English Slang / Idioms: Hella Hecka

Hello, everybody. My name is Esther. 

Hola todos. Mi nombre es Esther.

And in this video, we're going to talk about  a slang word that comes from California. 

Y en este video, vamos a hablar sobre una palabra de argot que proviene de California.

That's where I'm from. This slang word is actually  

De ahí soy. Esta palabra de la jerga en realidad

from Northern California, in areas like San Francisco,  

proviene del norte de California, en áreas como San Francisco,

San Jose, and Oakland. And this word is the slang word ‘hella’. 

San José y Oakland. Y esta palabra es la palabra del argot 'hella'.

And it actually has two different meanings. So let's look at how it's  

Y en realidad tiene dos significados diferentes. Entonces, veamos cómo se

used in some sentences, okay. So here's the first example sentence. 

usa en algunas oraciones, está bien. Así que aquí está la primera oración de ejemplo.

“This room is ‘hella’ hot.” hmm… 

"Esta habitación es 'hella' caliente". hmm...

How is ‘hella’ used? It's used to mean the  

¿Cómo se usa "hella"? Se usa para referirse a la

word ‘really’ or ‘very’, right? “This room is very hot.” or  

palabra "realmente" o "muy", ¿verdad? "Esta habitación está muy caliente". o

“This room is really hot.” In that case, we can say,  

"Esta habitación está muy caliente". En ese caso, podemos decir:

“This room is hella hot.” mm-hmm so that's the first meaning. 

"Esta habitación está muy caliente". mm-hmm así que ese es el primer significado.

Let's move on to the second meaning. And here's another example sentence. 

Pasemos al segundo significado. Y aquí hay otra oración de ejemplo.

“There's hella food at home.” hmm That doesn't match the word ‘really’, right? 

"Hay comida hella en casa". hmm Eso no coincide con la palabra 'realmente', ¿verdad?

Let's look. There's really food at home. 

Miremos. Realmente hay comida en casa.

It doesn't make sense actually. In the second sentence,  

No tiene sentido en realidad. En la segunda oración,

‘hella’ is used to mean there's ‘a lot  of’ or there's ‘many’ things, right? 

"hella" se usa para indicar que hay " muchas" o "muchas" cosas, ¿verdad?

So in this case, instead of saying, “There's a lot of food at home,” 

Entonces, en este caso, en lugar de decir: "Hay mucha comida en casa"

we can say, “There's hella food at home.” So hurry and go home and eat some of that food. 

, podemos decir: "Hay mucha comida en casa". Así que date prisa y ve a casa y come algo de esa comida.

Now under ‘hella’, I've written the word ‘hecka’. And that's because some people feel  

Ahora bajo 'hella', he escrito la palabra 'hecka'. Y eso es porque algunas personas se sienten

uncomfortable using the word ‘hella’, right? Because ‘hella’ has the word ‘hell’, right?

And ‘hell’ can sometimes be used to express an  emotion that's negative or very strong, right?

And in that case, people use ‘heck’, right? So again, instead of ‘hella’ some people say  

Y en ese caso, la gente usa 'diablos', ¿verdad? Entonces, de nuevo, en lugar de "hella", algunas personas dicen

‘hecka’. mm-hmm 

"hecka". mm-hmm

So we can say, “There's hecka food at home.” Again, it means the same thing - there's

a lot of food at home. “There's hecka food at home.” 

hay mucha comida en casa. "Hay comida hecka en casa".

But if you don't want to use  ‘hella’, you can use this one. 

Pero si no quieres usar 'hella', puedes usar este.

And in the same way you can use ‘hecka’ to  substitute ‘hella’ in the first sentence as well. 

Y de la misma manera, también puede usar 'hecka' para sustituir 'hella' en la primera oración.

“This room is hecka hot.” Right? “This room is hecka hot.” 

"Esta habitación está muy caliente". ¿Derecho? "Esta habitación está muy caliente".

It's very hot in here but I  don't want to say ‘hella’. 

Hace mucho calor aquí, pero no quiero decir 'hola'.

But remember, again, this slang word ‘hella’ and  ‘hecka’ is actually from Northern California, 

Pero recuerda, de nuevo, esta palabra del argot 'hella' y 'hecka' es en realidad del norte de California,

so you might not hear it or people  might not understand what you mean

if you use it in other places  such as New York or the UK.

So keep that in mind. Okay so let's look at a couple examples sentences.

“This pizza is hella good.” “This pizza is hella good.”

“You look hella pretty.” “You look hella pretty.”

“Your hair is hecka long.” “Your hair is hecka long.” 

"Tu cabello es muy largo". "Tu cabello es muy largo".

“There's hecka people at this concert.” “There's hecka people at this concert.” 

"Hay mucha gente en este concierto". "Hay mucha gente en este concierto".

Now, remember, this is the sentence where you  would use ‘hecka’ to mean ‘a lot of’, right? 

Ahora, recuerda, esta es la oración en la que usarías 'hecka' para significar 'mucho', ¿verdad?

So, again, “There's hecka people at this concert.” 

Entonces, de nuevo, "Hay mucha gente en este concierto".

“I have hella things to do.” “I have hella things to do.” 

Tengo muchas cosas que hacer. Tengo muchas cosas que hacer.

Okay, so those are the ways that we can use  ‘hella’ or ‘hecka’ in our everyday speech.

But I want to remind you guys, one more time,

this slang is used mostly in Northern California. Now, for those of you who like

and enjoy hip-hop music. Some hip-hop artists from that area,
