I will introduce the past continuous tense.

Past Continuous Tense ကို တင်ဆက်ပေးသွားမှာပါ။ ဤတင်းမာမှုကို အတိတ်က လုပ်ဆောင်ခဲ့သည့်

This tense can be used to describe an action that was ongoing in the past.

လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တစ်ခုကို ဖော်ပြရန်အတွက် အသုံးပြုနိုင်သည်

It can also be used to describe two actions happening at the same time in the past.

Past Continuous Tense ရဲ့ ပထမဆုံးအသုံးပြုမှုကို

There's a lot to learn so let's get started.

Let's take a look at the first usage of the past continuous tense.

This tense can be used to describe an action that was ongoing in the past.

အတိတ်က လုပ်ဆောင်ခဲ့သည့်

လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တစ်ခုကို ဖော်ပြရန်အတွက် အသုံးပြုနိုင်သည်

Let's take a look at these examples.

။ ဒီဥပမာတွေကို ကြည့်ကြရအောင်။

‘I was walking in the park in the evening.’

'ညနေက ပန်းခြံထဲမှာ လမ်းလျှောက်နေတယ်။'

So first we start with the subject, ‘I’.

ဒါကြောင့် ဦးစွာ 'ငါ' ဆိုတဲ့ ဘာသာရပ်နဲ့ စပါမယ်။

ငါ ၊ သူ ၊ သူ ၊ အဲဒါ ၊ ငါတို့ က 'ဖြစ်ခဲ့ ' နဲ့ လိုက် တယ် ။

For I, he, she, and it, we follow with ‘was’.

‘I was’

ကြိယာရဲ့အဆုံးမှာ 'I was' နဲ့ 'ING' ကို ထည့်ပါမယ်။

And then we add an ‘ING’ to the end of the verb.

‘I was walking’

'ငါ လမ်းလျှောက်နေတယ်'

Now take a look at the whole sentence.

ကဲ စာကြောင်းတစ်ခုလုံးကို ကြည့်ပါ။

‘I was walking in the park in the evening.’

'ညနေက ပန်းခြံထဲမှာ လမ်းလျှောက်နေတယ်။'

You can see that this was an ongoing action and it happened in the past.

ဤသည်မှာ ဆက်လက်လုပ်ဆောင်နေ

ပြီး အတိတ်တွင် ဖြစ်ပျက်ခဲ့သည်ကို သင်မြင်နိုင်သည်။

Let's look at the next example.

နောက်ဥပမာကို ကြည့်ရအောင်။

‘She was living here last year.’

'သူမ မနှစ်တုန်းက ဒီမှာ နေခဲ့တယ်။'

Here, the subject is ‘she’.

ဒီနေရာမှာ ဘာသာရပ်က 'သူမ' ပါ။

So again we use ‘was’ and then ‘verb-ing’.

ဒါကြောင့် ' was ' နဲ့ ' verb-ing ' ကို ထပ်သုံးပါတယ်။ ဤတွင်

Here we have another expression that shows that this action was happening in the past.

ယခင်က ဤလုပ်ရပ်သည် ဖြစ်ပျက်ခဲ့သည်ကို

ပြသသော အခြားအသုံးအနှုန်းတစ်ခုရှိသည် ။

‘The dog,’ or ‘it’, ‘was eating dinner five minutes ago.’

'ခွေး' သို့မဟုတ် 'အဲဒါ' 'လွန်ခဲ့သည့်ငါးမိနစ်က ညစာစားနေခဲ့သည်။'

The subject here is ‘the dog’ which can be replaced by the pronoun ‘it’.

And so we follow with ‘was’.

And finally, ‘Andy and Jim,’ we can replace this with ‘they’.

For ‘you’, ‘we’ and ‘they’, we use ‘were’.

'မင်း'၊ 'ငါ' နဲ့ 'သူတို့' အတွက် 'were' ကို သုံးပါတယ်။

‘They were’, or ‘Andy and Jim were working at 9:00 p.m.’

'သူတို့တွေ' ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'Andy နဲ့ Jim က ည 9:00 နာရီမှာ အလုပ်ဆင်းတယ်'

Let's move on.

