let's talk about what is never going to change about storytelling.

Obviously, I think good stories are never going to change,

분명히, 좋은 이야기는 꼭 있어야 겠죠.

the need for people to gather together and exchange their stories

사람들이 모여서 서로 이야기를 나누고

and to talk about the things that feel universal,

공감하는 것들을 얘기하고픈 욕구,

the idea that we all feel a compelling need to watch stories,

이야기를 보고, 전하고, 공유하고 싶은

to tell stories, to share stories --

강한 욕구를 느끼는 것 말이죠.

sort of the gathering around the campfire

야영장의 모닥불 앞에 모여 앉아

to discuss the things that tell each one of us

함께 사는 세상이란 걸 서로에게

that we are not alone in the world.

말해주는 것과 같겠죠.

Those things to me are never going to change.

저는 이런 것들이 절대 바뀌지 않을 것 같아요.

That essence of storytelling is never going to change.

그런 스토리텔링의 본질은 절대 바뀌지 않을 거에요.

CS: OK. In preparation for this conversation,

신디: 좋습니다. 이 시간을 준비하면서,

I checked in with Susan Lyne,

who was running ABC Entertainment

'그레이스 아나토미'가 방영될 때

when you were working on "Grey's Anatomy" --

SR: Yes.

숀다: 그랬군요.

CS: And she said that there was this indelible memory she had

신디: 잊지 못 할 일 하나를 얘기해 주더라구요.

of your casting process,

숀다씨가 캐스팅 과정에서,

where without discussing it with any of the executives,

어떤 제작사 간부와도 상의하지 않고

you got people coming in to read for your scripts,

배우들을 불러 대본을 읽게 하고

and every one of them was the full range of humanity,

각자 개성이 뚜렷한 배우들에게

you did not type anyone in any way,

고정된 역할을 주지 않아서

and that it was completely surprising.

아주 놀랐다고 하더군요.

So she said, in addition to retraining the studio executives,

또 말하길, 제작사 간부들에게 한수 가르쳐 줬을 뿐 아니라,

you also, she feels,

그분 생각에

and I think this is -- I agree,

제 생각도 같습니다만

retrained the expectations of the American TV audience.

So what else does the audience not yet realize that it needs?

그럼 시청자들이 아직 그 필요성을 인식하지 못하고 있는 것들이 있나요?

SR: What else does it not yet realize?

숀다: 아직 인식하지 못하는 것들이요?

Well, I mean, I don't think we're anywhere near there yet.

글쎄요, 전 지금 그런 말하긴 너무 이르다고 생각해요.

I mean, we're still in a place

그러니까, 우린 아직

in which we're far, far behind what looks like the real world in actuality.

현실과 많이 동떨어져 있어요.

I wasn't bringing in a bunch of actors

제가 여러 개성있는 배우들을

who looked very different from one another

불러들인 것은

simply because I was trying to make a point,

단지 뭘 보여주려는 것도 아니고

and I wasn't trying to do anything special.

뭔가 특별한 것을 계획한 것도 아니었어요.

It never occurred to me that that was new, different or weird.

그 자체가 새롭거나, 색다르거나, 또 별나다고 생각하지 않았거든요.

I just brought in actors because I thought they were interesting

단지 관심이 가는 배우들을 불러 모았을 뿐인데

and to me, the idea that it was completely surprising to everybody --

사람들이 놀랐다는 사실도

I didn't know that for a while.

저는 한동안 알지 못했거든요.

I just thought: these are the actors I want to see play these parts.

단지 그 배우들이 어떻게 역할을 소화해 내는지 보고 싶었어요.

I want to see what they look like if they read.

그들이 대본을 읽는 모습이 궁금했고,

We'll see what happens.

한번 지켜 보고 싶었죠.

So I think the interesting thing that happens is

제 생각에 재미있었던 건

that when you look at the world through another lens,

다른 렌즈를 통해 세상을 보면,

when you're not the person normally in charge of things,

평소에 책임을 지는 자리에 있는 사람이 아니라면

it just comes out a different way.

모든 것이 다르게 보인다는 것이죠.

CS: So you now have this big machine that you run,

신디: 그래도 지금은 큰 조직을 책임지는

as a titan -- as you know, last year when she gave her talk --

거물이시잖아요, 아시는 것처럼, 작년에도 강연하셨죠.

she's a titan.

거물 맞으세요.

So what do you think is going to happen as we go on?

그럼 앞으로의 전망은 어떨까요?

There's a huge amount of money involved in producing these shows.

이런 방송을 제작하려면 비용이 아주 많이 들잖아요.

While the tools of making stories have gone and gotten greatly democratized,

이야기를 만드는 방법들이 많이 대중화가 됐지만,

there's still this large distribution:

여전히 배분할 곳들이 많아요:

people who rent networks, who rent the audience to advertisers

예를 들어, 네트워크를 임대하고, 광고주들에게 홍보를 하는 사람들에게도

and make it all pay.

