bring food and make a hotel kitchen operation in Vieques

음식 뿐 아니라, 비에케스에 호텔 주방같은 체계를 갖추고

and bring daily food to Culebra.

쿠에브라에도 매일 음식을 가져갔어요.

We brought the first water purification system

처음으로 정수장치를

to the island of Vieques,

비에케스에 들여왔고

where we could be filtering one gallon per minute.

분당 1갤론의 식수를 만들었죠.

All of a sudden, big problems become very simple,

어느샌가, 복잡한 문제들이 단순해졌는데

low-hanging fruit solutions,

당장 할 수 있는 것부터 시작해서 가능한 일이었지

only by doing, not planning and meeting in a very big building.

아주 큰 건물에 모여서 회의하고 계획해서가 아닙니다.

(Laughter)

And then we found creative ways.

기발한 방법도 찾아냈어요.

We needed helicopters. We asked. We got.

헬리콥터가 필요하면, 요청해서 얻어냈습니다.

We needed planes. We asked, we paid, and we got.

비행기가 필요하면, 요청하고, 돈을 주기도 하고 얻어냈어요.

We kept sending food to those places that really were in need.

정말 도움이 필요한 지역들에 계속해서 음식을 제공했습니다.

And the simple ideas just become powerful.

이 단순한 생각이 이제 큰 힘을 발휘하게 된 거죠.

Volunteers will go to the edges of the island.

자원봉사자들의 손이 섬 끝자락까지 닿았어요.

All of a sudden, it was a movement.

어느샌가, 운동으로 발전한 것이죠.

The teams of World Central Kitchen

세계 중앙 주방 협회 팀들은

will be received with prayers, with songs, with claps, with hugs,

기도, 노래, 박수, 마음

with smiles.

미소 등으로 답례를 받았어요.

We were able to connect in so many corners.

정말 많은 곳에 도움을 줄 수 있었죠.

When I tell you that even the National Guard began calling us

미국 주 방위군에서도 연락이 왔어요.

because our national poor guy's guards,

이 안쓰러운 군인 아저씨들이

big heroes in a moment of chaos,

이 난리통의 큰 영웅들이

they couldn't get a simple humble plate of hot food.

따뜻한 밥 한끼 조차 제대로 못하고 있었던 겁니다.

And partnerships show up.

그리고, 협력단체들이 도착했어요.

Mercy Corps,

자선군

HSI from Homeland Security,

국토안보부의 HSI

partnerships that they didn't happen calling the top.

윗사람들 결정으로 만들어진 단체들이 아니었죠.

They happened in the hotel room, in the middle of the street,

호텔방, 길 한가운데

in the middle of the mountains.

산속 등에서 급조된 것들입니다.

We saw that by working together, we can even reach more people.

힘을 합쳐 더 많은 사람들에게 도움을 줄 수 있었어요.

Partnerships that happen by logic,

이치에 맞게 협력관계가 형성되고

and the urgency of now is put to the service of the people.

이 절박한 상황이 사람들을 움직인 것입니다.

When we have emergency relief organizations,

비상 구호단체들과 함께

we cannot be planning about how to give aid a month from now.

한달 후에나 가능한 일들을 계획하고 있을 여유가 없어요.

We have to be ready to start giving help

바로 도움을 줄 수 있게 준비가 되어있어야 합니다.

the second after something happens.

일이 터지면 바로 그 순간부터죠.

And children were fed,

어린 아이들도 먹였고

and all of a sudden, the island,

어느새, 섬 전체가

while still in a very special moment

아직은 비상 상태이고

where everything is fragile,

모든 것이 불안정하지만

we saw that an NGO like ours --

우리와 같은 비영리단체들이

we didn't want to break the private sector --

민간업자들에게 피해를 주려는 것이 아니라

that already, small restaurants were being opened,

조그만 식당들을 열었고

that somehow, normalcy,

그럭저럭 정상으로 되돌아가고 있었어요.

whatever normalcy means today in Puerto Rico, was happening.