ဆက်လုပ်ကြရအောင်။

The past continuous tense is also used to describe an ongoing

past စဉ်ဆက်မပြတ် တင်းမာမှုကိုလည်း

အခြားလုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တစ်ခုက နှောက်ယှက်ခဲ့သည့်

action in the past that was interrupted by another action.

အတိတ်တွင် ဆက်လက်လုပ်ဆောင်နေသည့် လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်များကို ဖော်ပြရန်

This interrupting action is used in the past simple tense with the word ‘when’.

အတွက်လည်း အသုံးပြုပါသည် ။ ဤအနှောင့်အယှက်ပေးသည့်လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်ကို

'အခါ' ဟူသော စကားလုံးဖြင့် အတိတ်ရိုးရှင်းသောအချိန်ကာလတွင်

အသုံးပြုသည် ။ ဒီဥပမာကိုကြည့်ရအောင်။

Let's take a look at this example.

‘I was playing cards when you called.’

'မင်းခေါ်တုန်းက ငါဖဲရိုက်တယ်။'

Again we start with the subject ‘was’ or ‘were’,

နောက်တဖန် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် ဘာသာရပ် ' was ' သို့မဟုတ် 'were ' ဖြင့် စသည်၊

and then ‘verb-ing’,

ထို့နောက် 'ကြိယာ ing' ဖြင့် စတင်သည်၊

so this is the action that was ongoing in the past,

‘I was playing cards’

'I was playing cards' ဟူသော

The interrupting action in this sentence is ‘you called’.

'မင်းဟုခေါ်သည်။ '။

You'll notice I use the word ‘when’ to show the interrupting action’

အနှောင့်အယှက်ဖြစ်စေသော လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်ကိုပြသရန်

'အချိန်' ဟူသော စကားလုံးကို သုံးထားသည်ကို သတိပြုမိပြီး

And I used it in the past simple tense, ‘called’.

၎င်းကို ယခင်က ရိုးရှင်းသော အချိန်ကာလတွင် 'ဟုခေါ်သည်' ဟု သုံးခဲ့သည်။

Let's take a look at the next sentence.

နောက်စာကြောင်းကို လေ့လာကြည့်ရအောင်။

‘The cat' or 'it' was eating when Eric came home.’

အဲရစ်အိမ်ပြန်ရောက်တဲ့အခါ 'ကြောင်' ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'အဲဒါ' စားနေတယ်။

Again the action in progress is ‘the cat was eating’.

'ကြောင်က စားနေတယ်' ဆိုတဲ့ လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်ကို ထပ်မံလုပ်ဆောင်နေပါတယ်။

And ‘Eric came home’, you'll notice the past simple tense.

ပြီးတော့ 'အဲရစ် အိမ်ပြန်လာတယ်'၊

အတိတ်က ရိုးရှင်းတဲ့ တင်းမာမှုကို မင်း သတိထားမိလိမ့်မယ်။

This is the interrupting action used with the word ‘when’.

၎င်းသည် 'အခါ' ဟူသော စကားလုံးဖြင့် အသုံးပြုသည့် အနှောင့်အယှက်ပေးသည့် လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်ဖြစ်သည်။

‘We were sleeping when Anne arrived.’

'အန်နီ ရောက်တုန်းက ငါတို့ အိပ်ပျော်နေကြပြီ။'

နောက်တဖန် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် အတိတ်တွင် ဆက်လက်လုပ်ဆောင်နေပါသည်။

Again we have the ongoing action in the past.

ဒီနေရာမှာ ဘာသာရပ်က 'ငါ' ပါ။

The subject here is ‘we’.

And so we used ‘were’ and then ‘verb-ing’.

ဒါကြောင့် 'were' နဲ့ 'verb-ing' ဆိုပြီး သုံးပါတယ်။

‘When Anne arrived’ is the interrupting action.

And finally, ‘Alicia and I’, or ‘We' were walking when we saw Mark.’

‘When we saw Mark’ is the interrupting action that interrupted the ongoing ‘Alicia

It's also important to note that we can also switch the order of the sentence around and

say,

‘When you called, I was playing cards,’

or ‘When Eric came home, the cat was eating.’

ပတ်ပတ်လည်က ဝါကျရဲ့ အစီအစဥ်ကို ပြောင်း လည်း မှတ်သားထားဖို့ အရေးကြီးပါတယ်။

Let's move on.