돈이 들어가니까요.

How do you see the business model changing now that anyone can be a storyteller?

누구나 작가가 될 수 있는 지금 방송사업에는 어떤 변화가 있을까요?

SR: I think it's changing every day.

숀다: 하루 하루 달라지는 것 같아요.

I mean, the rapid, rapid change that's happening is amazing.

그 속도가 놀랄 정도로 빠르죠.

And I feel -- the panic is palpable,

그리고 제가 느끼기에도, 분명히 혼란스러워요.

and I don't mean that in a bad way.

그게 나쁘다는 건 아니에요.

I think it's kind of exciting.

오히려 흥분되는 일이죠.

The idea that there's sort of an equalizer happening,

평등한 기회가 주어지고,

that sort of means that anybody can make something, is wonderful.

누구나 뭔가 창작할 수 있다는 건 정말 좋은 거죠.

I think there's some scary in the idea that you can't find the good work now.

좋은 작품을 찾는데 많은 시간이 걸리는 약간의 부담은 있어요.

There's so much work out there.

세상엔 정말 많은 작품들이 있잖아요.

I think there's something like 417 dramas on television right now

현재 417개 정도의 드라마가 방영되고 있는데,

at any given time in any given place,

모든 방송과 시간대를 통틀어서요,

but you can't find them.

하지만 찾기가 힘들어요.

You can't find the good ones.

좋은 작품들 말이죠.

So there's a lot of bad stuff out there because everybody can make something.

누구나 뭔가를 만들 수 있기 때문에 질이 안 좋은 것들이 많아요.

It's like if everybody painted a painting.

누구나 그림을 그릴 수 있다는 것과 같죠.

You know, there's not that many good painters.

알다시피, 좋은 화가들은 많지 않잖아요.

But finding the good stories, the good shows,

그래서 좋은 이야기와 방송을 찾는 것이

is harder and harder and harder.

점점 더 어려워지고 있어요.

Because if you have one tiny show over here on AMC

조그만 방송들이 여기 AMC에도

and one tiny show over here over there,

또 여기 저기 다른 방송국에서도 있다면

finding where they are becomes much harder.

어디에 좋은 방송이 있는지 찾기 힘든 것과 같잖아요.

So I think that ferreting out the gems

그래서 옥석을 고르고,

and finding out who made the great webisode and who made this,

그 멋진 '웨비소드'는 누가 만들었는지 찾아보면서,

it's -- I mean, think about the poor critics

한번, 불쌍한 평론가들을 생각해보세요.

who now are spending 24 hours a day

지금도 하루 24시간

trapped in their homes watching everything.

집에 틀어 박혀 TV에 나오는 모든 방송들을 봐야하는 사람들이요.

It's not an easy job right now.

정말 쉬운 일이 아닙니다.

So the distribution engines are getting more and more vast,

배급의 방식들은 점점 더 방대해지고

but finding the good programming for everybody in the audience

모든 시청자들을 만족하게 하는 좋은 방송을 찾는 건

is getting harder.

점점 어려워지고 있어요.

And unlike the news,

그리고, 뉴스와 같이

where everything's getting winnowed down to just who you are,

거르고 걸러서 원하는 정보만 얻을 수 있는 것들과 달리

television seems to be getting --

TV는 점점

and by television I mean anything you can watch, television shows on --

제가 말하는 TV는 시청이 가능한 모든 방송들이에요.

seems to be getting wider and wider and wider.

그 영역이 넓어지고 있는 듯 해요.

And so anybody's making stories,

그래서 누구나 이야기를 만들고

and the geniuses are sometimes hidden.

천재들이 가끔은 빛을 못 보기도 하죠.

But it's going to be harder to find,

그들을 발굴하는 것이 점점 더 어려워 질테고,

and at some point that will collapse.

언젠간 거품이 빠질 거예요.

People keep talking about peak TV.

자체 제작물이 요즘 회자되고 있죠.

I don't know when that's going to happen.

언제가 될지 모르지만

I think at some point it'll collapse a little bit

이것도 어느 순간 거품이 좀 빠지고

and we'll, sort of, come back together.

다같이 제자리를 찾겠죠.

I don't know if it will be network television.

그게 공중파 방송일지

I don't know if that model is sustainable.

그 형태가 지속될 수 있는지도 모르겠어요.

CS: What about the model

신디: 그럼 현재 아마존과 넷플릭스에서

that Amazon and Netflix are throwing a lot of money around right now.

많은 투자를 하고 있는 것은요?

SR: That is true.

숀다: 사실이에요.

I think it's an interesting model.

흥미로운 방식이죠.

I think there's something exciting about it.

아주 고무적인 뭔가가 있어요.

For content creators, I think there's something exciting about it.

컨텐츠 제작자들에게 아주 흥분되는 일이죠.

For the world, I think there's something exciting about it.

세상 모든 사람들에게도 아주 흥분되는 일이겠죠.

