And this is a TED Talk about blindness,

which is confusing for me and for you

because just by watching me right now, you can probably tell I'm not blind.

For example, I can tell that on this plate right here,

So you might be wondering, if I can see all that,

why am I talking about blindness?

OK, so I'm going blind.

자, 저는 실명하게 될 겁니다.

I don't know exactly when.

정확히 언제일지는 몰라요.

As a teenager, I was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, or RP,

10대 때 저는 색소성 망막염, 즉 RP를 진단 받았습니다.

which is a degenerative retinal condition.

퇴행성 망막 질환이죠.

In my teens and early 20s,

10대와 20대 초반에는 밤에만 불편함이 있었어요.

I only noticed it at night.

Then in my early 30s, my peripheral vision started to deteriorate.

그러다 30대 초반에 주변 시야가 흐려지기 시작했습니다.

Right now I have central vision,

지금은 중심 시야를 가지고 있지만

but I'm seeing the world through a pretty narrow porthole.

꽤 좁은 둥근 창을 통해 세상을 보고 있습니다.

So even though I can see these pears and that hippo, I'm legally blind.

그래서 이 배와 하마를 볼 수 있지만 법적으로는 시각 장애인입니다.

I have severe tunnel vision,

저는 심한 터널 시야지만 터널처럼 보이지 않습니다.

but it doesn't look like a tunnel

because your brain adapts really quickly to whatever you see.

보이는 모든 것에 뇌가 빠르게 적응하기 때문이에요.

Like if the frame of the movie you're watching

보고 있는 영화의 화면이 아주 작아지기 시작하면

starts to shrink to a much smaller size, at first you'll be annoyed.

처음에는 짜증이 나는 것과 비슷해요.

"This sucks," you might say to yourself,

짜증 내며 혼잣말을 하겠죠.

"I don't like watching this movie on this tiny screen."

“이렇게 작은 화면으로는 영화 보기 짜증나!” 라고요.

Then your complaints will soften and disappear,

하지만 불만은 점점 누그러져 사라지고

and your brain will adapt to the new normal.

뇌는 새로운 표준에 적응할 것입니다.

Like the first time you watch a movie on your cell phone,

휴대폰으로 영화를 처음 볼 때처럼

it will be annoyingly small at first, and then you just get used to it.

처음에는 짜증날 정도로 작아도 금방 익숙해질 것입니다.

So every time I lose another chunk of vision,

그래서 저는 시야가 조금씩 좁아질 때마다

at first I feel super extra blind,

처음엔 실명에 더욱 가까워졌다는 느낌에

sometimes scared or claustrophobic.

두렵거나 밀실 공포증이 생기기도 합니다.

My world is shrinking.

제 세상이 좁아지고 있는 것이니까요.

But then a week will go by, I get used to it,

하지만 일주일이 지나면 익숙해져

I don't feel so blind anymore.

더이상 실명이 와닿지 않게 됩니다.

This experience of super gradual vision loss has given me time

굉장히 점진적인 시력 상실의 경험은

제게 실명이란 무엇인지 생각해 볼 시간을 주었습니다.

to think about what blindness is,

which might seem like an obvious question.

답이 뻔한 질문일 수도 있겠죠.

Blindness is the absence of sight,

실명은 시력의 부재를 의미하지만

but it's actually more complicated than that.

실제로는 그보다 더 복잡합니다.

Trying to define blindness can start to feel paradoxical.

실명을 정의하려고 하면 역설적으로 느껴질 수 있어요.

There's a paradox that's useful in thinking about blindness.

실명을 잘 설명해주는 역설이 하나 있습니다.

It's called the paradox of the heap.

더미의 역설이라고 불려요.

Let's say you have a heap of something, like sand or marbles or goji berries.

모래나 구슬, 구기자 같은 게 쌓인 더미가 있다고 가정해봅시다.

Now imagine I take a single little goji berry off of the heap.

이제 제가 그 더미에서 작은 구기자 하나를 가져간다고 상상해 보세요.

Is it still a heap?

