In this video, I will introduce the past simple English tense.

في هذا الفيديو سأقدم زمن الماضي البسيط في اللغة الإنجليزية.

This grammar tense can help you explain a past general state, action, or habit.

يمكن أن يساعدك هذا الزمن النحوي في شرح حالة أو فعل أو عادة عامة سابقة.

In this video, I will talk about the 'be' verb in the past simple tense.

في هذا الفيديو سأتحدث عن الفعل be في زمن الماضي البسيط.

The 'be' verb in the past simple tense can be used to describe a past general state.

يمكن استخدام الفعل "be" في زمن الماضي البسيط لوصف حالة عامة سابقة.

We use the 'be' verbs, ‘was’ and ‘were’ in this tense.

نستخدم أفعال "be" و"was" و"were" في هذا الزمن.

Take a look at the examples.

نلقي نظرة على الأمثلة.

‘I was scared.’

'كنت خائفا.'

‘James', or he 'was a teacher.’

"جيمس"، أو "كان مدرسًا".

‘She was sad.’

'كانت حزينة.'

‘My dog was hungry.’

"كان كلبي جائعا."

‘My dog’ can be ‘it’.

"كلبي" يمكن أن يكون "هو".

So for ‘I’, ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘it’, we use the past tense 'be' verb, ‘was’.

لذلك بالنسبة لـ "أنا"، "هو"، "هي"، "هو"، نستخدم الفعل الماضي "be"، "كان".

However, for ‘you’, ‘we’ and ‘they’, we use ‘were’.

‘You were a good student.’

‘Your parents, or they were at the park.’ and ‘We were at home for two hours.’

In this last sentence, you see that the duration is emphasized.

Now I will talk about regular verbs in the past simple tense.

الآن سأتحدث عن الأفعال المنتظمة في زمن الماضي البسيط.

Take a look at these examples.

ألق نظرة على هذه الأمثلة.

‘Liam played a game.’

"لقد لعب ليام لعبة."

Liam is a ‘he’,

ليام هو "هو"،

but really it doesn't matter for regular verbs in the past simple tense.

ولكن في الحقيقة لا يهم بالنسبة للأفعال المنتظمة في زمن الماضي البسيط.

Because no matter what the subject is, all we have to do is add ‘d’ or ‘ed’

لأنه بغض النظر عن الفاعل، كل ما علينا فعله هو إضافة "d" أو "ed"

to the end of the verb.

إلى نهاية الفعل.

Here the verb is ‘play’, so I added ‘-ed’.

الفعل هنا هو "play"، لذا أضفت "-ed".

‘Liam played a game.’

"لقد لعب ليام لعبة."

‘The car, or it needed gas.’

"السيارة، أو أنها تحتاج إلى البنزين."

The verb here is ‘need’.

الفعل هنا هو "الحاجة".

For the past simple tense, I added ‘-ed’.

بالنسبة للزمن الماضي البسيط أضفت "-ed".

‘We watched a movie.’

'شاهدنا فيلم.'

Again, an ‘ed’ at the of ‘watch’.

مرة أخرى، "ed" في "watch".

‘You exercised for an hour.’

"لقد تدربت لمدة ساعة."

In this case, the verb is ‘exercise’.

في هذه الحالة، الفعل هو "ممارسة".

I only need to add a ‘d’ to make it the past tense.

أنا فقط بحاجة إلى إضافة "د" لجعله في الزمن الماضي.

And finally, ‘They usually worked after school.’

وأخيرا، "كانوا عادة يعملون بعد المدرسة."

The verb is ‘work’.

الفعل هو "العمل".

And I added an ‘ed’ to make it in the past tense.

وأضفت "ed" لجعلها في زمن الماضي.

The word ‘usually’ shows that this was a habit.

وكلمة "عادة" تدل على أن هذه كانت عادة.

Remember, the past simple tense can be used to show past habits.

تذكر أنه يمكن استخدام زمن الماضي البسيط لإظهار عادات الماضي.

Now, I'll talk about irregular verbs in the past simple tense.

والآن سأتحدث عن الأفعال الشاذة في زمن الماضي البسيط.

Remember, for regular verbs, we only add ‘d’ or ‘ed’ to make a verb into the past tense.

تذكر، بالنسبة للأفعال المنتظمة، نضيف فقط "d" أو "ed" لتحويل الفعل إلى زمن الماضي.

However, for irregular verbs, we have to change the verb in a different way.

ومع ذلك، بالنسبة للأفعال الشاذة، علينا تغيير الفعل بطريقة مختلفة.

Let's take a look at some examples.

دعونا نلقي نظرة على بعض الأمثلة.

‘I ate with my friend.’

"أكلت مع صديقي."

The verb here is ‘ate’.

الفعل هنا هو "أكل".

‘ate’ is the past simple tense of ‘eat’.

"أكل" هو زمن الماضي البسيط لكلمة "أكل".