အတိတ်အဆက်မပြတ်တင်းမာမှုအတွက် နောက်ထပ်အသုံးပြုမှု မှာ

Another usage for the past continuous tense is to talk about two actions that were

အတိတ်တွင် တစ်ချိန်တည်းဖြစ်ပျက်နေသည့်

လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်နှစ်ခုအကြောင်း ပြောဆိုခြင်းဖြစ်သည်

happening at the same time in the past.

We use the past continuous tense for both actions with the word ‘while’.

။ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည်

လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်နှစ်ခုလုံးအတွက် 'ခဏ' ဟူသော စကားလုံးကို အသုံးပြုပါသည်။

Let's take a look at some examples.

ဥပမာအချို့ကို လေ့လာကြည့်ရအောင်။

The first sentence says, ‘While I was playing soccer, she was watching

ပထမစာကြောင်းက

'ကျွန်တော် ဘောလုံးကစားနေတုန်း သူက ကျွန်တော့်ကို စောင့်ကြည့်နေတယ်' တဲ့။

me.’

လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်နှစ်ခုလုံး

You'll notice that both actions are in the past continuous tense.

သည် အတိတ်ကာလတွင် ဆက်တိုက်ဖြစ်နေကြောင်း သင်သတိပြုမိပါလိမ့်မည်။

‘I was playing soccer’ and ‘She was watching me’.

'ကျွန်တော် ဘောလုံးကစားနေတယ်' နဲ့ 'သူမက ငါ့ကိုကြည့်နေတယ်'။

အစတွင် 'ခဏ' ဟူသော စကားလုံးသည်

The word ‘while’ at the beginning shows that these actions were happening at the sametime.

ဤလုပ်ရပ်များသည် တစ်ချိန်တည်းတွင် ဖြစ်ပျက်နေကြောင်း ဖော်ပြသည်။

‘While you were reading, I was preparing dinner.’

'မင်းစာဖတ်နေတုန်း

ညစာပြင်နေတယ်' လုပ်ဆောင်ချက် နှစ်ခုလုံးကို အတိတ်ကာလ စဉ်ဆက်

Again both actions are expressed in the past continuous tense.

မပြတ်

တင်းမာမှုတွင် ဖော်ပြသည်။

The word ‘while’ shows that they were happening at the same time.

'ခဏ' ဟူသော စကားလုံးသည်

၎င်းတို့သည် တစ်ချိန်တည်း ဖြစ်ပျက်နေကြောင်း ဖော်ပြသည်။

‘While Her husband’ or ‘he’, ‘was driving

'သူ့ခင်ပွန်း'

ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'သူ' က ကားမောင်းနေရင်း ဓာတ်ပုံတွေရိုက်နေတယ်။

she was taking pictures.’

Both actions are in the past continuous tense.

လုပ်ဆောင်ချက် နှစ်ခုစလုံးသည် အတိတ်တွင် အဆက်မပြတ် တင်းမာနေပါသည်။

နောက်ဆုံးတော့ 'ငါတို့ ထမင်းစားနေတုန်း သီချင်းက တီးနေတယ်။'

And finally,

‘While we were eating, the music was playing.’

Both actions were happening at the same time.

လုပ်ဆောင်ချက် နှစ်ခုလုံးသည် တစ်ချိန်တည်း ဖြစ်ပျက်နေပါသည်။

Now, you'll notice that in my examples the word ‘while’ comes at the beginning,

ယခုတွင်၊ ကျွန်ုပ်၏နမူနာများတွင်

however, it's important to note that you can move the word ‘while’ around in several

For example, instead of saying this,

I can move ‘while’ to the middle of the sentence.

‘I was playing soccer while she was watching me.’

။ စာကြောင်းရဲ့အလယ်မှာ 'ခဏ' ရွှေ့လို့ရတယ်။

' သူငါ့ကိုကြည့်နေတုန်း

I can put the ‘while’ between the two actions.

ဘောလုံးကစားနေတယ်

Or I can also change the sentence around and say,

' လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်နှစ်ခုကြားတွင် 'ခဏ' ကို ထားနိုင်သည်။

‘While she was watching me, I was playing soccer.’

ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'သူငါ့ကိုကြည့်နေတုန်း၊

ငါဘောလုံးကစားနေတယ်' လို့

အနီးနားက ဝါကျကိုလည်း ပြောင်းပြီး ပြောနိုင်ပါတယ် ။ ဒါကြောင့် အစမှာထားရင်

So it doesn't matter which action comes first with the ‘while’ if you put it in the

beginning.

Let's move on.

Now let's talk about the negative form of the past continuous tense.

အခုတော့ အတိတ်ရဲ့ အဆက်မပြတ် တင်းမာမှုရဲ့

အနုတ်လက္ခဏာပုံစံအကြောင်း ပြောကြည့်ရအောင်

Here are some examples.

။ ဤသည်မှာ ဥပမာအချို့ဖြစ်သည်။

‘She was not reading last night.’

'မနေ့ညက စာမဖတ်ဘူး။'

အကြောင်းအရာက 'သူမ' ဖြစ်လို့ 'ဖြစ်ခဲ့' လို့ သုံးပါတယ်။

The subject is ‘she’ and so we use ‘was’.

However, before the ‘verb-ing’, we add ‘not’.

သို့သော်လည်း 'ကြိယာ-ing' ရှေ့မှာ 'not' ကို ထည့်တယ်။

‘She was not reading last night.’

'မနေ့ညက စာမဖတ်ဘူး။'

I can use a contraction and say,

ကျုံ့ပြီး

‘She wasn't reading last night.’

'မနေ့ညက သူမစာမဖတ်ဘူး' လို့ပြောနိုင်တယ်။

‘We were not listening to music this morning.’

'ငါတို့ ဒီမနက် သီချင်းနားမထောင်ဘူး'

In this case, the subject is ‘we’ and so we use ‘were’.

ဤကိစ္စတွင်၊ အကြောင်းအရာသည် 'ငါ' ဖြစ်သောကြောင့် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် 'were' ဟုသုံးသည်။

Again ‘not’ comes before the ‘verb-ing’.

တစ်ဖန် 'not' သည် 'ကြိယာ-ing' ၏ ရှေ့တွင် ရှိလာပြန်သည်။

‘We were not listening to music this morning.’

'ငါတို့ ဒီမနက် သီချင်းနားမထောင်ဘူး'

Again I can use a contraction and say,

'ငါတို့ ဒီမနက် သီချင်းနားမထောင်ဘူး'

‘We weren't listening to music this morning.’

လို့ ကျုံ့သွားပြန်တယ် ။

And the next one says, ‘He wasn't watching TV when his dad came

နောက်တစ်ယောက်ကတော့

'သူ့အဖေအိမ်ပြန်ရောက်တော့ တီဗီမကြည့်ဘူး' လို့ပြောတယ်။

In this example, the contraction is already there for you,

ဤဥပမာတွင်၊

'သူ တီဗီမကြည့်ဘူး'

‘He wasn't watching TV’.

သည် သင့်အတွက် ကျုံ့နေပြီဖြစ်သည် ။

You'll notice the word ‘when’.

Remember ‘when’ + ‘a past simple tense verb’ shows an interrupting action,

'အခါ' + 'အတိတ်ရိုးရိုးတင်းမာကြိယာ' သည်

အနှောင့်အယှက်ဖြစ်စေသော လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်ကို ပြသသည်ကို သတိရပါ၊

so, ‘When his dad came home he wasn't watching TV.’

ထို့ကြောင့် 'သူ့အဖေ အိမ်ပြန်ရောက်သောအခါ

တီဗီမကြည့်ဘူး'။

He was doing something else.

သူ တခြားတစ်ခုခုလုပ်နေတယ်။

And finally,

နောက်ဆုံးအနေနဲ့

‘They weren't talking while the game was playing.’

'ဂိမ်းကစားနေတုန်း စကားမပြောဖြစ်ကြဘူး'။

The word ‘while’ is in this sentence.

ဒီဝါကျမှာ 'ခဏ' ဆိုတဲ့ စကားလုံး ပါပါတယ်။

Remember that shows 2 past ongoing actions happening at the same time,

တစ်ချိန်တည်းမှာ ဖြစ်ပျက်နေတဲ့

အတိတ်က လုပ်ဆောင်ချက် 2 ခုကို ပြသထားတာ

so ‘While the game was playing they weren't talking’.