아직도 더미인가요?

OK, what if I remove a second tiny little goji berry from the heap?

이제 더미에서 두 번째 구기자 열매를 가져가면 어떻게 되나요?

Obviously that is still a heap also.

당연하게도 아직 더미입니다.

But, the ancient Greek philosopher wondered,

하지만 고대 그리스 철학자는

at what point is it no longer a heap?

어느 시점에서 더 이상 더미가 아닌지 궁금해했습니다.

How many goji berries do I have to remove?

구기자 열매를 몇 개나 가져가야 할까요?

Is it still a heap when there's only ten left?

Vision works this way too.

시력도 비슷합니다.

How much vision do I need to lose

before I can legitimately call myself blind?

스스로를 정당하게 시각 장애인이라 부를 수 있을까요?

I saw this photo online the other day.

얼마 전 인터넷에서 이 사진을 봤습니다.

(AD) In the photo, a Black woman holds a white cane

and looks at a cell phone.

AL: 이 사진에는 이런 설명이 붙어 있었어요.

"If you can see what's wrong, say 'I see it.'"

Can you see what's wrong with this photo?

이 사진의 문제가 무엇인지 보이시나요?

The answer that the people sharing the photo had

사진을 공유한 사람들의 대답은

is that the woman can't be blind.

그 여성이 시각 장애인일 수 없다는 거였어요.

If she is, why is she looking at her phone?

만약 시각 장애인이라면 왜 핸드폰을 보고 있을까요?

Blind people don't look at things.

시각 장애인이라면 뭔가를 보고 있지 않겠죠.

The caption wants you to remember: blind people don’t see.

시각 장애인은 보지 못한다는 걸 그 설명 문구가 상기시켜주고 있습니다.

And if she can see,

만약 그녀가 볼 수 있다면,

what's she doing with that long white cane

길고 흰 지팡이를 가지고 뭘 하고 있는 걸까요?

that signals to the world that she's blind?

자신이 시각 장애인임을 알리는 표시잖아요?

Maybe she's trying to get sympathy that she doesn't deserve

어쩌면 받을 수 없는 동정심을 얻으려 하거나

or trying to trick us somehow.

우리를 속이려고 하는 걸 수도 있습니다.

So how blind you have to be to be blind?

그렇다면 눈이 얼마나 안 보여야 시각 장애인이 되는 걸까요?

How much vision do you have to remove from the heap of sight

시력 더미에서 얼마나 많은 시력을 덜어내야

before it becomes blindness?

실명했다고 할 수 있을까요?

People love binaries, especially people on the internet,

사람들은 양분법을 좋아합니다. 인터넷상에선 특히 그렇고요.

which is a place that's not always very friendly to ambiguity.

모호성에 그다지 우호적이지 않죠.

This photo was shared more than 33,000 times,

이 사진은 33,000번 이상 공유되었는데,

and I think it went viral exactly because of its ambiguity.

바로 그 모호함 때문에 인기를 얻은 것 같아요.

It illuminates a weird, paradoxical truth about blindness.

실명의 기이하고 역설적인 진실을 조명하고 있습니다.

Blind people can see.

시각 장애인도 볼 수 있습니다.

I don't mean this in the way that people mean it

그렇다고 다니엘 키쉬의 경우를 말하려는 건 아니에요.

when they talk about Daniel Kish.

Kish makes clicking sounds with his mouth

키쉬는 입으로 딸깍거리는 소리를 내서

that he uses to navigate his environment the way a bat uses sonar.

박쥐가 음파 탐지를 하듯이 주변 환경을 탐색합니다.

Brain scans show that when Kish navigates his environment this way,

DIY 음파 탐지기로 주변을 탐색하면 뇌 스캐너가 그것을 시각화하죠.

using his DIY sonar, his visual cortex lights up.

뇌의 시각 피질이 빛을 감지합니다.

That's amazing.

정말 놀라운 일이에요.

But the point I'm making is much simpler.

하지만 제 요점은 훨씬 간단합니다.

On the one hand, blindness is a binary.

