Describing Cost / Price in English

And in this video, we're going to talk about  how to describe the cost or price of something. 

Neste vídeo, falaremos sobre como descrever o custo ou o preço de algo.

Now, this is important to people  like me who like shopping, right. 

Agora, isso é importante para pessoas como eu, que gostam de fazer compras, certo?

So, for example, I like  shopping especially for dresses/ 

Então, por exemplo, eu gosto de comprar especialmente vestidos/

So I might say the cost of  this dress is affordable. 

Então, posso dizer que o custo desse vestido é acessível.

Okay. This dress is affordable. 

OK. Este vestido é acessível.

‘affordable’ means that this  dress is not too expensive. 

'acessível' significa que este vestido não é muito caro.

I have enough money and I can pay for this dress. I have enough money. 

Tenho dinheiro suficiente e posso pagar por este vestido. Eu tenho dinheiro suficiente.

I can buy this dress. So I would say this dress is affordable. 

Eu posso comprar este vestido. Então eu diria que este vestido é acessível.

I can also say this dress is inexpensive. We all know what expensive is but we say  

Também posso dizer que este vestido é barato. Todos nós sabemos o que é caro, mas dizemos

inexpensive so that's the opposite of expensive. ‘affordable’ and ‘inexpensive’  

barato, então é o oposto de caro. 'acessível' e 'barato'

have very similar meanings. Again, I have enough money to buy this. 

têm significados muito semelhantes. Mais uma vez, tenho dinheiro suficiente para comprar isso.

It's not too expensive. Then, we have ‘cheap’. 

Não é muito caro. Então, temos 'barato'.

This dress is cheap. Now, ‘cheap’ is similar, it means it's not  

Este vestido é barato. Agora, 'barato' é semelhante, significa que não é

expensive, but it's a little bit more negative. If you say that something is cheap, people may  

caro, mas é um pouco mais negativo. Se você disser que algo é barato, as pessoas podem

think that the quality is not very good. It's not very nice. 

pensar que a qualidade não é muito boa. Não é muito legal.

Okay. Now, let's look at the opposite. 

OK. Agora, vamos ver o oposto.

The opposite of these words is ‘expensive’. This dress is expensive.

O oposto dessas palavras é "caro". Este vestido é caro.

It costs a lot of money, and too much money maybe. I don't want to buy it. 

Custa muito dinheiro, e muito dinheiro talvez. Eu não quero comprá-lo.

We can also say ‘overpriced’. This dress is overpriced. 

Também podemos dizer 'muito caro'. Este vestido é superfaturado.

That means the price is too high. So, again, I don't want to buy this dress,  

Isso significa que o preço é muito alto. Então, novamente, não quero comprar este vestido,

it's too expensive and overpriced. Okay. 

é muito caro e superfaturado. OK.

Let's look at some more examples together. Let's look at some examples.

The hat was affordable because it was on sale. The hat was affordable because it was on sale.

Next. I wish this bag was more affordable.

This computer is surprisingly inexpensive. This computer is surprisingly inexpensive.

look beautiful, but they are too cheap. These shoes look beautiful, but they are

That jacket is too expensive. That jacket is too expensive.

Last. I cannot buy this overpriced bag. 

Durar. Não posso comprar esta bolsa superfaturada.

I cannot buy this overpriced bag. Okay, so in this video, we learned that

when we want to describe the cost of something,  as not too expensive, we say ‘affordable’. 

quando queremos descrever o custo de algo, como não muito caro, dizemos "acessível".

Okay. Something is affordable if it's not too expensive. 

OK. Algo é acessível se não for muito caro.

If I can buy it with the money I have. On the other hand, if something is not affordable, 

Se eu puder comprar com o dinheiro que tenho. Por outro lado, se algo não for acessível,

if the cost is very high, we  say ‘expensive’ or ‘overpriced’. 

se o custo for muito alto, dizemos ‘caro’ ou ‘superfaturado’.

For me, I think some brands like  H&M and Forever 21 are affordable. 

Para mim, acho que algumas marcas como H&M e Forever 21 são acessíveis.

Some people don't think this way. They think it's cheap. 

Algumas pessoas não pensam assim. Eles acham que é barato.

Sometimes, yes, some of the items can be cheap. But for me, I like those brands  

Às vezes, sim, alguns dos itens podem ser baratos. Mas, para mim, gosto dessas marcas

because they are affordable. Another store that I like in Korea,  

porque são acessíveis. Outra loja que eu gosto na Coréia,

it's called Zara or Jara in Korea as they say. They have some items that are affordable and  

chama-se Zara ou Jara na Coréia, como dizem. Eles têm alguns itens acessíveis e

some items that are very expensive. Too expensive for me to buy. 

alguns itens muito caros. Muito caro para eu comprar.