현재 푸에르토리코 사람들이 생각하는 바로 그 정상 상태 말이죠.

We began trying to be sending the message:

사람들에게 알리기 시작했어요.

we need to start moving away from the places

이젠 안정이 된 지역에서 벗어나서

that are already stabilized

다른 곳으로 가자고 말이죠.

and keep concentrating in the areas that really need help.

정말 도움이 필요한 곳으로요.

Almost 28 days later,

more than 10 food trucks,

we served more than two million meals.

I arrived to an island trying to feed a few people,

and I saw a big problem,

심각한 문제에 부딪혔습니다.

and all of a sudden, the people of Puerto Rico saw the same problem as me,

어느새, 푸에르토리코 사람들도 저와 같은 생각을 하게됐고

and only we did one thing:

우리가 한 일은 단 하나

we began cooking.

음식을 만들기 시작했죠.

And so the people of Puerto Rico

그러자 푸에르토리코 사람들과

and the chefs of Puerto Rico, in a moment of disrepair,

그곳의 요리사들이, 이런 절망적인 순간에 사람들에게

began bringing hope,

희망을 전하기 시작한 것이죠.

not by meeting,

회의를 해서가 아니라

not by planning,

계획을 해서가 아니라

but with only one simple idea:

한가지 단순한 생각에서 말이죠:

let's start cooking and let's start feeding

음식을 만들어서

the people of Puerto Rico.

So as you said, you came the first time,

I feel so good.

NM: So tell us why, what were some of the challenges,

말씀해 주세요, 힘들었던 일과

and then when you noticed, they started coming to you to ask you.

사람들이 찾아와 도움을 청할 때, 알게된 점에 대해서요.

JA: We cannot be asking everything from Red Cross or Salvation Army.

적십자와 구세군에게 모든걸 바랄 수는 없어요.

But the idea is, I donated before to those organizations,

전에 그 단체들에 기부를 하기도 했지만, 제 생각엔

and they are the big organizations,

그들은 규모가 워낙 크기때문에

and maybe the problem is that we're expecting too much from them.

우리가 그들에게 너무 많은 기대를 하는 것은 무리예요.

It's not like they didn't do what they were supposed to do.

할 일을 안 하는 것이 아닙니다.

It's that the perception is that that's what they do.

그들의 책임이라고 생각하는 인식이죠.

But all of a sudden, you cannot get into a moment like this and wash your hands,

하지만 갑자기 이런 상황에 닥쳤는데, 한가하게 손이나 닦으면서

and you say somebody else is going to be picking it up.

나머지는 누군가 어떻게 하겠지 하고 말할 수는 없잖아요.

We had a simple problem that had a very simple solution.

우리에겐 단순한 해법이 있는 단순한 문제였죠.

This was not a faraway country

멀리 떨어져있는 곳도

or the Green Zone in Baghdad.

바그다드의 UN 완충구역도 아니잖아요.

This was American soil,

이곳은 미국령입니다.

a beautiful place called Puerto Rico,

푸에르토리코라 불리는 아름다운 곳이죠.

with hundreds, thousands of restaurants and people willing to help,

수 백, 수 천개의 식당과 사람들이 돕기를 원했지만

but all of a sudden, we had people hungry,

어느샌가, 사람들은 굶주렸고

and we didn't have a plan how to feed them in the short term.

단 시간 안에 그 사람들을 먹일 아무 계획이 없었어요.

So yes, FEMA, to a degree, was thinking about how to feed the people.

맞아요, FEMA도 어느 정도는 사람들에게 음식을 공급할 방법을 찾고 있었어요.

Red Cross didn't have the right answers,

적십자는 좋은 방법을 찾지 못했는데

because Southern Baptist Church, the biggest food organization in America,

미국에서 가장 큰 식량 지원단체이고 제겐 영웅과도 같은 남부 침례교단을

my heroes, they were never called to Puerto Rico.

푸에르토리코에 데리고 오지 못해서죠.

