Today we're going to be looking at two words. 

اليوم سننظر في كلمتين.

These two words. They look the same and they almost sound the same, 

هاتين الكلمتين. يبدوان متشابهين ويبدوان متشابهين تقريبًا ،

but they're different. Keep watching to find out what the  

لكنهما مختلفان. استمر في المشاهدة لمعرفة

difference is and to help improve your English  pronunciation and English listening skills.

Let's get started. First I'll say the sentence quickly. 

هيا بنا نبدأ. أولا سأقول الجملة بسرعة.

Really listen. ‘I'm close to the door so I'll close it.’ 

استمع حقا. "أنا قريب من الباب لذا سأغلقه."

Now again, but slower. ‘I'm close to the door so I'll close it.’ 

الآن مرة أخرى ، ولكن بشكل أبطأ. "أنا قريب من الباب لذا سأغلقه."

Okay let's see the sentence. ‘I'm close to the door so I'll close it.’ 

حسنًا ، دعنا نرى الجملة. "أنا قريب من الباب لذا سأغلقه."

What words go in these two gaps? Any ideas? 

ما الكلمات التي تدخل في هاتين الفراغتين؟ أيه أفكار؟

Well the answer is - ‘I'm close to the door so I'll close it.’ 

حسنًا ، الإجابة هي - "أنا قريب من الباب لذا سأغلقه."

You can see that they look the same, but they mean different things. 

يمكنك أن ترى أنها تبدو متشابهة ، لكنها تعني أشياء مختلفة.

Now, let's have a look at our two words. 

الآن ، دعونا نلقي نظرة على كلمتين.

We have ‘close’ and ‘close’. They are spelled in the same way, 

لدينا "قريبة" و "قريبة". يتم تهجئتها بنفس الطريقة ،

but they have different meanings  and different pronunciation. 

لكن لها معاني مختلفة ونطق مختلف.

It's what we call a heteronym. Now what's a heteronym? 

هذا ما نطلق عليه اسم مغاير. الآن ما هو اسم مغاير؟

Two words. Same spelling. 

كلمتان. نفس التهجئة.

Different meaning. Different pronunciation. 

معنى مختلف. نطق مختلف.

Okay let's start with the meaning  and pronunciation of our first word - 

حسنًا ، لنبدأ بمعنى ونطق كلمتنا الأولى -

‘close’ ‘close’ is an adjective. 

"إغلاق" " قريب" هي صفة.

It means that something is near to me. I have two sentences to help show this. 

هذا يعني أن شيئًا ما قريب مني. لدي جملتان للمساعدة في إظهار هذا.

The first one, ‘You're standing too close to me.’ 

الأول ، "أنت تقف قريبًا جدًا مني."

The person is too near. They're taking up my room - my space. 

الشخص قريب جدًا. إنهم يشغلون غرفتي - مساحتي.

It's a physical distance. You're too close to me. 

إنها مسافة جسدية. أنت قريب جدا مني.

The second sentence isn't a physical distance, but an emotional one. 

الجملة الثانية ليست مسافة جسدية ، بل هي مسافة عاطفية.

‘My mother and I are very close.’ My mother isn't here right now. 

"أمي وأنا قريبان جدًا." والدتي ليست هنا الآن.

We're not physically close,  we're emotionally close. 

نحن لسنا قريبين جسديًا ، نحن قريبون عاطفيًا.

We have a very good relationship. Okay let's practice pronunciation. 

لدينا علاقة جيدة جدا. حسنًا ، دعنا نتدرب على النطق.

The word is ‘close’. Repeat after me. 

الكلمة "قريب". كرر من بعدي.

"إغلاق" "إغلاق"

Now let's look at the meaning and  pronunciation of our second word. 

الآن دعونا نلقي نظرة على معنى ونطق كلمتنا الثانية.

‘close’ 

"قريب"

‘close’ is a verb. An action word. 

"قريب" هو فعل. كلمة عمل.

It means to shut. The opposite is to open. 

يعني اغلاق. العكس هو الفتح.

I have two sentences to show you this. First one, 

لدي جملتان لأريك هذا. الأول ،

‘Please close the window. I'm cold.’ I'm asking you to shut the window. 

"من فضلك أغلق النافذة. أنا أشعر بالبرد. أطلب منك إغلاق النافذة.

