English Slang / Idioms: Hella Hecka

Hello, everybody. My name is Esther.

And in this video, we're going to talk about  a slang word that comes from California. 

このビデオで は、カリフォルニアに由来するスラング ワードについて説明します。

That's where I'm from. This slang word is actually  

それが私の出身地です。 この俗語は、実際には

from Northern California, in areas like San Francisco,  

サンフランシスコ、サンノゼ、オークランドなどの北カリフォルニアに由来し

San Jose, and Oakland. And this word is the slang word ‘hella’.

And it actually has two different meanings. So let's look at how it's

used in some sentences, okay. So here's the first example sentence.

“This room is ‘hella’ hot.” hmm…

How is ‘hella’ used? It's used to mean the

word ‘really’ or ‘very’, right? “This room is very hot.” or  

「本当に」または「非常に」という意味で使用されていますよね？ 「この部屋はとても暑いです。」 または

“This room is really hot.” In that case, we can say,  

「この部屋はとても暑いです。」 その場合、

“This room is hella hot.” mm-hmm so that's the first meaning. 

「この部屋はとても暑い」と言えます。 うーん、それが最初の意味です。

Let's move on to the second meaning. And here's another example sentence. 

2番目の意味に移りましょう。 そして、もう一つ例文を。

“There's hella food at home.” hmm That doesn't match the word ‘really’, right? 

「家にはおいしい食べ物がある。」 うーん、それは「本当に」という言葉と一致しませんよね？

Let's look. There's really food at home. 

見てみよう。 家には本当に食べ物があります。

It doesn't make sense actually. In the second sentence,  

実際には意味がありません。 2 番目の文の

‘hella’ is used to mean there's ‘a lot  of’ or there's ‘many’ things, right? 

「hella」は、「多く の」または「多くの」ものがあるという意味で使用されていますね。

So in this case, instead of saying, “There's a lot of food at home,” 

したがって、この場合、 「家にはたくさんの食べ物があります」と

we can say, “There's hella food at home.” So hurry and go home and eat some of that food. 

言う代わりに、「家にはたくさんの食べ物があります」と言うことができます。 だから急いで家に帰ってその食べ物を食べなさい。

Now under ‘hella’, I've written the word ‘hecka’. And that's because some people feel  

「へら」の下に、「へっか」という言葉を書きました。 それは、

uncomfortable using the word ‘hella’, right? Because ‘hella’ has the word ‘hell’, right? 

「ヘラ」という言葉を不快に感じる人がいるからですよね？ 「へら」には「地獄」という言葉があるからですよね？

And ‘hell’ can sometimes be used to express an  emotion that's negative or very strong, right? 

また、「地獄」は、否定的または非常に強い感情を表現するために使用されることがあります よね？

And in that case, people use ‘heck’, right? So again, instead of ‘hella’ some people say  

その場合、人々は「ヘック」を使用しますよね？ 繰り返しになりますが、「ヘラ」の代わりに「ヘッカ」と言う人もい

‘hecka’. mm-hmm 

ます。

So we can say, “There's hecka food at home.” Again, it means the same thing - there's  

うーん、「家には食べ物がたくさんある」と言えます。 繰り返しますが、意味は同じです

a lot of food at home. “There's hecka food at home.” 

。家にはたくさんの食べ物があります。 「家には食べ物がたくさんある。」

But if you don't want to use  ‘hella’, you can use this one. 

ただし、「hella」を使用したくない場合は 、これを使用できます。

And in the same way you can use ‘hecka’ to  substitute ‘hella’ in the first sentence as well. 

同様に、最初の文の「hella」を「hecka」に置き換えることもできます 。

“This room is hecka hot.” Right? “This room is hecka hot.” 

「この部屋、めちゃくちゃ暑いです。」 右？ 「この部屋、めちゃくちゃ暑いです。」

It's very hot in here but I  don't want to say ‘hella’. 

ここはとても暑いですが、 「ヘラ」とは言いたくありません。

But remember, again, this slang word ‘hella’ and  ‘hecka’ is actually from Northern California, 

ただし、繰り返しになりますが、この俗語「hella」と 「hecka」は実際には北カリフォルニアのものである

so you might not hear it or people  might not understand what you mean 

ため、ニューヨークや英国などの他の場所で使用すると、聞こえなかったり、意味が理解できなかったりする可能性があります

if you use it in other places  such as New York or the UK.

So keep that in mind. Okay so let's look at a couple examples sentences. 

ですから、それを覚えておいてください。 それでは、いくつかの例文を見てみましょう。

“This pizza is hella good.” “This pizza is hella good.” 

「このピザは最高です。」 「このピザは最高です。」

“You look hella pretty.” “You look hella pretty.”

“Your hair is hecka long.” “Your hair is hecka long.”

“There's hecka people at this concert.” “There's hecka people at this concert.” 

「このコンサートにはすごい人がいる。」 「このコンサートにはすごい人がいる。」

Now, remember, this is the sentence where you  would use ‘hecka’ to mean ‘a lot of’, right? 

さて、覚えておいてください、これは 「たくさん」を意味するために「ヘッカ」を使用する文ですよね？

So, again, “There's hecka people at this concert.” 

繰り返しになりますが、「このコンサートにはすごい人がいます」。

“I have hella things to do.” “I have hella things to do.” 

「私にはやるべきことがたくさんあります。」 「私にはやるべきことがたくさんあります。」

Okay, so those are the ways that we can use  ‘hella’ or ‘hecka’ in our everyday speech.

But I want to remind you guys, one more time,

this slang is used mostly in Northern California. Now, for those of you who like

and enjoy hip-hop music. Some hip-hop artists from that area,

such as e-40, and the Federation,  use the slang word in their music.

They use ‘hella’ mostly. So next time you decide
