Story has always helped me understand the human experience.

이야기는 늘 인간의 경험을 이해하는 데에 도움이 됩니다.

Growing up,

자라면서

I took solace in the books that I would read,

저는 책들 속에서 안식을 찾았고,

and those book characters that I met offered me friendship.

그 책 속 등장인물들은 제게 친구가 되어주었습니다.

Characters like Ralph S. Mouse

비버리 클리어리의 책 ‘랄프와 오토바이’에 나오는

from Beverly Cleary's "The Mouse and the Motorcycle."

주인공 생쥐 랄프나

Snoopy, Garfield.

스누피, 가필드 같은 캐릭터들 말이죠.

They offered me companionship as I dealt with the trauma

제가 트라우마를 겪을 때 그들은 제 곁을 지켜주었습니다.

of my mother's lifelong struggle with an opioid addiction,

저희 어머니는 평생을 약물 중독으로 고생했고

the fact that I didn’t know who or where my birth father was.

제 진짜 아버지가 누군지 모른다는 사실에 힘들었거든요.

Story has also helped me understand my family's history.

이야기는 제 가족의 역사를 이해하는 데에도 도움이 되었습니다.

My grandfather, who raised me,

저를 키워주신 할아버지께서는

would hold court in the living room,

거실에 저를 앉혀 놓고

regaling me with stories of life during the Great Depression.

대공황 시대의 삶에 대해 이야기하곤 했습니다.

And telling me all about his parents

그의 부모님에 대해서도 얘기해주셨습니다.

who had emigrated from Poland.

폴란드 이주민들이셨죠.

Now, my great grandparents died many years before I was ever born.

제 증조부모님은 제가 태어나기 몇 년 전에 돌아가셨습니다.

But through these stories that were shared

하지만 제가 집에서 들었던

in our home

이런 이야기들 덕분에

I always felt like I knew them.

그분들을 늘 알았던 것 같았죠.

Now creating my own stories,

저만의 이야기를 만드는 것은

that offered me an escape portal.

현실로부터 탈출구가 되어주었습니다.

You see, it was a home that was filled with so much dysfunction.

저희 집은 온통 제대로 된 것이 없었습니다.

My grandparents drank a lot.

조부모님은 술을 많이 드셨죠.

There was a lot of yelling,

언성을 높이는 일이 잦았고

a lot of chaos,

온통 엉망이었어요.

and I controlled none of it.

제가 할 수 있는 게 없었습니다.

From the pages of my comics,

하지만 만화를 그릴 때만큼은

I was the one calling the shots.

제 맘대로 할 수 있었죠.

Creating my own worlds, creating my own characters.

저만의 세계, 저만의 캐릭터들을 만들어

Sharing them with my friends and family members.

친구들, 가족과 이것들을 공유했습니다.

I thrived off that creativity.

저의 창의력을 마음껏 펼쳤죠.

Now my mother was an incredibly talented artist.

저의 어머니는 아주 뛰어난 예술가셨습니다.

And even though she spent a majority of my childhood incarcerated,

비록 제 어린 시절 대부분을 감옥에서 보내셨지만

she spent her time drawing cartoons

그 안에서 만화를 그리고

and mailing them to me.

저에게 편지로 부쳐주셨습니다.

And these cartoons that arrived from prison from my mom,

어머니께서 감옥에서 보낸 이 만화들은

it was her way of, you know,

그녀만의 표현 방식이었습니다.

it was her way of letting me know that she loved me

저를 사랑한다고,

and letting me know just what I was capable of.

제가 굉장한 일을 할 수 있다고 표현하는 방식이었어요.

Now bearing witness to the stories of others

다른 사람들의 이야기를 지켜보는 것은

helped me put life into perspective.

저의 삶을 정리하는 데에 도움이 되었습니다.

When I was a teenager,

저는 청소년 때

I volunteered at a camp for children with cancer.

암에 걸린 아이들을 위한 캠프에서 봉사활동을 한 적이 있습니다.

And I spent several summers after that working there as well.

봉사활동이 끝난 뒤에도 몇 년은 여름마다 그곳에 갔죠.

And of all the kids I met over the years,

여러 해 동안 그곳에서 만난 많은 아이들 중

the kid that sticks out the most in my memory is Eric.

가장 기억에 남는 아이는 에릭입니다.

Eric was the very first kid that I was charged to care for.

에릭은 제가 처음으로 돌보게 된 친구였습니다.

I was 16 years old.

그때 전 16살이었고

He was four

에릭은 4살이었습니다.

and had recently been diagnosed with leukemia.

최근에 백혈병 진단을 받은 아이였죠.

Now ...

자...

Despite his thinning hair,

빠져가는 머리카락에도 불구하고,

despite the shunt in his chest,

가슴 속에 있는 기계에도 불구하고,

this boy wielded a Power Rangers sword

이 아이는 파워레인저 칼을 든 채

and went after life with so much energy

넘쳐나는 에너지로 삶을 이어갔습니다.

and an ear-to-ear grin.

귀에 걸린 미소와 함께 말이죠.

