This grammar tense can help you explain a past general state, action, or habit.

In this video, I will talk about the 'be' verb in the past simple tense.

このビデオでは、単純過去形の「be」動詞について話します。

The 'be' verb in the past simple tense can be used to describe a past general state.

過去単純時制の「be」動詞は、過去の一般的な状態を説明するために使用できます。

We use the 'be' verbs, ‘was’ and ‘were’ in this tense.

この時制では、「be」動詞、「was」、「were」を使用します。

Take a look at the examples.

例を見てみましょう。

‘I was scared.’

'私は怖がっていた。'

‘James', or he 'was a teacher.’

「ジェームズ」、あるいは彼は「先生でした」。

‘She was sad.’

'彼女は悲しかった。'

‘My dog was hungry.’

「私の犬はお腹が空いていました。」

‘My dog’ can be ‘it’.

「私の犬」が「それ」になることもあります。

So for ‘I’, ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘it’, we use the past tense 'be' verb, ‘was’.

したがって、「私」、「彼」、「彼女」、「それ」には、過去形の「be」動詞「was」を使用します。

However, for ‘you’, ‘we’ and ‘they’, we use ‘were’.

ただし、「あなた」、「私たち」、「彼ら」には「were」を使用します。

‘You were a good student.’

「あなたは良い生徒でした。」

‘Your parents, or they were at the park.’ and ‘We were at home for two hours.’

「あなたの両親か、公園にいたのです。」そして「私たちは2時間家にいました。」

In this last sentence, you see that the duration is emphasized.

この最後の文では、継続時間が強調されていることがわかります。

Now I will talk about regular verbs in the past simple tense.

今回は単純過去形の規則動詞についてお話します。

Take a look at these examples.

これらの例を見てください。

‘Liam played a game.’

「リアムはゲームをしました。」

Liam is a ‘he’,

リアムは「彼」です

but really it doesn't matter for regular verbs in the past simple tense.

が、単純過去形の通常の動詞には実際には関係ありません。

Because no matter what the subject is, all we have to do is add ‘d’ or ‘ed’

主語が何であっても、 動詞の末尾に 「d」または「ed」を追加するだけで済むためです

to the end of the verb.

Here the verb is ‘play’, so I added ‘-ed’.

ここでは動詞が「play」なので「-ed」を追加しました。

‘Liam played a game.’

「リアムはゲームをしました。」

‘The car, or it needed gas.’

「車か、ガソリンが必要だった。」

The verb here is ‘need’.

ここでの動詞は「必要」です。

For the past simple tense, I added ‘-ed’.

過去の単純時制には「-ed」を追加しました。

‘We watched a movie.’

「私たちは映画を見ました。」

Again, an ‘ed’ at the of ‘watch’.

もう一度言いますが、「watch」の「ed」です。

‘You exercised for an hour.’

「1時間運動しましたね。」

In this case, the verb is ‘exercise’.

この場合の動詞は「運動」です。

I only need to add a ‘d’ to make it the past tense.

過去形にするには「d」を追加するだけです。

And finally, ‘They usually worked after school.’

そして最後に、「彼らは通常、放課後に働いていました。」

The verb is ‘work’.

動詞は「働く」です。

And I added an ‘ed’ to make it in the past tense.

そして、過去形にするために「ed」を追加しました。

The word ‘usually’ shows that this was a habit.

「いつも」という言葉は、それが習慣であったことを示しています。

Remember, the past simple tense can be used to show past habits.

過去の単純時制は過去の習慣を示すために使用できることを覚えておいてください。

Now, I'll talk about irregular verbs in the past simple tense.

今回は単純過去形の不規則動詞についてお話します。

Remember, for regular verbs, we only add ‘d’ or ‘ed’ to make a verb into the past tense.

通常の動詞の場合、動詞を過去形にするために「d」または「ed」を追加するだけであることを覚えておいてください。

However, for irregular verbs, we have to change the verb in a different way.

ただし、不規則動詞の場合は、動詞を別の方法で変更する必要があります。

Let's take a look at some examples.

いくつかの例を見てみましょう。

‘I ate with my friend.’

「友達と食事をしました。」

The verb here is ‘ate’.

ここでの動詞は「食べる」です。

‘ate’ is the past simple tense of ‘eat’.

「ate」は「食べる」の過去形です。

The next example says, ‘Nara wrote a story.’

次の例では、「奈良が物語を書きました」と書かれています。

The verb is ‘write’.

動詞は「書く」です。

And because it's irregular to change it into the past tense, we change the verb to ‘wrote’.

そして、過去形に変えるのは不規則なので、動詞を「書いた」に変えます。

‘You often came home late.’

「あなたはよく帰りが遅くなりましたね。」

The verb here is ‘come’ and it's been changed to ‘came’.

ここの動詞は「come」ですが、「come」に変化しています。

You'll notice that we had the word ‘often’ to show a habit.

習慣を示すために「頻繁に」という単語があることに気づくでしょう。

‘We bought a camera.’

「私たちはカメラを買いました。」

The verb here is ‘buy’ and it's been changed to ‘bought’ to show the past simple tense.

ここの動詞は「買う」ですが、単純過去形を示すために「買った」に変更されています。

And finally, ‘My parents sent me money for a year.’

そして最後に、「両親が私に1年間お金を送ってくれました。」

Here the verb ‘sent’ is the past tense of ‘send’.

ここで動詞「sent」は「send」の過去形です。

Here we also see ‘for a year’, this shows duration.

ここには「for a year」も表示されており、これは期間を示しています。

Now I will talk about the negative form for the 'be' verb in the past simple tense.

Here are some examples.

The first one says, ‘I was not hungry.’