မို့ 'ဂိမ်းကစားနေချိန်မှာ

စကားမပြောဖြစ်ကြဘူး'။

They were doing something else.

သူတို့က တခြားတစ်ခုခုလုပ်နေတယ်။

Let's move on now.

အခု ဆက်သွားရအောင်

၊ အတိတ်ရဲ့ စဉ်ဆက်မပြတ် တင်းမာမှုအတွက်

Let's talk about how to form ‘be’ verb questions for the past continuous tense.

'be' ကြိယာမေးခွန်းတွေကို ဘယ်လိုဖွဲ့စည်းရမလဲဆိုတာ ဆွေးနွေးကြည့်ရအောင်

Take a look at the first statement.

။ ပထမဆုံးထုတ်ပြန်ချက်ကို ကြည့်ပါ။

It says,

'ဒီမနက် မိုးရွာနေတယ်' လို့ပြောတယ်။

‘It was raining this morning.’

ဒါကို မေးခွန်းတစ်ခုအဖြစ် ပြောင်းလဲနိုင်ဖို့က

In order to turn this into a question, it's quite easy,

တော်တော်လွယ်ပါတယ်၊

ပထမစကားလုံးနှစ်လုံးရဲ့

all we have to do is change the order of the first two words.

အစီအစဥ်ကို ပြောင်းလဲဖို့ပါပဲ

Instead of ‘It was’, I now say ‘Was it’ to make it a question.

။ 'အဲဒါ' အစား

အခုမေးခွန်းထုတ်ဖို့ 'ဟုတ်လား' လို့ ပြောလိုက်တယ်။

ကျန်တဲ့ စကားလုံးတွေက

You'll notice that the rest of the words stay in the same place.

တစ်နေရာတည်းမှာ ရှိနေတာကို သတိထားမိမှာပါ။

‘Was it raining this morning?’

'ဒီမနက် မိုးရွာနေသလား'

You can answer by saying, ‘Yes, it was.’ or ‘No, it wasn't.’

'ဟုတ်ပါတယ်'

လို့ ဖြေနိုင်ပါတယ်

။ ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ မဟုတ်ဘူး။'

The next statement says,

နောက်တချက်က

‘They were living there when the fire happened.’

'မီးလောင်တုန်းက သူတို့နေထိုင်တယ်' တဲ့။

To turn this into a big question, again we just switched the order of the first two words.

ဒါကို မေးခွန်းကြီးတစ်ခုအဖြစ် ပြောင်းလဲဖို့အတွက်

ပထမစကားလုံးနှစ်လုံးရဲ့ အစီအစဥ်ကို ထပ်ပြောင်းလိုက်ပြန်တယ်။

Instead of ‘They were’, we say ‘Were they’.

'သူတို့ဖြစ်ခဲ့သည်' အစား 'သူတို့ဖြစ်ခဲ့သလား' ဟုဆိုသည်။

And again, the rest of the words can stay in the same place.

ထို့အပြင်

And you can answer by saying,

Now I'll go into how to make WH questions for the past continuous tense.

WH မေးခွန်းများကို မည်သို့ပြုလုပ်ရမည်ကို လေ့လာပါမည်

You'll notice that the examples here all begin with some WH words.

For example, ‘what’, ‘where’, ‘why’, and ‘who’.

Let's take a look at the first question.

The subject of this sentence is ‘they’.

ဤဝါကျ၏အကြောင်းအရာမှာ 'သူတို့' ဖြစ်သည်။

So what you do is after the WH word you put the proper ‘be’ verb.

ဒါကြောင့် သင်လုပ်တာက WH ဆိုတဲ့စကားလုံးရဲ့နောက်မှာ

သင့်လျော်တဲ့ 'be' ကြိယာကို ထည့်တာပါ။

In this case, ‘were’.

You'll notice that after the subject comes the ‘verb-ing’.

I can answer by saying, ‘They were playing games’ or

'သူတို့က ဂိမ်းဆော့နေတာ'

ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'စာအုပ်ဖတ်နေတယ်'

‘They were reading a book’.