The next example says, ‘Nara wrote a story.’

يقول المثال التالي، "نارا كتبت قصة".

The verb is ‘write’.

الفعل هو "اكتب".

And because it's irregular to change it into the past tense, we change the verb to ‘wrote’.

ولأنه من غير النظامي تغييره إلى زمن الماضي، فإننا نغير الفعل إلى "كتب".

‘You often came home late.’

"لقد عدت إلى المنزل في كثير من الأحيان في وقت متأخر."

The verb here is ‘come’ and it's been changed to ‘came’.

الفعل هنا هو "جاء" وتم تحويله إلى "جاء".

You'll notice that we had the word ‘often’ to show a habit.

ستلاحظ أنه كان لدينا كلمة "في كثير من الأحيان" للإشارة إلى العادة.

‘We bought a camera.’

"لقد اشترينا كاميرا."

The verb here is ‘buy’ and it's been changed to ‘bought’ to show the past simple tense.

الفعل هنا هو "شراء" وقد تم تحويله إلى "اشترى" ليظهر زمن الماضي البسيط.

And finally, ‘My parents sent me money for a year.’

وأخيراً، "أرسل لي والداي أموالاً لمدة عام".

Here the verb ‘sent’ is the past tense of ‘send’.

هنا الفعل "أرسل" هو الفعل الماضي من "أرسل".

Here we also see ‘for a year’, this shows duration.

ونرى هنا أيضًا عبارة "لمدة عام"، وهذا يوضح المدة.

Now I will talk about the negative form for the 'be' verb in the past simple tense.

الآن سأتحدث عن صيغة النفي للفعل "be" في زمن الماضي البسيط.

Here are some examples.

وهنا بعض الأمثلة.

The first one says, ‘I was not hungry.’

يقول الأول: "لم أكن جائعاً".

For the past simple tense, the negative 'be' verb

بالنسبة لزمن الماضي البسيط، الفعل المنفي "be"

I f the subject is ‘I’, ‘he’, ‘she’ or ‘it’, we say ‘was not’.

إذا كان الفاعل هو "أنا" أو "هو" أو "هي" أو "هو"، نقول "لم يكن".

For example, ‘I was not’ or ‘she was not’ or the contraction ‘wasn't’.

على سبيل المثال، "لم أكن" أو "لم تكن" أو الانكماش "لم يكن".

‘I wasn't’.

"لم أكن".

‘She wasn't’.

"لم تكن".

So let's look again, ‘I was not hungry.’

لذلك دعونا ننظر مرة أخرى، "لم أكن جائعا".

‘She wasn't home today.’

"لم تكن في المنزل اليوم."

Now, if the subject is ‘you’, ‘we’ or ‘they’,

الآن، إذا كان الفاعل هو "أنت" أو "نحن" أو "هم"،

We say ‘were not’ or the contraction ‘weren't’.

نقول "لم تكن" أو الضم "لم يكن".

‘The children, or they were not quiet.’

And then, ‘The dog', or it was not, or 'wasn't playful.’

Now, let's talk about how to form the negative in the past simple tense for non-'be' verbs,

regular or irregular.

Here are some examples.

وهنا بعض الأمثلة.

‘I did not like him.’

What we do for non-'be' verbs is simply put ‘did not’ after the subject.

ما نفعله مع الأفعال غير "be" هو ببساطة وضع "لم" بعد الفاعل.

And you'll notice that for the verb, we don't make any changes.

وستلاحظ أنه بالنسبة للفعل، فإننا لا نقوم بإجراء أي تغييرات.

We keep the base verb.

نحتفظ بالفعل الأساسي.

‘He didn't catch the ball.’

"لم يمسك الكرة."

Again, it's ‘he did not’, but here we used a contraction,

مرة أخرى، "لم يفعل"، ولكن هنا استخدمنا الاختصار،

‘He didn't catch the ball.’

"لم يمسك الكرة".

‘They didn't dance.’

"لم يرقصوا."

Again, here's the contraction for ‘did not’.

مرة أخرى، هذا هو الانكماش لكلمة "لم".

And you'll notice that for the verb, we didn't change it at all.

وستلاحظ أنه بالنسبة للفعل، لم نغيره على الإطلاق.

Here's an irregular verb, and here's a regular verb, we keep them in the base form.

هنا فعل شاذ، وهنا فعل منتظم، نحتفظ بهما في الصيغة الأساسية.

And finally, ‘We didn't think about that.’

وأخيرا، "لم نفكر في ذلك".

Again, we simply say ‘did not’ or ‘didn't’.

مرة أخرى، نقول ببساطة "لم" أو "لم يفعل".

Now I will introduce two ways to form questions for the past simple tense.

الآن سأقدم طريقتين لتكوين الأسئلة في زمن الماضي البسيط.

Take a look at the first example.

ألق نظرة على المثال الأول.

‘He was angry.’

'كان غاضبا.'

In this first sentence, we see the 'be' verb ‘was’.