The idea that there are programs now

세계 각국의 인물이 등장하고,

that can be in multiple languages with characters from all over the world

다양한 언어로 즐길 수 있고,

that are appealing and come out for everybody at the same time

동시에 모든 이들의 마음을 끌 수 있는 방송이 있다는 건

is exciting.

아주 흥분되는 일이에요.

I mean, I think the international sense that television can now take on

TV 방송도 이제 국제적 감각을 갖춘다는게

makes sense to me,

일리있는 말이고

that programming can now take on.

이미 그런 추세입니다.

Television so much is made for, like -- here's our American audience.

TV 방송이 만들어 지는 건 보통, 여기 미국 시청자들을 위해,

We make these shows,

방송을 만들고

and then they shove them out into the world

세계 각국에 뿌리고

and hope for the best,

좋은 결과가 있길 바라죠.

as opposed to really thinking about the fact that America is not it.

미국 시장이 아니란 사실조차 고려하지 않고 말이죠.

I mean, we love ourselves and everything, but it's not i.

우리 모두 자부심이 대단한 건 알지만, 그건 아니죠.

And we should be taking into account the fact

이야기를 하면서, 꼭 명심해야 할 것은

that there are all of these other places in the world

세상엔 우리가 관심을 가져야 할

that we should be interested in while we're telling stories.

다양한 곳들이 있다는 사실입니다.

It makes the world smaller.

그렇게 세상은 더 작아지는 거죠.

I don't know.

잘은 모르지만,

I think it pushes forward the idea that the world is a universal place,

세상은 하나고, 모든 사람들이 우리의 이야기를 즐길 수 있다는

and our stories become universal things.

생각을 실천에 옮긴다고나 할까요.

We stop being other.

우린 더 이상 남이 아닌 것이죠.

CS: You've pioneered, as far as I can see,

신디: 제 생각엔, 신작 발표 때도

interesting ways to launch new shows, too.

아주 흥미로운 방법을 시도하셨어요.

I mean, when you launched "Scandal" in 2012,

2012년, "스캔들"을 처음 선보였을 때

there was this amazing groundswell of support on Twitter

트위터에 엄청난 지지가 있었고

the likes of which nobody had seen before.

전에 없이 많은 사람들이 '좋아요'를 눌렀어요.

Do you have any other tricks up your sleeve

다음 선보일 작품을 위해

when you launch your next one?

미리 준비하신 건 없나요?

What do you think will happen in that regard?

어떤 반응을 기대하세요?

SR: We do have some interesting ideas.

숀다: 재밌는 아이디어가 좀 있어요.

We have a show called "Still Star-Crossed" coming out this summer.

올 여름 방영 예정인 "끝나지 않은 이야기"를 준비하면서

We have some interesting ideas for that.

재밌는 구상을 해 봤는데,

I'm not sure if we're going to be able to do them in time.

정작 제 시간에 할 수 있을지는 모르겠어요.

I thought they were fun.

정말 재밌고 웃긴 건데 말이죠.

But the idea that we would live-tweet our show

우리 드라마를 트위터에서 생방송했던 건

was really just us thinking that would be fun.

그냥 우리들끼리 재밌게 해 보려는 것이었어요.

We didn't realize that the critics would start to live-tweet along with us.

평론가들이 함께 할 것이라곤 예상하지 못했죠.

But the fans -- getting people to be a part of it,

하지만 팬들은, 사람들을 한데 모으려고,

making it more of a campfire --

야영장에 모닥불을 피우는 것과 비슷한데

you know, when you're all on Twitter together

트위터라는 공간에 모여서

and you're all talking together,

함께 소통하는 건

it is more of a shared experience,

공유하는 경험이라고 할 수 있죠.

and finding other ways to make that possible

그것을 가능케 하는 새로운 방법을 찾고

and finding other ways to make people feel engaged

사람들이 그 소통의 일부라는 것을 느낄 수 있게 하는 새로운 방법을 찾는 것은

is important.

아주 중요합니다.

CS: So when you have all those different people making stories

신디: 다양한 사람들이 이야기를 만들지만

and only some of them are going to break through

그들 중 일부만이 빛을 보고

and get that audience somehow,

시청자들의 관심을 끌 수 있을텐데

how do you think storytellers will get paid?

스토리텔러들은 어떤 식으로 돈을 벌거라고 생각하세요?

SR: I actually have been struggling with this concept as well.

숀다: 사실 저도 그에 대한 고민이 많아요.

Is it going to be a subscriber model?

구독 시청자의 수에 따라서?

Are people going to say, like, I'm going to watch this particular person's shows,

사람들은 특정인의 방송만 선택해 시청하려고 하는데,

and that's how we're going to do it?

우리도 그에 맞춰 제작을 해야 하나?

CS: I think we should buy a passport to Shondaland. Right?

신디: '숀다랜드' 입장권은 사둬야겠죠. 안그런가요?

