English Slang / Idioms: Hella Hecka

Hello, everybody. My name is Esther.

And in this video, we're going to talk about  a slang word that comes from California. 

E in questo video parleremo di una parola gergale che viene dalla California.

That's where I'm from. This slang word is actually  

Ecco da dove vengo. Questa parola gergale viene in realtà

from Northern California, in areas like San Francisco,  

dalla California settentrionale, in aree come San Francisco,

San Jose, and Oakland. And this word is the slang word ‘hella’. 

San Jose e Oakland. E questa parola è la parola gergale "hella".

And it actually has two different meanings. So let's look at how it's

used in some sentences, okay. So here's the first example sentence. 

utilizzato in alcune frasi, ok. Quindi ecco la prima frase di esempio.

“This room is ‘hella’ hot.” hmm… 

"Questa stanza è molto calda." hmm...

How is ‘hella’ used? It's used to mean the  

Come si usa "hella"? È usato per indicare la

word ‘really’ or ‘very’, right? “This room is very hot.” or  

parola "davvero" o "molto", giusto? "Questa stanza è molto calda." oppure

“This room is really hot.” In that case, we can say,  

"Questa stanza è molto calda". In tal caso, possiamo dire

“This room is hella hot.” mm-hmm so that's the first meaning. 

"Questa stanza è caldissima". mm-hmm quindi questo è il primo significato.

Let's move on to the second meaning. And here's another example sentence. 

Passiamo al secondo significato. Ed ecco un'altra frase di esempio.

“There's hella food at home.” hmm That doesn't match the word ‘really’, right? 

"C'è del cibo a casa." hmm Questo non corrisponde alla parola "davvero", giusto?

Let's look. There's really food at home. 

Guardiamo. C'è davvero del cibo a casa.

It doesn't make sense actually. In the second sentence,  

Non ha senso in realtà. Nella seconda frase,

‘hella’ is used to mean there's ‘a lot  of’ or there's ‘many’ things, right? 

"hella" è usato per indicare che ci sono "a lot of" o ci sono "molte" cose, giusto?

So in this case, instead of saying, “There's a lot of food at home,” 

Quindi, in questo caso, invece di dire "C'è un sacco di cibo a casa",

we can say, “There's hella food at home.” So hurry and go home and eat some of that food. 

possiamo dire "C'è molto cibo a casa". Quindi sbrigati e vai a casa e mangia un po' di quel cibo.

Now under ‘hella’, I've written the word ‘hecka’. And that's because some people feel  

Ora sotto "hella", ho scritto la parola "hecka". E questo perché alcune persone si sentono

uncomfortable using the word ‘hella’, right? Because ‘hella’ has the word ‘hell’, right? 

a disagio nell'usare la parola "hella", giusto? Perché "hella" ha la parola "inferno", giusto?

And ‘hell’ can sometimes be used to express an  emotion that's negative or very strong, right? 

E "inferno" a volte può essere usato per esprimere un'emozione negativa o molto forte, giusto?

And in that case, people use ‘heck’, right? So again, instead of ‘hella’ some people say  

E in tal caso, le persone usano "diamine", giusto? Quindi, di nuovo, invece di "hella" alcune persone dicono

‘hecka’. mm-hmm 

"hecka". mm-hmm

So we can say, “There's hecka food at home.” Again, it means the same thing - there's

a lot of food at home. “There's hecka food at home.” 

molto cibo a casa. "C'è da mangiare a casa."

But if you don't want to use  ‘hella’, you can use this one. 

Ma se non vuoi usare 'hella', puoi usare questo.

And in the same way you can use ‘hecka’ to  substitute ‘hella’ in the first sentence as well. 

E allo stesso modo puoi usare "hecka" anche per sostituire "hella" nella prima frase.

“This room is hecka hot.” Right? “This room is hecka hot.” 

"Questa stanza è dannatamente calda." Giusto? "Questa stanza è dannatamente calda."

It's very hot in here but I  don't want to say ‘hella’. 

Fa molto caldo qui, ma non voglio dire "ciao".

But remember, again, this slang word ‘hella’ and  ‘hecka’ is actually from Northern California, 

Ma ricorda, ancora una volta, questa parola gergale "hella" e " hecka" in realtà proviene dalla California settentrionale,

so you might not hear it or people  might not understand what you mean 

quindi potresti non sentirla o le persone potrebbero non capire cosa intendi

if you use it in other places  such as New York or the UK. 

se la usi in altri luoghi come New York o nel Regno Unito.

So keep that in mind. Okay so let's look at a couple examples sentences. 

Quindi tienilo a mente. Va bene, quindi diamo un'occhiata a un paio di frasi di esempio.

“This pizza is hella good.” “This pizza is hella good.” 

“Questa pizza è molto buona.” “Questa pizza è molto buona.”

“You look hella pretty.” “You look hella pretty.” 

"Sei molto carina." "Sei molto carina."

“Your hair is hecka long.” “Your hair is hecka long.” 

"I tuoi capelli sono dannatamente lunghi." "I tuoi capelli sono dannatamente lunghi."

“There's hecka people at this concert.” “There's hecka people at this concert.” 

"C'è un sacco di gente a questo concerto." "C'è un sacco di gente a questo concerto."

Now, remember, this is the sentence where you  would use ‘hecka’ to mean ‘a lot of’, right? 

Ora, ricorda, questa è la frase in cui useresti "hecka" per indicare "molto", giusto?

So, again, “There's hecka people at this concert.” 

Quindi, ancora una volta, "Ci sono un sacco di persone a questo concerto".

“I have hella things to do.” “I have hella things to do.” 

"Ho un sacco di cose da fare." "Ho un sacco di cose da fare."

Okay, so those are the ways that we can use  ‘hella’ or ‘hecka’ in our everyday speech. 

Ok, quindi questi sono i modi in cui possiamo usare "hella" o "hecka" nel nostro discorso quotidiano.

But I want to remind you guys, one more time,

this slang is used mostly in Northern California. Now, for those of you who like