Sentence number two - ‘I close my eyes before I sleep.’ 

الجملة الثانية - "أغمض عيني قبل أن أنام." "

‘I close my eyes before I sleep.’ 

أغمض عيني قبل أن أنام."

Now let's have a look at pronunciation. Repeat after me. 

الآن دعونا نلقي نظرة على النطق. كرر من بعدي.

‘close’ ‘close’ 

"إغلاق" "إغلاق"

Now let's have a look at our main sentence. ‘I'm close to the door so I'll close it.’ 

الآن دعونا نلقي نظرة على جملتنا الرئيسية. "أنا قريب من الباب لذا سأغلقه." لقد

We've looked at ‘close’ and ‘close’, but let's not forget ‘I'm’ and ‘I’ll’. 

نظرنا إلى "قريب" و "قريب" ، لكن دعونا لا ننسى "أنا" و "سأفعل".

I am close - I'm near to the door  

أنا قريب - أنا قريب من الباب

so I'll close it. I'll shut it. 

لذا سأغلقه. سأغلقه.

I will do it. Okay let's practice.

I'm gonna say it slowly to  start and then we'll speed up.

so I really want you to listen hard. okay? I'm going to say the sentence first quickly.

Are you ready? ‘We produce produce at the farm.’

Oooh, that one's tough. I know, I know. So I'm gonna say it again but slower. second time.

Now I'll show you. Here's the sentence.

‘We produce produce at the farm.’ What words go in these two gaps? any ideas?

Well, the answer is ‘We  produce produce at the farm.’ 

حسنًا ، الإجابة هي " ننتج المنتجات في المزرعة."

They look exactly the same. I know, I know. But the pronunciation here is really important. 

تبدو متشابهة تمامًا. اعلم اعلم. لكن النطق هنا مهم حقًا.

it changes the meaning and  gives you two different words. 

يغير المعنى ويمنحك كلمتين مختلفتين.

So let's find out why. Now let's have a look at our two words, 

لذلك دعونا نكتشف السبب. الآن دعونا نلقي نظرة على كلمتنا ،

We have ‘produce’ and ‘produce’. They spelled the same, 

لدينا "إنتاج" و "إنتاج". لقد تهجا نفس الشيء ،

but the meaning and the  pronunciation is different. 

لكن المعنى والنطق مختلفان.

It's a ‘heteronym’. What is a ‘heteronym’? 

إنه "اسم مغاير". ما هو "الاسم المغاير"؟

It's where the two words are spelled the same way But the meaning and the  

حيث يتم تهجئة الكلمتين بنفس الطريقة ولكن المعنى

pronunciation is different. Let's start with the meaning and  

والنطق مختلفان. لنبدأ بمعنى

pronunciation of our first word. ‘Produce’. 

ونطق كلمتنا الأولى. 'ينتج'.

‘Produce’ is a verb. it means to make something. And I have two sentences to show you. 

"إنتاج" هو فعل. يعني أن تصنع شيئًا ما. ولدي جملتين لأريك.

‘France produces a lot of wine.’ And ‘Cities produce a lot of trash.’ 

"تنتج فرنسا الكثير من النبيذ." و "تنتج المدن الكثير من القمامة".

They make a lot of rubbish. Now Let's practice pronunciation. 

إنهم يصنعون الكثير من القمامة. الآن دعونا نتدرب على النطق.

‘Produce’ ‘Produce’ 

"إنتاج" "إنتاج"

Okay, time for what number 2. ‘Produce’. 

حسنًا ، حان وقت الرقم 2. "إنتاج".

‘Produce’ is a noun. it  means fruits and vegetables. 

"إنتاج" هو اسم. تعني الفواكه والخضروات.

So you might have the produce section at a market. Again, I have two sentences to show you this. 

لذلك قد يكون لديك قسم المنتجات في السوق. مرة أخرى ، لدي جملتان لأريكم هذا. "

‘I work at the produce section in the market.’ ‘I work at the produce section in the market.’

And our second sentence,

‘They have fresh produce every day.’ ‘They have fresh produce every day.’

Ok, let's practice pronunciation. Are you ready? Repeat after me.

Let's go back to our main sentence. ‘We produce produce at the farm.’