SR: I don't know about that, but yeah. That's a lot more work for me.

숀다: 그건 잘 모르겠고, 어쨌든 전 할 일이 훨씬 많아졌어요.

I do think that there are going to be different ways,

다른 방법들이 나올 텐데,

but I don't know necessarily.

그렇다고 그게 뭔지 아는 건 아니에요.

I mean, I'll be honest and say a lot of content creators

솔직하게 말해서, 많은 컨텐츠 제작자들은

are not necessarily interested in being distributors,

배급에 까지 관심을 가지진 않죠.

mainly because what I dream of doing

결국 꿈 꾸는 것은

is creating content.

컨텐츠의 창작이니까요.

I really love to create content.

컨텐츠를 창작하는 일에 정말 푹 빠져있어요.

I want to get paid for it

돈을 벌고 싶기도 하고,

and I want to get paid the money that I deserve to get paid for it,

정당한 대가를 받고 싶지만,

and there's a hard part in finding that.

말처럼 쉽지만은 않아요.

But I also want it to be made possible

그래도, 그렇게 만들어야죠.

for, you know, the people who work with me,

저와 함께 일하고,

the people who work for me,

저를 위해 일하는 사람들 모두

everybody to sort of get paid in a way, and they're all making a living.

돈을 벌면서, 삶을 꾸려나갈 수 있게 말이죠.

How it gets distributed is getting harder and harder.

그 배분이 점점 더 어려워 지는건 사실이에요.

CS: How about the many new tools,

신디: 여러가지 새로운 기술에 대해선 어떻게 생각하세요?

you know, VR, AR ...

그러니까, 가상현실, 증강현실 같은 ...

I find it fascinating that you can't really binge-watch,

몰아서 보거나, 앞으로 돌려서 볼 수 없는게

you can't fast-forward in those things.

좀 놀랍긴 한데요.

What do you see as the future of those for storytelling?

미래의 스토리텔링에 어떤 영향이 있을까요?

SR: I spent a lot of time in the past year

숀다: 작년에 많은 시간과 관심을 두고

just exploring those,

여러가지를 해봤어요.

getting lots of demonstrations and paying attention.

시연도 많이 받아 보고, 신경을 많이 썼죠.

I find them fascinating,

아주 흥미롭다고 생각해요.

mainly because I think that --

왜냐면 제 생각엔 주로

I think most people think of them for gaming,

대부분의 사람들은 그 기술들이 비디오 게임이나,

I think most people think of them for things like action,

뭔가 행동을 동반하는 것으로 생각하는데,

and I think that there is a sense of intimacy

그 기술들 자체에 친밀감을 주는

that is very present in those things,

무언가가 존재한다고 생각해요.

the idea that -- picture this,

그건 바로 -- 상상해 보세요,

you can sit there and have a conversation with Fitz,

거기 앉은 채로 '피츠'와 대화를 나눈다든지,

or at least sit there while Fitz talks to you,

아니면, 그가 하는 이야기를 거기 앉아서 듣는 것 말이죠.

President Fitzgerald Grant III,

while he talks to you

about why he's making a choice that he makes,

and it's a very heartfelt moment.

정말 진심으로 느껴지겠죠.

And instead of you watching a television screen,

TV 화면을 보는 대신,

you're sitting there next to him, and he's having this conversation.

옆에 앉아서, 그와 대화를 나누는 거죠.

Now, you fall in love with the man

이제, TV 화면 안에서 연기하는

while he's doing it from a television screen.

그와 사랑에 빠지게 됩니다.

Imagine sitting next to him,

그 사람 옆에 앉아 있거나,

or being with a character like Huck who's about to execute somebody.

누군가 암살하기 직전인 '허크'와 같이 있다고 상상해보세요.

And instead of having a scene

극 중 상대역에게

where, you know, he's talking to another character very rapidly,

정신없이 말하는 장면을 연기하는 대신

he goes into a closet and turns to you and tells you, you know,

옷장으로 들어가 돌아서서 당신한테 말을 하는 거죠.

what's going to happen and why he's afraid and nervous.

무슨 일이 일어날지, 그리고 그가 왜 긴장하고 겁이 나 있는지 말이죠.

It's a little more like theater, and I'm not sure it would work,

좀 더 연극 공연 같을 텐데, 그게 잘 될진 모르겠지만,

but I'm fascinating by the concept of something like that

그런 종류의 구상과 그것이 시청자들에게 무엇을 의미하는지

and what that would mean for an audience.

아주 큰 흥미를 느끼고 있어요.

And to get to play with those ideas would be interesting,

그런 아이디어의 활용은 아주 재밌을 것 같아요.

and I think, you know, for my audience, the people who watch my shows,

그리고 제 작품의 시청자들은

which is, you know, women 12 to 75,

아시다시피, 12세에서 75세 사이 여성인데

there's something interesting in there for them.

그들의 관심을 끌 만한 것들도 있어요.

