Active and Passive Voice in Different English Tenses with Examples | Learn English Grammar

Today, we're going to learn about active and passive voice in English with different tenses.

Now, I know many of you know how to use the active voice but switching it to the passive

voice can be somewhat confusing.

And then now, we're going to use different tenses as well.

Past tense, present tense and future tense.

Let's get to it.

So let's review changing from active voice to passive voice.

So here, “The child is opening the door.”

Quindi qui, "Il bambino sta aprendo la porta".

We learned, from before, that active voices, they follow the subject verb object pattern.

Abbiamo imparato, da prima, che le voci attive seguono lo schema soggetto verbo oggetto.

Here our subject, or the doer, is ‘the child’.

Qui il nostro soggetto, o l'agente, è "il bambino".

But what is the child doing?

Ma cosa sta facendo il bambino?

“The child is opening ...”

"Il bambino sta aprendo..."

Here we have ‘ing’ attached to our verb, ‘open’, which makes ‘opening’.

Qui abbiamo 'ing' attaccato al nostro verbo, 'open', che fa 'opening'.

This is present continuous which means that the child is opening the door right now.

Questo è presente continuo, il che significa che il bambino sta aprendo la porta in questo momento.

At this moment.

In questo momento.

And of course the receiver is ‘the door’.

E ovviamente il ricevitore è "la porta".

Now, when we're switching over to passive voice, we learned from before, that our doer

and our receiver swap places.

e chi riceve si scambiano di posto.

So like in our sentence here, our doer and receiver are now in two different spots.

So ‘the door’ is now in the beginning of the sentence.

And ‘the child’ is at the end.

‘The door’, still our receiver, is being opened.

hmm, so now our verb has changed a little bit.

Our action has changed.

So we still have ‘is’.

And we have ‘being’, so we have our “to be” verb

but we must continue our present continuous and bring down the ‘ing’.

So, “… is being…” and we have our past participle ‘opened’.

“… is being opened by the child.”

And here we have our preposition with the doer.

And sometimes the doer is left out of sentences.

And that's okay as long as we know that the door is being opened.

Now, let's practice and learn about some more tenses.

Let's practice going from active voice to passive voice using different tenses.

Let's go ahead and practice some of these tenses together starting with the present simple.

Andiamo avanti e pratichiamo insieme alcuni di questi tempi partendo dal presente semplice.

“The teacher helps the student.”

"L'insegnante aiuta lo studente."

So we know that this is an active voice.

Quindi sappiamo che questa è una voce attiva.

And now we're going to change it into passive voice.

E ora lo trasformeremo in voce passiva.

“The student is helped by the teacher.”

"Lo studente è aiutato dall'insegnante."

And ‘is’ is our “to be” verb.

E 'is' è il nostro verbo "essere".

And the past participle would be ‘helped’.

E il participio passato sarebbe "aiutato".

Let's look at present continuous.

Diamo un'occhiata al presente continuo.

“The teacher is helping the student.”

"L'insegnante sta aiutando lo studente."

Oh there's that ‘ing’ again.

Oh, c'è di nuovo quel "ing".

And we'll switch that over to, “The student is being …”

E lo cambieremo in "Lo studente sta..."

ah and there's the present continuous back with us and our “to be” verb.

ah e c'è il presente continuo di nuovo con noi e il nostro verbo "essere".

‘helped’ there is our past participle.

‘aiutato’ è il nostro participio passato.

“… by the teacher.”

"... dall'insegnante."

Present perfect.

Presente perfetto.

“The teacher has helped the student.”

"L'insegnante ha aiutato lo studente."

“The student has been helped by the teacher.”

"Lo studente è stato aiutato dall'insegnante."

Past simple.

Passato semplice.

“The teacher helped the student.”

"L'insegnante ha aiutato lo studente."

“The student was helped by the teacher.”

"Lo studente è stato aiutato dall'insegnante."

Past continuous.

Passato continuo.

“The teacher was helping the student.”

"L'insegnante stava aiutando lo studente."

“The student was being helped by the teacher.”

"Lo studente veniva aiutato dall'insegnante."

Okay, so past perfect.

Ok, quindi passato perfetto.

“The teacher had helped the student.”

"L'insegnante aveva aiutato lo studente."

“The student had been helped by the teacher.”

"Lo studente era stato aiutato dall'insegnante."

Future simple.

Futuro semplice.

“The teacher will help the student.”

"L'insegnante aiuterà lo studente."

“The student will be helped by the teacher.”

"Lo studente sarà aiutato dall'insegnante."

Future continuous.

Futuro continuo.

“The teacher will be helping the student.”

"L'insegnante aiuterà lo studente."

“The student will be being helped by the teacher.”

"Lo studente sarà aiutato dall'insegnante."

And everyone just remember that this tense is normally not used with the passive voice.

E tutti ricordano solo che questo tempo normalmente non è usato con la voce passiva.

Future perfect.

Futuro perfetto.

“The teacher will have helped the student.”

"L'insegnante avrà aiutato lo studente."

“The student will have been helped by the teacher.”

"Lo studente sarà stato aiutato dall'insegnante ."