လို့ ဖြေနိုင်ပါတယ် ။

The next question says,

နောက်မေးခွန်းတစ်ခုကတော့

‘Where was he working last week?’

'ပြီးခဲ့တဲ့အပတ်က သူဘယ်မှာအလုပ်လုပ်နေလဲ'

In this case the subject is ‘he’ and so the be verb to use is ‘was’.

တဲ့။ ဒီနေရာမှာ subject က 'he'

ဖြစ်လို့ be verb က 'was' ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

‘Where was he working last week?’

'ပြီးခဲ့တဲ့အပတ်က သူဘယ်မှာအလုပ်လုပ်တာလဲ။'

I can say, ‘He was working in Canada.’

'သူက Canada မှာ အလုပ်လုပ်နေတယ်' လို့

ပြောလို့ရပါတယ် ။

‘Why was she crying when she finished the book?’

'စာအုပ်​ပြီး​တော့ သူဘာလို့ငို​နေတာလဲ'

In this case, the subject is ‘she’ and so I put ‘was’ after ‘why’.

ဒီနေရာမှာ

ဘာသာရပ်က 'သူမ' ဆိုတော့ 'ဘာကြောင့်' ရဲ့နောက်မှာ 'ဖြစ်ခဲ့' လို့ ရေးထားပါတယ်။

‘Why was she crying when she finished the book?’

'စာအုပ်​ပြီး​တော့ သူဘာလို့ငို​နေတာလဲ'

I can say, ‘She was crying because the ending was sad.’

'အဆုံးသတ်က ဝမ်းနည်းလို့ ငိုခဲ့တယ်' လို့

ပြောနိုင်ပါတယ် ။

And finally,

နောက်ဆုံးအနေနဲ့

‘Who were the children staying with while their mom was working?’

' သူတို့အမေ အလုပ်လုပ်နေတဲ့

In this case, ‘the children’ is a ‘they’

Take a look at the first sentence.

I want you to try to fill in the blank with the negative for the verb ‘stay’.

‘not stay’

What do you think it is?

Remember, for the negative of the past continuous,

အတိတ်ရဲ့ အနှုတ်လက္ခဏာကို ဆက်တိုက်

all you have to do is put ‘not’ and then ‘verb-ing’ after the 'be' verb.

လုပ်ရမှာက 'မ'

နဲ့ 'be' ကြိယာနောက်မှာ 'ကြိယာ' ကို ပေါင်းထည့်ရမှာကို သတိရပါ။

‘They were not staying at school last.’

The next sentence says,

နောက်စာကြောင်းက

‘Two days ago you blank soccer.’

'လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့နှစ်ရက်က မင်းဘောလုံးကန်ခဲ့တယ်' တဲ့။

နောက်တစ်ကြိမ် 'play' ကြိယာအတွက် အနုတ်လက္ခဏာကို စမ်းကြည့်ပါ။

Again try the negative for the verb ‘play’.

‘Two days ago blank not play soccer.’

'လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ နှစ်ရက်လောက်က ဘောလုံးမကစားဘူး.'

In this case, the first thing that's missing is the ‘be’ verb.

ဤကိစ္စတွင်၊

ပထမဆုံး လွဲမှားသောအချက်မှာ 'be' ကြိယာဖြစ်သည်။

If the subject is ‘you’, can you think of which be verb needs to be put in there?

အကြောင်းအရာသည် 'သင်' ဖြစ်ပါက

မည်သည့် ကြိယာကို ထည့်သွင်းရမည်ကို သင်စဉ်းစားနိုင်ပါသလား။

The correct answer is ‘were’.

အဖြေမှန်က 'were' ပါ။

And then, we say ‘not’.

What happens after that?

Remember, ‘verb-ing’.

You can also use a contraction and say,

'မင်း ဘောလုံးမကစားဘူး'

လို့လည်း ပြောလို့ရပါတယ်

‘You weren't playing soccer.’

Now try to find the mistake in the next sentence.

‘Yesterday, she were reading at home.’

The subject of this sentence is ‘she’ so the ‘be’ verb to use is not ‘were’.

It's 'was'.

‘Yesterday, she was reading at home.’

In the next sentence it says, ‘Tomorrow, they were seeing their friends.’