في هذه الجملة الأولى نرى الفعل "كان" "كان".

It's quite easy.

انه سهل للغاية.

All you have to do to turn this into a question is switch the order the first two words.

كل ما عليك فعله لتحويل هذا إلى سؤال هو تبديل ترتيب أول كلمتين.

‘Was he angry?’

"هل كان غاضبا؟"

You can answer by saying ‘Yes, he was.’ or ‘No, he wasn't.’

يمكنك الإجابة بقول "نعم، لقد كان كذلك". أو "لا، لم يكن كذلك".

The next sentence also has a 'be' verb.

الجملة التالية تحتوي أيضًا على فعل "be".

‘They were comfortable.’

لقد كانوا مرتاحين.

So again, switch the first two words.

لذلك مرة أخرى، قم بتبديل الكلمتين الأوليين.

‘Were they comfortable?’

"هل كانوا مرتاحين؟"

The answers can be, ‘Yes, they were.’

يمكن أن تكون الإجابات: "نعم، لقد كانوا كذلك".

or ‘No, they weren't.’

أو "لا، لم يكونوا كذلك."

However, look at the third sentence.

ومع ذلك، انظر إلى الجملة الثالثة.

‘Sam lived here.’

"عاش سام هنا."

There is no 'be' verb in this sentence.

لا يوجد فعل "be" في هذه الجملة.

Instead, we see the action verb ‘lived’.

بدلا من ذلك، نرى الفعل "عاش".

So what we do is no matter what the subject,

إذن ما نفعله هو أنه بغض النظر عن الموضوع،

we start the question with ‘did’.

فإننا نبدأ السؤال بـ "فعل".

‘Did Sam live here?’

You'll notice that the verb no longer is in the past tense.

ستلاحظ أن الفعل لم يعد في صيغة الماضي.

We use the base form of the verb.

نستخدم الصيغة الأساسية للفعل.

‘Did Sam live here?’

«هل عاش سام هنا؟»

You can say ‘Yes, he did.’

يمكنك أن تقول "نعم، لقد فعل ذلك".

or ‘No, he didn't.’

أو "لا، لم يفعل".

The last sentence is similar.

الجملة الأخيرة مماثلة.

‘They won the contest last year.’

"لقد فازوا في المسابقة العام الماضي."

The verb here is ‘won’, that's not a 'be' verb.

الفعل هنا هو "فاز"، وهذا ليس فعل "يكون".

So again, we start the question with ‘did’ .

لذا، مرة أخرى، نبدأ السؤال بـ "did".

And then the subject ‘they’, we use the base form of the verb and that's ‘win’.

ثم الفاعل "هم"، نستخدم الصيغة الأساسية للفعل وهو "الفوز".

‘Did they win the contest last year?’

"هل فازوا في المسابقة العام الماضي؟"

You can say, ‘Yes, they did.’

Now I'll introduce how to create an answer WH questions in the past simple tense.

Take a look at the board.

نلقي نظرة على المجلس.

We have some WH words here.

لدينا بعض الكلمات WH هنا.

‘What’ ‘When’

"ماذا" و"متى"

‘Where’ and ‘Why’

و"أين" و"لماذا"

You'll notice that after each WH word comes the word ‘did’.

ستلاحظ أنه بعد كل كلمة من كلمات WH تأتي كلمة "فعل".

‘What did’ ‘When did’

"ماذا فعل" "متى فعل"

‘Where did’ and ‘Why did’.

"أين فعل" و"لماذا فعل".

What comes after that the subject and then the base form of the verb.

وما يأتي بعد ذلك الفاعل ثم أصل الفعل.

So, let's take a look.

لذلك، دعونا نلقي نظرة.

‘What did you do last night?’

'ماذا فعلت الليلة الماضية؟'

‘What did you do last night?’

'ماذا فعلت الليلة الماضية؟'

I can answer by saying something like, ‘I watched a movie.’

يمكنني الإجابة بقول شيء مثل: "لقد شاهدت فيلمًا".

Or ‘I read a book.’

أو "قرأت كتابًا".

You'll notice that the answer is in the past simple tense.

‘When did you get home last night?’

"متى عدت إلى المنزل الليلة الماضية؟"

‘I got home at 10 p.m.’

"وصلت إلى المنزل في الساعة 10 مساءً"

‘Where did they eat lunch?’

"أين تناولوا الغداء؟"

‘They ate lunch at home.’

"لقد تناولوا الغداء في المنزل."

Again, ‘ate’ is the past tense of ‘eat’.

مرة أخرى، "أكل" هو الفعل الماضي من "أكل".

Answer in the past simple tense.

الإجابة في زمن الماضي البسيط.

And finally, ‘Why did the company hire him?’

وأخيراً، "لماذا قامت الشركة بتعيينه؟"

‘The company hired him because he's a hard worker.’

"لقد استأجرته الشركة لأنه عامل مجتهد."