한편으로 실명은 양분법적입니다.

You're either blind or you're not.

실명이거나 아니거나 둘 중 하나이죠.

But on the other hand, blindness is a spectrum.

하지만 다른 한편으론 실명은 광범위합니다.

There are different degrees of blindness and different styles.

실명의 정도와 방식이 다르죠.

Some people have the inverse of what I've got.

어떤 이들은 저와 반대입니다.

They only see through their peripheral vision with nothing in the center.

중심부는 없고 주변 시야를 통해서만 볼 수 있습니다.

Other blind people see the world

또 어떤 시각 장애인들의 경우엔

마치 바세린이 묻은 안경을 쓰고 있는 거 같거나,

as though their glasses have been smeared with Vaseline

or their head's been wrapped several times in saran wrap

머리에 비닐 랩을 몇 겹 감은 것 같거나,

또는 부서진 두꺼운 어항을 통해 보는 거 같습니다.

or like they're looking through a thick, broken fishbowl.

아주 소수의 시각 장애인만이 아무것도 없는 완전한 어둠을 보죠.

Only very few blind people see nothing at all, total darkness.

As I lose my sight,

제가 시력을 잃으면서

I experienced this degeneration the way you might expect:

예상하셨다시피 이러한 퇴보를 경험했습니다:

as a loss.

바로 상실감이었죠.

In the meantime,

하지만 여전히 볼 수 있는다는 건 특권이라고 생각합니다.

I feel privileged to still be able to see things like sunsets or tree frogs

석양이나 청개구리도 보고

or celebrity breakfasts on Instagram.

인스타 셀럽의 아침식사도 찾아불 수 있으니까요.

There's another paradox lurking around here.

여기엔 또 다른 역설이 도사리고 있습니다.

If blindness is a spectrum,

실명의 범위가 넓다면

could it also include somebody who's not actually blind?

시각 장애인이 아닌 사람도 포함될 수 있을까요?

The paradox works the other way.

역설은 다른 방식으로 작용합니다.

How much sight do you have to add before someone's no longer blind?

더 이상 시각 장애인이 아니라고 하려면 얼마의 시력이 필요할까요?

At a certain point, we do have to agree that someone's not blind,

누군가에게 시각 장애인이 아니라고 해야 할 때도 있을 겁니다.

even if they don't see very well.

뚜렷하게 보지는 못하더라도요.

I do think it's important to reserve blindness for people

저는 실명의 기준을 정하는 것이 중요하다고 생각합니다.

who don't have the luxury of correcting their vision,

시력을 교정할 여유가 없는 사람이나

who need assistive technology to do things like read print or walk around.

인쇄물을 읽거나 돌아다닐 때 보조장치가 필요한 사람들을 위해서요.

반면에 이러한 실명의 구분은

On the other hand, separating out blindness like this

can lead people to view the blind as strange or mysterious or off-putting.

시각 장애인을 이상하거나 기괴하게, 또는 불쾌하게 여기게 만들 수 있죠.

And that can lead to fear and sometimes damaging misconceptions and stereotypes,

이는 두려움이나, 때로는 극심한 오해와 고정관념으로 이어질 수 있습니다.

like the idea that blind people are psychic,

실제로 일부 사람들은 시각장애인을 초능력자로 생각하거나

which some people actually believe,

or that they have super hearing.

청력이 엄청나다고 믿죠.

The brain rewires itself to boost the remaining senses.

that they can't go to a normal school

평범한 학교에 갈 수도 없고,

or hold a normal job or travel on their own.

평범한 직장을 다니거나 혼자 여행할 수 없습니다.

So the next time you see a blind person do something

만약 정상 시력일 때만 할 수 있는 일을 시각 장애인이 하는 걸 보게 된다면,

that you think only a sighted person should do,

like making eye contact with you or watching a movie,

예를 들어 시선이 마주치거나, 영화를 보고 있거나,

or standing at a bus stop checking their phone,

버스 정류장에서 폰을 보고 있으면

remember, it might be possible to see even if you're blind.
