English Slang / Idioms: Hella Hecka

Hello, everybody. My name is Esther. 

모두들 안녕. 제 이름은 에스더입니다.

And in this video, we're going to talk about  a slang word that comes from California. 

이 동영상에서는 캘리포니아에서 온 속어에 대해 이야기하겠습니다.

That's where I'm from. This slang word is actually  

그곳이 바로 내가 온 곳입니다. 이 속어는 실제로

from Northern California, in areas like San Francisco,  

샌프란시스코,

San Jose, and Oakland. And this word is the slang word ‘hella’. 

산호세, 오클랜드와 같은 북부 캘리포니아에서 온 말입니다. 그리고 이 단어는 속어인 'hella'입니다.

And it actually has two different meanings. So let's look at how it's  

그리고 그것은 실제로 두 가지 다른 의미를 가지고 있습니다. 그래서 그것이

used in some sentences, okay. So here's the first example sentence. 

어떤 문장에서 어떻게 사용되는지 봅시다. 여기 첫 번째 예문이 있습니다.

“This room is ‘hella’ hot.” hmm… 

"이 방은 '엄청나게' 덥다." 흠...

How is ‘hella’ used? It's used to mean the  

'hella'는 어떻게 쓰나요?

word ‘really’ or ‘very’, right? “This room is very hot.” or  

'really' 또는 'very'라는 단어를 의미하는 데 사용됩니다. 맞나요? "이 방은 매우 덥습니다." 또는

“This room is really hot.” In that case, we can say,  

"이 방은 정말 덥습니다." 이 경우

“This room is hella hot.” mm-hmm so that's the first meaning. 

"이 방은 정말 덥습니다."라고 말할 수 있습니다. mm-hmm 그래서 그것이 첫 번째 의미입니다.

Let's move on to the second meaning. And here's another example sentence. 

두 번째 의미로 넘어 갑시다. 그리고 여기에 또 다른 예문이 있습니다.

“There's hella food at home.” hmm That doesn't match the word ‘really’, right? 

"집에 엄청난 음식이 있습니다." 흠 '정말'이라는 단어와 어울리지 않죠?

Let's look. There's really food at home. 

한번 보자. 집에 정말 먹을 것이 있습니다.

It doesn't make sense actually. In the second sentence,  

사실 말이 되지 않습니다. 두 번째 문장에서

‘hella’ is used to mean there's ‘a lot  of’ or there's ‘many’ things, right? 

'hella'는 ' 많다' 또는 '많은' 것을 의미하는 데 사용됩니다. 맞나요?

So in this case, instead of saying, “There's a lot of food at home,” 

따라서 이 경우에는 "집에 음식이 많아요"라고 말하는 대신

we can say, “There's hella food at home.” So hurry and go home and eat some of that food. 

"집에 엄청난 음식이 있어요"라고 말할 수 있습니다. 그러니 서둘러 집에 가서 그 음식을 좀 먹어라.

Now under ‘hella’, I've written the word ‘hecka’. And that's because some people feel  

이제 'hella' 아래에 'hecka'라는 단어를 썼습니다. 그리고

uncomfortable using the word ‘hella’, right? Because ‘hella’ has the word ‘hell’, right? 

'hella'라는 단어를 사용하는 것을 불편하게 느끼시는 분들도 계시기 때문이겠죠? 'hella'에 'hell'이라는 단어가 있으니까요?

And ‘hell’ can sometimes be used to express an  emotion that's negative or very strong, right? 

그리고 '지옥'은 때때로 부정적이거나 매우 강한 감정을 표현하는 데 사용될 수 있습니다.

And in that case, people use ‘heck’, right? So again, instead of ‘hella’ some people say  

그리고 그럴 때 사람들은 'heck'을 사용하죠? 다시 말하지만, 어떤 사람들은 'hella' 대신

‘hecka’. mm-hmm 

'hecka'라고 말합니다. mm-hmm

So we can say, “There's hecka food at home.” Again, it means the same thing - there's  

그래서 "집에 음식이 엄청나다"라고 말할 수 있습니다. 다시 말하지만, 같은 의미입니다.

a lot of food at home. “There's hecka food at home.” 

집에 음식이 많이 있습니다. “집에 먹을 게 너무 많아.”

But if you don't want to use  ‘hella’, you can use this one. 

하지만 'hella'를 사용하고 싶지 않다면 이것을 사용할 수 있습니다.

And in the same way you can use ‘hecka’ to  substitute ‘hella’ in the first sentence as well. 

그리고 같은 방식으로 'hecka'를 사용하여 첫 번째 문장에서 'hella'를 대체할 수도 있습니다.

“This room is hecka hot.” Right? “This room is hecka hot.” 

"이 방은 존나 더워." 오른쪽? "이 방은 존나 더워."

It's very hot in here but I  don't want to say ‘hella’. 

여기는 매우 덥지만 '안녕하세요'라고 말하고 싶지 않습니다.

But remember, again, this slang word ‘hella’ and  ‘hecka’ is actually from Northern California, 

하지만 이 속어인 'hella'와 'hecka'는 실제로 북부 캘리포니아에서 온 것이므로

so you might not hear it or people  might not understand what you mean 

듣지 못할 수도 있고 뉴욕이나 영국과 같은 다른 곳에서 이 속어를 사용하면 사람들이 당신이 의미하는 바를 이해하지 못할 수도 있다는 점을 기억하세요

if you use it in other places  such as New York or the UK.

So keep that in mind. Okay so let's look at a couple examples sentences. 

그러니 명심하십시오. 좋습니다. 몇 가지 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

“This pizza is hella good.” “This pizza is hella good.” 

“이 피자 정말 맛있어요.” “이 피자 정말 맛있어요.”

“You look hella pretty.” “You look hella pretty.”

“Your hair is hecka long.” “Your hair is hecka long.”

“There's hecka people at this concert.” “There's hecka people at this concert.” 

“이 콘서트에 사람이 정말 많네.” “이 콘서트에 사람이 정말 많네.”

Now, remember, this is the sentence where you  would use ‘hecka’ to mean ‘a lot of’, right? 

자, 기억하세요, 이것은 'hecka'를 '많은'을 의미하는 데 사용하는 문장입니다, 그렇죠?

So, again, “There's hecka people at this concert.” 

그래서 또 "이번 콘서트에 사람이 정말 많네."

“I have hella things to do.” “I have hella things to do.” 

"할 일이 너무 많아요." "할 일이 너무 많아요."

Okay, so those are the ways that we can use  ‘hella’ or ‘hecka’ in our everyday speech. 

자, 이것이 일상 대화에서 'hella' 또는 'hecka'를 사용할 수 있는 방법입니다.

But I want to remind you guys, one more time,

this slang is used mostly in Northern California. Now, for those of you who like

and enjoy hip-hop music. Some hip-hop artists from that area,

such as e-40, and the Federation,  use the slang word in their music. 

e-40 및 Federation과 같은 해당 지역의 일부 힙합 아티스트는 음악에 속어를 사용합니다.

They use ‘hella’ mostly. So next time you decide