CS: And how about the input of the audience?

신디: 시청자들의 의견은 어떤가요?

How interested are you in the things

얼마나 관심이 있으세요?

where the audience can actually go up to a certain point

시청자들이 실제로 어떤 장면에서,

and then decide, oh wait, I'm going to choose my own adventure.

내가 한번 결정해 볼까 하는 것 말이죠.

I'm going to run off with Fitz or I'm going to run off with --

피츠하고 몰래 도망쳐야지, 아니면 누구하고 같이

SR: Oh, the choose- your-own-adventure stories.

숀다: 아, 선택 상황극이요.

I have a hard time with those,

제가 고민하고 있는 문제인데요.

and not necessarily because I want to be in control of everything,

모든 걸 제 뜻대로만 하고 싶어서가 아니라

but because when I'm watching television or I'm watching a movie,

TV나 영화를 보면서

I know for a fact that a story is not as good

실제로 제가, 다른 분들의 작품 속 인물들의

when I have control over exactly what's going to happen

운명을 좌지우지 한다면,

to somebody else's character.

전체적인 이야기가 좋아질 수가 없거든요.

You know, if I could tell you exactly what I wanted to happen to Walter White,

제가 원하는 걸 '월터 와이트'에게 직접 말할 수 있다면 저는 좋겠지만,

that's great, but the story is not the same, and it's not as powerful.

그러면 이야기 자체도 달라지고, 감동도 덜 할거에요.

You know, if I'm in charge of how "The Sopranos" ends,

제 맘대로 "소프라노스"의 결말을 정할 수 있다면 좋겠죠.

then that's lovely and I have an ending that's nice and satisfying,

제 맘에 쏙 드는 멋진 마지막 장면이 나오겠지만,

but it's not the same story and it's not the same emotional impact.

더 이상 같은 이야기도 아니고, 감동도 덜 할꺼에요.

CS: I can't stop imagining what that might be.

신디: 어떤 결말이 나올 지 계속 상상하게 되는데요.

Sorry, you're losing me for a minute.

미안해요, 제가 잠깐 딴 생각을 했네요.

SR: But what's wonderful is I don't get to imagine it,

숀다: 하지만 놀라운 건 제가 상상하지 않는다는 거죠.

because Vince has his own ending,

왜냐면 '빈스'에겐 그만의 결말이 있고

and it makes it really powerful to know that somebody else has told.

누군가 들려 주기 때문에 큰 감동을 느낄 수 있는 거죠.

You know, if you could decide that, you know,

맘대로 결말을 낼 수 있다면, 예를 들어,

in "Jaws," the shark wins or something,

"죠스"에서 그 상어가 마지막까지 살아 남기라도 한다면,

it doesn't do what it needs to do for you.

여러분들을 위한 결말은 아니겠죠.

The story is the story that is told,

이야기는 전해 들어야 맛이 나죠.

and you can walk away angry and you can walk away debating

화가 나기도, 토론을 하기도

and you can walk away arguing,

또 말다툼을 하기도 하는데

but that's why it works.

그게 바로 이야기의 힘이에요.

That is why it's art.

그래서 예술인 것이고요.

Otherwise, it's just a game,

그렇지 않으면, 게임에 불과하겠죠.

and games can be art, but in a very different way.

게임도 예술이 될 수 있지만, 그 방식은 아주 다를거에요.

CS: Gamers who actually sell the right to sit there

신디: 판권을 팔고, 비평을 하는

and comment on what's happening,

게임 제작자들에겐

to me that's more community than storytelling.

스토리텔링 보단 공동체라는 것이 제 생각엔 더 맞는 것 같은데요.

SR: And that is its own form of campfire.

숀다: 그들 나름의 야영장 모닥불이라고 할 수 있겠죠.

I don't discount that as a form of storytelling,

그게 스토리텔링이라고 생각하진 않고

but it is a group form, I suppose.

아마도, 어떤 모임의 형식이겠죠.

CS: All right, what about the super-super --

신디: 좋아요, 그럼 이건 어떻게 생각하세요.

the fact that everything's getting shorter, shorter, shorter.

모든 방송들이 점점 더 짧아지는 추세 말이죠.

And, you know, Snapchat now has something it calls shows

알다시피, '스냅챗'에도

that are one minute long.

1분짜리 방송이 있잖아요.

SR: It's interesting.

숀다: 흥미로와요.

Part of me thinks it sounds like commercials.

한편으로 광고처럼 들려요.

I mean, it does -- like, sponsored by.

그러니까, '어디 협찬입니다' 하는 것 처럼 말이죠.

But part of me also gets it completely.

한편으론 완전히 이해가 되요.

There's something really wonderful about it.

뭔가 아주 놀라운 게 있으니까요.