When you see the Red Cross delivering food in America after a hurricane,

미국에 허리케인이 훑고간 후, 적십자에서 음식을 공급하는데

it's Southern Baptist Church doing it.

사실은 남부 침례교단에서 하는 일이에요.

Salvation Army came and asked me for 420 meals on a Wednesday rainy night

비가 오던 한 수요일 밤에 구세군에서 동네 노인들에게 줄

for a local elderly shop.

420인분의 음식을 부탁했어요.

I love to help the Salvation Army,

저도 구세군을 돕고 싶지만

but in my world, they are the ones who are supposed to be helping us

제가 알고있는 세상에선 곤경에 처한 사람들에게

to answer those calls of help.

도움을 주는 것은 그들의 일이잖아요.

Thursday morning is when I wake up super worried

목요일 아침에는 눈 뜨자마자 걱정이 몰려왔어요.

that actually we didn't have the plan to feed the island.

섬 사람들을 먹일 아무 계획이 없었거든요.

And some people will say maybe you are making the problem

어떤 사람들은 제가 수선을 떤다고

bigger than it was.

말했을 수도 있을 거예요.

Well, we had hundreds and hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of organizations

글쎄요, 수도 없이 많은 단체에서

knocking on our door, asking for a tray of food,

우리를 찾았고, 밥 한끼를 요청해 왔습니다.

so if that's not proof that the need was real ...

이게 그 절실했던 상황을 보여주는 것이 아니라면 ...

We cannot be feeding people in America anymore with MREs

미국에선 이제 사람들에게 군용 휴대식량을 주지 못해요.

or something like you open and, you know,

이렇게 따서 주는

I was giving to this little cat a little bit of those same foods --

고양이 먹이 같은 것 말이죠.

(Laughter)

and then I gave them the chicken and rice we made,

그래서 닭고기와 쌀밥을 준비했고

and they went for the chicken and rice.

사람들은 닭고기와 쌀밥을 먹기위해 찾아왔죠.

They don't even eat that themselves.

We can feed humanity for a day or two or five,

하루, 이틀, 닷새 동안 사람들을 먹일 수는 있지만

but those MREs cost, like, 12, 14, 15, 20 dollars to the American taxpayer.

그 휴대식량에도 국민 세금이 12, 14, 15, 20 달러나 들어가거든요.

It's OK for certain moments,

필요할 때가 있죠.

during battle,

전쟁할 때 처럼

but not to be feeding Americans for weeks and weeks and weeks,

하지만, 몇 주 동안 사람들에게 줄 수는 없습니다.

when actually, you can be hiring the local private business community

사실, 그 지역 자영업자들을 고용해서

to do the same job better, creating local jobs,

이와 같은 일을 하게 하면, 일자리도 만들고

helping the local economy to come back,

지역 경제도 활성화하고

and in the process making sure that everything was going to go back

모든 상황이 최대한 빨리 정상으로

as normal as quick as possible.

되돌아 가는데 도움이 될텐데 말이죠.

That's where we began cooking.

바로 그 때 우리는 음식을 만들기 시작했어요.

You were there with me,

저와 거기 같이 있었는데

and that's why we spent every single dollar we had in our credit cards.

NM: So what's the situation now?

그래서 지금 상황은 어떤가요?

You know, it's been a month.

이제 한달이 다 되갑니다.

You said there's been some improvements in San Juan

샌후안은 많이 좋아졌고

and focus on the areas outside,

다른 지역에 집중한다고 하셨죠.

but obviously there are still major challenges, and what's next?

분명히 아직 할 일이 많이 있을텐데, 앞으로의 계획은요?

JA: There are. So what's next is we slowly began going down

아주 많죠. 그래서 조금씩 더 먼 지역을 찾아갔어요.

after, more or less, FEMA let us know

FEMA로부터 통보를 받고 나서죠.

that they thought they had everything under control

이제 모든게 순조롭게 돌아가서

and we were no longer needed,

우리가 더 이상 필요없다고 생각했나봐요.

but you only believe everything so much.

그런데 듣는 대로 다 믿을 순 없잖아요.

