Describing Cost / Price in English

And in this video, we're going to talk about  how to describe the cost or price of something. 

E in questo video parleremo di come descrivere il costo o il prezzo di qualcosa.

Now, this is important to people  like me who like shopping, right. 

Ora, questo è importante per le persone come me a cui piace fare shopping, giusto.

So, for example, I like  shopping especially for dresses/ 

Quindi, ad esempio, mi piace fare shopping soprattutto per i vestiti/

So I might say the cost of  this dress is affordable. 

Quindi potrei dire che il costo di questo vestito è abbordabile.

Okay. This dress is affordable. 

Va bene. Questo vestito è conveniente.

‘affordable’ means that this  dress is not too expensive. 

"conveniente" significa che questo vestito non è troppo costoso.

I have enough money and I can pay for this dress. I have enough money. 

Ho abbastanza soldi e posso pagare questo vestito. Ho abbastanza soldi.

I can buy this dress. So I would say this dress is affordable. 

Posso comprare questo vestito. Quindi direi che questo vestito è conveniente.

I can also say this dress is inexpensive. We all know what expensive is but we say  

Posso anche dire che questo vestito è poco costoso. Sappiamo tutti cos'è costoso, ma diciamo

inexpensive so that's the opposite of expensive. ‘affordable’ and ‘inexpensive’  

economico, quindi è l'opposto di costoso. "conveniente" e "poco costoso"

have very similar meanings. Again, I have enough money to buy this. 

hanno significati molto simili. Di nuovo, ho abbastanza soldi per comprarlo.

It's not too expensive. Then, we have ‘cheap’. 

Non è troppo costoso. Quindi, abbiamo "economico".

This dress is cheap. Now, ‘cheap’ is similar, it means it's not  

Questo vestito è economico. Ora, "economico" è simile, significa che non   è

expensive, but it's a little bit more negative. If you say that something is cheap, people may  

costoso, ma è un po' più negativo. Se dici che qualcosa è economico, le persone potrebbero

think that the quality is not very good. It's not very nice. 

pensare che la qualità non sia molto buona. Non è molto carino.

Okay. Now, let's look at the opposite. 

Va bene. Ora, diamo un'occhiata al contrario.

The opposite of these words is ‘expensive’. This dress is expensive.

L'opposto di queste parole è "costoso". Questo vestito è costoso.

It costs a lot of money, and too much money maybe. I don't want to buy it. 

Costa un sacco di soldi, e forse troppi soldi. Non voglio comprarlo.

We can also say ‘overpriced’. This dress is overpriced. 

Possiamo anche dire "troppo caro". Questo vestito è troppo caro.

That means the price is too high. So, again, I don't want to buy this dress,  

Ciò significa che il prezzo è troppo alto. Quindi, ancora una volta, non voglio comprare questo vestito,

it's too expensive and overpriced. Okay. 

è troppo costoso e costoso. Va bene.

Let's look at some more examples together. Let's look at some examples.

look beautiful, but they are too cheap. These shoes look beautiful, but they are  

sembrano bellissime, ma sono troppo economiche. Queste scarpe sono bellissime, ma  sono

too cheap. Next.

That jacket is too expensive. That jacket is too expensive. 

Quella giacca è troppo costosa. Quella giacca è troppo costosa.

Last. I cannot buy this overpriced bag. 

Scorso. Non posso comprare questa borsa troppo costosa.

I cannot buy this overpriced bag. Okay, so in this video, we learned that  

Non posso comprare questa borsa troppo costosa. Ok, quindi in questo video abbiamo imparato che

when we want to describe the cost of something,  as not too expensive, we say ‘affordable’. 

quando vogliamo descrivere il costo di qualcosa, come non troppo costoso, diciamo "conveniente".

Okay. Something is affordable if it's not too expensive. 

Va bene. Qualcosa è conveniente se non è troppo costoso.

If I can buy it with the money I have. On the other hand, if something is not affordable, 

Se posso comprarlo con i soldi che ho. D'altra parte, se qualcosa non è conveniente,

if the cost is very high, we  say ‘expensive’ or ‘overpriced’. 

se il costo è molto alto, diciamo "costoso" o "troppo caro".

For me, I think some brands like  H&M and Forever 21 are affordable. 

Per me, penso che alcuni marchi come H&M e Forever 21 siano convenienti.

Some people don't think this way. They think it's cheap. 

Alcune persone non la pensano in questo modo. Pensano che sia economico.

Sometimes, yes, some of the items can be cheap. But for me, I like those brands  

A volte, sì, alcuni articoli possono essere economici. Ma per me, mi piacciono quei marchi

because they are affordable. Another store that I like in Korea,  

perché sono convenienti. Un altro negozio che mi piace in Corea,   si

it's called Zara or Jara in Korea as they say. They have some items that are affordable and  

chiama Zara o Jara in Corea, come si suol dire. Hanno alcuni articoli convenienti e

some items that are very expensive. Too expensive for me to buy. 

alcuni articoli molto costosi. Troppo costoso per me da acquistare.