一つ目は「お腹は空いていなかった」と言う。

For the past simple tense, the negative 'be' verb

過去の単純時制、否定の「be」動詞の場合、

I f the subject is ‘I’, ‘he’, ‘she’ or ‘it’, we say ‘was not’.

主語が「私」、「彼」、「彼女」、または「それ」の場合、「ではなかった」と言います。

For example, ‘I was not’ or ‘she was not’ or the contraction ‘wasn't’.

たとえば、「私はそうではなかった」、「彼女はそうではなかった」、または短縮形は「そうではなかった」です。

‘I wasn't’.

「そうではなかった」。

‘She wasn't’.

「彼女はそうではなかった」。

So let's look again, ‘I was not hungry.’

‘She wasn't home today.’

Now, if the subject is ‘you’, ‘we’ or ‘they’,

We say ‘were not’ or the contraction ‘weren't’.

‘The children, or they were not quiet.’

And then, ‘The dog', or it was not, or 'wasn't playful.’

Now, let's talk about how to form the negative in the past simple tense for non-'be' verbs,

Here are some examples.

‘I did not like him.’

What we do for non-'be' verbs is simply put ‘did not’ after the subject.

「be」以外の動詞に対して行うことは、単純に主語の後に「did not」を置くことです。

And you'll notice that for the verb, we don't make any changes.

動詞については何も変更していないことがわかります。

We keep the base verb.

基本動詞はそのままにします。

‘He didn't catch the ball.’

「彼はボールをキャッチしませんでした。」

Again, it's ‘he did not’, but here we used a contraction,

繰り返しますが、「彼はボールをキャッチしませんでした」ですが、ここでは

‘He didn't catch the ball.’

‘They didn't dance.’

Again, here's the contraction for ‘did not’.

And you'll notice that for the verb, we didn't change it at all.

Here's an irregular verb, and here's a regular verb, we keep them in the base form.

And finally, ‘We didn't think about that.’

Again, we simply say ‘did not’ or ‘didn't’.

Now I will introduce two ways to form questions for the past simple tense.

Take a look at the first example.

‘He was angry.’

'彼は怒った。'

In this first sentence, we see the 'be' verb ‘was’.

この最初の文には、「be」動詞「was」が表示されます。

It's quite easy.

とても簡単です。

All you have to do to turn this into a question is switch the order the first two words.

これを質問に変えるために必要なのは、最初の 2 つの単語の順序を入れ替えることだけです。

‘Was he angry?’

「彼は怒っていましたか？」

You can answer by saying ‘Yes, he was.’ or ‘No, he wasn't.’

The next sentence also has a 'be' verb.

次の文にもbe動詞があります。

‘They were comfortable.’

「快適でした。」

So again, switch the first two words.

‘Were they comfortable?’

The answers can be, ‘Yes, they were.’

答えは「はい、そうでした」と言えるでしょう。

or ‘No, they weren't.’

However, look at the third sentence.

‘Sam lived here.’

「サムはここに住んでいました。」

There is no 'be' verb in this sentence.

この文には「be」動詞がありません。

Instead, we see the action verb ‘lived’.

代わりに、動作動詞「lived」が表示されます。

So what we do is no matter what the subject,

we start the question with ‘did’.

‘Did Sam live here?’

You'll notice that the verb no longer is in the past tense.

We use the base form of the verb.

‘Did Sam live here?’

「サムはここに住んでいたのですか？」

You can say ‘Yes, he did.’

「はい、彼はそうしました」と言うことができます。

or ‘No, he didn't.’

または「いいえ、彼はしませんでした。」

The last sentence is similar.

最後の文も同様です。

‘They won the contest last year.’

「彼らは昨年コンテストで優勝しました。」

The verb here is ‘won’, that's not a 'be' verb.

ここでの動詞は「won」であり、「be」動詞ではありません。

So again, we start the question with ‘did’ .

したがって、もう一度質問を 'did' で始めます。

And then the subject ‘they’, we use the base form of the verb and that's ‘win’.

そして主語の「彼ら」は動詞の原形を使い、それが「勝つ」です。

‘Did they win the contest last year?’

You can say, ‘Yes, they did.’

Now I'll introduce how to create an answer WH questions in the past simple tense.

Take a look at the board.

We have some WH words here.

‘What’ ‘When’

「何を」「いつ

‘Where’ and ‘Why’

」「どこで」「なぜ」

You'll notice that after each WH word comes the word ‘did’.

各 WH の単語の後に「did」という単語が来ることに気づくでしょう。

‘What did’ ‘When did’

「何をしたのか」「いつやったのか」

‘Where did’ and ‘Why did’.

「どこでやったのか」「なぜやったのか」。

What comes after that the subject and then the base form of the verb.

その次に来るのは主語、そして動詞の原形です。

So, let's take a look.

‘What did you do last night?’

'昨夜あなたは何をしたか？'

‘What did you do last night?’

'昨夜あなたは何をしたか？'

I can answer by saying something like, ‘I watched a movie.’

「映画を見ました」などと言って答えることができます。

Or ‘I read a book.’

または、「本を読みました。」

You'll notice that the answer is in the past simple tense.

答えが単純過去形であることがわかります。

‘When did you get home last night?’

「昨日の夜何時に家に帰りましたか？」

‘I got home at 10 p.m.’

「私は午後10時に家に帰りました」

‘Where did they eat lunch?’

「昼食はどこで食べましたか？」

‘They ate lunch at home.’

「彼らは家で昼食を食べました。」

Again, ‘ate’ is the past tense of ‘eat’.

繰り返しますが、「ate」は「eat」の過去形です。

Answer in the past simple tense.

単純過去形で答えてください。

And finally, ‘Why did the company hire him?’

そして最後に、「なぜ会社は彼を雇ったのか？」

‘The company hired him because he's a hard worker.’

「彼は勤勉なので、会社は彼を雇った。」