Now, in my years of working with kids with critical illnesses at camp,

캠프에서 불치병을 앓는 아이들을 돌볼 때

I was often lauded, but that just always felt

자주 칭찬을 들었지만, 그때마다 늘...

unnecessary and backwards,

쓸모없고 이상하게 느껴졌습니다.

because it just felt like such a selfish endeavor.

저 자신을 위한 노력이었다는 느낌이 들었죠.

I was given a front-row seat

저는 가장 좋은 자리에서

to some of the most remarkable stories in human history.

인류 역사상 가장 놀라운 이야기들을 지켜볼 수 있었으니까요.

Eric died

에릭이 세상을 떠난 건

shortly before his sixth birthday.

여섯 살 생일을 앞둔 때였습니다.

Twenty-five years ago.

25년 전 일이죠.

You know, there isn't a day that I don't think about him,

전 아직도 매일 그 아이에 대해 생각합니다.

그 아이가 제게 어떤 의미였는지 매일 생각하죠.

there isn't a day that I don't think what he meant to me

그 짧은 생을 어떻게 살았는지도요.

or what he was able to do with his short life.

저는 아직도 에릭의 가족과 연락을 합니다.

And I do remain in touch with his family.

제가 그 아이의 무덤에 갈 때면

When I visit his grave site,

I don't bring flowers.

꽃을 가져가지 않습니다.

I bring a Power Rangers action figure.

파워레인저 장난감을 가져가죠.

I've recently completed a graphic memoir recounting my time working at camp.

저는 최근에 만화 형식의 회고록을 집필했습니다.

그 캠프에서 일했을 때를 내용에 담았죠.

And working with this population.

아이들과 함께했던 시간,

And that time with Eric.

에릭과 함께했던 시간도요.

Now, creating a graphic memoir is a daunting experience.

그래픽 회고록을 쓰는 것은 어려운 경험이었습니다.

There is, of course, the physical labor of a book

책을 만드는 데도 물론 육체 노동이 필요하죠.

that is hundreds of pages long.

한 권에 수백 쪽이나 되고

That has multiple panels of art on every single page.

매 쪽마다 여러 개의 그림들을 넣어야 하니까요.

But it's the emotional toll that is the most difficult to deal with.

하지만 감정적인 무게가 가장 감당하기 어려웠습니다.

I'm face-to-face with these loved ones that I've missed.

그리워하는, 사랑하는 사람들과 다시 얼굴을 마주해야 하고,

I'm in that room again and often for the first time

다시 함께했던 방 안에 있어야 했고,

당시엔 느끼지 못했던 것들을 느껴야 했습니다.

dealing with stuff I had never dealt with at the time.

Now I went into this process knowing full well

이 프로젝트를 시작할 때

how intense this experience would be.

이 과정이 얼마나 무거운 경험일지 잘 알고 있었습니다.

I'd previously created a graphic memoir

전에 이미 그래픽 회고록을 낸 적이 있거든요.

called "Hey, Kiddo,"

‘헤이, 나 좀 봐’라는 제목으로

about my own childhood and my mother's addictions.

저의 어린 시절과 어머니의 중독에 대한 내용이었죠.

So I know what you're all thinking.

여러분이 뭘 생각하고 있는지 알아요.

Books for kids about a parent with heroin addiction,

아이들을 위한 책 내용이

마약에 중독된 부모와

pediatric cancer.

소아암 환자라니요.

And yes, I'm just chasing all of the hot trends in children's literature.

그래요, 저는 아동 문학의 최신 트렌드를 쫓고 있는 겁니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But when I was working on "Hey, Kiddo,"

‘헤이, 나 좀 봐’를 작업하고 있을 때,

even though the most important people in my life had since passed --

제 삶에 가장 중요한 사람들,

my grandfather, my mother --

할아버지와 어머니는 이미 돌아가셨는데도

production on that book

그 책을 쓰는 것은

brought me closer to them.

저를 그들 가까이 데려가 주었습니다.

And the same now has happened

그리고 같은 일이 다시 벌어졌습니다.

with Eric

‘썬샤인(Sunshine)’을 쓰며 에릭과 함께 말이죠.

We all have loss in our lives, and we all have pain in our life,

우리는 모두 누군가를 잃어보았고, 삶 속에서 아픔을 느껴보았습니다.

and that can be so incredibly difficult.

이 경험들은 정말 힘들 수 있죠.

And I know all too well that ...

저도 잘 알아요...

No matter how much I talk about these people,

아무리 이 사람들에 대해 이야기하고,

no matter how much I write about them,

아무리 그들에 대한 글을 쓰고,

no matter how much I draw them,

아무리 그들을 그려도,

there is nothing that I'm going to do

그들을 다시 이 지구로 불러올 수 없다는 것을요.

that's going to bring them back to this Earth.

I miss them.

그들이 그립습니다.

But I take solace in knowing that their stories are being shared

하지만 그들 이야기를 알리고 기억한다는 것에서 위안을 찾습니다.

and that they are being remembered,

제 할아버지의 말씀이 옳았기 때문이죠.

because my grandfather was right.

Stories keep people alive and real to us.

이야기는 사람들을 우리 곁에 살아있도록, 우리와 함께 남아있도록 해줍니다.