We moved from the big place you saw, 60,000 meals a day,

보신 것처럼, 6만 인분을 만들어 내는 큰 장소에서 벗어나

to another one, as big, but more strategically located,

규모는 비슷하지만, 보다 전략적으로 위치해 있어

also cheaper,

운영비가 덜 들고

where we are going to be making 20-25,000 meals a day,

하루에 2만에서 2만 5천인분을 만들 수 있는 주방을 만들었어요.

and then we are leaving four, five, six kitchens

그리고 4개에서 6개 정도의 주방을

strategically located around the island,

섬 전역에 전략적으로 위치시켰어요.

very high up in the mountains, in the poor areas.

빈민지역의 높은 산 꼭대기에도 말이죠.

We got a lot of data.

데이터도 넘쳐났죠.

We know who is using SNAPs, who is using food stamps,

누가 저소득층 영양보충 프로그램을, 누가 식료품 할인 구매권을

the cards.

누가 카드를 쓰는 지 알 수 있었어요.

We know who has them and we know who is using them.

누가 뭘 가지고 있고, 또 누가 사용하는지 알게 된 거죠.

So in the parts of the island where nobody is using them,

이런 것들이 전혀 사용되고 있지 않은

those are the parts of the island where we are going to be focusing our efforts.

섬 안의 지역들에 우리의 노력을 집중했습니다.

So it's amazing how sometimes simple data can give you a clue

of who are the people in need.

So we went to a town called Morovis.

모로비스라는 동네에 갔어요.

Beautiful.

The best chicken restaurant in the history of mankind.

DT: Sounds good.

JA: So I saw the chicken. We were bringing sandwiches.

샌드위치를 나르고 있는데, 닭요리 집이 눈에 들어왔어요.

I stopped. I was with these Homeland Security officers.

그때 미 국토부 직원들과 잠깐 멈춰서

We ate the chicken.

닭고기를 먹었죠.

I left to drop these sandwiches in this other place called San Lorenzo.

그리고, '샌로렌조' 지역에 샌드위치를 주려고 다시 출발했죠.

San Lorenzo was critical, because the bridge was broken,

샌로렌조는 다리가 망가져서 상태가 심각했습니다.

and so it was an island inside the island,

섬 안에 또다른 섬이 생긴 셈이죠.

a little community surrounded by water.

조그만 마을인데 물에 둘러쌓였어요.

Everybody told us, "It's a disaster down there."

다들 말했죠, "그 쪽은 엉망이에요."

We dropped the sandwiches.

샌드위치를 전해줬어요.

I went back to Morovis, and I thought,

모로비스로 돌아가서 생각했는데

you know, if it's a disaster, sandwiches is not enough.

그렇게 엉망이라면, 샌드위치로는 택도 없잖아요.

I brought 120 chickens,

그래서 닭고기 120마리와

with yucca and with rice,

유카, 쌀밥을 사서

and we went back to that broken bridge,

다리가 무너진 그 곳에 갔죠.

we crossed the river,

강을 건넜는데

water up to everywhere.

곳곳이 물에 잠겨 있었습니다.

We arrived with the 120 chickens,

닭고기 120인분을 들고가서

we dropped the food,

사람들에게 나눠줬고

and the community were very thankful, but they told us,

마을 사람들이 아주 고맙다고 하면서 말했어요,

"We're OK, we don't need more food.

"우린 괜찮아요, 더 음식을 안 줘도 돼요.

We have gas, we have money,

연료도, 돈도

we have good food and our water is clean.

괜찮은 음식도, 깨끗한 물도 있으니까요.

Take care of the other communities around us that are in more need."

근처에 더 도움이 필요한 곳을 도와주세요."

You see, communication is key.

이래서 정보가 아주 중요합니다.

In these scenarios, we can be relying on fake news

이런 상황에서는, 거짓 정보에 속기도 하고

or we can be having the real information that we can make smart decisions

정확한 정보를 얻게되면 본질적인 문제들을 해결할 수 있는

to really take care of the true issues.