'မနက်ဖြန်၊ သူငယ်ချင်းတွေနဲ့ တွေ့ကြပြီ' လို့ ရေးထားပါတယ်။

‘They’ and ‘were’

'သူတို့' နဲ့ 'ရှိခဲ့' ဒါမှန်တယ်။

That's correct.

And we have the ‘verb-ing’

So what's the mistake?

ဒါဆို ဘာအမှားလဲ။

အတိတ်ကို စဉ်ဆက်မပြတ်သတိရခြင်းသည် အတိတ်အတွက်ဖြစ်သည်။

Remember the past continuous is for the past.

‘Tomorrow’ is not the past.

'မနက်ဖြန်' သည် အတိတ်မဟုတ်ပါ။

So instead, we need to put a word that shows the past.

For example, I can say, ‘yesterday’.

Now, let's start a checkup of the ‘when’ usage

Take a look at the first example.

'အခါ' အသုံးပြုမှုကို စစ်ဆေးကြည့်ကြပါစို့

It says, ‘Andrea and John’ blank when they bank hurt.’

ပထမဥပမာကိုကြည့်ပါ။ 'အန်ဒရီယာ နဲ့ ဂျွန်' က သူတို့ ဘဏ်မှာ ထိခိုက်မိရင် လွတ်သွားတယ်လို့

ပြောတယ် ။

Remember ‘when’ shows an interrupting action.

It needs to be used with the past simple tense.

So let's first look at the second blank.

What's the past tense of the verb ‘get’?

Now let's take a look at the action that was in progress in the past.

‘Andrea and John’ or ‘they’

'Andrea နှင့် John'

သို့မဟုတ် 'သူတို့'

Well what comes after ‘they’?

အင်း 'သူတို့' ပြီးနောက် ဘာဖြစ်လာသနည်း။

‘were’.

'နေခဲ့တယ်'

‘Andrea and John were’

'Andrea နှင့် John were'

ထို့နောက် ကြိယာတွင် -ing ထည့်ရန် လိုအပ်ကြောင်း သတိရပါ။

Then remember we need to add -ing to the verb.

‘They were skiing’ or ‘Andrea and John were skiing when they got hurt’.

ကြည့်ပါ ။ 'စတင်သည်'

Now let's look at the first part of the sentence.

ကဲ ဝါကျရဲ့ ပထမပိုင်းကို ကြည့်ရအောင်။

The subject is ‘it’.

အကြောင်းအရာကတော့ 'ဒါ' ပါ။

So what ‘be’ verb do we use for 'it'?

ဒါဆို 'be' ကြိယာက 'it' အတွက် သုံးတာလား။

‘was’

'ပွဲစတုန်းက မိုးမရွာဘူး'

‘It was not raining when the game started.’

တဲ့ ။

Now find the mistake in the next sentence.

အခု နောက်စာကြောင်းမှာ အမှားကိုရှာပါ။

‘I wasn't study at the library yesterday’.

'မနေ့က စာကြည့်တိုက်မှာ စာမသင်ဘူး'

The subject here is ‘I’ and so the ‘be’ verb ‘was’ is correct.

ဒီနေရာမှာ ဘာသာရပ်က 'ငါ' ဆိုတော့ 'be' ကြိယာ 'was' က မှန်တယ်။

Here there's a contraction, ‘I wasn't’ for ‘I was not’.

ဤတွင် 'ငါမဟုတ်' 'ငါမဟုတ်' အတွက်

ကျုံ့ခြင်းတစ်ခုရှိသည် ။

Now the problem is with the verb.

အခု ပြဿနာက ကြိယာနဲ့။ ကြိယာ၏အဆုံးတွင်

Remember we need to put ‘–ing’ at the end of the verb.

'–ing' ကို ထည့်ရန် လိုအပ်သည်ကို သတိရပါ

။

‘I wasn't studying at the library yesterday.’

'မနေ့က စာကြည့်တိုက်မှာ စာမသင်ဘူး။'

And finally, ‘We did meet our friends last weekend.’

နောက်ဆုံးအနေနဲ့

'ပြီးခဲ့တဲ့အပတ်က ငါတို့သူငယ်ချင်းတွေနဲ့ တွေ့ခဲ့တယ်'

That sounds right, but remember we're doing the past continuous tense.