If you think about a world

대부분의 사람들이 휴대전화로

in which most people are watching television on their phones,

TV를 보는 세상을 생각한다면,

if you think about a place like India,

인도 같은 곳을 생각해 보면,

where most of the input is coming in

대부분의 시청자 의견과,

and that's where most of the product is coming in,

제품의 광고들이 휴대전화를 통해 소개되니까,

shorter makes sense.

짧은 방송들이 더 적합하겠죠.

If you can charge people more for shorter periods of content,

because I am wondering how are they going to consume entertainment,

How do you think we will correct for that and make people well-rounded citizens?

SR: Well, me and how I correct for it

is completely different than how somebody else might do it.

다른 사람들과는 완전히 다를텐데요.

SR: I really don't know how we're going to do it in the future.

숀다: 앞으론 어떤 식이 될지 정말 잘 모르겠어요.

I mean, my poor children have been the subject of all of my experiments.

We're still doing what I call "Amish summers"

아직도 저흰 "아미쉬 여름"이라고 부르는 걸 하고 있어요.

where I turn off all electronics

모든 전자제품들을 끄고,

and watch them scream for a while until they settle down

But honestly, it's a very hard world

in which now, as grown-ups,

we're so interested in watching our own thing,

and we don't even know that we're being fed, sometimes,

원하는 것들만 제공받는다는 사실을

just our own opinions.

You know, the way it's working now,

you're watching a feed,

and the feeds are being corrected

각자 기호에 맞게 걸러냅니다.

so that you're only getting your own opinions

그렇게, 듣고 싶은 얘기들만 골라 듣게 되고

and you're feeling more and more right about yourself.

So how do you really start to discern?

It's getting a little bit disturbing.

So maybe it'll overcorrect, maybe it'll all explode,

I hate to be negative about it,

SR: I think a lot about the fact that television has the power

and when you're watching television --

for instance, they do studies about medical shows.

I think it's 87 percent, 87 percent of people

get most of their knowledge about medicine and medical facts

from medical shows,

much more so than they do from their doctors,

than from articles.

습득하는 것이 아니고요.

So we work really hard to be accurate, and every time we make a mistake,

I feel really guilty, like we're going to do something bad,

실수라도 하면, 나쁜 짓을 했다는 죄책감을 느끼지만,

but we also give a lot of good medical information.

There are so many other ways to give information on those shows.

People are being entertained

and maybe they don't want to read the news,

but there are a lot of ways to give fair information out on those shows,

not in some creepy, like, we're going to control people's minds way,

사람들의 마음이라도 조종하려는 기이한 것이 아니라,

but in a way that's sort of very interesting and intelligent

and not about pushing one side's version or the other,

like, giving out the truth.

It would be strange, though,

but I gather a lot of what you've written as fiction

숀다씨가 쓴 소설들의 많은 부분들이

has become prediction this season?

SR: You know, "Scandal" has been very disturbing for that reason.

숀다: 알다시피, 그것 때문에 "스캔들"이 좀 충격적이었죠.

We have this show that's about politics gone mad,

미쳐가는 정치판을 소재로 한 드라마인데,

and basically the way we've always told the show --

제작진들에게 기본적으로 얘기했던 건

you know, everybody pays attention to the papers.

그러니까, 모두들 신경써서 신문을 읽어 달라는 것이었어요.

We read everything. We talk about everything.

모든 기사들을 읽어요. 모든 것에 대해 얘기해 보죠.

We have lots of friends in Washington.

워싱턴 정가에 아는 사람들이 아주 많지만,

And we'd always sort of done our show as a speculation.

극본을 쓸 땐 항상 상상에 의존했어요.

We'd sit in the room and think,

회의실에 앉아서 생각하죠.

what would happen if the wheels came off the bus

갑자기 일이 잘 못 되서,

and everything went crazy?

모든게 엉망이 되면 어쩌지?

And that was always great,

그리고, 지금까진 아주 좋았지만,

except now it felt like the wheels were coming off the bus

이젠 달리는 버스에서 바퀴가 빠져나가는 것 같고,

and things were actually going crazy,

모든게 엉망이 되어가는 상황이요.

so the things that we were speculating were really coming true.

그러니까, 저희가 상상한 것들에 현실감이 떨어지는 것이겠죠.

I mean, our season this year

그러니까, 올 시즌은

was going to end with the Russians controlling the American election,

러시아가 미국 선거를 조작하는 내용을 끝으로,

and we'd written it, we'd planned for it,

이미 써 놓고, 준비를 했어요.

it was all there,

정말 거기 다 있었어요.

and then the Russians were suspected of being involved in the American election

그리고는 실제로 러시아가 미국 선거에 개입했다는 의혹이 제기됐고,

and we suddenly had to change what we were going to do for our season.

이번 시즌의 내용을 갑자기 바꿔야 했죠.

I walked in and I was like,

제가 들어와서 이렇게 말했어요.

"That scene where our mystery woman starts speaking Russian?

"정체모를 여자가 나타나 러시아어로 얘기하는 장면은

We have to fix that and figure out what we're going to do."