We ‘produce’, we make we grow, ‘produce’, fresh fruits and

First, we'll go slow. ‘We produce produce at the farm.’

this one's tricky. First, I'll say the sentence quickly.

‘Let's present the present to him.’ Hmm.. 

"لنقدم له الحاضر" همممم ..

Okay, second time, but slower. Really listen. 

حسنًا ، للمرة الثانية ، لكن أبطأ. استمع حقا.

‘Let's present the present to him.’ Okay, I'll show you. 

"لنقدم له الهدية." حسنًا ، سأريك.

‘Let's present the present to him.’ What words go in these two blanks? 

"دعونا نقدم له الحاضر." ما هي الكلمات الواردة في هذين الفراغين؟

Well, the answer is ‘Let's present the present 

حسنًا ، الجواب هو "لنقدم له الحاضر"

to him.’ Oh No! They look like the same word. 

أوه لا! يبدون مثل نفس الكلمة.

Again, It's pronunciation  that's really important here. 

مرة أخرى ، النطق هو المهم حقًا هنا.

It changes the meaning. Let me explain in more detail. 

يغير المعنى. اسمحوا لي أن أشرح بمزيد من التفصيل.

Let's take a closer look at our two words. We have ‘present’ and ‘present’. 

دعنا نلقي نظرة فاحصة على كلمتنا. لدينا "الحاضر" و "الحاضر".

They're spelt the same way, but the pronunciation and  

يتم تهجئتها بنفس الطريقة ، لكن النطق

the meaning is different. It's what we call a ‘Heteronym’. 

والمعنى مختلفان. هذا ما نسميه "Heteronym".

What is a ‘Heteronym’? It's where two words are spelled the same way, 

ما هو "Heteronym"؟ حيث يتم تهجئة كلمتين بنفس الطريقة ،

but the meaning and the  pronunciation is different. 

لكن المعنى والنطق مختلفان.

Let's look at the meaning and pronunciation of our first word. 

دعونا نلقي نظرة على معنى ونطق كلمتنا الأولى.

‘present’ ‘present’ is a verb. 

"الحاضر" هو فعل.

It means to give or reward  formally or in a ceremony. 

يعني إعطاء أو مكافأة رسميًا أو في حفل.

And I have two sentences to show you. The first one, 

ولدي جملتين لأريك. الأول ،

‘I like to present awards to my students.’ I like to give my students awards. 

"أحب تقديم الجوائز لطلابي." أحب منح جوائز لطلابي.

The second sentence, ‘A celebrity will present the prizes.’ 

الجملة الثانية ، "سيقدم أحد المشاهير الجوائز".

A celebrity will give you your prize. Now repeat after me. 

سيمنحك أحد المشاهير جائزتك. كرر الآن بعدي.

‘present’ ‘present’ 

"الحاضر" "الحاضر"

Now let's have a look at our second word, ‘present’. 

الآن دعونا نلقي نظرة على كلمتنا الثانية ، "الحاضر".

‘present’ is a noun. It means a gift something that you give to 

"الحاضر" هو اسم. إنها تعني هدية تمنحها

someone. And I have two sentences to show you this. 

لشخص ما. ولدي جملتين لأريكم هذا.

‘Thank you for the wonderful present.’ Thank you for this wonderful gift that you 

"شكرا لك على الهدية الرائعة." شكرا لك على هذه الهدية الرائعة التي

have given me. Number two, 

قدمتها لي. المرتبة الثانية ،

‘I didn't get a present for my birthday.’ I didn't get a gift for my birthday. 

"لم أحصل على هدية في عيد ميلادي". لم أحصل على هدية لعيد ميلادي.

No one gave me anything. Okay, let's have a look at pronunciation, 

لم يعطني أحد أي شيء. حسنًا ، لنلقِ نظرة على طريقة النطق ،

‘present’. ‘present’. 

"الحاضر". 'حاضر'.

Okay, let's look at our main sentence one more time. 

حسنًا ، لنلق نظرة على الجملة الرئيسية مرة أخرى.

‘Let's present the present to him.’ Let's ‘present’, let's give, 

"لنقدم له الهدية." دعونا "نقدم" ، دعونا نعطي ، "

the ‘present’, the gift, to him. Okay, repeat after me.

We'll go slowly first, and  then like a native speaker.