ဒါမှန်

ပေမယ့် ငါတို့က အတိတ်ကို အဆက်မပြတ်လုပ်နေတာ သတိရပါ။

Take a look again.

ထပ်ကြည့်ပါဦး။

The subject is ‘we’.

အကြောင်းအရာက 'ငါတို့' တဲ့။

We need a ‘be’ verb.

'be' ကြိယာလိုတယ်။

'နေလား'

‘were’

Then what happens?

ဒါဆို ဘာဖြစ်သွားတာလဲ။

Remember, we need to add an ‘-ing’ to the end of the verb,

ကြိယာ၏အဆုံးတွင်

'-ing' ကို ထည့်ရန် လိုအပ်သည်

so we take out ‘did’ and say, ‘We were meeting our friends last weekend.’

၊ ထို့ကြောင့် 'd' ကိုထုတ်ကာ

'ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ ပြီးခဲ့သော အပတ်က သူငယ်ချင်းများနှင့် တွေ့ဆုံခဲ့သည်' ဟု ပြောသည်ကို သတိရပါ။

When we use ‘while’ in the past continuous tense,

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် 'while' ကို past continuous tense ကိုသုံးသောအခါ၊

we're showing that two actions happened at the same time in the past

လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်နှစ်ခုသည်

အတိတ်တွင်တစ်ချိန်တည်း ဖြစ်ခဲ့သည်

or they were happening at the same time in the past.

Now ‘someone’ can be a ‘he’ or ‘she’.

အခု 'တစ်စုံတစ်ယောက်' က 'သူ' ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'သူမ' ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်။

Therefore, again we need to use ‘was’

ထို့ကြောင့် ' was ' နှင့် 'ခိုးယူ ' ၏ 'ကြိယာ'

and then the ‘verb-ing’ of ‘steal’.

‘While I was shopping, someone was stealing my bike.’

The next sentence says,

‘While he blank’

'While he blank' ဆိုပြီး

I want you to use the verb ‘cook’.

ကြိယာ 'cook' ကို သုံးစေချင်တယ်။

The subject is ‘he’ and so I need to use ‘was cooking’.

ဘာသာရပ်က 'သူ' ဆိုတော့ ' was cooking' လို့ သုံးရမယ်။

‘While he was cooking, his girlfriend was cleaning.’

'သူဟင်းချက်နေတုန်း သူ့ကောင်မလေးက သန့်ရှင်းရေးလုပ်နေတယ်'

Did you get that?

Try to find the mistake in the next sentence.

The first part of the sentence is correct.

ဝါကျရဲ့ ပထမအပိုင်းက မှန်တယ်။

‘Jane was looking’

'Jane was looking'

Now the second part of the sentence.

အခုဝါကျရဲ့ ဒုတိယပိုင်း။

Notice it's not in the past continuous tense.

သတိပြုရန်မှာ ၎င်းသည် အတိတ်အဆက်မပြတ် တင်းမာမှုတွင် မဟုတ်ပေ။

‘While we get off the plane’

'ငါတို့ လေယာဉ်ပေါ်ကဆင်းတုန်း'

So what we need to do is say, ‘were getting’.

ဒီတော့ ငါတို့လုပ်ရမှာက 'လာပြီ' တဲ့။

‘Jane was looking for us while we were getting off the plane.’

'ငါတို့လေယာဉ်ပေါ်ကဆင်းတုန်း Jane က ငါတို့ကိုလိုက်ရှာနေတယ်'

The next sentence says, 'I was watching TV while my wife sleep’

နောက်ဝါကျမှာ

'I was watching while my wife sleep'

Again this part of the sentence did not use the past continuous tense.

ဆိုတဲ့ ဝါကျရဲ့ တစ်စိတ်တစ်ပိုင်းဖြစ်တဲ့

past continuous tense ကို အသုံးမပြုခဲ့ပြန်ပါဘူး။

ငါ့မိန်းမက 'သူ' ဆိုတော့ 'အိပ်နေတယ်' လို့ ပြောရမယ်။

My wife is a ‘she’ and so I need to say ‘was sleeping’.

‘I was watching TV while my wife was sleeping.’

'ကျွန်မ ဇနီး အိပ်ပျော်နေချိန် တီဗီကြည့်နေတယ်'