현명한 판단도 할 수 있어요.

That's what we are doing.

그것이 바로 우리가 하고 있는 일입니다.

NM: It was an amazing operation,

which is pretty incredible.

And I think, at the same time, really sort of setting a model

for how this can be done, hopefully, moving forward.

I mean, I think that's one of the big learnings out of this --

DT: This is possible. You know, people can replicate this.

JA: But I'm going to stop coming to watch TED Talks,

And then my wife told me,

집사람이 저한테 말하더라고요.

"Man, you told me you were going to cook a thousand meals a day.

"하루에 천 인분만 한다고 했잖아요.

I cannot leave you alone for a day."

하루라도 그냥 내버려두면 안되겠어요."

But I hope that World Central Kitchen --

그런데 제가 세계 중앙 주방 협회에 바라는 건

you know, one thing we did I didn't say:

우리가 했던 일 중에 말하지 않은 것이 있어요.

I picked up the phone and I began calling people,

전화를 집어 들고 도움이 될 만한 전문가들에게

people that I thought had expertise that could help us.

연락하기 시작했어요.

So I picked up the phone and I called a company called Bon Appétit, Fedele.

보나쁘띠와 피델레 같은 곳에도 연락했죠.

Bon Appétit's one of the big catering companies.

보나쁘띠는 가장 큰 출장 음식업체 중 하나입니다.

They do food for Google and for arenas.

구글이나 아레나 같은 곳에서 사내식당을 운영하죠.

They're out of California.

캘리포니아에 있어요.

They belong to a bigger group called Compass.

이들은 모두 컴파스라는 그룹 소속입니다.

And I told them, "You know what?

그래서 제가 말했죠, "아시죠?

I need cooks, and I need cooks that can do volume

요리사들이 필요한데, 많은 양을 해낼 수 있고

and that can do good, quality volume."

몸에도 좋은 양질의 음식을 할 수 있는 요리사들이요."

In less than 24 hours, I began getting people and chefs.

24시간도 안되서, 여러 사람들과 요리사들이 모였어요.

At one point, we got 16 of the best chefs that America can offer.

한번은, 16명의 미국 최고의 요리사들이 모였죠.

You see, America is an amazing heart country

정말 미국은 후한 나라예요.

that always is sending their best.

항상 최고의 사람들을 보내주잖아요.

What we've been learning over the years

우리가 몇 년에 걸쳐 알게 된 건

is that those chefs of America are going to be playing a role

그 미국 요리사들이 중요한 역할을 할 거라는 거죠..

in how we are going to be feeding America and maybe other parts of the world

유사시 어떤 식으로, 미국이나 어쩌면 세상 다른 지역까지

in times of need.

음식을 공급할 것인지 말이죠.

What we need to start

지금부터 우리가 할 일은

is bringing the right expertise where the expertise is needed.

전문성이 필요한 곳에 그에 맞는 전문성을 도입해야 합니다.

Sometimes I have a feeling, like with FEMA,

가끔 느끼지만, FEMA 같은 기관에서는

we are bringing the wrong expertise in the areas that it's not even needed.

전문성을 적재적소에 제대로 활용하지 못하고 있어요.

The people of FEMA are great people.

FEMA 사람들은 아주 대단합니다.

The men and women are smart,

남녀할 것 없이 아주 똑똑하고

they are prepared,

준비되어 있지만

but they live under this amazing hierarchy pyramidal organizational chart

피라미드처럼 엄청나게 쌓여있는 조직체계에 발이 묶여있어요.

that everybody falls out of their own weight.

진을 빼게 되죠, 아주.

We need to be empowering people to be successful.

사람들에게 힘을 싫어줘서 성공할 수 있도록 해야합니다.

What we did was a flatter organizational chart

그래서 우리는 보다 단순하게 조직을 짜서

where everybody was owning the situation

누구든 맡은 일에 책임감을 가지고

and we all made quick decisions to solve the problems on the spot.

현장에서 바로 문제 해결을 위한 결정을 할 수 있게 했어요.