Let me explain why the two different words. Okay, let's take a look at these two words.

‘wound’ and ‘wound’. They spell the same way, but the  

"الجرح" و "الجرح". يتهجون نفس الطريقة ، لكن

pronunciation and the meaning is different. It's a Heteronym. 

النطق والمعنى مختلفان. إنها مغايرة.

What's the Heteronym? It’s where two words are spelled the same way, 

ما هو مغاير؟ إنه المكان الذي يتم فيه تهجئة كلمتين بنفس الطريقة ،

but have a different pronunciation,  and a different meaning. 

ولكن لهما نطق مختلف ومعنى مختلف.

Let's have a look at the meaning  and pronunciation of our two words. 

دعونا نلقي نظرة على معنى ونطق كلمتين.

First, we have ‘wound’. ‘wound’ is a verb,  

أولاً ، لدينا "جرح". "الجرح" هو فعل ،

it’s past tense of the verb ‘wind’. And ‘wind’ means to turn or coil lots of times. 

هو زمن الفعل الماضي "الريح". و "الريح" تعني الدوران أو الالتفاف مرات عديدة.

I have two sentences to show you this. ‘Yesterday,’. past tense, already happened. 

لدي جملتان لأريك هذا. 'أمس،'. الماضي ، حدث بالفعل.

‘I wound my watch.’ ‘Yesterday, I wound my watch.’ 

"لقد جرحت ساعتي". " بالأمس ، جرحت ساعتي."

And sentence number two. ‘The vine wound around the pole.’ 

والجملة الثانية. "الكرمة تلتف حول العصا."

The vine, a plant, wound around the pole. Okay, pronunciation. 

الكرمة ، نبتة ، تلتف حول العمود. حسنًا ، النطق.

Repeat after me. ‘wound’ 

كرر من بعدي. "الجرح"

‘wound’ 

"الجرح"

Let’s look at the word number two. ‘wound’. 

دعونا نلقي نظرة على الكلمة الثانية. 'جرح'.

‘wound’ is a noun. It means a cut or a scrape  

"الجرح" هو اسم. يعني جرحًا أو كشطًا ينزف

something that is bleeding and it hurts. I have two sentences to show you this. 

ويؤلم. لدي جملتان لأريك هذا.

‘The wound on my knee hurts.’ ‘The cut or the scrape on my knee  

"الجرح في ركبتي يؤلمني". " الجرح أو الخدش على ركبتي ينزف.

is bleeding.’ It hurts. 

"

‘The wounds on my knee hurts.’ And sentence number two. 

"الجروح في ركبتي تؤلمني" والجملة الثانية.

‘Clean the wound before it gets infected.’ Clean the wound. clean scraped, clean the  

نظف الجرح قبل أن يصاب بالعدوى. نظف الجرح. قم بتنظيف الكشط ، قم بتنظيف

cut before it gets infected. before it gets dirty. 

الجرح قبل أن يصاب بالعدوى. قبل أن تتسخ.

Okay, let's practice pronunciation. Repeat after me. 

حسنًا ، دعنا نتدرب على النطق. كرر من بعدي.

‘wound’ ‘wound’ 

"الجرح" "الجرح"

Let's go back to the main sentence. ‘The nurse wound the bandage around the wound.’ 

دعنا نعود إلى الجملة الرئيسية. "الممرضة جرح الضمادة حول الجرح."

The Nurse wound, she wrapped or coiled, the  bandage around my wound to cut or scrape. 

الجرح الممرضة ، هي ملفوفة أو ملفوفة ، الضمادة حول جرحي لقطع أو كشط.

‘The nurse wound the bandage around the wound.’ Okay, repeat after me. 

"الممرضة جرحت الضمادة حول الجرح." حسنًا ، كرر من ورائي.

We’re gonna go slow to start  and then like a native speaker.

They look the same. And they sound the same.

First, I'm going to say the  sentence really quickly,

so I want you to listen closely. ‘I had to desert my car in the desert.’

Oh that's tough. So I'll slow it down for you.

‘I had to desert my car in the desert.’ Let's see the sentence.

‘I had to desert my car in the desert.’ What words go in these two blanks?

Can you guess? Well the answer is,

‘I had to desert my car in the desert.’

Oh no. They look like the same word.