수정해야 하는데, 어떻게 할지 생각해 봅시다."

That just comes from extrapolating

단순히 저희들도

out from what we thought was going to happen,

말도 안된다고 생각한 추론으로부터 나온

or what we thought was crazy.

이야기였는데 말이죠.

CS: That's great.

신디: 대단하네요.

So where else in US or elsewhere in the world do you look?

미국 외 다른 지역에도 관심을 두고 계신가요?

Who is doing interesting storytelling right now?

흥미롭게 스토리텔링을 하는 사람은 누가 있을까요?

SR: I don't know, there's a lot of interesting stuff out there.

숀다: 잘은 모르지만, 흥미로운 것들이 많아요.

Obviously British television is always amazing

확실히 영국 TV에는 항상 놀랍고,

and always does interesting things.

흥미로운 것들이 많아요.

I don't get to watch a lot of TV,

전 TV를 많이 볼 순 없는데,

mainly because I'm busy working.

항상 바쁘니까요.

And I pretty much try not to watch very much television at all,

그리고, 될 수 있으면 TV를 아예 안 보려고 해요.

even American television, until I'm done with a season,

시즌이 끝나기 전엔 미국 방송도 보지 않으려고 하는데,

because things start to creep into my head otherwise.

다른 생각들이 떠오를까봐 그래요.

I start to wonder, like,

궁금해지기 시작해요.

why can't our characters wear crowns and talk about being on a throne?

왜 우리 등장인물들은 왕관을 쓰고 왕좌에 오르는 얘기를 할 수 없지?

It gets crazy.

정신없어지죠.

So I try not to watch much until the seasons are over.

그래서 모든 시즌이 끝나기 전엔 TV를 많이 보지 않으려고 해요.

But I do think that there's a lot of interesting European television out there.

하지만 유럽에도 흥미로운 TV 방송들이 많다고 생각해요.

I was at the International Emmys

국제 에미 시상식에 참석했을 때,

and looking around and seeing the stuff that they were showing,

돌아다니면서, 여러 방송물들을 보고

and I was kind of fascinated.

반한 적이 있어요.

There's some stuff I want to watch and check out.

CS: Can you imagine --

신디: 상상할 수 있을까요.

I know that you don't spend a lot of time thinking about tech stuff,

but you know how a few years ago we had someone here at TED

몇 년 전 여기 TED에서 누군가 강연을 한 적이 있는데,

talking about seeing,

보는 것에 관한 것이었어요.

wearing Google Glass and seeing your TV shows essentially in your eye?

구글안경을 쓰고 직접 본인의 드라마를 시청하는 걸 상상해 볼 수 있을까요?

Do you ever fantasize when, you know --

이런 건 어떨까요, 그러니까

the little girl who sat on the pantry floor

부모님 집의 부엌 바닥에 앉아있는

in your parents' house,

어린 소녀가 ...

did you ever imagine any other medium?

생각해 본 다른 매체들이 있나요?

Or would you now?

SR: Any other medium.

숀다: 다른 매체 말이죠.

For storytelling, other than books?

책 말고, 스토리텔링을 할 수 있는 것이요?

I mean, I grew up wanting to be Toni Morrison, so no.

전 자라면서 '토니 모리슨'처럼 되고 싶었으니까, 없다고 할래요.

I mean, I didn't even imagine television.

사실, TV도 생각해 보지 않았죠.

So the idea that there could be some bigger world,

더 큰 세상이 있고,

some more magical way of making things ---

창작에 쓰이는 마술 같은 방법에 대한 생각들로,

I'm always excited when new technology comes out

저는 새로운 기술에 항상 흥분하고,

and I'm always the first one to want to try it.

늘 먼저 시도해 보려고 해요.

The possibilities feel endless and exciting right now,

끝없이 흥미진진한 가능성들로

which is what excites me.

마음이 설레죠.

We're in this sort of Wild West period, to me, it feels like,

지금은 거친 서부시대 같기도 해요.

because nobody knows what we're going to settle on.

You can put stories anywhere right now

and that's cool to me,

and it feels like once we figure out how to get the technology

and the creativity of storytelling to meet,

the possibilities are endless.

CS: And also the technology has enabled the thing I briefly flew by earlier,

신디: 제가 좀전에 잠깐 언급했던

binge-viewing, which is a recent phenomenon,

최근의 현상인 몰아보기도 이런 기술 덕분이겠죠.

since you've been doing shows, right?

숀다씨가 제작을 할 쯤 시작되고 있었죠, 맞죠?

And how do you think does that change the storytelling process at all?

그런 현상이 스토리텔링의 과정에 어떤 변화를 가져 올까요?

You always had a bible for the whole season beforehand, right?

항상 사전에 전체 시즌에 대한 기획을 하시잖아요?

SR: No, I just always knew where we were going to end.

숀다: 그건 아니고, 언제 끝을 낼지는 항상 알고 있었죠.

