The difference between being "not racist" and antiracist | Ibram X. Kendi

And so, a few weeks ago,

on the same day we learned about the brutal murder of George Floyd,

we also learned that a white woman in Central Park

who chose not to leash her dog

And of course, when we learned about that through a video,

You know, your book, "How to Be an Antiracist,"

IXK: Sure. And so I mentioned in my talk

that the heartbeat of racism is denial,

you do make that distinction, then, between not racist and anti-racist.

I guess, could you talk a little bit more about that and break that down?

What is the difference between the two?

a not racist is a racist who is in denial,

And so I'm saying this because literally slaveholders, slave traders,

They would say things like,

And why do you think it has been so hard

IXK: I think because it takes a lot of work to be anti-racist.

You have to be willing to admit that you were wrong.

I think it's also the case of,

And so people tend to define "racist"

This is essential to who a person is.

Someone becomes a racist.

And then they also connect a racist with a bad, evil person.

But that's actually not how we should be defining racist.

Racist is a descriptive term.

It describes what a person is saying or doing in any given moment,

So if white Americans commonly say, "I'm not racist,"

CS: You touched on this a bit in your beginning talk here,

IXK: I think it's a direct relationship,

In other words, you're going to believe that the reason why black people

There's certainly black individuals

obviously these protests and this movement have led to some progress:

IXK: I don't actually think necessarily

there's a singular policy priority.

I mean, if someone was to force me to answer,

I would probably say two,

She asks, "How do you suggest liberal white organizations

And so I would make a few suggestions.

One, for several decades now,

And so to me, the way in which we make this a nonpartisan issue

they're not saying that,

IXK: So I think part of the concern that people have about mental exhaustion

that they don't ever want to make a mistake,

and I think to be anti-racist

is to make mistakes,

For us, what's critical is to have those very clear definitions

The other thing I think is important for us to realize

So I define a racist idea

as any idea that suggests a racial group is superior

or inferior to another racial group in any way.

And I use the term racial group

as opposed to race

because every race is a collection of racialized intersectional groups,

To give an example about black women,

is love,

is loving one's country,

loving one's humanity,

인간성을 사랑하며

loving one's relatives and family and friends,

이웃과 가족과 친구를 사랑하며

and certainly loving oneself.

자기 자신을 사랑하는 마음.

And I consider love to be a verb.

저는 사랑을 행동이라 생각합니다.

I consider love to be,

사랑이란

I'm helping another, and even myself,

남을 도와주며 자기 자신까지도 도와

to constantly grow into a better form of myself,

더 나은 자신으로 끊임없이 성장하며

of themselves, that they've expressed who they want to be.

자기가 어떤 사람이 되고 싶은지 스스로 표현하는 행동입니다.

And so to love this country and to love humanity

이 나라를 사랑하고 인간을 사랑함으로써

is to push humanity constructively

더 건설적인 방향으로 인류를 이끌고

to be a better form of itself,

더 나은 모습으로 거듭나야 합니다.

and there's no way we're going to be a better form,

인종차별주의라는 족쇄를 차고 있는 한

there's no way we can build a better humanity,

개인은 발전할 수 없으며

while we still have on the shackles of racism.

인류 또한 발전할 수 없습니다.