I know. I know. But they're two different words.

And pronunciation is key here for making sure  that people can understand what you're saying.

Let me tell you more. Okay let's have a look at our two words.

We have desert and desert. They're spelled the same way, but the meaning

and the pronunciation is different. It's a heteronym.

What is a heteronym? Well it's where two words are

spelled the same way but have different  pronunciation and a different meaning.

Okay, let's look at the meaning  and pronunciation of our two words. 

حسنًا ، لنلقِ نظرة على معنى ونطق كلمتين.

First, we'll start with ‘dessert’. ‘desert’ is a verb. 

أولاً ، سنبدأ بـ "الحلوى". "الصحراء" فعل.

It means to leave or abandon. Everything goes away. 

يعني الرحيل أو التخلي. كل شيء يذهب بعيدا.

I have two sentences to show you this. First, ‘Our father deserted our family,’ 

لدي جملتان لأريك هذا. أولا ، "أبانا هجر عائلتنا ،"

Sad. It means that he abandoned  the family. He left the family. 

سعد. هذا يعني أنه تخلى عن الأسرة. ترك الأسرة.

And second, ‘Rain made everyone desert the beach.’ 

وثانياً ، "جعل المطر الجميع يهجرون الشاطئ."

The rain came. And because of the rain,

everyone left the beach. No one was on the beach.

The beach had no people. Okay. Let's look at pronunciation.

Repeat after me. ‘desert’

‘desert’ Our second word is ‘desert’. 

"صحراء" كلمتنا الثانية هي "صحراء".

‘desert’ is a noun. It means a place  

"الصحراء" اسم. إنه يعني مكانًا

that is usually very sandy. Very hot. Not a lot of water and not many plants. 

عادة ما يكون رمليًا جدًا. حار جدا. ليس هناك الكثير من الماء وليس الكثير من النباتات.

I have two sentences to show you this in use. First, ‘This desert has a lot of sand.’

This place has a lot of sand. It's a desert.

‘desert’ doesn't have water  so you will become thirsty.

Okay pronunciation time. Repeat after me.

We'll go back to our main sentence now. ‘I had to desert my car in the desert.’

I had to desert. I had to leave. I had to  abandon my car -I don't know why - in the desert.

But there are two different words, I promise. Okay, Let's have a look at our two

words a little bit closer. We have ‘dove’ and ‘dove’.

They spell the same way, but the pronunciation and the meaning is different.

It's a Heteronym. What's a Heteronym?

Well, it's where we have two  words that are spelled the same,

but have different meanings  and different pronunciations.

Let's look at the meaning and  pronunciation of our two words.

First is ‘dove’. ‘dove’ is a noun. 

الأول هو "حمامة". "حمامة" اسم.

It's a small white bird, similar to a pigeon. You might see many in the sky. 

إنه طائر أبيض صغير يشبه الحمام. قد ترى الكثير في السماء.

I have two sentences to show you this in use. ‘I saw a dove fly in the sky.’ 

لدي جملتان لأظهر لك هذا قيد الاستخدام. رأيت حمامة تطير في السماء.

I saw a dove, a small bird, fly in the sky. And sentence number two. 

رأيت حمامة ، طائرًا صغيرًا ، يطير في السماء. والجملة الثانية.

‘The poor dove flew into the window.’ 

"طارت الحمامة المسكينة إلى النافذة."

Oh dear. The small bird, white bird flew into the window.

Okay, let's practice pronunciation. Repeat after me. 

حسنًا ، دعنا نتدرب على النطق. كرر من بعدي.

‘dove’ ‘dove’ 

"حمامة"

Okay, let's look at our second word. ‘dove’ 

حسنًا ، لنلقِ نظرة على كلمتنا الثانية. "

‘dove’ is a verb. It's past tense, so already happened of ‘dive’. 

الحمامة" هو فعل. إنه زمن الماضي ، لذا حدث بالفعل "الغوص".

‘dive’ means to suddenly and  steeply go down into something. 

"الغوص" يعني النزول فجأة وبشكل حاد إلى شيء ما.

Could be the air. Sometimes, it's water.

Okay, let's have a look at  two sentences to show this.

Number one. ‘The airplane

dove to avoid hitting the other airplane.’ The airplane went down suddenly in the air

to avoid hitting another airplane. And sentence number two,

She went down into the water. Okay, let's look at pronunciation.