So for me,

그래서 제가,

the only way I can really comment on that

답변할 수 있는 유일한 방법은,

is that I have a show that's been going on for 14 seasons

14시즌 동안 계속된 드라마를 만들었고,

and so there are the people who have been watching it for 14 seasons,

14시즌 동안 함께한 시청자들이 있고.

and then there are the 12-year-old girls I'd encounter in the grocery store

3주 만에 297회를 몰아서 시청한 12살짜리 소녀를

who had watched 297 episodes in three weeks.

시장에서 우연히 만나기도 한다는 것이죠.

Seriously, and that's a very different experience for them,

사실이에요. 그들에겐 아주 특이한 경험이죠.

because they've been inside of something

왜냐면 그들은 뭔가에 푹 빠져있고,

really intensely for a very short period of time

아주 짧은 시간 동안

in a very intense way,

아주 열정적이죠.

and to them the story has a completely different arc

이야기의 굴곡이 그들에겐 전혀 다르게 다가오고,

and a completely different meaning

전혀 다른 의미를 던져 주기도 해요.

because it never had any breaks.

끊지않고 계속 이어보기 때문이죠.

CS: It's like visiting a country and then leaving it. It's a strange --

신디: 다른 나라로 여행을 다녀 온 것 같겠죠. 신기한

SR: It's like reading an amazing novel and then putting it down.

숀다: 굉장한 소설을 읽고 내려놓는 것 같겠죠.

I think that is the beauty of the experience.

전 그게 경험의 미학이라고 생각해요.

You don't necessarily have to watch something for 14 seasons.

어떤 방송도 14시즌 동안이나 볼 필요는 없어요.

It's not necessarily the way everything's supposed to be.

모든 게 그럴 순 없겠죠.

CS: Is there any topic that you don't think we should touch?

신디: 다뤄서는 안될 주제도 있을까요?

SR: I don't think I think of story that way.

숀다: 전 이야기를 그런 식으로 생각하진 않아요.

I think of story in terms of character and what characters would do

제가 생각하는 건 등장인물들과 그들이 뭘 하고,

and what characters need to do in order to make them move forward,

그들이 뭘 해야 이야기가 잘 흘러갈지 생각하죠.

so I'm never really thinking of story in terms of just plot,

그래서 단순히 구상이 이야기의 전부라고 절대 생각치 않아요.

and when writers come into my writer's room and pitch me plot,

작가들이 제 방에 와서 새로운 구상에 대한 의견을 낼 때면,

I say, "You're not speaking English."

전 말하죠, "다른 나라 말처럼 들려요."

Like, that's the thing I say.

제가 항상 하는 말 처럼요.

We're not speaking English. I need to hear what's real.

서로 말이 안 통하는 거에요. 저는 정확한 의미를 알아야 하는데 말이죠.

And so I don't think of it that way.

그래서 전 그렇게 생각하지 않아요.

I don't know if there's a way to think there's something I wouldn't do

제가 쓰지 않을 거라고 생각하는 방식이 있는지 모르겠어요.

because that feels like I'm plucking pieces of plot off a wall or something.

왜냐면 이야기의 구성 요소들을 벽 같은데서 뜯어 내는 것 같잖아요.

CS: That's great. To what extent do you think you will use --

You know, you recently went on the board of Planned Parenthood

and got involved in the Hillary Clinton campaign.

To what extent do you think you will use your storytelling

본인의 스토리텔링을 얼마나 이용할 생각이세요?

in the real world

현실 세계에

to effect change?

변화를 가져오는데 말이죠.

SR: Well, you know, there's --

숀다: 글쎄요.

That's an intense subject to me,

저한텐 아주 진지한 주제인데요,

because I feel like the lack of narrative

많은 사람들이 그들의 이야기를 제대로 전달하지 못하는 건

that a lot of people have is difficult.

심각한 문제라고 생각하니까요.

You know, like, there's a lot of organizations

알다시피, 많은 단체들이

that don't have a positive narrative that they've created for themselves

그들만의 긍정적인 내러티브를 가지고 있지 않아요.

that would help them.

결국 스스로에게 도움이 될 텐데 말이죠.

There's a lot of campaigns

보다 나은 내러티브는

that could be helped with a better narrative.

선거운동에 도움이 됩니다.

The Democrats could do a lot

민주당도 효과적으로

with a very strong narrative for themselves.

그들의 내러티브를 이용해 많은 것들을 할 수 있었어요.

There's a lot of different things that could happen

스토리텔링이 가진 힘을 이용해

in terms of using storytelling voice,

다양한 일들을 할 수 있어요.

and I don't mean that in a fiction way,

허구의 형식이 아닌,

I mean that in a same way that any speechwriter would mean it.

연설문 작성가들이 쓰는 방식들 말이죠.

And I see that,

전 그렇게 보지만,

but I don't necessarily know that that's, like, my job to do that.

그렇다고 그게 제가 할 일이라고 생각하진 않아요.
