Today is Day 23 and we're studying phrasal verbs with “sleep”.

As the mother of a baby, I can say I love and treasure sleep

So I had to include phrasal verbs with sleep.

If you sleep in, that means you wake up late.

You don’t set an alarm, you get to sleep longer.

I’m going to sleep in on Saturday. It’s going to be so great!

Sleep away: we use this to mean to waste time sleeping.

SLEEP AWAY. Так мы говорим о прозябании во сне.

You can’t just sleep the morning away.

— Нельзя так вот SLEEP AWAY целое утро.

Or, don’t just sleep the whole day away.

Или: — Давай не SLEEP весь день AWAY.

Or, I’m going to sleep the whole day away. I’m so tired.

Или же: — Я собираюсь SLEEP целый день AWAY. Так устала.

We use the term to sleep something off to sleep while drugs or alcohol have the chance to leave your system

He showed up drunk so I told him to go home and sleep it off.

To sleep on means to wait to make a decision until the next day.

Have you ever woken up and felt like you knew the answer to something?

I have to decide what college to go to.

I’m going to sleep on it and make a final decision tomorrow.

To sleep over means to spend the night at someone else’s house.

SLEEP OVER — провести ночь в чужом доме.

Mom, can Jane sleep over?

— Мам, а можно Джейн SLEEP OVER?

If you sleep through something, that means it didn’t wake you up.

Если вы SLEEP THROUGH что-нибудь, значит оно вас не разбудило.

I slept right through the New Year’s Eve fireworks.

— Я SLEPT без памяти THROUGH весь новогодний салют.

To sleep around means to have sex with lots of different people.

SLEEP AROUND — заниматься любовью со многими партнёрами.

For some reason, it’s okay for men to sleep around but not women.

— Почему-то мужчинам SLEEP AROUND можно, а женщинам ˜– нет.

Sleep with and sleep together can also mean to have sex.

SLEEP WITH — SLEEP TOGETHER — тоже говорят о сексе.

Do you think Kim and her assistant are sleeping together?

— Думаешь Ким и её помощник SLEEPING TOGETHER?

Or I didn’t sleep with thim.

Или: — Я не SLEEP WITH ним.

But it can also just mean to share a bed, nothing sexual.

В одной кровати можно спать и без секса.

There aren’t enough beds in the vacation house, so the two youngest kids have to sleep together.

— На даче не хватает кроватей, поэтому детям приходится SLEEP TOGETHER.

And sleep with is the same way.

Точно также и SLEEP WITH.

It doesn’t have to be sexual. She still sleeps with a teddy bear.

Никакого секса: — Она всё ещё SLEEP WITH медвежонком.

Sleep begins with the SL consonant cluster.

Глагол SLEEP начинается со звука [sl].

Teeth are together for the S, then the tongue tip goes to the roof of the mouth. Lll--

Sllllleep.

Sleep.

Then the tongue tip comes back down

and the front of the tongue arches towards the roof of the mouth for the EE vowel.

And finally, the P.

И наконец [p].

The lips come together and gently part. Sleep-- p- p- sleep.