Now, let's look at our main sentence again. ‘The dog dove into the lake.’

Let's have a look at our two words: content and content

They're spelled the same way, but the  pronunciation, and the meaning is different.

It's a heteronym. What is a heteronym?

Well it's where you have two words  that are spelled the same way

but the pronunciations and  the meanings are different.

Let's look at our two words in more detail. Both the meaning and the pronunciation.

First is ‘content’. ‘content’ is an adjective. 

الأول هو "المحتوى". "المحتوى" صفة.

It means to be happy or satisfied with something.

I have two sentences for you. “I'm content with my peaceful life.’

I'm happy with my peaceful life. I'm satisfied.

I don't need anything else. Sentence number two.

‘She is content to stay home Friday night.’ She's okay with staying home Friday night.

She's happy with that. She doesn't need anything else.

content Let's look at word number two.

Now let's go back to our main sentence. ‘My boss was content with the content.’

We have the meanings and the pronunciations.

Word number one is ‘minute’/ˈmɪnɪt/. ‘minute’ is a time noun. 

الكلمة الأولى هي "دقيقة" / mɪnɪt /. "دقيقة" هي اسم الوقت.

It can mean 60 seconds - a literal  minute or a short amount of time. 

يمكن أن يعني 60 ثانية - دقيقة حرفية أو فترة زمنية قصيرة.

Let me show you sentence number one. ‘Class ends in a minute.’

Class ends in one minute - 60 seconds. That's all the time left.

or something in a lot of detail. So you're looking very closely at something.

First, I will say the sentence quickly. So really listen well.

Can you tell me? Well, the answer is

I know. I know. They look the same but

they're two different words. Let me tell you why.

Let's have a look at our two words in more detail. We have ‘live’ and ‘live’.

The spelling is the same but the  pronunciation and the meaning is different. 

الإملاء هو نفسه ولكن النطق والمعنى مختلفان.

It's a heteronym. What's a heteronym?

It's where you have two words … where the spelling is the same but the

meanings and the pronunciations are different. Let's have a look at the meaning and the

pronunciation of our two words. I’ll start with ‘live’.

‘live’ is an adjective. It means something that is happening right now. 

"العيش" صفة. إنه يعني شيئًا ما يحدث الآن.

You can go and see it with your own eyes. Like a broadcast or a concert. 

يمكنك الذهاب ورؤيته بأم عينيك. مثل البث أو الحفلة الموسيقية.

Here are two sentences to show you this. The first one, 

هذه جملتين لتظهر لك هذا. الأول ،

‘The live debate is happening right now.’ 

"النقاش المباشر يحدث الآن."

The live debate is happening right this second. You can go and watch it. 

النقاش الحي يحدث في هذه اللحظة. يمكنك الذهاب ومشاهدته.

And number two. ‘I like watching live streams on the internet.’ 

ورقم اثنين. "أحب مشاهدة البث المباشر على الإنترنت."

I like watching people broadcast themselves on  the internet live right now as it's happening. 

أحب مشاهدة الأشخاص وهم يبثون أنفسهم على الإنترنت مباشرة الآن كما يحدث.

Let's practice pronunciation. Repeat after me. 

دعونا نتدرب على النطق. كرر من بعدي.

‘live’ ‘live’ 

"عيش" "عيش"

Our second word is ‘live’. ‘live’ is a verb. 

كلمتنا الثانية هي "حي". "يعيش" هو فعل.

It means to make your home somewhere. And I have two sentences to show you this. 

هذا يعني أن تجعل منزلك في مكان ما. ولدي جملتين لأريكم هذا.

‘I live in America.’ It's where I live. 

"أنا أعيش في أمريكا." حيث أعيش.

The country where my home is. 

البلد الذي يوجد فيه بيتي.

And sentence number two, ‘They live across the street from me.’ 

والجملة الثانية ، "إنهم يعيشون على الجانب الآخر من الشارع."

I live here - my house. They live across the street. 

أنا أعيش هنا - منزلي. إنهم يعيشون عبر الشارع.

Their house is across the street from my house. Okay, let's practice pronunciation.

Now let's go back to our main sentence. ‘I make live videos where I live.’
